PLANO ISD STUDENTS BROUGHT HOME PLENTY OF ACCOLADES AT THE REGIONAL ELEMENTARY SCIENCE FAIR HELD LAST MONTH AT GARLAND ISD'S CURTIS CULWELL CENTER, COMPETING AGAINST STUDENTS FROM NEIGHBORING NORTH TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICTS PLANO ISD PROJECTS EARNED 34 OUT OF THE 77 AWARDS PRESENTED, REFLECTING THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OF OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.
AS THE NAMES ARE DISPLAYED ON OUR SCREENS, PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE AWARDS INCLUDE ONE GRAND PRIZE WINNER FROM FIRST THROUGH THIRD GRADE, 13 FIRST PLACE FINISHERS, 9 SECOND PLACE FINISHERS, 4 THIRD PLACE FINISHERS, AND SEVERAL SEVEN HONORABLE MENTIONS. WINNERS WERE AWARDED BY GRADE LEVEL STUDENTS PREVIOUSLY QUALIFIED FOR THE REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR BY WINNING THEIR CAMPUS LEVEL FAIR.
SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS WERE ALSO ABLE TO PARTICIPATE, AS OTHER PARTNERING DISTRICTS INCLUDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THAT ARE KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SIXTH GRADE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THESE YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS ON THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE.

EACH YEAR, DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE SUBMIT ARTWORK CREATED BY PRE-K THROUGH 12TH GRADE STUDENTS THAT BASICALLY ARE FROM EVERY PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE. THIS IS CALLED THE YAM SPRING EXHIBITION.
IT IS HELD AT THE BULLOCK STATE HISTORY MUSEUM IN AUSTIN, TEXAS, DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH, WHICH WE KNOW AS YOUTH ART MONTH. WELL, WHAT'S GREAT HERE IS AS OUR DISTRICT, WE'RE ALLOWED TO CHOOSE EIGHT WORKS TO REPRESENT, WHICH IS HARD ENOUGH IN ITSELF. OUT OF ALL THE ART CLASSES, WE HAVE TO CHOOSE EIGHT TO SUBMIT TO THIS PROGRAM.
HOWEVER, CAN YOU IMAGINE EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT PUTTING IN EIGHT ARTWORKS, EVERY PRIVATE INSTITUTION PUTTING IN EIGHT ARTWORKS, AND THEN HAVING TO WHITTLE IT DOWN TO WHAT MAKES IT TO STATE? PLANO ISD IS FORTUNATE THAT WE HAVE NOT ONE, BUT TWO ARTWORKS GOING TO THE STATE EXHIBITION THIS YEAR IN AUSTIN.
THAT'S APPLAUSE. [APPLAUSE] AND SO RIGHT NOW, THE WORKS ARE ACTUALLY ALREADY DOWN THERE. I WAS IN CHICAGO SPEAKING WITH A PERSON WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF YOUTH ART MONTH, AND THEY HAD SET THEM UP LAST WEEK, AND WE'LL BE GOING DOWN THERE TO VISIT THEM SOON.
BUT LET'S GO AHEAD AND MEET OUR ARTISTS. WHEN I READ YOUR NAME, IF YOU CAN WALK TO THIS LITTLE BLACK LINE AREA UP IN THE FRONT AND RECEIVE YOUR CERTIFICATE. IT LOOKS LIKE NANCY HUMPHREY, OUR VICE PRESIDENT, IS GOING TO BE HANDING OUT CERTIFICATES.

AND I WAS BLOWN AWAY BECAUSE I HONESTLY THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A DIGITAL RENDERING AS WELL.

AND THOSE TWO THINGS CRISSCROSS EACH OTHER CONSTANTLY BECAUSE OF WHAT WE MAKE IT HAS USE AND ACTUALLY IS, YOU KNOW, SO MANY PROGRAMS THAT WILL GET INVOLVED WITH THAT. SO WE TRY TO TEAM UP WITH THEM WHEN WE CAN.
AND BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE, WHICH IS ALWAYS NICE, RIGHT? EACH YEAR, THE FIRST LADY OF TEXAS, MRS. CECILIA ABBOTT, SELECTS A GROUP OF ARTWORKS FROM THE YOUTH ART MONTH SPRING EXHIBITION TO BE SHOWCASED IN THE GOVERNOR'S BUSINESS OFFICE FOR ONE FULL YEAR.
NOW WE WILL FIND OUT THIS YEAR AT THE RECEPTION ON THE 29TH, BUT ABSOLUTELY COULD BE MAYOR.

THEY SCORE MORE THAN 200 POINTS HIGHER ON SAT THAN THEIR PEERS.
AND IF YOU WANT A SPECIFIC DATA POINT, TEXAS SAT SCORES AVERAGE 964.
NATIONAL SAT AVERAGE IS 1029, AND THE TMEA ALL-STATER AVERAGE IS 1290.
SO BEING IN OUR PROGRAMS ACROSS FINE ARTS, SPECIFICALLY IN MUSIC FOR THESE ALL STATERS NOT ONLY MEANS THAT YOU'RE PASSING YOUR CLASSES, BUT YOU'RE DOING SO AT AN EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH LEVEL.

AND SO WE'VE ADDED THOSE ACROSS THE DISTRICT SO THAT STUDENTS ARE CLOSE TO HOME AS AS POSSIBLE.
BUT OUR TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED IN PRE-K RIGHT NOW IS 1,347.
AND I DO WANT TO POINT OUT, I LOOKED AT MY SLIDE DECK FROM LAST YEAR ALMOST ON THE SAME DATE, AND WE HAVE A LITTLE OVER 100 MORE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN PRE-K THAN WE DID LAST YEAR.
AND I THINK THAT SPEAKS A LOT TO THE EFFORTS FROM DR.
GOBER'S TEAM AND REALLY RECRUITING STUDENTS AND COMMUNICATING WELL ABOUT OUR ENROLLMENT AND OUR PROGRAMS, BUT ALSO SPEAKS TO THOSE ON CAMPUSES WHO ARE DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB WITH IMPLEMENTATION OF PROGRAMS AND HELPING FAMILIES FEEL CONNECTED TO OUR SCHOOLS.
OUR TOTAL NUMBER OF EB STUDENTS IN PRE-K, WE HAVE A LITTLE OVER A THOUSAND THAT ARE EB'S THAT PERCENTAGE IS SO HIGH BECAUSE IT'S ONE OF THE QUALIFIERS FOR PRE-K. AND OF THAT THOUSAND EBS, ABOUT HALF OF THEM ARE IN OUR DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM.
TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS ON FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH IS 745.
SO AGAIN A HIGH PERCENTAGE BUT THAT'S BECAUSE THAT'S ONE OF THE QUALIFIERS AS WELL.

THESE STUDENTS ARE MOSTLY THREE YEAR OLDS, BUT SOMETIMES THEY'RE FOUR YEAR OLDS AS WELL.
IF A STUDENT, FOR EXAMPLE, AT THREE YEARS OLD QUALIFIES FOR SERVICES THEY CAN START THE DAY THAT THEY TURN THREE YEARS OLD OR THE NEXT DAY. SO IT'S REALLY OUR TEAM DOES A GREAT JOB OF IDENTIFYING STUDENTS AND REALLY HELPING MAKE SURE WE HAVE EARLY INTERVENTION IN PLACE.
BUT IF THERE ARE FOUR YEAR OLDS AND MAYBE JUST NEED SPEECH THERAPY THEY DON'T QUALIFY FOR ANY OTHER SERVICES OR THEY DON'T QUALIFY IN ANY OTHER WAY. THEY MAY JUST COME TO OUR SCHOOL OR DISTRICT FOR THOSE SPEECH SERVICES.

SO THAT REALLY SPEAKS TO THE SKILLS THAT THEY'RE LEARNING DURING THEIR PRE-K EXPERIENCE WITH US.
THOSE ARE OBSERVATIONAL. AND SO AGAIN, WHERE YOU MIGHT SEE A LITTLE BIT OF A DECLINE THAT COULD EITHER BE BECAUSE OF THAT CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT OR THAT COULD BE AT BEGINNING OF YEAR, I HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO OBSERVE YOU QUITE AS MUCH AS I HAD BY MIDDLE OF YEAR.

AND SHE STARTED TRYING OUT SEVERAL OF THOSE WORDS, LIKE SOMEBODY KEPT SAYING, OKAY, OKAY, OKAY. AND SO SHE PICKED UP THIS WORD, OKAY, YOU KNOW, IN A THIRD LANGUAGE.

SO IS THIS REALLY WHERE WE'RE FOCUSING ON THOSE PRE-K CLASSROOMS AS LONG AS THERE'S ROOM? AS LONG AS THERE'S ROOM AND THERE HAVE TO BE SOME REQUIREMENTS MET.
SO IDEALLY THEY'RE NEAR KINDERGARTEN JUST SO THAT THEY'RE NOT RIGHT NEXT TO FIFTH GRADERS, RIGHT? BUT THEY HAVE THEIR OWN, YOU MENTIONED LIKE A KITCHEN, THEY ALWAYS HAVE THEIR OWN SET OF BIG CENTERS IN THE CLASSROOM.
IT IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE CLI CHECKLIST. AND SO IT DOESN'T NEED THE SHARED SPACE WITH KINDERGARTEN, EVEN THOUGH IDEALLY ON AN ELEMENTARY CAMPUS, IT'S NEAR THERE.
IN TERMS OF THE SCHOOL DAY, THEY AREN'T HOWEVER.

THEY ACTUALLY GO AFTER THE REST OF THE STUDENTS LEAVE THE CAFETERIA.
WE'RE TEACHING KIDS HOW TO DO SCHOOL. WE'RE TEACHING KIDS HOW TO OPEN THEIR OWN MILK.
IT'S VERY DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE THAT IT'S NOT AT THE SAME TIME.
THERE IS PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE PRE-K GUIDELINES.
SO ALL STUDENTS GET THAT. BUT IS IT ALWAYS IN A PE CLASSROOM? NOT NECESSARILY. THAT DEPENDS ON OUR CAMPUSES DO THE VERY BEST THEY CAN TO FIT AN ADDITIONAL AMP TIME IN THE SCHEDULE. 78 INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS. WE ALSO RECOGNIZED GRADE LEVEL TEAMS WHO COLLECTIVELY THEIR ENTIRE TEAM SCORED IN THE TOP 10% NATIONALLY ON THEIR SCHOOL CONDITIONAL GROWTH PERCENTILE, WHICH IN OTHER WORDS, MEANS THOSE STUDENTS OUTSCORED 90% OF THEIR PEERS ACROSS THE NATION IN THAT SAME GRADE LEVEL. AND SO CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE FIVE SCHOOLS CARLISLE ELEMENTARY, HUFFMAN ELEMENTARY, MITCHELL ELEMENTARY, SCHELL ELEMENTARY, AND HENDRICK MIDDLE. THEY WERE VERY EXCITED TO SEE THEIR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS SHOWING GREAT GROWTH ACROSS THE ENTIRE CAMPUS.
FOR TEAMS WHO SCORED ABOVE THE 60TH PERCENTILE, WHICH IS ACHIEVING MORE THAN, ON AVERAGE A YEAR'S WORTH OF GROWTH, AND I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE THE 126 IS A MISTAKE.
THERE REALLY WERE 126 TEAMS FOR BOTH MATH AND READING, BUT THEY WEREN'T NECESSARILY THE SAME ONES.
BUT I DID COUNT THEM TWICE SINCE IT WAS THE SAME NUMBER.
AND THEN THE TEAMS THAT WERE ABOVE THE 80TH PERCENTILE, WE HAD 53 IN MATH AND 39 IN READING.

I MEAN, I LOVE THAT TOO, BUT THIS IS SO AWESOME BECAUSE I THINK IN THIS CASE, THE KIDS REALLY SEE DIRECTLY HOW THEIR WORK IS WHAT DRIVES THIS AND THEIR TEACHERS TO SUCCEED AND THEIR TEACHERS TO BE RECOGNIZED. BUT WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY BEYOND THAT AND HOW AWESOME A JOB THE TEACHERS ARE, I THINK WE SAW FROM OUR RECOGNITION TODAY THAT AS A TEAM, THE PLANO ISD TEAM, THAT WE ALSO SHOULD BE THANKFUL TO ALL THE ASSISTANTS AND PARAS THAT HELP OUR SPECIAL ED FOLKS WHO HAVE TO WORK EXTRA HARD FOR THAT, AS WELL AS OUR OUR TEACHERS IN FINE ARTS AND IN ATHLETICS AND WHO, ARE PROVIDING ENRICHMENT FOR OUR KIDS.
SO BEYOND JUST OUR CORE TEACHING THE WHOLE TEAM.
AND THEN WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, YOU KNOW, OUR BUS DRIVERS WHO GET THE KIDS THERE ON TIME AND SAFE AND OUR CAFETERIA STAFF WHO FEEDS THEM SO THAT THEY'RE READY TO LEARN. AND OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND ESPECIALLY OUR PRINCIPALS WHO I KNOW ON A DAILY BASIS, WORK VERY, VERY HARD. AND IT'S A VERY TOUGH THING.
SO AS MUCH AS I LOVE OUR TEACHERS AND HOW WONDERFUL THIS IS, IT'S A, I THINK, A TEAM EFFORT.
ONE LAST NOTE THAT THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION IS ABSOLUTELY A PART OF THAT TEAM.
AND JUST THANK YOU TO THE EDUCATION FOUNDATION FOR NOT ONLY COORDINATING WITH THOSE PARTNERS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, PART OF THE PIE PROGRAM, BUT, YOU KNOW, COORDINATING THE SEND OFF IN THE MORNING, SIMILARLY TO GRANTS TO EDUCATORS BECAUSE I THINK THAT THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO GET EVERYBODY STARTED.

SEVERAL OF THESE POLICIES ARE INDICATED ON THE TRUSTEE LIST HAVE BEEN FURTHER REVISED BY OUR POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE BOARD, WHICH IS MYSELF, TARRAH AND MICHAEL. AND SO YOU KNOW, HAVING A STANDING POLICY SUBCOMMITTEE IS REALLY ALLOWING THE BOARD TO THIS IS OUR THIRD YEAR, THIRD YEAR IT'S REALLY ALLOWING THE BOARD TO DIG INTO POLICY IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE, YOU KNOW, ADOPTING POLICIES THAT MAKE SENSE FOR THE DISTRICT AND THEN CUSTOMIZING POLICIES WHERE THEY, WHERE THEY MAKE SENSE FOR THE DISTRICT. AND SO JUST AGAIN THERE ARE SEVERAL NOTATIONS ON YOUR ACTION LIST WHERE THE COMMITTEE HAS GONE THROUGH AND MADE SUBSEQUENT REVISIONS FROM THE POLICY UPDATE.
AND THIS IS PROBABLY EITHER THIS OR AUDIT HAS TO BE THE BUSIEST COMMITTEE.
