ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 27 2022.

I DECLARE AN EMERGENCY OR URGENT PUBLIC NECESSITY EXISTS, REQUIRING IMMEDIATE DELIBERATION AND POSSIBLE ACTION OF THE PLANO ISD CITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES DO THE REASONABLY UNFORESEEABLE SITUATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE RETIREMENT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT.

IF THERE ARE NO OBJECTIONS FROM THE BOARD, WE WILL PROCEED.

AT THIS TIME, I ASKED SARA BONSER TO VERIFY THAT WE ARE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT REGARDING THE NOTICE FOR THIS MEETING.

[5.1. Consideration and Possible Action to Accept the Letter of Retirement of the Superintendent]

FIRST ACTION ITEM, WHICH IS THE ACCEPTANCE OF LETTER OF RETIREMENT FROM SUPERINTENDENT BONSER. AND SO BEFORE WE HAVE A MOTION, I'D LIKE TO STOP AND AND GIVE MY BOARD COLLEAGUES AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK.

I THINK WE WOULD ALL SAY THAT WE PROBABLY WOULD LIKE TO REJECT THIS, BUT WE CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND THAT'S NOT AN OPTION.

SO COLLEAGUES, ANYBODY CARE TO MAKE COMMENT AT THIS TIME.

I'LL GO AHEAD. YOU KNOW, WE RELUCTANTLY ACCEPT YOUR RESIGNATION.

I TOTALLY RESPECT AND UNDERSTAND YOUR NEED TO BE WITH FAMILY AT THIS TIME.

AND I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU, SARA, BECAUSE WHEN YOU CAME INTO THIS DISTRICT, YOU HAD A VISION AND YOU PUT TOGETHER AN AMAZING TEAM.

WE ARE STEADFAST GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

YOUR VISION HAS ALWAYS BEEN WHAT IS BEST FOR KIDS.

AND I THINK YOU HAVE MADE CERTAIN THAT THAT VISION IS SEEN FROM THE CLASSROOMS TO THE BUSSES TO THE CAFETERIAS EVERYWHERE.

AND I DON'T MEAN TO GET THIS WAY, I'M SORRY, BUT.

WELL, I HATE TO SEE YOU GO TOTALLY RESPECT THAT YOU NEED TO LEAVE TO BE WITH FAMILY, AND WE WISH YOU THE VERY BEST AND THANK YOU FOR SETTING US ON SUCH A STEADFAST COURSE AND PUTTING TOGETHER AN AMAZING TEAM.

YOU'LL BE MISSED.

SARA, WELL, WE ARE VERY SAD THAT YOU'RE RETIRING AND WE'RE GOING TO MISS YOU GREATLY BECAUSE YOU GAVE PLANO ISD 25 YEARS OF SERVICE, DEDICATION, LOVE OUR STUDENTS AND LOVE FOR THE STAFF AND EVERYBODY IN HERE.

OH MY GOD, I THINK I'M GOING TO TEAR UP.

I WAS TRYING NOT TO DO THIS.

OK. I AM THANKFUL FOR SARA TAKING THE LEADERSHIP ROLE WHEN SHE DID IN 2017, WHEN I FIRST BECAME ABOARD MEMBER, AND SHE HAS PHENOMENALLY GOOD FOR OUR DISTRICT.

AND I WANT TO GIVE EVERYBODY IN THE PUBLIC TO KNOW THAT SARA DID AN AMAZING JOB.

I'M SO SORRY, I CAN'T KEEP MYSELF TOGETHER BECAUSE THE THING IS THAT THE ADMINISTRATION HERE REALLY RESPECTS YOU, I RESPECT YOU AS A BOARD MEMBER AND I WANT EVERYBODY TO KNOW THAT SHE'S RETIRING, NOT BECAUSE WE DON'T RESPECT HER.

SHE HAS MY RESPECT.

I ALWAYS MET WE, SARA, AND I MET ALWAYS AS BOARD MEMBER AND SUPERINTENDENT, EVERY QUARTERLY UPDATE, YOU KNOW, I'M LOOKING FORWARD JUST TO ONE DAY WE'RE GOING TO MEET AS A FRIEND. IT'S LIKE I'M EAGER TO KNOW HER AS A FRIEND, NOT AS MY SUPERINTENDENT.

BOTH MY HUSBAND WENT K THROUGH 12 HERE AND YOU WERE A TEACHER AND YOU WERE A LEADER IN THE DISTRICT ELEVEN OUT OF THE 13 YEARS I WAS IN, I WAS IN SCHOOL HERE AND I CHECKED THE DATES AND AND SO I THINK AS A TRUSTEE AND AS A BOARD MEMBER, AND I KNOW WE HAVE MANY TEACHERS IN OUR DISTRICT AND I KNOW WE HAVE MANY PARENTS IN OUR DISTRICT WHO ARE LIKE ME, RIGHT, WHO WENT TO SCHOOL HERE AND AND CHOSE THIS FOR OUR KIDS.

AND HAVING A SUPERINTENDENT THAT HAD THAT LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND COMMITMENT AND CONTINUITY TO THE DISTRICT IS RARE.

AND YOU KNOW, I'LL ECHO ANGELA.

I HAVE GREAT AND TREMENDOUS RESPECT FOR YOU.

AND I THINK IF COVID HAS TAUGHT US ANYTHING AS HUMANS, YOU KNOW, IT'S REALLY THAT WE HAVE TO DECIDE WHAT OUR PRIORITIES ARE AND GO FOR IT.

AND FOR YOU PRIORITIZING YOUR FAMILY, IT MAKES ME RESPECT YOU MORE.

AND SO I'M OBVIOUSLY HAVE VERY COMPLICATED FEELINGS FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR EXPERTISE AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND YOUR PASSION FOR THIS DISTRICT AND YOUR SERVICE FOR THIS DISTRICT.

BUT I ALSO WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THE BEST.

LEADERS LEAD BY WORDS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY LEAD BY ACTIONS.

AND FOR A LONG TIME NOW, YOU HAVE BEEN REMINDING ALL OF US TO PUT OUR FAMILIES FIRST.

AND I CANNOT THINK OF A BETTER TIME, AS WE ARE ALL STILL UNFORTUNATELY STRUGGLING IN A VERY CHALLENGING TIME IN OUR LIVES.

AND YOUR LEADERSHIP HAS BEEN PHENOMENAL.

AND IT CONTINUES TO BE PHENOMENAL BECAUSE YOU ARE REMINDING US WHERE OUR PRIORITIES LAY.

AND I GREATLY APPRECIATE THAT AND I LOOK FORWARD TO JUST GIVING MORE ACCOLADES AND MORE POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT YOU AS WE MOVE FORWARD.

I WILL SAY I HAVE SAID UNEQUIVOCALLY, I'VE HAD A PLEASURE OF BEING IN THIS INDUSTRY FOR A LONG TIME, AS A TEACHER AND AS A PARENT.

AND I'M A STUDY OF LEADERSHIP, AND I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT WHAT MAKES LEADERS REALLY GOOD AND EFFECTIVE. AND YOU ARE THE QUINTESSENTIAL LEADER, SARA, AND WE ARE SO BLESSED AND PRIVILEGED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO WALK IN THE JOURNEY WITH YOU FOR THE LENGTH OF TIME WE'VE GOTTEN TO WALK ON THAT JOURNEY.

SO THANK YOU. YOU CAME INTO THIS JOB AT A TIME THAT FELT FAIRLY STABLE.

AND THINGS CHANGED.

ONE OF MY FIRST LUNCHES WITH YOU, WE WERE DISCUSSING, WHERE ARE WE PLAYING THIS FOOTBALL GAME? THAT'S A DILEMMA WE NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE TO FIGURE OUT.

AND AND BECAUSE OF YOUR CONNECTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY AND OTHER DISTRICTS, WE DID FIGURE THAT OUT.

AND AFTER THAT, IT WAS JUST ONE TEST AFTER THE NEXT, INCLUDING COVID, OF COURSE.

BUT THIS IS.

YOU KNOW, TRULY UNPRECEDENTED TIMES THAT YOU'VE HAD TO SERVE AND MANAGE AND FIGHT BATTLES. YOU KNOW, SOME OF THEM PRIVATELY AND CLOSED SESSION WITH US, YOU KNOW, AND THOSE ARE BATTLES PEOPLE WILL NEVER KNOW ABOUT AND THAT HAVE MADE THE DISTRICT BETTER.

AND THEN ALSO BATTLES PUBLICLY FOR STUDENTS AND OUR TEACHERS AND FOR OUR DISTRICT.

AND I CAN'T THINK OF A MORE DIFFICULT TIME TO LEAD AND LEAD IN PUBLIC EDUCATION THAN THE PAST THREE YEARS AND 30.

SO THAT MEANS I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE TO RELY ON, BUT IT SURE SEEMS LIKE THE PAST THREE YEARS HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT.

SO I APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICE THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE MADE, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THAT SACRIFICE HAS TO COME TO AN END BECAUSE THERE'S A PRIORITY TO BE MADE AND YOU'VE SAID IT TO YOUR TEACHERS AT THE CONVOCATION EACH YEAR.

AND NOW YOU'RE YOU'RE OWNING WHAT YOU'VE SAID TO THEM THAT YOU'VE GOT TO PUT FAMILY FIRST. AND I TRULY RESPECT YOU MAKING THAT DECISION RIGHT NOW AND TAKING THAT TIME AND KNOWING THAT TIME IS FINITE AND WHAT YOU DO WITH IT IS SPECIAL.

SO I WISH YOU THE BEST.

SO, SARA, IT IS WITH GREAT RELUCTANCE THAT THE BOARD WILL ACCEPT YOUR LETTER OF RETIREMENT, AND WE CERTAINLY UNDERSTAND YOUR NEED AND YOUR DESIRE TO SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY.

THERE WILL BE A TIME LATER TO CELEBRATE YOUR CAREER AND YOUR IMPACT ON PISD, AND AS WE FOREWARNED SARA IN CLOSED SESSION TO ROAST HER, THAT'S NOT TODAY.

TODAY IS A CHALLENGING DAY FOR THE PISD COMMUNITY.

YOUR LEGACY WILL BE THE TEAMS THAT YOU HAVE CREATED, THE LEADERS YOU HAVE CULTIVATED AND THE CULTURE YOU HAVE ESTABLISHED TO WITHSTAND THE TOUGHEST OF BLOWS.

WE LIVE IN UNPRECEDENTED TIMES AND WE HAVE ASKED MORE FROM OUR EDUCATION, OUR EDUCATORS AND OUR EDUCATIONAL LEADERS THAN ANYONE IMAGINED POSSIBLE YET.

PISD CONTINUES TO THRIVE AND OUR TEACHERS CONTINUE TO SUCCEED DOING THE HARD WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR OUR KIDS, AND THAT IS A TESTAMENT TO YOUR WORK AND DEDICATION.

AND WE AS A BOARD, THANK YOU FOR THAT.

WELL, THERE IS A TOUCH OF SADNESS IN THE AIR, WE ARE NOT SAYING GOODBYE TODAY.

LET'S BE MINDFUL OF THAT TODAY.

THERE IS WORK TO DO AND THERE WILL BE WORK TO DO EVERY DAY TO MAINTAIN AND BUILD UPON WHAT YOU AND YOUR TEAMS AND ALL OF OUR TEAMS IN PLANO ISD HAVE ESTABLISHED, AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE PART OF THAT WORK FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR AND THEREAFTER AS WE TRANSITION TO A NEW LEADER. I AND THE REST OF THE BOARD LOOK FORWARD TO HOLDING ON TO YOU AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BEFORE YOU NEED TO LEAVE US.

AND WHILE CHANGE AND THE UNKNOWN CAN BE FRIGHTENING AT TIMES, IT IS COMFORTING TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE YOU FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR.

AND SO I WANT EVERYONE TO BE MINDFUL OF THAT, THAT WE DO STILL HAVE HER.

AND SO WITH THAT, WE WILL LET US TAKE A VOTE AND THEN I WILL TURN IT OVER TO YOU FOR ANY COMMENTS YOU MIGHT HAVE.

BUT BUT FOR NOW, I JUST HAVE A FEW WORDS THAT I WANT TO SAY BECAUSE I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT IN TIMES OF TRANSITION THAT THE LEADER TALKS AND IS GENUINELY OPEN AND ABLE TO KIND OF PUT PUT OUT THERE WHAT'S GOING ON, YOU KNOW, AND WHAT PROMPTED CHANGE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING PEOPLE WILL NEED TO KNOW BECAUSE TRUST MATTERS.

AND I'VE BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH THE DISTRICT BY THE TRUSTEES.

AND SO THAT WORD MEANS A LOT.

AND SO WHEN THINGS CHANGE, IT'S IMPORTANT TO TALK ABOUT IT AND AND BE OPEN ABOUT IT.

AND SO THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING TO DO.

IT HAS BEEN A PRIVILEGE AND AN HONOR TO SERVE AND HAVE SERVED AS THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE PLANO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT.

THERE IS NEVER A TIME IN THE LIFE OF A SUPERINTENDENT WHEN YOU CAN SAY THE WORK IS DONE.

AND I THINK FOR ALL OF THE ADMINISTRATORS IN THE ROOM AND ANYONE WATCHING, YOU KNOW, LIKE YOU, YOU'RE NEVER FINISHED.

EVERY YEAR THERE'S A NEW GROUP OF STUDENTS THAT COME IN THE DOORS AND KIDS GROW AND CHANGE, AND WE ARE MASTERS AT ADAPTING TO THE CHANGING NEEDS OF OUR KIDS.

WE DO IT ALL THE TIME.

AND SO THIS TEAM IS WELL EQUIPPED TO ADAPT TO THIS CHANGE.

AND I HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT THE SYSTEMS WE'VE BUILT AND THE LEADERS WE HAVE IN PLACE AND THE TEACHERS IN OUR CLASSROOMS AND FROM EVERY POSITION IN THIS DISTRICT, THESE THESE PEOPLE ARE COMMITTED TO OUR STUDENTS AND AND THAT IS THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR DISTRICT AND THAT WILL NOT CHANGE.

IT HAS NEVER CHANGED.

SO I'M ANNOUNCING MY PLANS TO RETIRE.

LIKE YOU SAID, YOU HAVE ME AT LEAST UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR.

AND THEN HOWEVER, YOU NEED ME AFTER THAT IN SUPPORTING A SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR THE DISTRICT. I HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT THIS TOO MUCH.

BUT LAST FEBRUARY, AMIDST ALL OF THE THE THINGS THAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN GOING THROUGH, MY BIG SISTER MARY AND SHE SAID, IT'S OK FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT THIS.

WHO IS 60, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LIVER CANCER.

AND SO ANYONE WHO'S HAD A FAMILY MEMBER OR A FRIEND OR RELATIVE WHO'S BEEN IMPACTED BY BY SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS THAT KNOWS THAT FAMILIES HAVE TO BAND TOGETHER TO HELP EACH OTHER THROUGH THAT. AND THEY LIVE VERY FAR AWAY THEY ARE FROM NORTHERN WISCONSIN, WHICH IS

BASICALLY THE TUNDRA.

AND SO OVER THE WINTER BREAK, WE JUST DIDN'T GET THE NEWS THAT WE HAD KIND OF HOPED FOR.

AND SO WITH A LOT OF THOUGHT AND PRAYER AND CONVERSATION, YOU KNOW, I AM GOING TO LIVE INTO THE VALUE THAT I HAVE ALWAYS ASKED MY STAFF TO DO, WHICH IS TO PUT YOUR FAMILY FIRST. BECAUSE WHILE I LOVE BEING A SUPERINTENDENT AND I WOULD ONLY WANT TO BE A SUPERINTENDENT HERE, I HAVE HAD MY DREAM JOB IN MY HOMETOWN.

BUT THIS TIME WITH MARY IS MY PRIORITY.

AND SO I'M GOING TO DO THAT AND I'M BLESSED BECAUSE NOT EVERYBODY HAS THE OPPORTUNITY OR THE, YOU KNOW, I GUESS THAT'S THE BENEFIT OF GETTING OLD RIGHT WHEN YOU HAVE THIRTY THREE YEARS IN. YOU DO GET TO MAKE A CHOICE.

AND SO I CHOOSE MY FAMILY AND PLANO ISD WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF MY FAMILY.

BUT IT'S TIME FOR ME TO GO BE WITH MARY WHEN SHE NEEDS ME AND TO SUPPORT ALL OF MY FAMILY AS WE GO ON THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER AND CONTINUE.

SO I'M GOING TO KIND OF SWITCH GEARS FOR JUST A SECOND AND AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT, YOU KNOW, I'VE LIVED HERE FOR 30 YEARS AND MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE RAISED OUR FAMILY HERE AND WE HAVE TO PLANO EAST GRADUATES.

AND SO I KNOW THE IMPORTANCE AND THE VALUE OF A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION AND THAT'S BEEN IN PLACE FOR A LONG TIME.

THAT LEGACY OF WHEN OUR KIDS LEAVE OUR SCHOOLS, THEY ARE READY.

THAT DOESN'T CHANGE, THERE'S BEEN HOW MANY SUPERINTENDENTS SINCE THEN, YOU KNOW, SINCE I WALKED IN THE DOOR IN 1992, THAT THAT WON'T CHANGE BECAUSE THAT'S THE LEGACY AND THE HALLMARK OF THIS COMMUNITY.

WE BELIEVE IN PUBLIC EDUCATION AND WE BELIEVE IN THE WORK THAT WE DO AND WHAT THAT DOES FOR KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND WE VALUE THAT AND THAT WILL NOT CHANGE.

AND I FEEL VERY SURE OF THAT, IT WAS THAT WAY BEFORE I CAME, AND IT WILL BE THAT WAY WHEN I GO. AND EVERYTHING THAT WE'VE DONE WHILE I'VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO SERVE IN BUILDING THE TEAM, YOU ALL ARE SITTING RIGHT HERE AND THE TEAMS AT THE CAMPUS, THEY'RE STRONG AND THEY'RE RESILIENT AND THEY HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY CAN LEAD THROUGH CHANGE AND WE'LL DO IT NOW. I ALSO WANT THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, THE.

THE ABILITY OF A SUPERINTENDENT TO DO THEIR JOB RESTS VERY, VERY CLEARLY IN THE RELATIONSHIP THAT THEY HAVE WITH THEIR SCHOOL BOARD.

AND THESE ARE STRANGE TIMES, AND THERE'S A LOT OF NARRATIVES THAT GET WRITTEN ABOUT WHATEVER ALL OVER THE PLACE.

BUT THE TRUE NARRATIVE HERE, AND I HOPE ANYONE WATCHING OR SITTING HERE TODAY CAN SEE IS THAT THIS BOARD AND AND I, WE CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER AND WE RESPECT ONE ANOTHER AND WE WE HAVE BUILT STRONG RELATIONSHIPS.

AND YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEXT SUPERINTENDENT NOT EVERY COMMUNITY CAN SAY THAT, BUT THIS COMMUNITY CAN.

AND SO THE LEVEL OF SUCCESS OF A SUPERINTENDENT RESTS ON THE QUALITY OF THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT THESE TEAM OF EIGHT HAVE TOGETHER AS A TEAM.

AND THIS IS A STRONG TEAM AND WE ENJOY THAT.

AND AND SO WHOEVER COMES IN HERE, WHOEVER IS WATCHING THIS AND WANTS TO KNOW, LIKE, WHAT ABOUT THAT THIS PLACE, LIKE, WE'VE GOT IT RIGHT.

YOU KNOW, WE'VE GOT IT RIGHT.

WE TALKED THROUGH THINGS.

WE WORK TOGETHER.
