WE ARE HONORING OUR OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS TONIGHT BUT IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT IS TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK AND I SEARCHED REALLY HARD TO FIND SOMETHING THAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE MEANINGFUL AND APPROPRIATE FOR CELEBRATING THAT. AND I HAPPENED TO STUMBLE ACROSS SOMETHING THIS MORNING IN MY SOCIAL MEDIA AND I HAVE PERMISSION TO SHARE THIS. BRIAN THURMAN IS A HISTORY AND PACE TEACHER AT HAGGARD MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HE HAD A STUDENT WRITE TO HIM A PERSONAL NOTE THAT I THOUGHT SHOWED NOT ONLY THE FACT THAT WE HAVE EVERYDAY HEROES EVERY DAY IN OUR CLASSROOMS BUT IT ALSO SPEAKS TO THE BRILLIANCE OF OUR STUDENTS. THE INNOVATIONS IN STEM TEACHING AWARDS ARE MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FOUNDATION SO TO BEGIN OUR AWARDS PRESENTATION I INVITE TO THE PODIUM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FOUNDATION ANDY SMITH ALONG WITH WHITNEY EVANS OUR DISTRICT SECONDARY MATH COORDINATOR.  AT THAT TIME WE'VE GIVEN OUT ABOUT 1. OH THERE WE GO, IT'S OK. WE'VE GIVEN OUT 1.8 MILLION DOLLARS IN AWARDS TO TEACHERS IN PLANO ISD SPECIFICALLY INCLUDING THE THREE WHO WILL BE HONORED TONIGHT. WE HAVE AWARDED 33, RECOGNIZED 33 TEACHERS IN PLANO ISD AND WE DO THIS BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT A GOOD TEACHER IS PROBABLY THE BEST INFLUENCE ON A STUDENT WE JUST HEARD FROM OUR OUR THIRD GRADER HERE WHAT HER TEACHER IS DOING FOR  HER AND WE CAN THINK IN OUR OWN LIVES WHAT THAT ONE TEACHER DID FOR US THAT OR TWO TEACHERS PERHAPS WHO INSPIRED US TO REALLY GO FOR IT AND WE BELIEVE IN TEACHERS WE BELIEVE IN STEM TEACHERS AND WHAT THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH AND WHAT THEY ARE ACCOMPLISHING AND WE ARE SO DELIGHTED TO BE HERE TONIGHT TO HONOR THESE THREE

OUTSTANDING STEM TEACHERS WHO WILL BE RECEIVING THESE AWARDS. AND SO NOW WITHOUT FURTHER ADO. I WOULD LIKE TO HAND IT OVER TO WHITNEY EVANS OF PLANO ISD. I'M GOING TO NOW ANNOUNCE THE THREE FINALISTS FOR THE 2019 TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FOUNDATION INNOVATIONS IN STEM TEACHING AWARD. AS I ANNOUNCE THEIR NAMES THEY'RE GOING TO COME FORWARD AND BE RECOGNIZED. OUR FIRST FINALIST ISN'T HERE THIS EVENING BUT JANICE WILLIAMS, HIS  PRINCIPAL IS GOING TO ACCEPT THE AWARD ON HIS BEHALF. JERRY GRIZZLE TEACHES AT PLANO WEST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. MR. GRIZZLE IS ONE OF THE FEW ORIGINAL STAFF MEMBERS STILL TEACHING AT PLANO WEST IN ITS 20TH YEAR. JERRY'S KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS AND SCIENCE AND HIS HIGH EXPECTATIONS DEFINES HIS RELATABLE INSTRUCTIONAL STYLE MAKING  HIS STUDENTS VERY COMFORTABLE AND EAGER TO PARTICIPATE. ACCORDING TO JERRY'S PRINCIPAL LISA KERRIGAN, JERRY TRULY RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF PROVIDING A POSITIVE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS IN HIS CLASSROOM. HE IS A MASTER OF EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND HE INSTRUCTS TO CONNECT WITH HIS STUDENTS. JERRY IS A VITAL PART OF THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT AT PLANO WEST. SO IF YOU'LL JOIN ME IN HONORING JERRY. [APPLAUSE] OUR NEXT FINALIST IS MICHELE POOVEY FROM JASPER HIGH SCHOOL. MS. POOVEY DOES NOT COAST THROUGH HER LESSONS HER PREPARATION, ATTENTION TO DETAIL PERSONALITY AND WELL CRAFTED INSTRUCTIONAL SKILLS COME TOGETHER TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL MOSAIC OF LEARNER CENTERED INSTRUCTION. ACCORDING TO MICHELE'S PRINCIPAL MATT ENDSLEY MICHELE POOVEY IS A MOST DESERVING CANDIDATE FOR THIS AWARD. EVERY SINGLE TIME I WALK INTO HER ROOM I'M AMAZED AT THE HIGH LEVEL OF COLLABORATION, LEARNING AND FUN AND I MEAN EVERY SINGLE TIME. THAT'S SO MATT TO SAY THAT. WE COULD NOT BE MORE PROUD TO HAVE MICHELE REPRESENTING OUR CAMPUS AS A TI STEM AWARD FINALIST AND LOOK FORWARD TO HER CONTINUED LEADERSHIP AT JASPER HIGH SCHOOL. SO, THANK YOU MICHELE. [APPLAUSE] AND OUR LAST FINALIST IS MARK YODER FROM PLANO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. MR. YODER. HE'S NOT SURE IF HE SHOULD COME YET. MR. YODER BRINGS IN EXPERTS FROM THE COMMUNITY TO EDUCATE THE STUDENTS ABOUT NATIVE LANDSCAPING, WATER, SOILS AND CHEMICALS.

THEN THE STUDENTS BEGIN TO WORK ON THEIR DESIGNS, ULTIMATELY TURNING THEIR PROJECTS INTO A FORMAL PROPOSAL. WE GOT TO SEE ONE OF THOSE WHEN WE VISITED AND I WAS VERY EXCITED BECAUSE IT WAS ABOUT WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL COURTYARD. MARK HAS MADE SCIENCE REAL FOR HIS STUDENTS. THIS IS ACCORDING TO MARK'S PRINCIPAL SARAH WATKINS. HE HAS TAUGHT THEM SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS BUT HE ALSO HAS GIVEN THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO  APPLY THOSE CONCEPTS TO THE REAL WORLD. THEY LEAVE HIS CLASS WITH SKILLS THEY WILL USE FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. SO CONGRATULATIONS MARK. [APPLAUSE] AND NOW I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE THREE 2019 TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FOUNDATION'S INNOVATIONS IN STEM TEACHING AWARD WINNERS. THAT'S A MOUTHFUL AGAIN. EACH WINNER WILL RECEIVE TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS IN AWARDS. WINNERS  RECEIVE FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR PERSONAL CASH AWARD AND A FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR AWARD FOR THEIR SCHOOL TO GO TOWARD CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY OR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE TEAM UTILIZES VARIOUS PROGRAMS TO ORGANIZE AND DISAGGREGATE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT DATA AND THEY USE THIS DATA TO INFORM THEIR LESSON PLANNING OR TO DIAGNOSE AREAS THEY MAY NEED TO  REVISIT OR RETEACH. ACCORDING TO DANIEL'S PRINCIPAL JILL ENGELKING MR. ANAYA IS A LEADER ON OUR CAMPUS SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORT TEAM. HE IS OUR NORTH STAR WHEN IT COMES TO GROUNDING  DECISIONS IN DATA REMINDING US ALL TO CONSIDER SUPPORTING THE GOOD THAT STUDENTS DO EVERY DAY AS OPPOSED TO FOCUSING SOLELY ON THE ISSUES FOR THE NEGATIVE. ASIDE FROM THE GREAT ENERGY SHE PROVIDES HER CLASS WITH INSTRUCTION SHE ALSO ENJOYS BRINGING RESOURCES FROM OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM TO HELP SUPPLEMENT HER INSTRUCTION. WE GOT TO PLAY WITH SOME OF THOSE SNAILS THE DAY WE VISITED. WELL I DIDN'T TOUCH THEM. [LAUGHTER] ACCORDING TO REBECCA'S PRINCIPAL CHRIS GLASSCOCK, MRS. BOTTIN IS NOT ONLY A MASTER TEACHER WHO DESERVES FOR ALL OF HER STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WHO DESIRES SORRY FOR ALL OF HER STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL SHE ALSO AN INDIVIDUAL WHO CARES DEEPLY ABOUT OTHERS AND ONE YOU CAN DEPEND ON TO DO THE RIGHT THING AT ALL TIMES. THAT'S SO TRUE. SHE'S EAGER TO TAKE ON NEW CHALLENGES IN BOTH THE SCIENCE  DEPARTMENT AND AS A CAMPUS LEADER. SO CONGRATULATIONS REBECCA. [APPLAUSE] AND OUR FINAL WINNER IS ANOTHER REBECCA. REBECCA GRANT FROM HAGGARD MIDDLE SCHOOL. [APPLAUSE] MRS. GRANT EXEMPLIFIES EFFECTIVE MATH INSTRUCTION AND LEADS HER STUDENTS IN ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING THAT ARE EVERY BIT AS ENGAGING AS THEY ARE CHALLENGING. SHE IS A LEADER ACROSS THE DISTRICT IN CURRICULUM DESIGN CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND AN INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES. ACCORDING TO REBECCA'S PRINCIPAL SHAUNA  KOEHNE. I HAVE SUCH RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL JOB MRS. GRANT DOES FOR OUR CAMPUS, DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY. I ENJOY WORKING AS HER COLLEAGUE AND SUPERVISOR AND I FEEL SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE HER TALENT AND LEADERSHIP AT HAGGARD. SHE REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST DEDICATED TEACHERS ON OUR STAFF AND ALWAYS HAS HER STUDENT'S VERY BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. I COULDN'T AGREE MORE. GRIZZLE WAS ACTUALLY MY KID'S PHYSICS TEACHER AT WEST AND SO WE CERTAINLY IN A PERSONALLY APPRECIATED THE SERVICE IN TERMS OF MAKING SCIENCE COME ALIVE AND MAKING IT APPROACHABLE. SO I  THINK ALL OF OUR HARDWORKING SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS AND THAT SON IS GRADUATING SATURDAY WITH HIS ENGINEERING DEGREE. WELL SINCE YOU'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT FORMER TEACHERS OF OUR STUDENTS I GET TO TALK ABOUT MRS. GRANT AND MRS. GRANT WAS TRANSFORMATIONAL WITH MY SON AUSTIN IN MATH IN EIGHTH GRADE AND HE IS NOW  STUDYING CIVIL ENGINEERING AT WEST POINT. SO WE'RE DOING GREAT THINGS. WELL I'M GOING TO CHIME IN BECAUSE I CAN REMEMBER WHEN I TOOK ALGEBRA MRS. CORBELL AND THIS WAS IN A DIFFERENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NOT TOO FAR AWAY. AND YOU KNOW I ENDED UP BEING AN ACCOUNTANT SO SHE PROBABLY HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON MY LIFE AND WHERE I ENDED UP. AND I JUST KNOW THAT EVERY ONE OF THESE AMAZING TEACHERS HAS A RIPPLE EFFECT ON THEIR PEER TEACHERS. AND YOU'LL MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN THEM WATCHING YOU TEACH. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TOUCHING THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN.

IN THE ELECTION PROCESS YOU'RE TOLD LOTS OF THINGS ABOUT PEOPLE AND SHE HAD BEEN TOLD THINGS. YOU JUST DIDN'T LIKE ME. I DON'T KNOW. I'VE BEEN TOLD THINGS ABOUT MISSY AND WE DID NOT GET ALONG. I MET WITH DOLLIE OVER HERE WHO I SEE THAT'S YOU KNOW I DIDN'T KNOW ANYBODY. I WAS JUST MAKING PHONE CALLS AND THEN SOMEBODY WOULD MAKE AN INTRODUCTION TO SOMEBODY ELSE WHO'D  MAKE AN INTRODUCTION TO SOMEBODY ELSE ALONG THE WAY. AND I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT THE DISTRICT. WHAT I LEARNED ALONG THE WAY ALSO AS I WAS YOU KNOW DISCOVERING AND SO EXCITED ABOUT WHAT I WAS LEARNING, SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES FROM THE ORIGINAL BOARD ARE HERE TOO. SO I THINK DUNCAN IS HERE AND SKIP IS MARY BETH STILL HERE? THERE SHE IS OK IN THE BACK. I DON'T SEE BRAD OR MELODY. AND SO WHAT WE DID IS OUR WORK SORT OF FOCUSED AROUND GAP ANALYSIS TO BEGIN WITH BECAUSE IN ORDER TO KNOW WHERE WE WERE GOING, WHERE WE'RE GOING TO GO OR WHAT OUR NEEDS WERE WE HAD TO DETERMINE WHAT THE STRENGTHS AND NEEDS OF OUR PROGRAM WERE. SO WE WENT THROUGH THIS PROCESS AS A GROUP. WE IDENTIFIED SOME OF THE GAPS WE PRIORITIZED SOME OF THE  ACTION STEPS OR NEEDS, WE IDENTIFIED NEEDS IN THE WAY OF BARRIERS. WE HAD A GUEST SPEAKER COME IN AND DO A PRESENTATION. WE HAD SOME SUBCOMMITTEES DO SOME RESEARCH.

DYLAN AND LYNN REALLY PROVIDED THE GROUP WITH A GREAT DEAL OF RESEARCH THAT WAS REALLY INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING TO HELP US ARRIVE AT A DECISION ABOUT WHAT SOME OF OUR IMMEDIATE ACTIONS WERE. AND THEN WE ALSO CONDUCTED A PARENT SURVEY. SO THESE WERE IN A NUTSHELL. THE COMMITTEE IDENTIFIED PRIORITIES SO COMMUNICATION WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE FOUND THROUGH THE SURVEY AND THAT WE FOUND THROUGH OUR GAP ANALYSIS THAT WAS AN A NEED IN THE AREA OF SPECIAL EDUCATION. PARENT CONNECTIONS. HELPING PARENTS TO CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER. CONNECTING PARENTS TO TEACHERS. BUILDING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH THE CONNECTIONS AND THEN THE AVAILABILITY OF RESOURCES TO PARENTS AND HAVING ACCESS TO THOSE RESOURCES. SO THOSE WERE REALLY THE THREE PRIORITIES THAT SURFACED THROUGH THIS GAP ANALYSIS AND THROUGH OUR WORK. SO THE IMMEDIATE ACTION THE COMMITTEE TOOK WAS TO RESEARCH AND DESIGN A PISD PARENT AND STUDENT NAVIGATOR. SO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THE COMMITTEE DETERMINED WERE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THIS NAVIGATOR WAS THAT IT HAS SOME EMBEDDED RESOURCES. THESE ARE THREE OF THE RESOURCES BUT THERE ARE MANY MORE IS THAT  IT BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE THAT IT BE DIGITAL AND THAT IT BE FOCUSED ON NEEDS OF THE USER. AND WE ALSO CONDUCTED A PARENT SURVEY. SO CURRENTLY THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING NOW AND OVER THE SUMMER FOR NEXT YEAR'S ROLLOUT HOPEFULLY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR WILL BE THIS NAVIGATOR. AND SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT PROJECT. I WANTED TO GIVE YOU KIND OF A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF SOME OF THE RESULTS THAT PARENTS PROVIDED TO US. SO WE HAD FOUR HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR RESPONDENTS OUT OF A SIX THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN POSSIBLE FAMILIES. SO THAT WAS A 7.6 PERCENT RESPONSE RATE. AND WE DID PUBLISH THAT SURVEY BROADLY. SO AND IN SEVEN LANGUAGES. SO WE LISTED IT IN JUST ABOUT EVERY VENUE WE COULD THINK OF TO MAKE SURE THAT IT GOT OUT THERE FOR PARENTS. THERE WERE TWO AREAS OF STRENGTH THAT SURFACED THROUGH THAT SURVEY AND ONE WAS THAT PARENTS FELT LIKE THEY HAD AN ACTIVE ROLE IN DECISION MAKING WHICH WAS VERY POSITIVE. AND THAT THE DISTRICT WORKS  COLLABORATIVELY WITH PARENTS. SOME OF THE AREAS OF GREATEST OPPORTUNITY WERE PARENT TO PARENT CONNECTION AND COLLABORATION, ACCESS TO PARENT RESOURCES LIKE THE WEB SITE AND THEN AVAILABILITY OF PARENT RESOURCES. SO WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO IS TO RECOMMEND FOR NEXT YEART HE GOAL FOR THE BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION WOULD BE EXPLORE INNOVATIVE WAYS TO EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR FAMILIES THAT COMMUNICATE CONNECT AND LEARN. SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE IMPORTANT. I THINK IN THIS RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE TO EXPLORE THAT DISTRICT OF PARENT COMMUNICATION. THE PARENT CARE AND PARENT TO PARENT CONNECTION SIBLING CARE AND CONNECTION AND PARENT EDUCATION AND SUPPORT AND SO THAT WOULD BE THAT NEXT STEP BEYOND THE PARENT NAVIGATOR AND THE EMBEDDED RESOURCES THAT WILL GO INTO THAT NAVIGATOR. AND SO JUST BEFORE WE KIND OF GO A LITTLE TOO FAR INTO THAT I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE OUR MEMBERS OF THIS COMMITTEE. SO WE HAD A RATHER LARGE COMMITTEE THAT IS VERY VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT DIVERSITY. I KNOW THAT WE HAVE A FEW I KNOW DOLLIE THOMAS HAS BEEN A NOT JUST A MEMBER OF OUR COMMITTEE BUT A VALUABLE RESOURCE HERE IN THE DISTRICT AS SHE ALSO SERVES TO COMMUNICATE WITH OUR COMMITTEE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY HAS THEIR STUFF AND KNOWS WHEN MEETINGS ARE. SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE HER WORK AS WELL AS THE CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THIS COMMITTEE. OUR BOARD GOAL THIS YEAR HAS WAS HAD A DIFFERENT FOCUS. AS DR. BROCKMAN MENTIONED. SO IT WAS TO REVIEW THE DIVERSITY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE 19-20, 2019 AND 2020 CULTURAL PROFICIENCY TRAINING FOR STAFF. SO SINCE 20 I THINK IT WAS 2008 THE BOARD INITIATED A DIVERSITY TRAINING PROGRAM FOR PLANO ISD. AND THAT IS A TRAINING INITIATIVE THAT ACTUALLY IS FOR ALL 7000 STAFF MEMBERS SO ALL STAFF MEMBERS ARE TRAINED AND WE DO THAT EVERY OTHER YEAR IN A DIVERSITY TOPIC. SO TOPICS HAVE RANGED FROM MICRO AGGRESSIONS AND IMPLICIT BIAS TO WHAT THE DEMOGRAPHIC MAKEUPS AND CULTURAL INFLUENCES THAT ARE IN OUR DISTRICT TO THERE'S BEEN LOTS OF DIFFERENT TRAININGS THAT HAVE KIND OF SPANNED OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST ELEVEN YEARS. AND WHEN I BECAME A PART OF PISD THREE YEARS AGO IT WAS MY JOB TO KIND OF FIGURE OUT WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN THAT TRAINING. AND SO WE REALLY FOCUSED ON  IMPLICIT BIAS AND WE DEVELOPED A TRAINING CALLED CULTURALLY PROFICIENT RELATIONSHIPS. AND THAT TOOK THE TRAINING IN A LITTLE BIT OF A DIFFERENT DIRECTION REALLY CREATING THAT OWNERSHIP FOR EACH STAFF MEMBER TO FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT THEY HAD AND MAKING SURE THAT WE EXTENDED KINDNESS, RESPECT, TRUST AND COMPASSION TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT WE CAME IN CONTACT WITH IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE GOALS OF CULTURAL PROFICIENCY. SO WITH THE BOARD GOAL THIS YEAR THE WAY THAT OUR TRAINING PROGRAM WORKS IS THAT WE HAVE A YEAR THAT WE HAVE TRAINING ON CAMPUSES THAT IS DELIVERED BY PRINCIPALS OR ADMINISTRATIVE TEAMS. THEY SOMETIMES BRING ON CAMPUS, OTHER CAMPUS PEOPLE TO TRAIN NOT WITH THEM. WE PROVIDE THAT TRAINING TO OUR FANS DEPARTMENT. WE HELP WITH TRANSPORTATION. MY DEPARTMENT HELPS WITH THOSE. WE OFFER TRAININGS HERE AND SUPPORT DEPARTMENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS ARE TRAINED. BUT AS WE ARE IN AN OFF CYCLE YEAR THIS IS OUR DEVELOPMENT YEAR. SO WE HAVE AN IN DISTRICT DESIGN TEAM THAT WORKS ON WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR THIS TRAINING AND OUR DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE HAS BEEN INVALUABLE PARTNER THIS YEAR IN THINKING WITH US, HELPING US GATHER TOPICS, BRINGING RESEARCH ABOUT WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR SPACE, WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR CORPORATE SETTINGS, WHAT THEY SEE ARE ISSUES THAT THEY'VE NOTICED WITH THEIR STUDENTS WITH INTERACTIONS THAT THEY'VE HAD IN THE COMMUNITY TO HELP US REALLY FOCUS IN ON WHAT OUR TRAINING WILL BE IN THIS NEXT YEAR. AND SO OUR NEXT YEAR WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE THE TRAINING THAT WE HAVE ON CULTURAL AND PROFICIENCY WITH A FOCUS ON STORIES MATTER. SO YOUR STORY  MATTERS. MY STORY MATTERS AND HOW DO WE REALLY LEARN HOW TO TELL OUR STORY AND HOW DO WE LEARN HOW TO ASK ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S STORY IN A WAY THAT IS RESPECTFUL, IN A WAY THAT IS KIND AND IN A WAY THAT WE CAN COME TO THE TABLE AND LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER SO THAT WE CAN MOVE FORWARD IN A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP. AND SO THAT IS KIND OF THE THEME OF OUR TRAINING AS WE GO THROUGH THE NEXT YEAR. WE'RE USING A LOT OF REALLY REALLY WELL RESEARCHED ARTICLES AND RESOURCES AND WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE WAY THAT THIS HAS SHAPED UP FOR THIS NEXT YEAR. SO AS YOU CAN SEE MY NOVEL IS A MUCH DIFFERENT THAN THE STORY THAT A DOCTOR FIFTY TWO YEARS AGO THOUGHT. AND SO AS WE HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS YEAR AND AS I HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO BE THE CHAIR FOR,  IT'S BEEN VERY CLOSE TO MY HEART ABOUT  STORIES MATTERING. SO I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW YOU WHAT OUR RECOMMENDATIONS ARE FOR NEXT YEAR. AND THAT IS TO EXAMINE SOME OF THE ISSUES, DIVERSITY AND BELIEFS AND VALUES AND HOW IT SHAPES OUR DECISIONS AND OUR BEHAVIORS AND UNDERSTAND THAT UNCONSCIOUS BIAS WHAT THAT IMMEDIATE  SEVEN SECOND REACTION. THAT WASN'T A GOOD ONE OR THIS ONE WAS REALLY GOOD OR CAN YOU  USE THIS ONE AND NOT THIS ONE. AND IT WAS EVEN JUST THROUGH FACILITATING DIFFERENT  ACTIVITIES THAT WE WERE ABLE TO COME UP WITH WHAT WE FEEL LIKE IS A REALLY STRONG  TRAINING PLAN ALONG WITH SOME FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES THAT CAMPUSES WILL BE ABLE TO  USE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR SO IT ISN'T JUST A STANDALONE TRAINING. THERE ARE SOME  OTHER PIECES THROUGHOUT. SO ALONG WITH THE GOALS OF THE TRAINING, THE COMMITTEE HAS COME UP WITH A FEW OTHER SUGGESTED GOALS FOR NEXT YEAR'S WORK. ALL RIGHT. SO OUR FIRST GOAL WAS TO SUPPORT THE IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS  OF THE DISTRICT WIDE TRAINING. THIS WAS A VERY PASSIONATE GOAL THAT WE TALKED ABOUT  EVERY SESSION IS TO IDENTIFY MULTIPLE DATA  SOURCES THAT EFFECTIVELY EVALUATE THE IMPLEMENTATION AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TRAINING. TO REVIEW THE SURVEY AND IT'S PARTICIPANTS  AND IDENTIFY CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF CULTURAL [INAUDIBLE] IN THE DISTRICT AND TO USE SURVEY DATA AND FOCUS GROUP RESPONSES IDENTIFYING NEXT STEPS FOR TRAINING AND OUR FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES. NUMBER TWO WAS TO REVIEW AND ASSIST WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. YOU KNOW,  YOU GUYS CAN READ THE BULLET  POINTS BUT JUST TO SUM IT UP, WE THOUGHT THAT IT NEEDED TO HAPPEN MORE THAN ONCE A YEAR. WE HAVE NEW ADMINISTRATORS. WE HAVE NEW TEACHERS WE HAVE NEW PEOPLE COMING INTO THE DISTRICT. IT'S NOT HAPPENING EVERY YEAR. WE REALLY FELT PASSIONATE  THAT IT NEEDED TO HAPPEN EVERY YEAR. SO IT'S BEEN IT'S BEEN A COUPLE OF EXCITING WEEKS AS WE'VE MONITORED WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE LEGISLATURE DOWN IN AUSTIN AND WE HAVE TAKEN A TRIP DOWN AND VISITED WITH THE STAFF FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AND FROM SENATOR PAXTON'S OFFICE TO TALK ABOUT THE CHANGE OVER FROM THE HOUSE TO THE SENATE WITH THE SCHOOL FINANCE BILL. AND SO WE DID SEND A LETTER TO OUR LEGISLATORS OPPOSING THE MOVE FROM PRIOR YEAR VALUES TO CURRENT YEAR VALUES BECAUSE OF THE SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT THAT WOULD HAVE ON THE FINANCES OF OUR DISTRICT. AND SO RANDY COULD ACTUALLY GIVE NUMBERS BUT IT'S IN THE BALLPARK OF. I'M GETTING LOT OF FEEDBACK. I'LL  TURN MINE OFF. OF ABOUT 30 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR AND TO THE NEGATIVE IN ADDITION TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY. SO WE FELT THIS IS REALLY A SERIOUS MATTER. AND SO WE DRAFTED A LETTER THAT I SENT TO COLLEAGUES AROUND THE STATE TO TRY TO SEE IF THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN RAISING A VOICE OPPOSING THE IDEA OF CURRENT YEAR VALUES IN AND THE THEME OF  THAT LETTER WHICH WILL GO TO THE CONFEREE COMMITTEE ONCE IT'S ESTABLISHED WHICH WE ANTICIPATE ANY MINUTE IS THAT CURRENT YEAR VALUES IS NOT RESETTING THE FISCAL CALENDAR. IT'S TAKING THE GROWTH IN VALUES IN ANY DISTRICT ACROSS THE STATE AND THE STATE GRABBING THAT MONEY FOR THEMSELVES WHERE WE WOULD HAVE HAD THE BENEFIT OF IT IF IT WERE PRIOR YEAR VALUES. SO WE HAVE OUR OLD RECAPTURE AND NOW WE WOULD HAVE THIS AND THE STATE WOULD BENEFIT FROM THIS AND WE DON'T THINK THAT THAT'S RIGHT AT THE EXPENSE OF ALL OF OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE. WE HAVE FIFTY SIX DISTRICTS SIGNED ON TO THIS  LETTER IN THREE DAYS TIME. AND SO WE'LL BE SHARING THAT SHORTLY BECAUSE WE THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO RAISE OUR VOICES AND SO WE'RE GOING TO DO THE BEST WE CAN. WE'RE MONITORING ALL OF THE BILLS. I THINK THERE'S TWO THAT WE THAT WE'VE BEEN NOTIFIED OF JUST RECENTLY ONE THE SCHOOL START DATE DIED IN THE HOUSE YESTERDAY. SO NOT THAT WE WON'T START SCHOOL. THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEAN THE CHANGE OF TAKING AWAY LOCAL CONTROL FROM THE SCHOOL START DATE AND SETTING IT TO THE SEPTEMBER DATE DID NOT PASS THE HOUSE SO THAT DIED YESTERDAY. GO LOCAL CONTROL AND THE ONE THAT WE ARE WATCHING ALSO VERY CLOSELY IS THE AND WE ALL NEED TO BE PAYING ATTENTION TO IS ON THE SENATE SIDE.

THEY'VE ADDED FIVE STAAR TESTS TO THE BILL SO FIVE MORE TESTS. BUT WHAT I DON'T WANT IS THAT SCHOOL FINANCE SOLUTIONS GET LOST IN THE OTHER TWO BECAUSE IT FEELS A LITTLE BIT LIKE THE SHIFT IN THE SUBSTITUTE TO THE SUBSTITUTE WAS THAT IT WAS MORE ABOUT PROPERTY TAX RELIEF AND ACROSS THE BOARD PAY RAISE THAN IT WAS ABOUT FIXING SCHOOL FINANCE. AND THAT WORRIES ME HONESTLY. AND SO  THAT'S BEEN A CONVERSATION THAT WE'VE HAD AND YOU KNOW WE'VE SHARED THAT OPINION WITH DELEGATES THAT YOU KNOW IT SHOULD NOT BE AT THE EXPENSE OF SCHOOL FINANCE REFORM THERE NEEDS TO BE SOME OF ALL OF IT IN THE MEASURES. OUR HOPE AT THIS POINT IN TIME IS THAT THE CONFEREES ARE ABLE TO ADDRESS THESE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES BECAUSE HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS. WE GET LIKE 21.7 MILLION DOLLARS IS THAT ABOUT RIGHT? RANDY OR 21 SOMETHING AND THEN THE COSTS OF JUST THE MANDATED TEACHER PAY RAISE IS 22  SOMETHING JUST THAT ONE ITEM AND ALL OF THE OTHER TRANSFORMATIVE ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIALLY UNFUNDED. NOW YOU ADD THAT ON TOP OF THE BUDGET FIGURES WE'VE ALREADY BEEN TALKING ABOUT WHICH ARE IN THE RED THAT'S ANOTHER I MEAN THAT'S LIKE 50 MILLION IN TOTAL OR HOW MUCH? I MEAN THAT'S A HUGE. YES. SO OUR CURRENT PRELIMINARY BUDGET IS ABOUT A 33, 33 AND A HALF MILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. AND SO AS MISSY SAID THE RUNS THAT WE HAVE, THE LBB RUNS ARE A LITTLE BIT BETTER THAN THE ONES THAT WE HAVE BUT IT WOULD BASICALLY TAKE ALL OF ANY GAIN TO GO FOR

TEACHER SALARIES AND AS MISSY SAID IT WOULDN'T LEAVE ANY MONEY FOR ALL THE OTHER THINGS THAT ARE OUT THERE ALL ALL THE THINGS THAT THE SCHOOL FINANCE COMMISSION TALKED ABOUT ABOUT HOW TO IMPROVE EDUCATION IN TEXAS HOW TO GIVE THESE ADDITIONAL ALLOTMENTS, HOW TO CHANGE THINGS AROUND HOW TO BETTER SERVE AT RISK STUDENTS FREE AND REDUCED. ALL OF THAT WE WOULDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY BECAUSE WE WOULD BE AT A 33 MILLION DOLLAR OR WORSE OFF YOU KNOW THE NEXT COMPONENT THAT IS CAN YOU JUST GIVE TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS A $5000 INCREASE WITH WITH NO REGARD FOR ANY OTHER STAFF BECAUSE AS WE START GIVING ADDITIONAL RAISES TO YOU KNOW WHETHER IT'S COUNSELORS WHETHER IT'S OTHERS THAT HAVE DIRECT CONTACT WITH STUDENTS IT'S HARD TO DRAW A LINE AT A FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR INCREASE FOR THIS GROUP. SO WE HAVE ABOUT 10 PERCENT MORE OF THAT CATEGORY THAN JUST TEACHERS THAT DEAL DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS  WHETHER IT'S DIAGNOSTICIAN, COUNSELORS, PHYSICAL THERAPISTS, SPEECH THERAPIST. SO IT COST US ABOUT ANOTHER TWO AND A HALF MILLION TO DO THE SAME THING FOR THAT GROUP AND NOW WE'VE PUSHED INTO ASSISTANT  PRINCIPALS THAT WE HAVE TO ADJUST THEM.  AND IT JUST GOT A DOMINO EFFECT. AND IN THE MEANTIME WE DIDN'T EVEN GET TO ADDRESS THE REAL ONES THAT WE'RE HAVING A HARD TIME HIRING AND THAT'S FOOD SERVICE  WORKERS, BUS DRIVERS, THOSE AREAS AND SO ON. UNFORTUNATELY THE SENATE PLAN IS  NOT GOOD AT ALL FOR PLANO. WELL I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HARP ON AT THIS BOARD DAIS EVERY TIME IS LOCAL CONTROL AND WHEN THEY'RE TELLING US WHAT WE HAVE TO PAY A CERTAIN CLASS OF EMPLOYEES, WE'RE COMPRESSING THOSE OTHER EMPLOYEES AND WE'VE JUST REALLY GOT TO REMIND THEM THAT LOCAL CONTROL IS YOU KNOW WE'RE THE ONES THAT KNOW BEST HOW TO RUN THIS DISTRICT. AND I YOU KNOW WE HAVE ELECTIONS EVERY TWO YEARS SO IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU SEE THEN YOU KNOW RUN THE MEMBERS OFF I GUESS BUT THE LOCAL DECISIONS ARE THE ONES THAT MAKE THE MOST SENSE. AND FOR THEM TO TRY TO RUN OUR LOCAL DISTRICT FROM THE HOUSE AND SENATE IN AUSTIN DOESN'T WORK. SO TOMORROW THERE'S A MEETING OF TRUSTEES FROM AROUND THE STATE OCCURRING IN THE CAPITAL SO I'M GOING TO GET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING DRIVE DOWN THERE AND I'LL SEND THAT I THINK THERE ARE 25 OR 30 OTHER DISTRICTS GOING SO I'LL HEAR YOU KNOW I'LL BE THERE AND I'LL HEAR SOME SCUTTLE AND I'LL BRING IT BACK.

MISSY ARE THEY GOING TO TAKE THE MESSAGE ABOUT CURRENT YEAR VALUES. I DON'T KNOW. BECAUSE YOU KNOW NOT EVERYBODY CARES EQUALLY ABOUT THAT. THAT'S THE ONE WHERE THEY'RE TRYING TO REMOVE THE SCHOOL BOARD OR THE DISTRICT FROM HAVING ANY KIND OF ASSISTANCE WITH WATCHING THE BILLS DURING THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION AT ANY GIVEN BIENNIUM WE HAVE ABOUT TWO THOUSAND BILLS THAT ARE FILED REGARDING PUBLIC EDUCATION. AND SO WE DO NEED ASSISTANCE IN TRACKING THOSE BILLS.

AND IF WE DIDN'T HAVE TASB, I THINK WE'D HAVE A HARD TIME TRACKING THOSE BILLS AND MAINTAINING THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES THAT OUR COMMUNITY WANTS. SO SENATE BILL 29 IS A NO GO IN MY BRAIN. HOUSE BILL 281 WAS THE SIMILAR BILL IN THE HOUSE IT DIED YESTERDAY. SO THAT THAT NEVER MADE IT OUT OF CALENDAR COMMITTEE. SENATE BILL TWENTY NINE WE GOT AN UPDATE ON THAT TODAY ALSO FORWARDED THAT TO THE PTA BECAUSE THAT WOULD AFFECT ALL OF OUR PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATIONS AND THEIR ABILITY TO DO ANY OF THAT CHIMING IN. AND YOU KNOW WHEN WHEN PTA CALLED THEIR DELEGATES TO TALK WITH THEM THEY SAID WELL THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO PTA, AND THEY'RE LIKE, YES IT DOES. AND SO THAT  WASN'T THE INTENTION BUT YOU KNOW IT AFFECTS A LOT OF THINGS. AND SO IT'S A BROADLY WRITTEN LAW. BUT WHEN YOU APPLY IT TO THE LETTER IT AFFECTS A LOT OF GROUPS.

WELL I THINK IT ALSO IMPAIRS OUR ABILITY TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF OUR DISTRICT WHICH TRULY IS A FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT INFRINGEMENT ON TRUSTEES. SO I THINK THAT THEY NEED TO CONSIDER HOW THEY'RE WRITING THAT BILL. SO WHAT'S THE APPETITE IN THE HOUSE FOR THE ADDITIONAL TESTING THAT WAS PUT INTO THE FUNDING BILL. I MEAN BETWEEN THAT THE TEACHER MANDATORY RAISE, CURRENT YEAR VALUES THIS FEELS A LOT LIKE POISON PILLS BEING PUT INTO, I KNOW THEY'RE GOING TO  CONFERENCE BUT POISON PILLS THAT ARE GOING TO PUSH THIS TO A SPECIAL SESSION. THAT'S MY  QUESTION IS WHAT IS YOUR WHAT ARE YOUR GUT FEELINGS ABOUT WHETHER THEY BE ABLE TO GET THEIR JOB DONE OR DO YOU THINK WE'LL BE GOING TO A SPECIAL MEAN. I DON'T KNOW. SO THE CURRENT PRELIMINARY BUDGET IS BASED ON CURRENT LAW AND IT HAS A PLACE HOLDER IN THE BUDGET NOT A COMMITMENT FROM THE BOARD OF A 2 PERCENT ACROSS THE BOARD PAY RAISE ON THE MIDPOINT. SO WE WOULD GO AHEAD AND ADOPT THAT BUDGET IF THEY GO INTO SPECIAL SESSION. THEN WE'D HAVE TO DO AN AMENDMENT LATER ON. THE OTHER THING WE'VE GOT TO DO IS IS WORK WITH LEGAL AND PROBABLY WITH  TASB ON WHEN DO WE ADOPT A COMPENSATION PLAN BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW WE RUN THE RISK IF WE GIVE SOMETHING IN THE STATE MAKES THEIR MONEY BE SUPPLEMENTAL TO THAT AND SO THAT COULD DOUBLY HIT US. SO WE'RE STILL WORKING THROUGH ALL THAT. IT'S IT'S SOMETHING WE'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH IN PREVIOUS LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS WHEN THEY WENT TO A SPECIAL SESSION BUT WE JUST HAVE  TO BE REALLY CAREFUL ON THAT COMPENSATION PLAN BECAUSE WE SURE CAN'T AFFORD TO GIVE A 2 PERCENT PAY INCREASE UNLESS SOMETHING MAGNIFICENT CHANGES AND GIVE A FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR TEACHER PAY INCREASE OR OUR DEFICIT WOULD JUST GET A LOT LARGER THAN IT CURRENTLY IS. SO IS THAT INFORMATION THAT WE CAN HAVE FROM LEGAL YOU KNOW BEFORE THE NEXT BOARD MEETING OR REALLY WE CAN'T MOVE WITHOUT KNOWING THAT IN TERMS OF COMPENSATION AND SO WE WILL NEED TO KNOW WHAT OUR OPTIONS ARE AND HOW TO APPROACH THAT IF COMPENSATION IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN AMEND AT A LATER PERIOD. I WOULD THINK THAT THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY IF THEY GO TO SPECIAL SESSION THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS COMPENSATION IS NOT UNTIL AUGUST UNLESS WE COME IN AND DO A SPECIAL MEETING WHICH OF COURSE I THINK ALL OF US WOULD BE WILLING TO DO FIVE OF THE SEVEN OF US WOULD BE WILLING TO DO THAT. BUT WE DO NEED TO HAVE THAT INFORMATION BEFORE WE CAN APPROVE A BUDGET. YEAH AND JUST TO CLARIFY WE WOULDN'T BRING ANYTHING FOR A COMPENSATION PLAN ON MAY 21ST.
