AND I KNOW THAT, THE BEST PART OF RECOGNIZING OUR BOARD FOR ALL OF THEIR SERVICE AND THE TIME AND PASSION AND DEDICATION THAT YOU PUT INTO THE WORK, THE BEST PART IS OUR KIDS, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THE KIDS ARE ALWAYS AT THE VERY HEART OF ALL OF YOUR DECISIONS AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO.

AND IT WAS A COLD, WINTRY, TUESDAY NIGHT.

AND SO, WE DID NOT HAVE THE KID'S PORTION.

SO TONIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO PICK UP WITH THE KIDS, WHICH IS THE VERY BEST PART.

AND I HOPE THE KIDS SINGING OUT IN THE ENTRY JUST SOUNDED AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL.

SO, TO START, THIS EVENING'S RECOGNITION, WE'RE HONORED TO HAVE THE HANDS AND HARMONY CHOIR AND STUDENTS FROM THE REGIONAL DAY SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF PROGRAM AT DAVIS ELEMENTARY TO LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE UNITED STATES AND THE TEXAS FLAGS, FOLLOWED BY OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM.

HELLO, GUYS. MY NAME IS MARGARET AND I'M A TEACHER AT DAVIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND THAT'S WHERE I STARTED MY JOURNEY IN EDUCATION. SO, I STARTED AT DAVIS.

I WAS THREE YEARS OLD, SO I'M REALLY HAPPY THAT THE PRESCHOOL IS BACK THERE AGAIN.

AND I PASSED BY MY OLD PRESCHOOL CLASS EVERY DAY, AND I REMEMBER ALL THESE WONDERFUL TEACHERS THAT I HAD GROWING UP.

AND I'M SURE I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M TEARY EYED.

SO, I THINK IT'S REALLY, SPECIAL FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THIS BEHIND, LIKE, WENT OUT MY TEACHER, I WANT TO BE WHERE I AM TODAY, AND I'M JUST REALLY COOL TO BE GIVING HAND TO HARMONY.

BECAUSE I USED TO BE A HAND TO HARMONY MYSELF.

SO, IT'S JUST REALLY COOL TO SEE THOSE STUDENTS LIKE, GIVE ME WHAT I USED TO DO.

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY I'M JUST GRATEFUL FOR OUR PLANO PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF TO GIVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY I HAVE TODAY.

SO YEAH.

HELLO EVERYONE! MY NAME IS KELSEY WEAVER, AND I AM A DEAF PRE-K TEACHER AND TEAM LEADER.

I WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY HISTORY WITH THE DSPD PROGRAM BEFORE TALKING ABOUT PRE-K AT DAVIS.

BEFORE I BECAME A TEACHER IN THE DSPD PROGRAM, I WAS SERVED BY THE DSPD AS A STUDENT.

I HAD AN ITINERANT TEACHER FROM THE PROGRAM COME OUT TO MY HOME DISTRICT WEEKLY, AND SHE HELPED ME REACH MY POTENTIAL.

ANOTHER TEACHER IN THE PROGRAM WAS MY MATH TUTOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, AND SHE SERVED AS A MENTOR THROUGH MY COLLEGE YEARS.

SHE EVENTUALLY LED ME TO THE GRAD SCHOOL PROGRAM I ATTENDED WHERE I FOCUSED ON DEAF EDUCATION AND HEARING SCIENCE.

SO. SO BEING HERE BEFORE YOU AS A TEACHER OF KIDDOS, JUST LIKE MYSELF, IS A FULL CIRCLE MOMENT.

AND SO, I THANK YOU ALL FOR THAT.

AND THEN WHEN I FIRST STARTED WORKING AS A TEACHER IN PISD, I WAS PLACED AT PEARSON EARLY CHILDHOOD SCHOOL FOR SIX YEARS BEFORE THE DSPD PROGRAM WAS MOVED TO DAVIS.

THIS YEAR AT DAVIS HAS BEEN AMAZING.

THE STAFF AND STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SO WELCOMING TO THE PRE-K TEAM AND TO OUR LITTLE LEARNERS.

THE BENEFITS OF THE TRANSITION ARE NUMEROUS, BUT HERE ARE A FEW THAT HAVE STOOD OUT TO THE PRE-K TEAM.

OUR STUDENTS HAVE BENEFITED TREMENDOUSLY FROM SEEING THEIR DEAF PEERS, AND THEY NOW HAVE ROLE MODELS IN THE UPPER GRADE STUDENTS THAT ARE JUST LIKE THEMSELVES.

AT DAVIS, OUR STUDENTS ARE UPLIFTED AND ENCOURAGED TO BE WHO THEY ARE.

WE HAVE WITNESSED ADVOCACY ON MANY OCCASIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS FROM COWORKERS THAT ARE NOT IN THE DSPD THEMSELVES.

THE ADMINISTRATION TEAM HAS GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MEET OUR NEEDS.

I HAVE HEARD MANY TIMES FROM MY TEAM ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL SEEN AND HOW AT HOME THEY FEEL AT DAVIS.

IT HAS BEEN HUMBLING TO SEE THE GREAT LENGTHS THAT THE DAVIS DOLPHINS ARE WILLING TO GO FOR OUR STUDENTS.

SO, WITH GRATITUDE IN MY HEART, I THANK OUR SCHOOL BOARD FOR WHAT YOU DO FOR DAVIS ELEMENTARY AND FOR PISD AS A WHOLE AND HAS HAD A GREAT IMPACT ON NOT ONLY MYSELF, BUT MY STUDENTS AS WELL. THANK YOU.

I'LL TALK REAL BRIEFLY ABOUT OUR HANDS TO HARMONY CHOIR.

WE DON'T HAVE A TRADITIONAL CHOIR AT OUR SCHOOL BECAUSE WE ARE THE REGIONAL DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF.

AND SO, ALL OF THESE STUDENTS, INCLUDING MY OWN CHILD, HAS NOW, LEARNED SIGN LANGUAGE TO BE ABLE TO TALK WITH THEIR PEERS IN THE CLASSROOM.

BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE LEARNED VERY EARLY AFTER HE WAS BORN WAS THE VALUE OF DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS AND THE VALUE OF LANGUAGE, WHETHER IT IS SPOKEN LANGUAGE OR WHETHER IT'S ASL.

AND SO, WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF ASL IN OUR, IN OUR FAMILY, AND OUR SON GOES BACK AND FORTH WHETHER HE, HE WANTS TO LEARN IT OR NOT.

BUT I THINK IT'S A PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE DATA ARE VERY CLEAR ON THIS, RIGHT? LEARNING MULTIPLE LANGUAGES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD IS A HUGE ADVANTAGE.

AND SO, I HOPE EVERYONE APPRECIATES AND UNDERSTANDS THAT.

AND THIS IS ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS THAT, YOU KNOW, COMBINED WITH OUR NOW OUR TWO-WAY DUAL LANGUAGE, PROGRAM, SPANISH PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE.

THIS IS ONE OF THE INSTANCES IN OUR DISTRICT WHERE YOU CAN GET THAT EARLY CHILDHOOD DUAL LANGUAGE, TYPE OF EXPOSURE.

AND IT IS IT IS SUCH A VALUABLE BENEFIT TO YOUR, TO YOUR CHILDREN GROWING UP.

1800 FOOD BACKPACKS WERE DISTRIBUTED DURING THE FALL SEMESTER.

1300 STUDENTS, RECEIVED SOME KIND OF SERVICES THROUGH THE RISING UP PROGRAM.

700 HOURS OF MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTION WERE RECEIVED BY OUR STUDENTS.

AND THEY'RE WORKING ON COMING UP WITH A VIRTUAL MENTAL HEALTH LIBRARY.

AND SO THIS CAMPUS HAD IDENTIFIED A VERY AFFORDABLE ALARM CLOCK ON AMAZON, AND A PHILANTHROPIST IN THE COMMUNITY WAS AGREED TO SUPPORT AND PAY FOR THAT. AND EVIDENTLY IT'S TURNED AROUND A CAMPUS VERY QUICKLY BECAUSE SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS AN ALARM CLOCK.

YES. SO SO ANYWAY, THOSE ARE A LITTLE FUN FACT, AND I MIGHT HAVE MISSPOKE A LITTLE BIT.

THAT'S NOT TO SAY THAT OUR SENIOR HIGH'S HAVE A BETTER ATTENDANCE RATE THAN OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, BECAUSE THAT'S NOT THE CASE.

BUT EARLY CHILDHOOD, BY FAR THE WORST ATTENDANCE RATES.

IT IS ELEMENTARY.

SOME DO BETTER THAN OTHERS.

AND THEN MIDDLE SCHOOL, SOME DO BETTER THAN OTHERS.

AND THEN HIGH SCHOOLS ARE WHERE HIGH SCHOOLS ALWAYS HAVE BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE ACROSS THE WORLD, THEY STRUGGLE.

SO, BUT, IT'S A CHALLENGE.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT WE, WE'RE BRINGING TO THE ATTENTION OF OUR CAMPUSES.

IT'S THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME THAT THEY'VE EVER HAD AN THEY'VE EVER HAD AN ATTENDANCE GOAL.

AND EVERYBODY HAS THE SAME GOAL OF 96%.

AND SO WE WORK WITH THEM ON THAT EVERY NINE WEEKS.

I'M ALWAYS TEMPTED TO SAY SIX WEEKS, NINE WEEKS.

AND SO IT'S SOMETHING THIS IS OUR FIRST YEAR GETTING AFTER THAT GOAL.

AND SO WE'LL SEE WHERE WE END UP AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
