NORMALLY IT'S THE AGGIES WHO GET ALL THE RECOGNITION AND I'M NOT THE ONLY NORTH TEXAS GRAD UP HERE, BUT MY FRESHMAN YEAR MY TWO ROOMMATES WERE BOTH PART OF THE MUSIC PROGRAM, ONE OF WHOM WAS A RHODES SCHOLAR WHO CAME TO NORTH TEXAS FOR MUSIC AND MADE THE JAZZ BAND HER FRESHMAN YEAR PLAYING SAX, WHICH IS REALLY QUITE A FEAT. BUT WHAT STRUCK ME ABOUT THIS WAS THAT I NEVER SAW THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE IN THESE LITTLE SOUNDPROOF ROOMS, SPENDING JUST HOURS AND HOURS EVERY DAY PRACTICING TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM IT AT THAT LEVEL.
AND IT STRUCK ME THE DEDICATION IT TAKES TO YOUR CRAFT.
RIGHT? AND IT'S A VERY DIFFERENT DEDICATION THAN READING A TEXTBOOK.
I JUST WONDER HOW MANY OF YOU ARE SENIORS.

SO HE HAD BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.
AND SO THROUGH THE WHOLE KIND OF WRAP AROUND PACKAGE OF HOW SPECIAL NEEDS ARE HELPED IN OUR COMMUNITY AND THE VARIOUS SUPPORTS THAT WE HAVE.
HE WENT STRAIGHT FROM THE STATE OF TEXAS EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS INTO PLANO ISD EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION, WAS TESTED IN THE DISTRICT, HAS GONE THROUGH NOW ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE WITH ONE YEAR.
WE TRIED LEAVING THE DISTRICT FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL AND THAT WAS NOT VERY SUCCESSFUL AND WE CAME BACK BECAUSE PLANO ISD IS SO EXCELLENT IN SO MANY WAYS, BUT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIAL EDUCATION.
SO I WAS VERY GRATEFUL TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE.
LAST YEAR I WAS A PARENT PARTICIPATING IN THE THE EXPO THAT WE HAD THAT WAS VIRTUAL.
AND THEN THIS YEAR, BEING ON THE COMMITTEE AS A PARENT IN PARTICULAR, I WAS VERY EXCITED TO SEE HOW RESPONSIVE THE COMMITTEE WAS AS FAR AS THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THE PLANO ISD STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION IN UNDERSTANDING WHAT THE NEEDS OF THE FAMILY ARE.
SO I THINK THE EMPHASIS ON COMMUNICATION SO THAT PARENTS KNOW THAT WE HAVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES AND ALSO THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE THAT WE HAVE IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OUR ADMINISTRATION, OUR FACULTY ON CAMPUS AND OUR FAMILIES, AND THAT IT DOES AFFECT THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE CITY OF PLANO BECAUSE OF OUR RELATIONSHIPS.
EVENTUALLY, WHEN OUR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO BECOME YOUNG ADULTS AND OLDER ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND WORKING WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND HAVING A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE THAN THEY WOULD HAVE HAD IF THEY HADN'T GONE THROUGH ALL OF THESE SUPPORTS.

AND SO EACH SOCIAL WORKER WOULD EITHER BE ASSIGNED TO ONE CAMPUS OR TWO CAMPUSES AND THEY WERE HOUSED AT THAT PARTICULAR CAMPUS AND SERVED THOSE NEEDS FOR THOSE SCHOOLS.
AND SO AGAIN, THIS YEAR WE'VE TRANSITIONED INTO MORE OF A DISTRICT MODEL.
AND HOW IS THAT? I MEAN, BESIDES SERVING MORE CAMPUSES, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT A FAMILY THAT MIGHT BRIDGE ACROSS MULTIPLE BUILDINGS AND HOW THAT WORKS? ABSOLUTELY. SO, FOR EXAMPLE, WE IT'S NOT UNCOMMON FOR US TO HAVE AN ELEMENTARY FAMILY THAT HAS A FAMILY OF, YOU KNOW, FOUR OR FIVE MEMBERS.

AND FURTHERMORE, THIS ALLOWS US TO PARTNER AND COLLABORATE WITH OUR STAKEHOLDERS INSIDE THE DISTRICT, OUTSIDE OF THE DISTRICT, SUCH AS TRAFFIC, 9-1-1, ADVOCACY CENTER, THE HOPE SQUAD, WHICH YOU'LL HEAR A LITTLE BIT MORE FROM KATIE THIS AFTERNOON, THIS EVENING AND THIS IS OUR GOAL HERE IS SIMPLY TO SUPPORT, EQUIP OUR FAMILIES AND PROVIDE YEAR ROUND AWARENESS AROUND THESE VERY IMPORTANT TOPICS.

SO THE PROCESS FOR SOCIAL WORKERS TO BEGIN WORKING WITH STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IS THROUGH OUR TIERED SYSTEM FOR REFERRALS, WHICH IS SIMILAR TO THE MTS FRAMEWORK THAT THE DISTRICT USES. TIER ONE IS CAMPUS BASED SUPPORTS FOR ALL STUDENTS.
TIER TWO IS ALSO WHERE WE TRY TO COLLABORATE AND FORM RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE EXTERNAL AGENCIES TO REALLY BUILD OUR RESOURCE LIST AS WELL, WHICH I'LL BE GOING OVER IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. AND TIER THREE IS WHERE WE PROVIDE INTENSIVE, DIRECT SUPPORT TO OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.
SO AS LINZY WAS TALKING ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO AND TENDS TO REC SERVICES, LOOKS A LOT LIKE ONE ON ONE INDIVIDUAL THERAPY WITH STUDENTS, GROUP SUPPORT WITH STUDENTS, INTENSE CASE MANAGEMENT WITH FAMILIES AND IMMEDIATE CRISIS SUPPORT FOR CAMPUSES.
THE FIRST PIECE OF DATA THAT WE WANTED TO GO OVER WITH YOU ALL IS OUR REFERRALS.
AND THIS SHOWS THE PERCENTAGES OF REFERRALS BROKEN DOWN BY CLUSTERS.
AND AS WE CAN SEE, ALMOST 50% OF THE SERVICES REQUESTED HAVE BEEN FOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES.
CAN I ASK A QUESTION HERE? SO AS YOU'RE GOING THROUGH THESE REFERRALS, ARE MOST OF THESE REACTIVE IN NATURE TO A SPECIFIC EVENT FOR A STUDENT, OR ARE THESE PROACTIVE IN NATURE WHERE, FOR EXAMPLE, A FAMILY MAY REACH OUT OR SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE, I GUESS, WHAT ARE YOU ALL SEEING MORE REACTIVE TO EVENTS OR PROACTIVE TO REQUESTS? IT VARIES IN SITUATIONS.
SOMETIMES WE RECEIVE TIER THREE SUPPORT SERVICES AFTER A STUDENT HAS MADE A LIKE A SUICIDAL OUTCRY.
OR SOMETIMES STUDENTS ARE STARTING, ESPECIALLY AFTER COVID, WHEN STUDENTS ARE RETURNING BACK TO SCHOOL, COUNSELORS AND TEACHERS ARE SEEING STUDENTS HAVING A LOT OF ANXIETY IN SCHOOLS, AND SO THEY'RE SUBMITTING REFERRALS FOR US TO COME IN AND WORK WITH THOSE STUDENTS.

THOSE INTERVENTIONS THAT STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING OUTSIDE.SO WE'RE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT SOME OF THOSE INTERVENTIONS WITHIN SCHOOL AS WELL.

SO AND THIS MAY BE A COURTNEY QUESTION FOR YOU, BUT AS WE AS I THINK THROUGH BUILDING AT MAPLE SHADE AND KIND OF A CENTRALIZED CENTER, AT LEAST, YOU KNOW, HAVING THAT DUPLICATE ON BOTH SIDES OF TOWN WILL I'M HOPING THAT THE OUTCOME WILL THAT WILL BE RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES TO GET INTO A TIER ONE SITUATION BEFORE WE GET INTO A TIER THREE.
