AND SO I WANTED HER TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT WITH SOME OF THE GREAT THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON AT CARPENTER THAT SHE IS INVOLVED IN.

HI, MY NAME IS WINONA LOMAX, AND I AM INVOLVED IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES AT CARPENTER MIDDLE SCHOOL.

I AM AN ATHLETE. I AM A TUBA PLAYER FOR OUR WIND ENSEMBLE CARPENTER BAND.

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR ALL OF THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT I GET FROM CARPENTER MIDDLE SCHOOL.

WINONA, WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE, AND YOU'RE A SUPERSTAR AND YOU'RE ALSO AN AMAZING SPEAKER.

WE ARE VERY PROUD TO CELEBRATE THEM ALL.

2024-2025 TEXAS THESPIAN STATE OFFICER PLANO WEST JUNIOR AVA SCHELIN WAS ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK AS A NEWLY ELECTED STATE OFFICER FOR TEXAS THESPIANS, OUR STATE CHAPTER OF INTERNATIONAL THESPIAN SOCIETY.

IN THIS PRESTIGIOUS POSITION, WHICH IS ONLY ONE OF 12 ACROSS OUR STATE, AVA WILL SERVE AS A LEADER AND AN ADVOCATE FOR ALL HIGH SCHOOL THESPIANS.

CONGRATULATIONS TO AVA.

WE ALSO HAVE THE 24, 25, 2024, 2025 TEXAS THESPIAN NATIONAL QUALIFIERS.

SCHOOLS ACROSS THE STATE COMPETED AT THE TEXAS THESPIAN STATE FESTIVAL ON NOVEMBER 17TH AND 18TH IN GRAPEVINE.

THE PLANO WEST THEATER TROUPE HAD 13 NATIONAL QUALIFIERS NAMED IN THEIR GROUP.

PLEASE JOIN US IN CONGRATULATING IN SOLO MUSICAL LAURA GIVENS, JACK KERSTEIN, ADDY ROSENTHAL AND JADA [INAUDIBLE].

IN DUET ACTING, WE HAVE CALEB WRIGHT, SHILOH WILSON, ALICE ZINDLER, AND KENNEDY MCGUIRE.

ADDITIONAL RECOGNITION GOES TO LAURA GIVENS FOR A PERFECT SCORE ON HER THESPIAN INDIVIDUAL EVENT, SOLO MUSICAL AND SPECIAL PERFORMANCE AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY.

THE COLLEGE BOARD 2023 ADVANCED PLACEMENT HONOR ROLL LIST WAS RECENTLY PUBLISHED, AND PLANO ISD IS WELL REPRESENTED.

ALL THREE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS PLANO EAST, PLANO SENIOR, AND PLANO WEST MADE THIS YEAR'S HONOR ROLL, WHICH CONSISTS OF OVER 4500 ELIGIBLE HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA.

ALTHOUGH ONLY SENIOR HIGHS ARE ELIGIBLE.

AP PARTICIPATION ACROSS ALL FOUR GRADES IS PART OF THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, SO THE SUPPORT OF THEIR FEEDER HIGH SCHOOLS IS ESSENTIAL IN ACHIEVING THIS DISTINCTION.

IN FACT, THE WOLFPACK TENNIS TEAM HAS WON 24 STRAIGHT DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS, WHICH IS REALLY ASTONISHING.

SO YOU KNOW WHO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, COACH WALROND, DOWN HERE AT THE END, GREG WALROND, COACH HELEN DAVIDSON.

I DON'T THERE SHE IS RIGHT DOWN THERE, COACH BRAD ARMOR RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF US AND COACH MORGAN WALKER.

AND OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS OUR VERY TALENTED TENNIS TEAM.

I'M GOING TO JUST TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS YEAR.

THIS YEAR THEY WENT 21 AND THREE OVERALL AS A TEAM.

THEY WERE THE 6A DISTRICT CHAMPIONS.

UH, THEY WON BY DISTRICT OVER DENTON GUYER AT A SCORE OF 10 TO 1.

THEY WERE THEY WON THE AREA ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS BY DEFEATING LAKE HIGHLANDS 10 TO 0.

THEY WON THE REGIONAL QUARTERFINAL ROUND, DEFEATING ALLEN 10 TO 7, IN A GREAT MATCH, WENT ON TO BEAT IN THE REGIONAL SEMIFINALS.

THEY BEAT EL PASO FRANKLIN 10 TO 3, AND THEN THE REGIONAL FINALS, THEY DEFEATED SOUTHLAKE CARROLL 10 TO 5.

AND THEN THAT GOT THEM TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND, PRETTY SPECIAL.

YOU HAVE FOUR TEAMS AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT.

THEY PLAYED IN WACO THIS YEAR AT BAYLOR UNIVERSITY AND GOT TO GO DOWN THERE AND WATCH THEM PLAY AND THEY LOST TO HOUSTON MEMORIAL THREE, 10 TO 3, UH, IN A HARD FOUGHT MATCH.

BUT YOU KNOW, FINISHING IN THE TOP FOUR.

QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT, LET ME JUST, YOU KNOW, TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS GROUP AMAZING TENNIS PLAYERS, OBVIOUSLY, FOR GETTING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND GETTING A MEDAL. WHICH, THIS TEAM DID BUT EXTREMELY GREAT STUDENTS.

I MEAN, THEY MAKE THEY'RE SO TALENTED IN THE CLASSROOM.

THEY'RE GREAT HUMAN BEINGS.

THIS IS A GREAT GROUP.

THEY DO A GREAT JOB AND REPRESENT PLANO WEST AND PLANO ISD, SO VERY WELL.

LET ME SAY THIS TOO, I KNOW WE GOT SOME PARENTS, A LOT OF PARENTS IN THE ROOM TONIGHT AND JUST WANT TO THANK YOU, PARENTS, YOU'VE DONE A WONDERFUL JOB RAISING THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THEM.

BUT THIS PARTICULAR SHIRT, THE ONLY TIME THESE KIDS GET TO WEAR THIS PARTICULAR SHIRT IS IF THEY ARE PLAYING IN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN TEAM TENNIS IN THE FALL. NO OTHER POINT DURING THE FALL SEASON IS THIS SHIRT EVER PULLED OUT OF THE CLOSET.

IT'S SAVED BECAUSE IT'S A SPECIAL SHIRT.

IN THE SPRING.

THEY CAN WEAR IT A LITTLE MORE OFTEN, BUT AS FAR AS TEAM TENNIS IN THE FALL, THEY KNOW THAT IF THEY WANT TO WEAR THIS SHIRT, THEY'VE GOT TO GET TO THE STATE FINALS.

AND SO IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF DANGLING THE CARROT IN FRONT OF THE NOSE KIND OF THING.

BUT WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO WEAR THIS SHIRT A LOT OVER THE YEARS.

SO IT'S BEEN A LOT OF FUN AND JUST IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO THEM.

IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT, YOU KNOW, EVERY PROGRAM, YOU'VE GOT SOME GOALS THAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE, YOU'VE GOT SOME MOTIVATION THAT YOU WANT TO USE.

AND THIS IS ONE OF THE ONES WE DO.

THERE YOU GO. I KNOW THIS IS KIND OF HARD FOR YOU ALL TO SEE THERE, BUT THERE'S A PURPLE PATCH THAT'S ON EVERY ONE OF OUR SHIRTS, AND IT WAS PROBABLY ABOUT, GOSH, ABOUT 14 YEARS AGO, I HAD A MEMBER OF MY TENNIS TEAM WHOSE FATHER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PANCREATIC CANCER.

AND FOR THOSE OF Y'ALL THAT HAVE ANY KIND OF AWARENESS OF THAT, USUALLY WHEN THAT DIAGNOSIS IS MADE, IT'S KIND OF LATE.

VERY OFTEN IT'S STAGE THREE, STAGE FOUR, AND IT'S USUALLY A DEATH SENTENCE.

AND SO THIS YOUNG MAN WAS A FRESHMAN ON MY TEAM WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

AND HE HAPPENED TO BE AN ONLY CHILD AS WELL.

AND SO I GOT TOGETHER WITH A COUPLE OTHER PEOPLE THAT I KNEW, AND WE WERE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE COULD BEST SUPPORT THE FAMILY, AND SO WE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK OUT IN LOS ANGELES, AND I KIND OF TOLD THEM THE STORY AND ASKED THEM IF WE COULD USE THEIR LOGO ON ALL OF OUR T SHIRTS AND IF WE COULD SELL PURPLE SHIRTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AND SO PURPLE IS THE COLOR FOR PANCREATIC CANCER, IF YOU WEREN'T AWARE, AND THEY WERE MORE THAN HAPPY TO LET US DO THAT.

AND TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO FIRST ADDRESS THE MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS IN PHYSICS.

PHYSICS INCLUDES MATHEMATICAL MODELS BEING USED TO DESCRIBE AND PREDICT PHYSICAL PHENOMENA, AND SO COMPLETING A PHYSICS COURSE NOT ONLY ENHANCES THE STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING OF MATH, BUT ALSO ALLOWS THEM TO APPLY IN A REAL WORLD CONTEXT.

AND I KNOW THAT WHILE PISD HAS BEEN REMARKABLE IN STEM WITH ITS MANY TEAMS, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING ABOUT THE ATTENTION OF RECENT CHANGES TO THE PHYSICS CURRICULUM.

SO THE DIVISION OF AP PHYSICS INTO AP ONE, AP TWO, AND AP PHYSICS C REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT REFORM.

IN ADDITION, JASPER STUDENTS NO LONGER HAVE THE ABILITY TO SIGN UP FOR AP BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY OR PHYSICS AND WE'LL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE 11TH GRADE YEAR TO ENROLL, WHICH I FEEL WILL REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THEIR WORKLOAD ONCE THEY REACH 11 AND 12.

AND THIS IS VERY DETRIMENTAL BECAUSE THEY WILL BE BUSY PREPARING FOR SAT AND ACT AND COLLEGE APPLICATIONS.

DON'T FORGET THAT.

AND FROM THE EXPERIENCES OF MY PEERS IN TRAINING CLUBS WHO DEDICATED SUBSTANTIAL TIME TO ESSAYS, DOUBLING UP ON AP SCIENCE COURSES WHILE MANAGING COLLEGE APPLICATIONS CREATES A ADDITIONAL LAYER OF STRESS AND TIME COMMITMENTS.

SO I AM REACHING OUT TO YOU TO RECONSIDER AND REINSTATE THE CHOICE FOR STUDENTS TO BEGIN AP PHYSICS, BIOLOGY OR CHEMISTRY IN THE 10TH GRADE.

WHILE I ACKNOWLEDGE CONCERNS ABOUT THE WORKLOAD AND SKIPPING CLASSES COMPELLING STUDENTS TO CHOOSE FROM, A LIMITED SET OF SCIENCE SUBJECTS MAY NOT ALIGN WITH THE INTERESTS OF MANY STUDENTS, AND STUDENTS IN JASPER ARE DEDICATED TO EXCELLING IN EVERY CLASS THEY ARE IN, SO WHY NOT GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRANCH OUT AND TAKE CLASSES THEY ARE INTERESTED AND PASSIONATE ABOUT? SO IN CONCLUSION, I URGE YOU ALL OF THE PISD SCHOOL BOARD TO RECONSIDER THE CURRENT LIMITATIONS AND PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE THEIR PREFERRED SCIENCE SUBJECTS WITH THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE THEIR PREFERRED SCIENCE SUBJECTS IN THE 10TH GRADE.

THIS ADJUSTMENT WILL NOT ONLY CATER TO THE DIVERSE INTERESTS AND THE DIVERSE INTERESTS OF STUDENTS, BUT ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO A MORE FULFILLING AND BALANCED ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.

MEET YOU AGAIN, THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT A MATH PATHWAY, AND I AM PERSONALLY APPRECIATE EVERYTHING PISD HAVE DONE TO OUR KIDS.

AND THE FACTS OF OUR KIDS EXCELLED BOTH IN ACADEMIC AND, YOU KNOW, PROFESSIONAL CAREER CHOICE PROVES PISD IS REFORM IS EFFECTIVE.

HOWEVER, DURING OUR REVISION OF OUR CLASS SELECTION, ESPECIALLY WITH MATH AND SCIENCE.

RIGHT. WHEN YOU DESIGN THE MATH, I DO SEE THAT PISD WANT TO INCLUSIVELY AND BUILD A SOLID PATH FOR EVERY STUDENTS, BUT THIS ALSO PAVE A WAY FOR A PRE REQUEST FOR THE OTHER SCIENCE CLASS.

FOR EXAMPLE, IN AP PHYSICS ONE, THE PRE REQUEST FROM COLLEGE BOARD ONLY REQUIRES ALGEBRA TWO, WHERE JASPER STUDENTS TO WILLIAM'S POINT 50% ABOVE.

OF THE STUDENTS IN JASPER ALREADY PASSED ALGEBRA TWO, SOME OF THEM, MAYBE 30% OF THEM, ARE ALREADY IN THE PRE-CALCULUS, 20% OF THEM ARE, 10% OF THEM ARE ALREADY IN CALCULUS BC.

THEREFORE, IN 10TH GRADE THEY DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE TO GO TO WEST TO PICK UP AP SCIENCE.

THEY ARE STUCK IN 10TH GRADE WHERE THERE'S ONLY BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, BUT THERE'S NO PHYSICS.

BUT AFTER THE REFORM, WITH THE MATH AS A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR ALL THESE KIDS, FOR THEIR SCIENCE, DON'T FORGET ABOUT, UH, ABOUT THE PHYSICS.

YOU HAVE TO TAKE THREE STEPS OF PHYSICS IN THREE YEARS.

IF YOU TAKE PHYSICS C IN THE AP, IN THE IN THE 12TH GRADE, THAT PUSH YOU, YOU HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING IN 10TH GRADE.

SO I THINK WHEN WE DESIGN THE REFORM THERE'S SOMETHING MISSED OVER THERE.

THEREFORE IN 11TH AND 12TH THEY WILL BE OVERBURDENED TOGETHER.

YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT OTHER OTHER ISD FRISCO AND ALLEN HAS AND PROSPER EVEN HAS NO LIMIT ON AP.

ONE, OUR KIDS FACE THE COMPETITION FROM OTHER ISD'S.

NO MATTER HOW GOOD OUR MATH IS, OUR SCIENCE AP CLASS IS VERY IMPORTANT COMPONENT AND THEY WILL PUT IN THE DISADVANTAGE.

AND BECAUSE OF THIS MISCALCULATION, MAYBE.

SO I WOULD LIKE TO URGE THE BOARDMEMBER RECONSIDER THE DESIGN OF THE AP PHYSICS AND MAYBE IN LINE WITH MATH PATH, PROVIDE A MORE SOLID WAY AND BALANCED WAY FOR 10TH GRADERS ACROSS PISD AND THE REVISIT THE AP PHYSICS ONE PRE-REQUEST.

WE CANNOT IN ANY WAY FIGHT AGAINST COLLEGE BOARD REQUIREMENT.

THEY ONLY REQUIRE ALGEBRA TWO AND WE ADD A BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY ON TOP OF IT, WHICH IS, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE BIT MAYBE A TYPO RIGHT.

BUT THAT IS A LITTLE BIT CONFLICTING WITH EACH OTHER AND MAKE US LOOK, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE BIT UNPROFESSIONAL IN FRONT OF THE COLLEGE BOARD.

I'M COMING HERE TO SPEAK FOR THE, STUDENTS WHO ALSO HAVE TALENT IN MATHEMATICS, BECAUSE MANY OF THE STUDENTS WILL PURSUE THEIR SCIENCE IN THEIR FUTURE CAREERS.

SO THERE WILL BE VERY INTERESTED IN TAKING THE SCIENCE BASICS CLASSES IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS 1&2.

OKAY, HERE IS A PROBLEM MATHEMATICS.

THE PROGRAM IS PRETTY STANDARD STANDARDIZED AND THE SEQUENCE IS VERY LOGICAL.

OKAY. YOU HAVE PRE-ALGEBRA, ALGEBRA ONE, GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA TWO AND THEN MOVE ON TO THE CALCULUS A, B AND C AND AB AND CD.

BUT RIGHT NOW WE FEEL SOME OF OUR PARENTS FEEL THE PATHWAY OF THE SCIENCE PROGRAM IS NOT THAT LOGICAL RIGHT NOW.

WHAT HAPPENED IS FOR THOSE JUNIOR STUDENTS, NINTH GRADE AND 10TH GRADE STUDENTS, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE ANY AP CLASSES, ANY ONE OF THEM. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS ONE AND TWO, NONE OF THEM.

THE ONLY AP CLASSES THEY CAN TAKE IN SCIENCE FIELD IS AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE.

THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE AND IT'S NOT LOGICAL.

THE WHOLE PATHWAY, IT'S NOT LOGICAL.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IS GETTING IN THE WAY OF HAVING THOSE FOUNDATION BUILD UP IN BASIC SCIENCE FIELD.

THAT HAS TO BE PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY.

AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IS APPLIED SCIENCE.

IT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN MAYBE IN THE COLLEGE THAT WILL BE USEFUL FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS TO APPRECIATE AND, UH, TO UNDERSTAND AND APPLIED.

THIS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CONCEPT IS TOO EARLY.

AND I WOULD PUT IT THIS WAY.

IT'S A WASTE OF TIME FOR THE WHOLE YEAR.

IT'S A PRECIOUS TIME TAKEN AWAY FROM THOSE JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS FOR THE 10TH GRADE AND SO I REALLY HOPE THAT THE DISTRICT CAN RECONSIDER THE PATH, THE PROGRAM FOR THE SCIENCE PROGRAM, BECAUSE WE NEED THOSE STUDENTS TO EXCELLENT IN THEIR SCIENCE EDUCATION

REMEMBER YOUR SCIENCE FAIR STARTING IN SEVENTH GRADE, SEVENTH GRADE, THAT'S IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND EVEN IN JUNIOR SCHOOL.

IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, YOU DON'T HAVE ANY AP CLASSES FOR THE STUDENTS, AND YOU EXPECT THEM TO WIN THOSE SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT IN INTERNATIONAL, IN NATIONAL. THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE RIGHT NOW LOOKING AT THOSE TOPICS OF SCIENCE FAIR? THEY ARE VERY ADVANCED.

EVEN I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND THE TITLES OF THOSE SCIENCE PROJECTS.

THEN YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW ADVANCED SOME OF THOSE SCIENCE STUDENTS ARE DOING.

WE NEED TO OFFER OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO ARE TALENTED, WHO HAVE INTEREST, WHO HAVE PASSION FOR SCIENCE AND FOR MATHEMATICS.

TWO WAY DUAL LANGUAGE IS A VERY SIMILAR PROGRAM IN THE SENSE THAT IT'S TEACHING BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH TO OUR STUDENTS, WITH THE DIFFERENCE BEING THAT HALF OF THE CLASS IS MADE OF STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY AS AN EMERGENT BILINGUAL, WHILE THE OTHER HALF OF THE CLASS IS NON-EMERGENT BILINGUALS WHO ARE LEARNING THE OTHER LANGUAGE. SO AGAIN, THERE'S A LOT MORE IN THE DEFINITION I OFFERED ON YOUR HANDOUT, BUT THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR PROGRAMS. OKAY.

WITH CURRENTLY THE HIGHEST ENROLLMENT WE'VE SEEN OF EMERGENT BILINGUALS IN PLANO ISD.

OKAY. WE, I EXPLAINED SOME OF THOSE PROGRAMS, BUT I ALSO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT AS WE SERVE OUR STUDENTS, WE DO A LOT IN TERMS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR TEACHERS, CREATING CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION SUPPORTS FOR BOTH ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS, AND THEN BOTH DISTRICT LEVEL STAFF AND CAMPUS LEVEL STAFF THAT CAN MODEL, COACH AND HELP COLLABORATE WITH THE TEACHERS TO FEEL SUCCESSFUL AND BE ABLE TO HELP STUDENTS ACCESS OUR CURRICULUM.

SO WE HAVE EVEN GREATER THAN 90.

BUT IT REALLY DOES HIGHLIGHT THE DIVERSITY IN OUR DISTRICT.

SO WHEN I TALK ABOUT GROWTH IT THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED ANY TIME BETWEEN 2018 AND 2023.

SO I'M GOING TO START WITH THE READING LANGUAGE ARTS STAAR RESULTS AND THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.

OVER THAT TIME PERIOD THAT I JUST MENTIONED OF 2018 TO 2023, WE SAW GROWTH ON THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE, ANYWHERE FROM 13 TO 18%.

AND THEN WHEN WE LOOK AT OUR BILINGUAL STUDENT GROUP FOR THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE, WE SAW GROWTH FROM ANYWHERE TO 18 TO 40% AND 2% DIFFERENCE AMONG ALL STUDENT GROUP AND BILINGUAL STUDENT GROUP.

AND I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT HERE, AS I TALKED ABOUT OUR DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, LAST YEAR WAS OUR FIRST YEAR THAT WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE A STAAR TESTING GRADE WHERE OUR

SO THE CHARGE FOR THE COMMITTEE WAS TO RESEARCH AND DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THAT REDESIGN OF K-12 MATHEMATICS PATHWAYS, TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE AREN'T ANY BARRIERS, OR FOR ACCESSIBILITY TO RIGOROUS COURSEWORK AND HIGH LEVELS OF LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS.

SO NOT ALL STUDENTS ARE ACCESSING RIGOROUS COURSEWORK, AND NOT ALL STUDENTS ARE MEETING THEIR GOALS FOR HIGH LEVELS OF SUCCESS IN MATH.

AND SO THAT'S A REALITY.

AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, WE ARE NOT PUTTING ANY BARRIERS IN PLACE TO THAT.

SO WE PUT TOGETHER A WORK GROUP TO HELP US DISCOVER WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN DO BETTER AND HOW WE STRUCTURE OUR PATHWAYS FOR STUDENTS AND WHAT OUR MATH INSTRUCTION LOOKS LIKE IN

IT'S MADE UP OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY FOLKS, DEPARTMENT FOLKS, FROM A VARIETY OF DEPARTMENTS.

WE HAVE A COUPLE OF MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS IN THERE, SENIOR HIGH, SEVERAL ELEMENTARY.

UM, AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THE DEPARTMENTS AS WELL.

WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS.

THIS WAS BY INTEREST.

THESE ARE CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS THAT SPOKE UP AND SAID, I WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS AND THEY HAD THEY WERE ABLE TO HAVE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD CHOICE.

SO WE TRIED REALLY HARD TO PULL THOSE IN THAT, HAD THOSE FIRST AND SECOND CHOICES TO SERVE ON THIS COMMITTEE.

WE ALSO WANT TO ADD SOME CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS THAT ARE FROM A NON MATH ROCKS CAMPUS.

WE THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT.

SO BEFORE WE MEET AGAIN ON JANUARY 18TH WE'RE GOING TO ADD THOSE TO THIS WORKGROUP.

BECAUSE WE ALSO FEEL LIKE THAT THEIR VOICE NEEDS TO BE HEARD.

SO FIRST MEETING WE HAD WAS NOVEMBER 28TH.

WE ESTABLISHED THE CHARGE FOR THE GROUP.

WE REALLY HAD A GOOD TIME DIGGING INTO THE RESEARCH, WE PULLED IN QUITE A BIT OF RESEARCH.

LISA HAD HAD ACCESS TO HANOVER RESEARCH.

WE, SHE HAD A HUGE BINDER.

WE SHARED QUITE A BIT OF THE ARTICLES WITH THEM ELECTRONICALLY DIVIDED UP.

HAD A PROTOCOL TO WORK THROUGH THAT WITH THEM.

I THINK THEY REALLY ENJOYED WHAT THEY READ AND READ AND WHAT THEY RESEARCHED, THEN WE BEGAN TO BRAINSTORM SOME DATA AND INFORMATION WE FELT LIKE WE NEEDED TO GATHER TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORK, SO THAT WAS A PART OF THAT MEETING AS WELL.

UM, WE KNOW WE NEED TO ESTABLISH A FULL PICTURE OF WHAT OUR PATHWAYS LOOK LIKE, BUT WE DON'T WANT TO ASSUME THAT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME ACCESS.

SO THAT'S A BIG PART OF THIS WORK.

FOR EXAMPLE, THIS YEAR WE'VE BEEN VERY FOCUSED ON FINDING STUDENTS WHO SHOULD BE IN A HIGHER LEVEL MATH, BUT ARE NOT CHOOSING THIS ON THEIR OWN.

THE STATE ACTUALLY EXCUSE ME, HAS SAID THIS YEAR WE MUST DO THAT AS A DISTRICT.

WE STARTED THAT WORK LAST YEAR, SO WE'RE A LITTLE BIT AHEAD OF THE GAME, BUT THIS IS NOT ENOUGH.

WE KNOW WE NEED TO MAKE SURE OUR SYSTEM SUPPORTS ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITIES TO ACCESS HIGHER LEVEL COURSES.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS OUR IDENTIFICATION PROCESS.

IS IT REALLY ADEQUATE TO CAPTURE ALL OF THE STUDENTS WHO NEED TO BE IN MORE CHALLENGING COURSES? AND THEN WHAT DOES OUR TIER ONE MATH INSTRUCTION LOOK LIKE IN ALL GRADES TO SUPPORT MOVING OUR KIDS INTO HIGHER LEVEL MATH? SO WE HAVE TO ASK HARD QUESTIONS OF OURSELVES.

AND JUST BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN DOING IT THIS WAY FOR A VERY LONG TIME, DOES IT MEAN WE DO NOT HAVE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS? SO THE NEXT MEETING, WE'RE GOING TO ESTABLISH CURRENT PRACTICES IN PLANO ISD AND REMOVE ANY ASSUMPTIONS OR MISINFORMATION.

WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A VERY CLOSE LOOK FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE.

WHAT IS THE WHAT ARE THOSE MATH PATHWAYS AND OPPORTUNITIES LOOK LIKE CURRENTLY? THEN WE'RE GOING TO IDENTIFY ANY BARRIERS, OR ANY PROBLEMS THAT WE MAY NEED TO ADDRESS IN OUR SYSTEM ESTABLISH DISTRICT AND PROGRAMS TO VISIT OR RESEARCH.

WELL, WHAT ARE WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SURROUNDING DISTRICTS, AND OTHER PLACES? WHAT ARE THEY DOING INNOVATIVELY IN MAKING SURE THAT THEY'RE REMOVING BARRIERS FOR STUDENTS? AND THEN BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, WE'RE GOING TO BRING SOME RECOMMENDATIONS FORWARD FROM THE COMMITTEE.

THAT'S REALLY IT JUST KIND OF UPDATING YOU ON WHERE WE ARE WITH THE WORK AND HAPPY TO FIELD ANY QUESTIONS.

UH, JUPITER CENTER RENOVATION, FUTURE HOME TO THE DISTRICT'S TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYMENT AND LEARNING MEDIA SERVICES, THE PROJECT MET A MINOR SCHEDULE DELAY IN DELIVERY OF THE SWITCHGEAR, WHICH ARRIVED MID NOVEMBER, AND HVAC EQUIPMENT, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE LATER THIS MONTH, THE PROJECT IS NOW ANTICIPATING AN END OF JANUARY EARLY FEBRUARY COMPLETION, AS YOU CAN SEE, THE NEW INTERIOR OFFICE WALLS ARE UP AND PAINTED.

CEILING GRID IS COMPLETE WITH LIGHT FIXTURES.

THE BATHROOMS ARE TILED WITH FIXTURES AND TOILET PARTITIONS ARE INSTALLED.

SO IT IS MOVING FORWARD.

THE MURPHY DISTRIBUTION CENTER EDITION HAS CMU WALLS UP THE STRUCTURAL STEEL IS IN PLACE AND RECENTLY COMPLETED THE METAL DECK, ROOFING STARTED THIS WEEK. THE PROJECT, LIKE JUPITER, HAS ALSO EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT SHIFT IN SCHEDULE, WITH THE ADDITION EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETE AND READY TO MOVE INTO IN LATE JANUARY.

BUT WITH THE HVAC COMPLETION TRAILING DUE TO LONG LEAD TIMES ON THE EQUIPMENT.

COMPLETION OF THE HVAC IS ANTICIPATED FOR APRIL THE WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL PHASE TWO RENOVATION.

THE CONTRACTOR OPENED SUB BIDS LAST WEEK, AND WE ARE ON TARGET TO REVIEW THOSE AND HAVE A GMP, A GUARANTEED MAX PRICE RECOMMENDED TO THE BOARD FOR JANUARY 16TH APPROVAL.

UPON THAT BOARD APPROVAL IN JANUARY, WE'LL START CONSTRUCTION IN FEBRUARY AND WILL BE IN A MULTI PHASE PROJECT UNTIL COMPLETION, JULY 2026.

THE CONTRACTOR CURRENTLY HAS IT'S SPLIT INTO 11 PHASES.

THE GMP WILL INCLUDE AN ALLOWANCE TO RENOVATE THE HARRY RAWLINSON NATATORIUM NEXT TO WILLIAMS. THE DISTRICT WILL TAKE OWNERSHIP OF WHEN THE CITY'S FIVE YEAR EXTENSION OF THEIR 50 YEAR LEASE EXPIRES JANUARY 4TH, 2025, THE POOL, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, IS 25 YARDS AND HAS SIX LANES WITH A BUMP OUT FOR PRACTICE.

CONSTRUCTION INFLATION IS RUNNING ABOUT 6 TO 8%.

DURING COVID, IT SPIKED ALL THE WAY UP TO ABOUT 18%.

SO IF YOU WAIT AND MAKE THAT DECISION, THEN YOU LOSE.

OUT OF $100 MILLION PROJECT, YOU LOSE 10 TO $12 MILLION OF BUYING POWER.

AND SO IT'S AN ECONOMIC DECISION.

WE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE LAND THAT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR DISTRICT, WHICH OBVIOUSLY THE CTE WILL BE USED BY ALL OF THE STUDENTS, WHETHER THEY'RE ON THE EAST OR THE WEST SIDE.

SO IT WAS ECONOMICAL.

IT WAS A GOOD DECISION FOR THE DISTRICT.

AS A RESULT, WE HAD A REALLY LARGE ISSUANCE THAT WE DID IN THIS LAST JANUARY, AND WE SOLD A LITTLE UNDER $700 MILLION THAT WOULD GET US THROUGH ABOUT TWO AND A HALF YEARS OF THOSE PROJECTS, THOSE LARGE PROJECTS.

WE ANTICIPATE SELLING A SECOND PHASE IN JANUARY OF 25.

I DO WANT TO POINT OUT, BECAUSE, UH, IN 30 YEARS OF DOING THIS, IT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT IT LOOKS LIKE THAT WE MIGHT BE IN AN ARBITRAGE SITUATION, WHICH SIMPLY MEANS THAT WE'RE EARNING, ARBITRAGE JUST SIMPLY MEANS YOU'VE GOT TO PAY THE IRS IF YOU CAN'T ACTUALLY MAKE MORE MONEY THAN WHAT YOU'RE PAYING IN INTEREST ON YOUR BONDS.

WE PARENTS ASK THAT YOU STOP BUILDING THIS WRAPAROUND PROGRAM AND INSTEAD REDRAW THE SCHOOL BOUNDARIES AND USE THE MONEY TO KEEP OUR SCHOOLS OPEN.

MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE DFW AREA ARE ANNOUNCING THEY WILL HAVE TO CLOSE CAMPUSES DUE TO FAMILIES PUTTING THEIR CHILDREN IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS AND HOME SCHOOLING.

PLANO ISD YOU ARE THE ONLY SCHOOL DISTRICT WHO TELLS A PARTIAL TRUTH EXPLAINING LOW ENROLLMENT.

YOU SAY IT IS BECAUSE NEIGHBORHOODS ARE AGING OUT AND HOMES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE.

BUT YOU AND I BOTH KNOW THAT PARENTS ARE ALSO PULLING THEIR KIDS OUT OF PLANO ISD TO HOME-SCHOOL.

THIS EMAIL WAS SENT AFTER A PARTICULARLY HEATED FORUM ON OPEN COMMENTS UNRELATED TO AGENDA ITEMS, NON AGENDA ITEMS THAT PERTAIN TO SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOKS MADE AVAILABLE FOR YOUNG STUDENTS OR YOUNG ADULT STUDENTS TO CHECK OUT AS THEY WISHED.

BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR YOUNG ADULT STUDENTS TO READ ON THEIR OWN VOLITION.

THEY HAD PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS WHO WERE EXCELLENT.

NOW MY GRANDKIDS ARE IN PISD AND I HAVE THE CONCERNS PRETTY MUCH TOWARDS THE LIBRARY TOO.

WE HAVE THREE KIDS WHO WENT THROUGH K THROUGH 12.

TWO GRANDKIDS AND TWO OF OUR KIDS, EXCUSE ME, ARE ALSO TEACHERS IN PISD.

AND ONE OF OUR CHILDREN IS ACTUALLY IN TAKING CLASSES TO BECOME A MASTER OF LIBRARY SCIENCES.

SO I ALSO DO TRUST THE LIBRARIANS, TO CHOOSE BOOKS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THE CHILDREN OF APPROPRIATE FOR THEIR AGE AND THEIR SCHOOL LEVEL, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY GO TO SCHOOL FOR.

AND IT IS VERY INTENSE CURRICULUM, WHICH I OBSERVE, YOU KNOW, THROUGH MY CHILD WHO IS IN THAT CLASS.

AND SO I TRUST THEM TO DO WHAT'S RIGHT BECAUSE THEY ARE HERE IN PLANO.

IT'S REALLY CLEAR THAT YOU'RE USING IT FOR STAAR FAILURES, BUT HB 1416 STRENGTHENED THE PARENTAL OPT OUT RIGHT THIS YEAR . I OPTED MY KID OUT OF THE ACCELERATED INSTRUCTION.

IT WAS IGNORED BY MY CAMPUS, WHAT I'VE GIVEN YOU IS A TEA RULING ABOUT PARENTAL RIGHTS AND ACCELERATED INSTRUCTION.

SO TONIGHT WE HEARD ABOUT HAGGARD MIDDLE SCHOOL STARTING THE RENOVATION IN OCTOBER OF 2024.

AND THAT'S A REALLY INTERESTING DECISION.

SEEING HOW AT A RECENT MEETING, WE HEARD THAT, ONLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO BE CONSIDERED, WHICH MEANS IT'S A FOREGONE CONCLUSION THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE REPLACED. THE REASON THOSE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE BEING CONSIDERED FOR CLOSURE IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE CAMPUS ENROLLMENT UNDER 65% OF THE CAMPUS CAPACITY.

WE HAVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.

OUR DEMOGRAPHER HAS PREDICTED THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A MORE SEVERE DECLINE IN ENROLLMENT THAN PROJECTED BEFORE.

NO EXPLANATION HAS BEEN GIVEN FOR THIS ACTION.

CONSIDERING ALL AVAILABLE INFORMATION.

THE DECISION TO REPLACE HAGGARD MIDDLE SCHOOL AND MAINTAIN FIVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN A CENTRAL CLUSTER IS A FOREGONE CONCLUSION, AND THIS IS A VIOLATION OF YOUR FIDUCIARY DUTY AND PUBLIC TRUST. THIS WILL RESULT IN BOND DOLLARS BEING UNNECESSARILY SPENT AND M&O DOLLARS BEING APPLIED, IN EFFECT, INEFFECTUALLY.

UH, THE PUBLIC DESERVES AN ANSWER.
