CONGRATULATIONS TO SHEPHERD ELEMENTARY FOR BAGGING THE TOP SPOT IN THE HEB PLASTIC BAG RECYCLING CHALLENGE ON EARTH DAY, MONDAY, APRIL 22ND.

SHEPHERD STUDENTS RECYCLED OVER 68,000 BAGS, OUTPERFORMING THE MORE THAN 675 SCHOOLS WHO PARTICIPATED ALL ACROSS TEXAS.

WAY TO REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE SHEPHERD.

I THINK WE SHOULD GIVE THEM APPLAUSE.

ALL RIGHT. FOR THE SIXTH TIME.

UP THERE IN PROGRAM HISTORY, THE SIXTH TIME PLANO WEST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCHOOL JAZZ BAND HAS BEEN SELECTED AS A TOP 15 FINALIST FOR THE 29TH ANNUAL ESSENTIALLY ELLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND COMPETITION AND FESTIVAL, TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY. OVER THE THREE DAY FESTIVAL, THE STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS, JAM SESSIONS, REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ALONGSIDE 14 OTHER TALENTED JAZZ BANDS FROM ACROSS THE NATIONS.

HOSA IS A GLOBAL, STUDENT LED ORGANIZATION RECOGNIZED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, AND SEVERAL FEDERAL AND STATE AGENCIES WHOSE MISSION IS TO EMPOWER HOSA FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO BECOME LEADERS IN THE GLOBAL HEALTH COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION, COLLABORATION, AND EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

FROM THESE RESPONSES THIS YEAR WE HAD SEVEN FRONT RUNNERS FOR THE INNOVATIONS IN STEM TEACHING AWARD, AND WE VISITED THOSE SEVEN CLASSROOMS IN APRIL.

[APPLAUSE] SO ASHLEY IS A THIRD GENERATION EDUCATOR WITH 18 YEARS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE, WITH 17 OF THOSE YEARS BEING IN PLANO ISD.

LEARNING MATH HAS ALWAYS BEEN FUN FOR HER, BUT WATCHING HER STUDENTS SOAR IS MAGICAL, AND THAT WAS VERY APPARENT IN HER CLASSROOM.

ASHLEY BELIEVES THAT GETTING STUDENTS TO STAND UP, PARTNER UP, AND COLLABORATE ABOUT MATH IS LIFE CHANGING.

THE IDEA OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT BEGAN WHEN SHE GREW UP WATCHING HER MOM CONDUCT ENGAGEMENT IN HER ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM.

ASHLEY HAS WATCHED STUDENTS WHO HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD MATH DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION FOR MATH AND FOR EACH OTHER.

WATCHING HER INTERACT WITH MATH IN A VARIETY OF WAYS INSPIRES HER TO STAY IN THE PROFESSION AND CONTINUE TO BUILD HER LIFE AROUND WHAT REALLY MATTERS, MAKING A DIFFERENCE EACH AND EVERY DAY IN THE CLASSROOM.

AS AN EXCITED, HARDWORKING, ENERGETIC MATH TEACHER.

AND SHE WOULD NOT TRADE THIS JOURNEY FOR ANYTHING IN THE WORLD.

ACCORDING TO HER PRINCIPAL, KRISTEN KINNARD, ASHLEY IS AN EXCEPTIONAL MATH EDUCATOR WITH A HUGE HEART FOR STUDENTS.

SHE IS HIGHLY COMMITTED TO BOTH A COGNITIVE AND EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT OF HER STUDENTS, AND SHE CONSTANTLY SEEKS NEW METHODS AND INNOVATION ON WAYS TO ENGAGE HER STUDENTS. THROUGH THE LOVE AND SUPPORT PROVIDED BY ASHLEY, HER STUDENTS BEGIN TO SEE THE FULL POTENTIAL AND UNDERSTAND THAT HER HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE ENDLESS.

AS A CONTINUOUS LEARNER, ASHLEY IS CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR FRESH WAYS TO IMPACT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS, ULTIMATELY CONTRIBUTING TO STUDENT LEARNING THROUGHOUT HER COMMUNITY.

[APPLAUSE] DON IS A 1988 PLANO EAST GRADUATE AND HAS TAUGHT SCIENCE IN PLANO FOR TEN YEARS.

MR. WALKER'S STUDENT SAID MR. WALKER IS ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS I'VE HAD IN MY 12 YEARS OF SCHOOLING.

AS SOMEONE WHO HAS STRUGGLED WITH TEACHERS IN THE PAST, I'M GRATEFUL TO BE HIS STUDENT.

MR. WALKER IS ATTENTIVE TO HIS STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM AND ALWAYS MAKES HIS LESSONS EASY TO UNDERSTAND, EVEN IF IT'S A DIFFICULT SUBJECT AND DON'T MAKE US FEEL BAD FOR ASKING FOR HELP, ANOTHER STUDENT STATED I TRULY FEEL LIKE I HAVE LEARNED AND RETAINED MORE INFORMATION FROM MR. WALKER'S EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE CLASS THAN ANY OF MY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE CLASSES.

I FULLY BELIEVE BECAUSE OF MR. WALKER AND HIS COMMITMENT TO CREATING A COMFORTABLE AND ENGAGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT HAS SHOWN SO CLEARLY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS.

ACCORDING TO PRINCIPAL DAVID JONES, DON WALKER IS THE SPIRIT OF OUR CAMPUS AND HAS A PASSION FOR STEM PATHWAYS.

HE IS CARING AND COMPASSIONATE, ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT HIS CONTENT, AND FOSTERS EXCITEMENT ABOUT SCIENCE TO HIS STUDENTS.

HE BUILDS EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIPS WITH HIS STUDENTS AND COLLABORATES WITH HIS PEERS.

MR. WATSON PROVIDES A POSITIVE AND SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT SINGLE HANDEDLY MOTIVATES STUDENTS TO ATTEND OR BE SUCCESSFUL AT PLANO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

HE HAS CONSTANTLY GROWN OUR AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM EACH YEAR, AND WE APPRECIATE HIS DEDICATION TO PROVIDING A SOLID EDUCATION AND OFTEN A CAREER PATH FOR SO MANY WILDCATS. I THINK THERE WAS LOTS OF GO WILDCATS IN THERE FOR MR. BANNER, BUT I TOOK SOME OUT.

I CAN ALSO SAY AS CTE DIRECTOR AND SERVING ROB, WHEN I SAY HE HAS A FAN CLUB, HE HAS SOME VOLUNTEERS THAT COME INTO HIS CLASS EVERY SINGLE DAY.

THEY'RE UNPAID, THEY DON'T MISS A DAY, BUT THEY'RE THERE TO SUPPORT THE TEACHERS AND ALSO THE STUDENTS AT PLANO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

AND THAT'S JUST BECAUSE OF HOW GREAT OUR TEACHERS ARE.

I LOVED HEARING A COMFORTABLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND MEETING KIDS WHERE THEY ARE TEACHING KIDS.

IF YOU JUST HAPPEN TO TEACH MATH THE BEST SUBJECT EVER, [CHEERING] OR YOU HAPPEN TO TEACH, THANK YOU FOR THAT.

ESPECIALLY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

IF YOU HAPPEN TO TEACH SCIENCE OR YOU HAPPEN TO TEACH AUTO TECH, THAT JUST THAT'S JUST THE VENUE FOR WHICH YOU'RE ABLE TO CONNECT AND DO GREAT THINGS FOR KIDS.

AND SO WE'RE GRATEFUL.

I'M TERRIBLE AT SPELLING AND SO I HAVE NOT GREAT MEMORIES OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

AND THEN I GET TO CARPENTER, AND I HAD MISS WOMACK FOR SCIENCE IN SIXTH GRADE, AND NATALIE IS NODDING.

AND SO YOU MUST HAVE BEEN IN MY CLASS.

NATALIE WILSON WAS MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATE.

AND SO I HAD MISS WOMACK FOR SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE, AND IT WAS LIKE A WHOLE NEW WORLD FOR SCHOOL FOR ME.

RIGHT? I WENT FROM BEING THE STUDENT THAT WAS CONSTANTLY JUST DOWN ON MYSELF BECAUSE I CANNOT SPELL.

I THINK SPELL CHECK WAS INVENTED AT SOME POINT IN THE 90S, AND SO THAT HELPED ALSO.

BUT I CANNOT OVERSTATE THE IMPACT THAT SHE HAD ON ME AND MY DEVELOPMENT AS A STUDENT.

RIGHT. AND SO I WENT FROM JUST HAVING EXCELLENT SCIENCE TEACHER AFTER SCIENCE TEACHER, AFTER SCIENCE TEACHER FROM CARPENTER, STARTING WITH MISS WOMACK AT CLARK, I HAD MISS SILVA AT PLANO EAST.

I HAD COACH FRAZIER FOR A.P.

BIO, AND IT JUST ALL OF THOSE TEACHERS MADE SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE.

AND THERE ARE LESSONS THAT I LEARNED AND THINGS THAT I TOOK FROM ALL OF MY SCIENCE TEACHERS HERE IN PLANO ISD INTO COLLEGE, INTO GRAD SCHOOL, INTO MY CAREER AS A SCIENTIST.

AND SO A LOT OF YOU RIGHT NOW, YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOUR STUDENTS ARE HEADED IN THE FUTURE.

BUT I SINCERELY HOPE THAT YOUR STUDENTS WILL COME BACK, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE WHEN YOU'VE BEEN TEACHING A WHILE AND TELL YOU THAT YOU WERE THERE, MISS WOMACK.

WHEREAS AS PART OF THE DISTRICT'S LONG RANGE FACILITY PLANNING, THE DISTRICT MAY HAVE SURPLUS REAL PROPERTY.

BUT THE NUMBER ONE CONCERN OUTSIDE OF IS IT GOING TO BE MY SCHOOL THAT I HAVE HEARD FROM MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY IN THIS PROCESS IS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ANY SURPLUS PROPERTY? AND, YOU KNOW, AND USUALLY CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY PLEASE DON'T LEAVE AN OLD BUILDING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD.

A LOT OF WHAT YOU'RE SEEING HERE IS A DIRECT RESPONSE OF COMMUNITY FEEDBACK, AND WE APPRECIATE THAT FEEDBACK AND ARE RESPONDING TO THAT FEEDBACK.

AND I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S BEEN MOST IMPRESSIVE IS THAT THE PERIOD OF TIME THAT PLANO WAS GROWING 1100 PLUS STUDENTS A YEAR, THAT GROWTH HAPPENED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR CITY.

SO AS THE SCHOOLS WERE DEVELOPED, SO WERE THE NEIGHBORHOODS.

AND THEY THAT'S WHY YOU SEE SO MANY ADJACENT PARKS NEXT TO OUR SCHOOLS.

AND SO I THINK IT'S ONLY FITTING THAT AS WE HAVE WE ARE GROWN OUT AS FAR AS ALMOST ALL OF OUR LAND AND SPACE IN OUR CITY.

AND WE'RE THINKING ABOUT WHAT THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR COMMUNITY LOOKS LIKE, THAT WE DO THAT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR CITY, CITY OF PLANO.

BUT ALSO, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE GREAT PARTNERSHIPS ALL THE WAY AROUND WITH ALL OF OUR MUNICIPALITIES.

AND SO I'M GRATEFUL I'M PROUD AND APPRECIATIVE OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND CERTAINLY APPRECIATIVE OF THE FEEDBACK THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM PARENTS AND HOMEOWNERS.

WE HAD A GRADUATION FINALLY, BECAUSE I'M CLASS 37 AND IT HAPPENED DURING THE COVID YEARS.

AND HEARING FROM OUR FORMER MAYOR, ONE OF THE THINGS HE TALKED ABOUT AS FAR IS THE LS OF LEADERSHIP AND ONE BEING LISTENING, AND I CAN CERTAINLY SAY THAT THAT IS A HUGE COMPONENT OF FOUNDATION OF THIS BOARD TO LISTEN.

TONIGHT I'M PRESENTING ON BEHALF OF REALLY FIVE DIFFERENT SUBCOMMITTEES BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES AND REALLY A TON OF PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND STAFF MEMBERS THAT PUT A LOT OF WORK INTO THESE COMMITTEES.

AND SO I HOPE I DO THEM JUSTICE.

WE START OFF REALLY WITH THE SUMMERTIME.

OVER THE SUMMER, WE MET WITH THE BOARD ADVISORY SUBCOMMITTEE TO LOOK AT THE PLANS OF WORK FOR THESE COMMITTEES AND SET GOALS FOR EACH OF THESE COMMITTEES.

AND THEN THOSE COMMITTEES MOVED FORWARD WITH THEIR WORK.

WE HAVE FOUR BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES.

THEY ARE THERE AS LISTED.

AND THEN WE HAVE BY THE WAY, THAT'S THE POLICY THAT WE HAVE THAT ALLOWS THESE COMMITTEES.

AND THEN WE HAVE A SPECIAL COMMITTEE BECAUSE IT'S REALLY MANDATED BY STATE LAW AND OUR BOARD POLICY, WHICH IS THE SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL.

AND SO THOSE ARE THE FIVE COMMITTEES WE'LL TALK ABOUT TODAY.

I WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE LISTED ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, PARENTS AND STAFF THAT WERE A PART OF THESE COMMITTEES.

FIRST WE'LL START WITH CTE.

THEY HAD TWO GOALS.

THE FIRST GOAL WAS REALLY TO ENHANCE THEIR MARKETING PLANS.

THEY DID A GREAT JOB WITH THAT DOING MORE WITH THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY AT A GLANCE, CREATING THAT INFORMATION BOOK AND THE STUDY BOOK AND HAVING PROGRAM OF STUDY BANNERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SORT OF THE FUTURE OUR ADD DETAILS AND FLOWCHARTS INCREASED PROMOTION AT ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHICH, BY THE WAY, THIS YEAR, AS SOME OF YOU ALL EVEN PARTICIPATED IN THE FIND YOUR FUTURE, WHICH WAS AN AWESOME EVENT.

THEY'VE STARTED THAT THIS YEAR AND CONTINUE THAT MOVING FORWARD.

UPDATE THEIR WEBSITE, ENHANCING THEIR GRAPHICS, CREATING ONE PAGERS FOR EACH PROGRAM OF STUDY.

HERE ARE THE SECOND GOAL, BY THE WAY, OF PROVIDING INPUT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CTE PROGRAMS ON CAMPUSES VERSUS WHAT'S GOING TO GO INTO THE CTE CENTER. SO THAT RED OR MAROON COLUMN, YOU'LL SEE ALL THE ACADEMIES THAT WE HAVE THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT AND WHAT CAMPUSES HOUSED THEM.

YOU'LL SEE THE PATHWAYS IN THE MIDDLE, AND THEN YOU'LL SEE THE PROGRAMS OF STUDY AND THAT BLUE COLUMN.

AND MANY OF THOSE HAVE ALREADY BEEN PRESENTED WHEN WE HAD THE CTE BUILDING UPDATE.

SO I DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THOSE AGAIN.

AND SO WE THANK THE CTE COMMITTEE FOR ALL THEIR WORK.

WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE DIVERSITY COMMITTEE.

HERE ARE THOSE FINE FOLKS THAT SERVED ON THAT COMMITTEE.

THEY HAD TWO GOALS AS WELL.

ONE WAS TO DEVELOP A CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT AUDIT.

AND SO WHEN THEY LOOKED AT THEIR THINGS, I SORT OF LIKE THE EQUATION THAT CAME OUT OF THAT AND MOTIVATION, PLUS MORE OPTIONS FOR LEARNING PLUS A SENSE OF BELONGING, PLUS PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES EQUALS CLOSING THAT ACHIEVEMENT GAP.

AND I CERTAINLY AGREE WITH THAT.

I HOPE YOU DO AS WELL.

THEY DID SOME GREAT WORK AROUND THIS, AND THEIR SECOND GOAL SORT OF GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE FIRST GOAL.

AND THAT'S CREATING CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT TEAMS TO FOCUS ON STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS.

AND SO HERE ARE THE ROLES AND PARAMETERS FOR EQUITY CHAMPIONS FOR EACH CAMPUS.

THE GT COMMITTEE.

HERE ARE THOSE FINE FOLKS.

THEY HAD TWO GOALS AS WELL.

PROVIDING FEEDBACK ON THE CURRENT SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM AND INPUT PROVIDE INPUT ON WAYS TO IMPROVE SUMMER PROGRAMING FOR GT STUDENTS.

THEY LOOKED AT ALL OF OUR SUMMER OFFERINGS FOR GRADES ONE THROUGH SEVEN AND ELEMENTS TO ENSURE EXPLORATION.

THEY DID REVISE SOME COURSES FOR OUR SUMMER PROGRAMS ADDING ON COMMUNICATION AND STEM PROGRAMS. I DON'T WANT TO SAY COURSES TO MIDDLE SCHOOL.

AND OF COURSE, THEY DID MORE PRESENT PRESENTATIONS FOR THE BAYLOR TALENT IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM, THE TIP PROGRAM.

AND WE'RE EXCITED TO SAY THAT NEXT YEAR WE'LL BE EMBARKING UPON ACADEMIC UIL WHICH IS GOING TO BE AWESOME.

AND SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE THEY HAVE THEIR GOAL.

THIS IS SORT OF AN ONGOING GOAL FOR THEM, AND THAT'S TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EXISTING OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPLORE DEVELOPMENT, EXPANSION AND MORE INCLUSION ACTIVITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.

AND THEY HAD THEIR ANNUAL HERO EXPO, WHERE PARENTS AND STAFF SORT OF LEARN FROM EACH OTHER.

IT'S A GREAT EVENT.

THEY ALSO LOOKED AT DIFFERENT TYPES OF INCLUSION PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE OR WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH.

WE OF COURSE, WE'VE HEARD ALREADY THIS MAYBE A FEW MONTHS AGO FROM OUR PANTHER PRIDE GROUP, OUR UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOLS WERE PART OF THAT AND UNIFIED STATE AID.

WE STARTED THAT AS WELL.

VERY EXCITED ABOUT THOSE INITIATIVES.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE HAVE THE SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL.

THOSE GOOD FOLKS THERE, THIS COUNCIL BY THE WAY, IS SORT OF A STATE MANDATED ONE AND A BOARD MANDATED ONE, AND IT IS MANDATED THAT A

THE FIRST GOAL WAS TO LOOK AT ANY UPDATES OR CHANGES IN CURRICULUM GUIDELINES OR LAW AND REVIEW THOSE POLICIES OR LAWS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS. WELL, THERE WAS SOME CHANGES IN LAW.

LONG STORY SHORT.

IT TALKED ABOUT INSTRUCTION ON OPIOIDS AND ASSOCIATED ANTAGONIST.

AND SO WE CURRENTLY PROVIDE INSTRUCTION AND WE GIVE THAT INSTRUCTION FROM GRADES 6 THROUGH 12.

WHEN WE LOOKED AT THE MATERIALS, WE RECOMMENDED THAT WE GO DOWN TO GRADE THREE.

SO WE DID MAKE THAT CHANGE IN SHAC.

WE LOOKED AT THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM.

THEY'RE HAVING A NEW CURRICULUM.

SO AGAIN, THIS WOULD BE IN SHAC'S PURVIEW.

WE LOOKED AT MATERIALS RELATED TO HUMAN REPRODUCTION.

SO WE DIDN'T READ ALL THE BOOKS, BUT WE READ THE PARTS OF THE BOOKS THAT HAD TO DO WITH HUMAN REPRODUCTION.

AND I'M SAYING THIS BECAUSE THEY PUT A LOT OF WORK INTO THIS.

I REALLY WANT TO JUST ACKNOWLEDGE THIS COMMITTEE.

THEY PUT A LOT OF WORK IN A VERY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME.

SO WE LOOKED AT THE SEVENTH GRADE SCIENCE CURRICULUM OF RESOURCES, HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY, TEXTBOOK RESOURCES, ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, AND IB BIOLOGY.

AND THEY MADE RECOMMENDATIONS TO THAT COMMITTEE.

AND THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS WERE PASSED ON TO YOU.

AND THOSE BOOKS HAVE ALREADY BEEN ADOPTED BY YOU ALL AS WELL.

GOAL NUMBER TWO IS ANALYZE CURRENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR FUTURE HEALTH AND WELLNESS INITIATIVES.

SO WE THIS IS PRIMARILY FOR STUDENTS.

AND WE LOOKED AT WHAT WE'RE DOING WITH COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOL.

THIS IS OUR SORT OF OUR CURRENT THINGS WE HAVE GOING ON.

OUR PLANO ISD'S MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS TEAM ARE RISING UP PROGRAM ON THE EAST SIDE CHICAGO SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY AND THE PROGRAM THAT THEY OFFER SHAC DID INITIATE A NEW PROGRAM.

I'M VERY EXCITED, AND I'LL TALK MORE ABOUT IT AT THE END OF THE PRESENTATION, I PROMISE.

BUT IT'S THE WALK, BIKE AND ROLL TO SCHOOL PROGRAM, AND I'LL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT IN A MINUTE.

OTHER NEW PROGRAMS THIS YEAR WAS THE WALKING CLASSROOM THAT'S IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH JC PENNEY.

LONG STORY SHORT, KIDS HAVE A SORT OF A WALKMAN, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT OLD FASHIONED WALKMAN, THAT GIVES THEM LITTLE LESSONS ON DIFFERENT LIFE THINGS MOTIVATION, ENCOURAGEMENT, HARD WORK, THINGS OF THAT NATURE REALLY ALIGNS WITH OUR CHARACTER EDUCATION THINGS.

AND THEY TAKE 3 TO 10 MINUTE WALKS AND THEY DO THIS PRIMARILY IN PASAR.

WE HAVE OUR T-CHATT PARTNERSHIP WITH CHILDREN'S HEALTH TRUSTED CARES.

MANY OF YOU WENT TO THE TRUSTED WORLD EVENT LAST WEEK, AND THAT IS PART OF THIS.

THAT'S SOMETHING WE ADDED THIS YEAR.

AND OF COURSE WE HAVE OUR JOURNEY OF HOPE.

AND WE LOOKED AT OUR MONTHLY NEWSLETTER THAT WE DO OUR DISTRICT WEBSITE PROVIDING ALL THE INFORMATION ON FINANCIAL, HEALTH, WORK LIFE BALANCE, SO ON AND SO FORTH.

WE HAVE OUR EAP PROGRAM HEALTH FAIR.

WE HAD A GREAT PHENOMENAL FALL HEALTH FAIR THIS YEAR.

HUGE SUCCESS BY ANYBODY'S MEASURE.

WE HAVE SITE BASED VACCINATIONS AND FLU SHOTS, WELL-BEING CHALLENGES EVERY MONTH.

AND THEN NEW PROGRAMS WE INCLUDED THIS YEAR WERE THE FULL CIRCLE PROGRAM, WHERE STAFF GET TOGETHER AND TALK ABOUT WAYS TO HANDLE STRESS.

THEY DO IT SORT OF IN A SAFE PLACE.

AND OUR UT SOUTHWEST MOBILE MAMMOGRAMS MOBILE THAT'S REALLY MOBILE.

AND SO THAT WAS EXCITING.

BUT THE DIFFERENCE ARE THE STUDENTS SITTING IN THOSE TWO GROUPS.

SO WE HAVE STUDENTS IN TWO WAY DUAL LANGUAGE WHO ARE SCHOOLED THROUGH TWO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.

SO WE HAVE A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO TYPICALLY ARE ENGLISH PROFICIENT, OR ENGLISH IS THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN THEIR HOME PAIRED WITH STUDENTS IN THAT CLASSROOM WHO ARE ALREADY PROFICIENT IN SPANISH OR SPANISH IS SPOKEN IN THEIR HOME.

SO TWO LANGUAGE GROUPS WHO ARE REALLY LEARNING TOGETHER AND FROM EACH OTHER.

OUR ONE WAY DUAL LANGUAGE IS A STUDENT GROUP WHO SPEAKS SPANISH IN THEIR HOME OR IS NOT YET PROFICIENT.

SO VERY SIMILAR GOALS VERY SIMPLE, SIMILAR MODELS.

BUT THE STUDENTS SITTING IN THOSE CLASSROOMS ARE DIFFERENT.

NEXT YEAR WE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE A PRE-K CLASS, AND WE WILL BE MOVING UP INTO KINDERGARTEN AT DAFFRON EACH YEAR.

SIMILARLY TO WHAT WE DID IN ONE WAY DUAL LANGUAGE, WE WILL ROLL THAT UP.

AND THEN WE ARE STARTING A TWO WAY DUAL LANGUAGE PRE-K CLASSROOM AT HUFFMAN NEXT YEAR.

AND SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

WE HAVE RIGHT NOW 22 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THAT PRE-K CLASSROOM.

AND WE REALLY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THAT REALLY EQUAL, WITH ABOUT 50% BEING EBS AND 50% BEING ENGLISH PROFICIENT.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING ABLE TO GROW THAT.

AND THIS ALLOWS US TO TO GROW OUR PROGRAM, BUT TO ALSO OFFER MORE PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS LIKE TWO WAY DUAL LANGUAGE, WHERE WE CAN START TO INVITE OTHER STUDENTS TO REALLY WORK ON THAT BILINGUALISM AND BILITERACY WITH US.

AND THINK, OKAY, SHOULD WE WHY DO WE HAVE.

WHY WOULD WE HAVE ANY KIDS BELOW LEVEL? BUT WE ALSO HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING A PORTION OF LITERACY INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH AND A PORTION IN SPANISH.

AND SO WHILE WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO SEE THAT GROWTH AND STUDENTS AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL, THAT IS VERY MUCH THROUGH A MONOLINGUAL LENS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT THOSE LEVELS.

SO JUST SOME REALLY CRITICAL WORK THAT WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW WITH SOME BILITERACY TRAJECTORIES AND HOW WE LOOK AT THAT STUDENT DATA.

NOT SO MUCH BECAUSE OF HURDLES, BUT BECAUSE WE WANTED WE DIDN'T WANT TO DISRUPT THE PROGRAM THAT THE STUDENTS WERE IN.

SO IT SEEMS LIKE, WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST SWITCH TO ONE WAY DUAL LANGUAGE ALL OVERNIGHT? BUT THE CHALLENGE IN THAT IS THAT WHEN YOU'VE HAD STUDENTS IN THE EARLY EXIT MODEL, THERE HAS NOT BEEN THE TYPE OF TIME AND TREATMENT THAT COMES ALONG WITH DUAL LANGUAGE.

SO THAT SLOW IMPLEMENTATION IS MORE ABOUT DOING WHAT'S RIGHT FOR KIDS THAN IT IS ABOUT HURDLES.

I WOULD SAY WHAT WHAT TOOK A LOT OF JUST KIND OF PRE PLANNING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BEFORE THAT SHIFT HAPPENED WAS A MINDSET BECAUSE EARLY EXIT BILINGUAL HAS DIFFERENT GOALS THAN A DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, WE NEEDED TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTOOD THOSE GOALS AND KNEW HOW TO IMPLEMENT INSTRUCTION THAT LED TO THOSE GOALS IN THE CLASSROOM.

AND THEN AS FAR AS FINDING STAFF TO TEACH THESE PROGRAMS, HAS THAT BEEN RELATIVELY EASY TO FIND FOLKS? BUT WE REALLY PARTNER WITH OUR HR DEPARTMENT AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE RECRUITING IN PLACES WHERE WE COULD HAVE A HIGHER NUMBER OF BILINGUAL CANDIDATES COMING OUT FROM.

DO YOU WANT US TO TRANSFER HER, OR DO YOU WANT TO MAYBE DO THIS PILOT PROGRAM? AND I THINK YOU'RE ONE OF THREE PEOPLE WHO CALLED AND ASKED ME THAT QUESTION LAST YEAR, BECAUSE IT THE INTENTIONALITY WITH WHICH YOU ALL HAVE DONE THIS AND WE AS PARENTS WERE ASKED TO MAKE A SEVEN YEAR COMMITMENT.

RIGHT. THIS IS PRE-K THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

IF YOU PULL YOUR CHILD OUT OF THIS PROGRAM IN THIRD GRADE, WE LOSE THAT SPOT BECAUSE WE CAN'T TAKE SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN A MONOLINGUAL UP UNTIL, YOU KNOW, KINDERGARTEN FIRST, SECOND AND PUT THEM IN THAT SPOT.

AND SO THE INTENTIONALITY WITH WHICH YOU EDUCATED AND,IN SOME WAYS KIND OF SCREENED PARENTS AND FAMILIES FOR THAT TWO WAY PILOT PROGRAM.

AND IT'S JUST A REALLY VERY ENCOURAGING THING TO SEE THE KIDS JUST SO SO HAPPY TO, YOU KNOW, TO MAKE THESE FRIENDS WITH DIFFERENT LIFE EXPERIENCES AND WHO MAYBE COME FROM A DIFFERENT COUNTRY OR SPEAK A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE AT HOME.

ON THE GOING TO DO COMMUNITY OBSERVATIONS I UNDERSTAND THAT MY DAUGHTER LIKES TO INTERROGATE ANY STAFF THAT SHOW UP TO DO OBSERVATIONS.

THEIR FIRST PAYROLL WILL COME OUT OF SKYWARD IN SEPTEMBER.

SO THAT'S WHY YOU SEE TWO DATES THERE AND THEN THE HIGHLIGHTED DATE FOR THE HISTORICAL DATA.

ORIGINALLY THAT WAS GOING TO BE NOVEMBER ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE.

WE DID LOOKING AT THAT NEED TO GET SOME OF THAT DATA IN PLACE TO BE ABLE TO RUN TRANSCRIPTS AND GPAS FOR SENIORS FOR EARLY ADMISSION.

SO THIS IS WE WERE ALREADY HAD PUSHED THE DATE UP ONCE FROM WHAT SKYWARD NORMALLY DOES.

THEY'VE BEEN VERY ACCOMMODATING TO PUSH BACK EVEN FURTHER INTO AUGUST.

TO MEET THAT TIMELINE WE ARE WE'RE WORKING WITH COUNSELING SOME OF THE CAMPUSES.

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME COUNSELORS AND SOME REGISTRARS WORKING ADDITIONAL OFF CONTRACT DAYS IN THE SUMMER TO HELP GET SOME OF THAT DATA CLEANED UP AND STAGED.

AND SO WE HAVE A VERY TIGHT TIMELINE, AND WE'VE COMMUNICATED THAT TO CAMPUSES.

WE ARE GOING TO PULL FOR THE SENIOR HIGHS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AS WELL.

SOME ADDITIONAL HELP OVER WITH THAT FIRST PRIORITY BEING ON MAKING SURE THAT SENIORS ARE FIRST READY WITH TRANSCRIPTS AND GPA, AND THEN WE WILL FOLLOW IN WITH THE OTHER GRADES AFTER THAT. AND THEN THE LAST PIECE GOING INTO NOVEMBER, TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR, I WILL BE APPLICANT TRACKING AND ONBOARDING FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE FALL.

THE PL AMBASSADORS ARE PLANNERS OR INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE GOING TO PROVIDE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT TO CAMPUS STAFF AT THEIR OWN CAMPUSES AND GIVES THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN NEW TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL TOOLS, AS WELL AS SOME INSTRUCTIONAL BEST PRACTICES.

FOR THE 24-25 SCHOOL YEAR THE PLANNERS PRIMARY FOCUS WILL BE ON TRAINING AND SUPPORTING TEACHERS THROUGH SKYWARD AND GRADEBOOK TRAINING.

PLANNERS WILL BE THE FIRST LINE OF TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR THEIR CAMPUSES.

FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR, PLANNERS ARE SELECTED BY THE CAMPUS PRINCIPAL.

THE SELECTED STAFF MEMBER HAS TO BE A CURRENT FULL TIME PLANO ISD TEACHER.

THERE WILL BE TWO PLANNER PER HIGH SCHOOL AND SENIOR HIGH, ONE PLANNER PER MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THEY'LL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND TRAINING DURING THE SUMMER INSPIRE CONFERENCE.

THEY'LL HAVE A THREE HOUR SESSION EITHER ON MAY 28TH OR 29TH.

WE HAVE THAT SPLIT UP BETWEEN ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY.

AND THEN MAY 30TH WE WILL GIVE THEM ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITY TO COME BACK WITH OUR SKYWARD PEOPLE WILL BE ON SITE THAT WEEK FOR ANY QUESTIONS THEY HAVE ANY FOLLOW UPS? ANY ONE ON ONE INSTRUCTION.

THEY WILL ALSO BE EXPECTED TO ATTEND AN ADDITIONAL PULLOUT FULL DAY TRAINING IN THE FALL AND ONE MORE AGAIN IN THE SPRING.

THEY WILL BE SERVING AS A LEADER AND PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR THEIR CAMPUS.

AND THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO DELIVER TRAINING TO THEIR CAMPUS STAFF DURING STAFF DEVELOPMENT WEEK.

SO THAT FIRST WEEK TEACHERS ARE BACK WHEN WE HAVE STAFF DEVELOPMENT GOING ON, THERE'LL BE 90 MINUTES DEDICATED TO SKYWARD TO GRADE BOOK THE CORE THINGS THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO TO BE UP AND RUNNING ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, TO TAKE ATTENDANCE, TO ENTER GRADES, TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS.

AND THEY, AS I MENTIONED, WILL PROVIDE SUPPORT AS NEEDED AT THE CAMPUS LEVEL.

AND IT'S BEEN A REALLY GREAT EXPERIENCE.

I SPENT THREE DAYS, BASICALLY, WE ARRIVED ON APRIL THE 10TH, THE EVENING OF TWO AND A HALF DAYS IN HOUSTON AND DURING THIS TIME PERIOD.

AND I JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF INSIGHT AS TO HOW MUCH EXPOSURE WE HAD IN THIS SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

THOSE ARE ALL THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT WE TOUCHED POINTS WITH KATY AND FORT BEND I WILL HIGHLIGHT A LITTLE BIT MORE BECAUSE WE ACTUALLY DID SITE VISITS TO THOSE CAMPUSES AND TO

THOSE DISTRICTS, BUT WE HAD SPEAKERS FROM ALIEF AND LAMAR AND ROYAL AND THEY WERE SUPERINTENDENTS, AND THEY WERE OTHER TRUSTEE MEMBERS FROM ALL THE DIFFERENT PLACES.

AND THEN THE HOMETOWN NEWS, EACH OF US I MY HOMETOWN NEWS WHEN WE WERE IN CORPUS.

BUT THIS IS THE NUMBER OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT PRESENT TO US TO TALK ABOUT NINE MINUTES, THE HIGHLIGHT OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN THEIR DISTRICTS.

AND IT'S JUST AMAZING, THE SPONGE YOU BECOME AND HOW MUCH YOU LEARN AND PERSPECTIVE.

I REALLY WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS BECAUSE TEXAS IS SO BIG AND SO VAST THAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I HAD AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THINGS ARE DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT PLACES, AND IT'S JUST FASCINATING.

YOUR KIDS HAVE TO GO HOW FAR ON A BUS EVERY DAY, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE THESE MANY RESOURCES OR YOU DON'T HAVE THESE RESOURCES.

ONE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS, EVERY STUDENT HAS AN APPLE PRODUCT.

THEY HAVE APPLE IPADS, I MEAN, ALL OF THEM.

AND IT'S, YOU KNOW, REALLY EXCITING TO HEAR.

AND SO THIS IS WHAT WE GOT TO DO.

I ESPECIALLY WAS EXCITED THIS PARTICULAR FIELD TRIP IS BECAUSE WE GOT TO VISIT TWO DIFFERENT CTE CENTERS.

AND SO LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THOSE.

SO I'LL JUST REALLY GIVE YOU THE HIGHLIGHTS.

KATY, THE MILLER CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 2007, WHICH IS REALLY INTERESTING BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID, WELL, WE WOULD HAVE DONE THIS DIFFERENTLY OR WE WOULD HAVE DONE THIS DIFFERENTLY.

AND SO IT WAS REALLY FUNNY BECAUSE I WAS TEXTING THERESA GOING, YOU KNOW, THIS IS WHAT I'M LEARNING.

AND SHE'S LIKE, I'M DOING SOMETHING TOO.

SO THAT WAS REALLY GREAT.

BUT REALLY A LOT OF GREAT THINGS GOING ON THERE FOR KATY.

KATY IS A LITTLE BIT BIGGER THAN WE ARE.

I THINK THEY'RE ABOUT 90,000 STUDENTS.

SO HOUSTON SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE VERY LARGE.

THE RAINES ACADEMY WAS REALLY, REALLY SPECIAL.

I'VE ALREADY TALKED TO DR. GOBER ABOUT THIS AND SOME OTHERS.

IT WAS AN ACADEMY FOR STUDENTS 17 AND OLDER, AND IT WAS A FACILITY JUST TO HELP WITH CREDIT ACCREDITATION ACCELERATION. IT WAS AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL BUILDING.

IT IS COMPLETELY DONE DIFFERENTLY THAN ANY OTHER CAMPUS THAT YOU'VE EVER BEEN A PART, BECAUSE IT IS REALLY IT'S OPEN FROM 7 A.M.

TO 6 P.M.

EVERY DAY, AND STUDENTS ARE JUST ASKED TO BE THERE DURING A FOUR HOUR INCREMENT SOMETIME DURING THE DAY SO THEY CAN COME AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY.

THEY CAN COME AT THE END OF THE DAY.

THESE ARE STUDENTS WHO MAY EITHER BE PREGNANT OR PARENTS.

IT COULD BE STUDENTS WHO ARE UNHOUSED.

IT COULD BE STUDENTS THAT FOR WHATEVER REASON, GOT BEHIND IN THEIR CREDITS.

AND SO IT'S JUST AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FACILITY.

A COUPLE OF ASPECTS OF IT THAT GAVE ME PAUSE IS THAT THEY HAVE AN ACCESS IN THEIR DOWNSTAIRS BASEMENT AREA.

WE TALKED EARLIER ABOUT BASEMENT.

[INAUDIBLE] TEXAS. BEEN THERE DOWNSTAIRS THEY HAVE A FULL ACCOUTERMENT OF WASHERS AND DRYERS BECAUSE THERE ARE STUDENTS THAT DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO A WASHER AND DRYER, AND SO THEY CAN COME AND DO THEIR CLOTHES IN THIS FACILITY.

AND IT'S ADJACENT TO ACROSS THE PARKING LOT FROM THE CTE CENTER.

SO THEY COULD DO FOUR HOURS OF CREDIT RECOVERY, BUT THEN THEY ALSO HAVE ROOM IN THEIR SCHEDULE SO THEY COULD GO OVER AND GET CERTIFICATIONS AND DO THINGS AT THE.

IT'S SO NICE.

THE OTHER THING THAT WAS REALLY COOL, THE PRINCIPAL WAS ALSO EXTREMELY DYNAMIC.

HE WANTED THEM TO BE SURE AND HAVE A REGULAR EXPERIENCE OF WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE AS ADULTS INTO THE ADULT WORLD.

AND SO WE WALKED UP THIS BANK OF STAIRS AND IT WAS A WORKOUT FACILITY LIKE NOTHING YOU'VE EVER SEEN, EVEN IN COMPETITIVE WITH LIKE LIFETIME OR ANY OF THOSE KIND OF PLACES, BECAUSE PHYSICAL FITNESS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

BUT THESE KIDS ARE NOT GOING TO BE KIND OF KIDS WHO ARE GOING TO BE IN THE GYM, BUT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO EQUIPMENT SO THAT THEY CAN WORK OUT.

AND AGAIN, ANYTIME IN THAT TIME PERIOD FROM 7 A.M.

TO 6 P.M.. SO IT REALLY WAS REALLY GREAT WRAP AROUND.

THE OTHER THING THAT WAS GREAT IS THEY DO HAVE A DRIVER'S COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE.

THEY HAD THREE GIANT TRUCKS ON THE PARKING LOT, AND STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO AT 18, BE ABLE TO HAVE A COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE EARLY.

SO IT'S PRETTY AMAZING TO BE ABLE TO FINISH THEIR, GET THEIR CREDITS, GET THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, AND THEN HAVE A JOB THAT'S GOING TO GIVE THEM A PRETTY GOOD, DECENT WAGE.

AND THEN THEY ARE ALSO LOOKING AT AND WAS VERY PROUD OF THEM TO SAY NOT EVERY KID CAN MAKE IT.

AND SO THE DISTRICT IS LOOKING AT HAVING A DRE PROGRAM THERE.

IT'S NOT THEY DON'T GET ANY CREDIT FOR IT.

IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING FOR THEM NECESSARILY, BUT IT'S WHAT'S BEST FOR KIDS.

SO IT WAS A PRETTY AMAZING FACILITY.

IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE.

WE DID THAT ON THURSDAY.

ON FRIDAY WE WENT TO FORT BEND ISD.

AND IT WAS ALSO WE EXPLORED THEIR JAMES REESE CENTER AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER.

PLEASE NOTE THE YEAR IT OPENED AND WE'LL ALL PAUSE.

BUT BEFORE IT COULD OPEN THEY HAD A VERY INTERESTING EXPERIENCE.

AND THIS IS WHERE WE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT HOW A SCHOOL BOARD, A GROUP OF TRUSTEES, A LEADERSHIP TEAM MAY HAVE TO NAVIGATE SOME THINGS YOU DON'T

EXPECT. SO IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD OF THE SUGAR LAND 95, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU GOOGLE IT AND SEE ALL THE VIDEOS ABOUT IT.

BUT THEY BROKE GROUND ON THEIR CAMPUS FOR THE CTE CENTER, AND DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE BODIES BURIED ON THE PROPERTY THAT THEY HAD. NOT BODY BODIES.

95 GRAVES WERE FOUND ON THIS PARTICULAR PLOT OF LAND.

AND IT WAS A VERY SIGNIFICANT PLOT OF LAND FOR WHAT THEIR FACILITY WAS GOING TO.

IT WAS WHERE ALL THE WATER, ALL THE ELECTRICITY WAS COMING THROUGH THIS PARTICULAR PART OF THE PROPERTY THAT IS SUGAR LAND.

AND DURING THE TIME OF RECONSTRUCTION OUR RULES AS A 13TH AMENDMENT, WHICH PROVIDED FOR THE FREEDOM OF PEOPLE FROM BEING ENSLAVED HAD A PROVISION IN IT THAT UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN CONVICTED OF A CRIME.

AND SO DURING THAT TIME PERIOD, BECAUSE WE HAVE LOTS OF SUGAR FIELDS THAT NEEDED TO BE ATTENDED TO, THERE WERE MANY PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES ALL ACROSS EVERYWHERE BUT IN SUGAR LAND WHERE THEY CHANGED THE RULES FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR AND HOW THEY CAN CONDUCT THEMSELVES.

SO YOU COULD LOOK AT A WHITE WOMAN AND YOU COULD BE PUT IN JAIL.

YOU COULD WALK ACROSS THE STREET IN THE WRONG WAY AND YOU COULD BE PUT IN JAIL.

AND SO THEN THERE WAS SOMETHING CALLED A CONVICT LEASING PROGRAM.

SO THEN THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RUNNING THE SUGAR FIELDS CAN HAVE THESE FOLKS FROM RENT, IF YOU WILL, HUMAN BEINGS, THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY MUCH AT ALL FOR THEM TO DO HARD LABOR.

UNLIKE SLAVERY, WHERE THIS IS JUST THIS IS A REALLY HARD STORY.

UNLIKE IN SLAVERY, WHERE SOMEONE OWNED A HUMAN BEING AND THAT WAS THEIR PROPERTY AND THEY WANTED THEIR PROPERTY TO BE HEALTHY, YOU HAVE A CONVICT THAT'S WORKING FOR YOU AND YOU WORK THEM TO DEATH, LITERALLY.

AND THEN YOU CAN JUST GO GET ANOTHER PERSON AT THE JAIL.

SO IN THIS PARTICULAR TIME PERIOD, THERE WERE ACTUALLY MORE THAN 95 GRAVES, BUT THERE WERE 95 GRAVES THAT HAD BODIES IN THEM.

SO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAD TO PAUSE THEIR ENTIRE CTE PROGRAM, THEIR WHOLE BUILDING.

THEY HAD TO THEY EXHUMED ALL THE BODIES AND IT COST THEM TO THE TUNE OF $125,000 A WEEK TO HAVE THEM BE PRESERVED THE WAY THEY NEEDED TO BE PRESERVED WHILE THEY FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE DOING WITH ALL OF THEM.

THAT WAS TWO YEARS THAT THEY WERE SPENDING $125,000 A WEEK FOR THIS.

AND UNFORTUNATELY, THEY FOUND THEMSELVES IN A SITUATION WHERE THEY DID NOT GET ANY SUPPORT FROM ANYBODY ELSE, NO ONE FROM THE STATE, NO ONE FROM THEY WENT TO THE BUSINESS THAT WAS IN TOWN, A PURE CANE SUGAR, WHICH IS THE BENEFICIARY OF THIS LONG HISTORY.

AND THEY SAID INTERESTING.

THEY HAD NO SUPPORT.

AND BEFORE IT WAS ALL SAID AND DONE BETWEEN ATTORNEYS AND FIGURING OUT ALL THE THINGS, IT WAS A OVER TWO YEAR PROCESS AND THEY THE 12 MILLION ALONE WAS TO TAKE CARE OF THE BODIES, BUT THEY ENDED UP DOING DNA TESTING ON ALL OF THEM.

THEY DID ALL OF THIS LEGAL THAT THEY HAD TO DO IT WAS TO THE TUNES OF IT WAS EITHER 50 OR $500 MILLION THAT THEY HAD TO EXPEND TO TAKE CARE OF ALL THIS.

I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT ZERO IS IN THERE, BUT IF YOU CAN IMAGINE OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS JOHNNY IS NOW LOOKING OVER THERE GOING, WHERE WOULD WE COME UP WITH THAT KIND OF MONEY TO DO THIS? AND THIS IS NOT PART OF THE MISSION.

SO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAD TO MAKE SOME REALLY HARD CHOICES.

THERE WAS A LOT OF UNREST IN THE COMMUNITY.

ALL THE TRUSTEES HAD THE BENEFICIARY OF POLICE OFFICERS IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSES, WHICH WE HAVE SEEN THAT BEFORE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

BUT IT WAS REALLY, REALLY HARD.

BUT THEY LEARNED A LOT.

AND THEY FINALLY MADE SOME DECISIONS.

AND SO THEY HAVE THERE IS THE BODIES WERE PLACED BACK IN THE, IN THE GROUND.

ALL OF THEM HAVE BEEN DNA TESTED.

AND THEY HOPE THAT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE THAT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS TRYING TO RAISE MONEY TO PROVIDE A PROPER MEMORIAL AND A PROPER HISTORICAL LANDMARK TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THESE STORIES.

BUT THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT IT IS IN MY CLASS THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF KATY ISD AT THE TIME, AND HE'S NO LONGER A SITTING TRUSTEE.

IT WAS A VERY TRAUMATIC TIME PERIOD FOR HIM IN PARTICULAR.

AND HE WALKED US THROUGH DAY BY DAY, ALMOST WEEK BY WEEK OF ALL THE THINGS THAT THEIR BOARD HAD TO FACE AND WHAT THEY HAD TO COME UP FROM THAT FROM.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CAME UP WITH FROM THIS IS THEY DUG INTO POLICY AND THEY DUG INTO SOME THINGS TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SOME ANSWERS.

CONSIDERATIONS, THINGS TO THINK ABOUT THAT I LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE.

ONE IS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR CTE CENTER TO HAVE FLEXIBILITY.

THE KATY EXCUSE ME, FORT BEND HAD THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE A PHYSICAL THERAPY UNIT AS PART OF THEIR CTE CENTER AND THEN COME TO FIND OUT, THAT WASN'T GOING TO WORK, AND THERE WAS SOME SPACING ISSUES BECAUSE THEY LOST A GREAT DEAL PART OF THEIR FACILITY.

AND THEY HAVE A VETERINARY FACILITY NOW, WHICH IS INTERESTING THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO DO THAT.

THE OTHER THING, ESPECIALLY FROM KATY TO FORT BEND, IS HOW IMPORTANT AND I KNOW WE ARE DOING THIS, BUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO INTEGRATE THE CLASSROOM IN THE LAB IN THE SAME SPOT. SO WHEN KATY DID THEIRS, THEY WOULD HAVE THE CLASSROOM AND THEN EITHER ACROSS THE HALL OR THROUGH A WALL, THERE WOULD BE THE LAB.

AND THAT BECAME PROBLEMATIC.

AND THEY HAD TO ACTUALLY INSTALL WINDOWS SO THAT TEACHERS COULD SEE STUDENTS.

AND SO THAT DOES INCREDIBLE PART.

FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S HAPPENING ACROSS THE COUNTRY IS WHEN YOU ARE BUILDING NEW ON A PIECE OF LAND, IS TO DO A LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT STATEMENT. SO WHO HAS BEEN THERE BEFORE? WHO HAS BEEN THERE, A PART OF THAT? AND SO THAT KIND OF CAME PART OF WHAT FORT BEND DID.

AND HAVING A SCHOOL BOARD POLICY COMMITTEE WHERE YOU LOOK AT AND EVALUATE YOUR POLICIES AND WHAT THEY ARE, THE BIGGEST BULLET POINT WAS NEVER WASTE A CRISIS. SO WHEN SOMETHING'S HAPPENING, FIGURING OUT WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PUT IT INTO PROCEDURE, PUT THINGS INTO POLICY.

SO FORT BEND ISD HAS A LOCAL POLICY THAT EVERY SINGLE STUDENT IN FORT BEND ISD WILL LEARN ALL ABOUT THE SUGAR LAND 95 THEY WILL LEARN ALL ABOUT CONVICT LEASING.

THEY WILL LEARN ABOUT THEY ARE FILLING OUT THE DNA AND KNOWING THE NAMES OF SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT WERE A PART OF THIS.

AND EVERY STUDENT AS PART OF THEIR POLICY, MUST HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORY OF WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN IN, WHICH IS IS PRETTY INCREDIBLE.

SO OVERALL, THINGS TO BE AWARE OF AND THINGS THAT I VALUE.

ONE IS PROXIMITY.

AND THE BIGGEST THING ABOUT ALL THIS IS ADVOCACY AND WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY IS TO LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND DIFFERENT SITUATIONS AND LEARN HOW WE CAN BE BETTER ADVOCATES FOR WHAT WE DO.

AND OUR CLASS IS VERY MUCH PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE CAN BE DOING TO MAKE SURE THAT 5.2 MILLION STUDENTS HAVE FULLY FUNDED SCHOOLS AND FULLY FUNDED PROGRAMS. SO IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE.

APPLICATIONS FOR CLASS 2025 ARE NOW OPEN.

THEY WILL APPLICATIONS THEY WILL TAKE UNTIL JULY 1ST.

THE REQUIREMENTS ARE THAT YOU DO HAVE TO BE SITTING MEMBER OF YOUR SCHOOL BOARD FOR AT LEAST 18 MONTHS UPON APPLICATION.

IT WAS A HUGE, HUGE FACILITY, AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE WELDING CENTER SAID, IT'S NOT ENOUGH.

NOW THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE SAID, FOR THEY ARE IN HOUSTON AND THERE IS A GREAT NEED FOR BECAUSE OF THE PORTS AND BECAUSE OF THE OIL INDUSTRY THAT IS THERE, THAT THERE IS A PIPELINE OF EMPLOYMENT FOR KIDS IN THAT ENVIRONMENT, WHICH IS FASCINATING.

AND SO THAT WAS KIND OF COOL.

AND THERE WAS THEY ALSO HAVE IT'S AQUATICS FOR, YOU KNOW, AQUATICS FOR ANIMAL, YOU KNOW, FOR ANIMALS, AQUATIC ANIMALS.

THEY HAVE A WHOLE SECTION ON THAT THAT'S THERE, WHICH IS, OF COURSE, WITH THERE BEING ON THE COAST.

BUT IT'S COMPLETELY UNCHARTED TERRITORY FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

RIGHT. AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF PLANO AND HOW SCHOOLS DEVELOPED AND HOW OUR NEIGHBORHOODS DEVELOPED AND EVERYTHING ELSE AND, AND JUST HAVING GROWN UP HERE, I SAW MUCH OF THIS AS A CHILD.

RIGHT? LIKE JUST HOUSES GOING UP LEFT AND RIGHT AND THESE SCHOOLS GOING UP EVERYWHERE.

AND NOW THAT WE'RE IN A DIFFERENT PHASE OF OUR COMMUNITY, WE ARE IN UNCHARTERED WATERS AND WE'RE, GOING DOWN A NEW PATH.

AND WHAT I THINK IS REALLY IMPORTANT ABOUT THIS POLICY AND HAVING A POLICY FOR IT IS THE TRANSPARENCY OF THIS PROCESS.

AND WE HAVE GONE THROUGH THESE MEETINGS AND, YOU KNOW, THE FRAMEWORK WAS PRESENTED SOME OF THE THINGS CONTAINED IN THIS POLICY, THE EFFICIENCY FRAMEWORK AND THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES WERE PRESENTED AT THESE COMMUNITY MEETINGS.

BUT PUTTING IN A POLICY REALLY SORT OF CODIFIES IT IN A WAY SO THAT PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T ATTEND THOSE COMMUNITY MEETINGS, OR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT REGULAR WATCHERS OF OUR BOARD MEETINGS CAN GO AND REFERENCE THAT ON THE WEBSITE.

AND YOU KNOW, I TEND TO THINK PROBABLY ABOUT 90% OF WHAT YOU SEE ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS, IS NOT TRUE. AND MAYBE THAT'S MY OWN BIAS, BUT THE POINT THAT I'M MAKING HERE IS WE ALL HAVE TRUSTEES HAVE SEEN A LOT OF VERY INTERESTING SPECULATION ABOUT THIS FACILITY WORK ALL OVER THE INTERNET, OR HEARD SPECULATION.

I WAS AT A BIRTHDAY PARTY TWO WEEKS AGO, AND A MOM TOLD ME WE WERE ABOUT TO CLOSE TEN SCHOOLS, AND I WAS LIKE, HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT? BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW THAT YET.

[LAUGHTER] AND I AM PERHAPS IN A POSITION TO KNOW.

AND SO I APPRECIATE THE WORK IN DOING THIS, BECAUSE I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE TRANSPARENT WITH OUR COMMUNITY WHEN AND WHY WE WOULD CHOOSE TO MAKE A DRAMATIC CHANGE, LIKE CONSOLIDATING A CAMPUS OR LIKE RETIRING A CAMPUS.

AND THEN WHAT WE, AS A BOARD LAID OUT IN THE EFFICIENCY FRAMEWORK, AS WELL AS THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES THAT WE PUT TOGETHER AS A GROUP SO THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN SEE HERE IS WHAT THE COMMITTEE WAS ASKED TO CONSIDER.

HERE ARE THE THINGS THAT WERE, YOU KNOW, IMPORTANT TO THE BOARD, THE PEOPLE DOING THIS WORK SO THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHY THIS WORK HAS BEEN DONE. AND THIS MAY NOT BE THE LAST TIME WE HAVE TO DO THIS WORK.

I THINK THAT THAT'S, YOU KNOW, THAT'S IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THAT BASED ON BIRTH RATES, OR WE ALL EXPECT A LOT OF THE HOUSING TO REGENERATE. WHEN PEOPLE LIKE MY PARENTS SELL THEIR HOUSE, EVEN THOUGH MY PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SELL THEIR HOUSE BECAUSE THEY PROVIDE CHILDCARE FOR ME A LOT.

BUT WE, YOU KNOW, WE EXPECT A LOT OF REGENERATION AND WE EXPECT SOME CHANGES IN OUR COMMUNITY AND UNDERSTANDING HOW WE HAVE PRINCIPLES AND POLICIES AND A PROCESS TO ADAPT TO THOSE CHANGES, WHETHER IT'S GROWTH OR WHETHER IT IS YOU KNOW.

NOT NECESSARILY CONTRACTION, BUT WE HAVE CAMPUSES THAT WE MAY NOT NEED RIGHT NOW, OR WE HAVE PROPERTIES THAT WE MAY NOT NEED RIGHT NOW.

I THINK THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO PROVIDE MORE TRANSPARENCY TO THE COMMUNITY.

SO I APPRECIATE THE NEW POLICY HERE IN THE ATTEMPT TO DO THAT.

WELL, AND I EVERYTHING YOU SAID I AGREE WITH AND THE INTENTIONALITY BEHIND THIS POLICY IS JUST THAT.

AND I DON'T THINK THIS BOARD WILL ALWAYS BE THIS BOARD, BECAUSE AT SOME POINT, WE WILL RETIRE AND MOVE ON. I'M SURE THAT THE EARLIER SPEAKER HOPES THAT SOONER THAN LATER FOR ME, BUT THIS PUTS IT INTO A DOCUMENT THAT WE CAN FOLLOW AND THAT FUTURE BOARDS CAN BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND.

OKAY, WHY DID THEY DO IT THIS WAY? AND WHAT IS THE ROADMAP THAT WE CAN FOLLOW.

BUT ONE THING THAT I THINK IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT ABOUT THIS IS THIS IS A PROCESS THAT WE PUT TOGETHER AS THE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES OF YOUR COMMUNITY AND THE INSISTENCE UPON HAVING A COMMUNITY COMMITTEE LOOKING AT THIS AND THE INSISTENCE UPON WHAT THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES WERE GOING TO BE FOR THE COMMUNITY RATHER THAN JUST GOING TO THE DEMOGRAPHER AND SAYING, GIVE US SOME IDEAS AND THEN PLOWING FORWARD WITH A PLAN RIGHT.
