[3. RECOGNITIONS ]

THIS EVENING, WE ARE PROUD TO RECOGNIZE PLANO ISD STUDENTS WHO ARE WINNING AWARDS AT THE STATE LEVEL AND ABOVE.

PLEASE SEE THE PRESENTATION OF NAMES ON THE MONITORS.

I THINK THEY WERE ROLLING PRIOR TO THE MEETING AS WELL.

THE COLLEGE BOARD HAS RECOGNIZED 38 PLANO ISD STUDENTS AS NATIONAL RECOGNITION PROGRAM DESIGNATED SCHOLARS.

THIS PROGRAM INVITES AFRICAN-AMERICAN, HISPANIC-AMERICAN AND INDIGENOUS STUDENTS WHO HAVE ACHIEVED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE TO APPLY FOR RECOGNITION.

FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR, PLANO ISD HAS BEEN NAMED A TEXAS ART EDUCATION ASSOCIATION DISTRICT OF DISTINCTION FOR VISUAL ARTS.

THIS AWARD RECOGNIZES DISTRICTS WITH OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN PROMOTING THE VISUAL ARTS IN THEIR DISTRICT AND IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

WE ARE ALSO CELEBRATING SEVENTY NINE NATIONAL MERIT PROGRAM SEMIFINALISTS FOR 2022.

THESE SENIORS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE IN THE COMPETITION FOR 7500 SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH A TOTAL OF NEARLY $3 MILLION.

AND IN SCIENCE, TWO STUDENTS HAVE ACHIEVED THE TOP THREE HUNDRED IN BROADCOM MASTERS.

THIS IS A PREMIER STEM COMPETITION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND YOU SEE THEIR NAMES THERE ON THE MONITOR, VERY IMPRESSIVE LIST OF ACHIEVEMENTS AND A VERY IMPRESSIVE LIST OF STUDENTS.

AND SO I WANT TO WISH CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THESE STUDENTS.

WE ALSO HAVE IN PERSON A RECOGNITION FOR AN AWARD WON OVER THE SUMMER.

I INVITE DR. KATRINA HASLEY, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR ACADEMIC SERVICES, TO INTRODUCE THIS RECOGNITION.

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT STOLLE.

I'M PLEASED TO CALL TO THE PODIUM DIRECTOR OF ADVANCED ACADEMICS KEVIN MOORE TO ANNOUNCE DETAILS ABOUT THIS, THIS HONOR AND ACHIEVEMENT.

KEVIN WILL BE PROVIDING YOU DETAILS ON THE UIL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN ROBOTICS ACHIEVED BY VINES HIGH SCHOOL FIRST ROBOTICS TEAM IN JUNE.

OUR ROBOTICS PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW AND WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THIS TEAM AND THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.

KEVIN? THANK YOU.

DR. HASLEY AND PRESIDENT STOLLE AND TRUSTEES.

ROBOTICS IS ONE OF THE NEWEST COMPETITIONS THAT IS SANCTIONED BY THE UIL.

IT BEGAN AS A PILOT PROGRAM IN 2015 2016, WITH OFFICIAL ADOPTION IN 2018 2019.

STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE BEEN COMPETING FOR MANY YEARS, WITH FIRST, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT COMBINES THE EXCITEMENT OF TRADITIONAL SPORTS WITH THE RIGOR OF STEM LEARNING.

IT'S EXCITING TO SEE THE UIL HONOR THE DEDICATION AND HARD WORK OF THESE STUDENTS IN COMPETITION.

ROBOTICS INCORPORATES NUMEROUS STEM COMPONENTS THAT DEVELOP BENEFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR STUDENTS, INCLUDING MECHANICAL AND SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, COMPUTER PROGRAMING AND MATHEMATICS.

PARTICIPATION IN ROBOTICS FOSTERS CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION WHILE TEACHING

[00:05:02]

STUDENTS TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY AND TO THINK CRITICALLY AND ANALYTICALLY.

ON JUNE 5TH, PLANO ISD SCHOOLS TRAVELED TO SAN ANTONIO TO COMPETE AGAINST TEAMS FROM 5A AND 6A SCHOOLS IN THE FIRST TECH CHALLENGE PORTION OF THE UIL STATE ROBOTICS COMPETITION CALLED THE TEXAS CUP.

AFTER ADVANCING FROM QUALIFICATION ROUNDS TO THE ELIMINATION ROUNDS, THE TEAM FROM VINE'S HIGH SCHOOL, THE VI-BOTS, WERE ONE OF THREE TEAMS THAT MADE UP THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ALLIANCE.

THE VI-BOTS PUT IN COUNTLESS HOURS OVER THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR TO BUILD AND PROGRAM THEIR ROBOT.

THEY HOSTED AND ATTENDED SCRIMMAGES AND COLLABORATED VIA ZOOM WITH THEIR MENTOR, BILL BECKMAN FROM [INAUDIBLE].

WE APPRECIATE THE PLANO ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF ROBOTICS AND THIS TEAM'S ACCOMPLISHMENT.

IF WE CAN NOW ASK THE TEAM MEMBERS TO COME TO THE FRONT.

[APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER] WELL, WELL, I AM SORRY, I THOUGHT WE HAD A A DEMONSTRATION.

OK.

SORRY.

YES.

OK, WANT THE KIDS TO TELL US WHAT MAKES THEIR ROBOT SO SPECIAL AND MAYBE GIVE US A LITTLE DEMO.

YES.

DO THE DEMONSTRATION FIRST AND THEN THEY'RE GOING TO INTRODUCE THEMSELVES.

YEAH.

OK.

THE GAME FOR FIRST ROBOTICS, FTC AND ALL THE FIRST ROBOTICS CHALLENGES CHANGES FROM YEAR TO YEAR.

AND SO THIS GAME'S MAIN ELEMENT WAS PICKING UP THE RINGS THAT YOU SEE BEFORE US AND SHOOTING THEM INTO GOALS, SO I THINK ROBERT'S GOING TO SHOW YOU THAT RIGHT NOW.

OK.

OK.

ALL RIGHT.

YEAH.

THEY HAVEN'T DRIVEN THIS ROBOT ALL SUMMER, SO.

OK, SO NOW IT'S PICKED UP SOME RINGS, AND NOW ROBERT IS GOING TO SHOOT THEM.

BATTERY APPEARS TO BE A LITTLE BIT LOW.

OK, WELL, WE'LL PROBABLY NOT GET AH.

THERE YOU GO.

[LAUGHTER] AND MAYBE WE COULD SHOW THEM PICKING UP THE WOBBLE GOAL THERE.

HOW'S THAT GOING? OK.

ALL RIGHT.

THERE WE GO.

THERE WE GO.

ALL RIGHT.

WE NORMALLY HAVE TWO CONTROLLERS ON THIS ROBOT.

I'M NOT SURE.

ALL RIGHT.

YOU GOT IT.

THERE WE GO.

ALL RIGHT.

GREAT JOB, TEAM.

[APPLAUSE] OK.

ONE OF THE CONTROLLERS ISN'T WORKING.

I THINK THAT'S ENOUGH.

[LAUGHTER] UNLESS Y'ALL WANT TO SEE MORE.

[APPLAUSE] [INAUDIBLE] WORK A LITTLE BIT BETTER AT COMPETITION.

[LAUGHTER] WELL, WE'RE GOING TO GET YOU ALL TO INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO US AND ALSO TELL US EXACTLY HOW WELL IT DID PERFORM AT COMPETITION.

BUT JUST BRIEFLY, IF ANY OF YOU ALL SAW THE VIDEO OVER THE WEEKEND OF THE WHAT IS IT? THE BOSTON DYNAMICS DANCING ROBOT DOG THAT WAS AT A FOOTBALL GAME THAT ALL STARTS HERE WITH THIS KIND OF THING.

AND SO IT BE JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS AND THAT'S WHAT YOU GUYS WILL BE DOING.

SO IT'S AMAZING WORK, WHICH YOU'RE ALREADY DOING NOW.

SO BRITNEY, LET'S GET THE MICROPHONE OVER.

IF Y'ALL WILL INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO US AND THEN WHOEVER YOU'D LIKE TO

[00:10:04]

DESIGNATE AS THE SPOKESMAN, TELL US ABOUT THE COMPETITION AND HOW Y'ALL DID.

OK, SO I WAS THE COACH OF THE TEAM LAST YEAR AND.

THIS GAME KIND OF PLAYS OUT LIKE A ROBOT SPORT AND THERE'S A NEW GAME EVERY YEAR.

THIS YEAR'S GAME WAS PICKING UP RING.

YEAH, THE THE GAME OF THE YEAR WE PLAYED WAS WE PICK UP RINGS AND WE SHOT THEM INTO A THREE TIERED TOWER.

AND THE HIGHEST TOWER SCORED A LOT OF POINTS, BUT YOU HAD TO BE PRETTY PRECISE TO SCORE THEM.

AND A LOT OF OTHER ELEMENTS AS WELL, WHICH IS WHY THERE WAS DIFFERENT MECHANISMS ON THE BOTTOM.

RIGHT NOW I AM A SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR JUNIOR.

[LAUGHTER] YEAH, I'M ROBERT.

I'M A JUNIOR NOW.

I WAS A SOPHOMORE THEN AND.

YEAH.

OH, YEAH.

ABOUT THE ROBOT.

SO YOU HAVE THE MAIN SYSTEMS OF THE ROBOT, THERE'S THE INTAKE HERE.

THAT WORKS BY THERE'S PIECES OF SURGICAL TUBING SANDWICHED BETWEEN GEARS OR SOME WHEELS DOWN HERE THAT SPIN AND GRAB THE RINGS AND PULL THEM UP.

THROUGH A CHANNEL WE HAVE HERE.

AND WE HAVE THIS LEVER ARM AND THAT PUSHES THE SERVO INTO THIS PIECE OF HOME DEPOT BUCKET LID AND THE SPINNING WHEEL RIGHT HERE CONTROLLED BY A MOTOR.

SHOOTS OUT THE WHEEL AT THE TARGET AND WE HAVE HAD TO USE LIKE POWER CONTROL TO MAKE SURE WE SHOT THE RING AT THE RIGHT SPEED BECAUSE BATTERY VOLTAGE IS NOT VERY CONSISTENT AT TIMES.

ALL RIGHT.

I'M [INAUDIBLE] AND I'M ALSO A JUNIOR, I WAS A SOPHOMORE WHEN I WORKED ON THIS.

WELL, ACTUALLY, I WAS STUCK AT HOME BECAUSE OF COVID, SO I COULDN'T REALLY WORK TOO MUCH ON THE ROBOT.

SO ALL I KNOW IS THAT IT'S SPECIAL BECAUSE IT'S GOT A HOME DEPOT BUCKET RIM.

BUT YEAH, I JUST LIKE WORKED ON, YOU KNOW, THE WEBSITE OR DESIGNING THE HOODIES AND T SHIRTS AND THE SLIDE PRESENTATION AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

I DON'T HAVE TOO MUCH EXPERIENCE ON THAT BECAUSE I WAS STUCK AT HOME.

I'M LUKE AND I WAS A SOPHOMORE, THEN JUNIOR NOW, AND I WAS JUST THE GUY THAT BUILDS THINGS, I GUESS.

OH YEAH.

OH YEAH.

[INAUDIBLE] AND I WERE CODING AND ALISON AND LUKE WERE BUILDING.

YEAH.

ANYWAYS, PART I WORKED ON MOST WAS THE DRIVE TRAIN OR BASICALLY THE WHEELS.

AND THE SPECIAL PART ABOUT OURS IS THAT IT CAN MOVE IN ANY DIRECTION WITHOUT TURNING THE ROBOT ITSELF.

I'M ALISON.

I WAS A FRESHMAN LAST YEAR.

I'M NOW A SOPHOMORE AND ANOTHER PART OF OUR ROBOT IS THE WOBBLE [INAUDIBLE] ARM, WHICH YOU DIDN'T GET TO SEE A GOOD DEMONSTRATION OF BECAUSE ONE OF OUR CONTROLLERS WASN'T WORKING.

BUT THIS ARM MOVES UP AND DOWN AND IT CLOSE.

IT OPENS AND CLOSES USING SERVO ARMS TO PICK UP DIFFERENT WOBBLE GOALS.

AND THAT'S WHAT I DO AS A DRIVER.

BUT I ALSO HELP WITH BUILD TEAM.

YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION, AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT MY MY SISTER WORKS AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY AND SHE SAID THAT COMPUTER SCIENCE IS NOW THE HARDEST MAJOR TO GET INTO IN THE ENGINEERING SCHOOL THERE.

AND SO BETWEEN THE BUILDING COMPONENT, THE ENGINEERING COMPONENT, THE COMPUTER SCIENCE COMPONENT, Y'ALL ARE RIGHT ON TRACK TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH ONCE YOU GET OUT OF OUT OF PISD.

AND SO WE'RE AWFULLY PROUD OF Y'ALL.

ALL RIGHT, TRUSTEES.

ANYBODY HAVE QUESTIONS COMMENTS FOR FOR THIS TEAM? I HAVE A QUESTION AND SEVERAL COMMENTS.

OK.

SORRY, I'M A SCIENTIST AND SO I'M JUST I'M SO EXCITED AND I'M JUST GEEKING OUT FOR YOU GUYS.

AND THIS IS WONDERFUL.

WHAT ARE THE NUMBERS ON YOUR SHIRTS REPRESENT? CAN YOU WALK ME THROUGH YOUR LOGO? YEAH, THE NUMBERS ON THE SHIRT.

ONE ONE THREE FOUR ONE.

THAT'S OUR TEAM NUMBER OUR DESIGNATED.

IT'S ON THE ROBOT TOO.

I THINK IT'S ON THAT SIDE, TOO.

YEAH, BUT THAT'S OUR TEAM NUMBER AND FIRST.

AND THEN WE HAVE OUR TEAM NAME DOWN HERE AND 2020 TO 2021 FOR THE YEAR OF THE COMPETITION AND THEN ON THE BACK OF THE HOODIE AND ON THE SHIRT.

IT'S VINES HIGH SCHOOL 10341 VI-BOTS.

AND THEN ROBOTICS AND HILTY, OUR SPONSOR.

THAT'S GREAT, AND IT'S JUST.

YOU KNOW, WORKING IN THE FIELD THAT I WORK IN.

IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR SCIENCE IS, IF YOU CAN'T COMMUNICATE THAT TO PEOPLE AND IF YOU'RE NOT PRESENTING A PROFESSIONAL FRONT.

AND YOU KNOW, THE LOGO DESIGN AND THE TEAMWORK AND EVERYTHING REALLY GOES INTO THE WHOLE PACKAGE.

SO I JUST I'M SO IMPRESSED.

THIS IS WONDERFUL.

I'M VERY EXCITED THAT Y'ALL WERE ABLE TO DO GREAT AT THIS COMPETITION.

AND YOU KNOW, ASIDE FROM ROBOT DOGS LIKE NASA BUILDS ROVERS, YOU KNOW, YOU ALL ARE LIKE TWO STEPS AWAY FROM THE NEXT MARS ROVER AND AND I I JUST COULD NOT BE MORE, MORE IMPRESSED.

SO THANK YOU GUYS, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEMONSTRATION AND AND SCIENCE AS A TEAM SPORT, ENGINEERING IS A TEAM SPORT AND Y'ALL HAVE DONE GREAT, REPRESENTED US VERY WELL.

SO I'M LOOKING AT THREE JUNIOR FOUR JUNIORS AND ONE SOPHOMORE, SO THERE'S ONLY MORE FOR YOU ALL TO DO, SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT THAT MAY BECOME AS YOU ARE.

[00:15:01]

ARE ALL OUR JUNIORS AT PLANO SENIOR HIGH? YEAH.

OK.

AWESOME.

WELL, LUCKY PLANO SENIOR HIGH.

I GO TO VINES WELL, YES, ALISON, AND YOU'RE THE ONE WE ARE MOST.

YOU KNOW, YOU'VE GOT THREE MORE COMPETITIONS IN YOUR FUTURE, SO WE'RE EXCITED, PERHAPS.

SO YAY AND THANK Y'ALL SO MUCH.

I ALSO WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO MR. ALVES.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

MY MY SON, WHO IS AN ENGINEER, HAD HIM FOR ENGLISH.

SO I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO SAY THAT SCIENCE IS ALL ABOUT MORE THAN JUST MATH.

AND THAT ENGLISH COMPONENT PROBABLY WAS VERY IMPORTANT AND HELPFUL IN THIS AS WELL.

AND YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO APPRECIATE YOUR SPONSOR AS MUCH AS YOU SHOULD, BUT TO HAVE HILTY AS A SPONSOR AND TO SUPPORT FOR THIS IS A HUGE BIG DEAL.

AND SO WE APPRECIATE HILTY AND WE APPRECIATE YOU FOR BEING A SUPPORT AND A COACH.

THAT IS THAT IS IMPORTANT.

WE CANNOT IN THIS DAY AND AGE TEACH KIDS WITHOUT HAVING COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO WHAT THE FUTURE CAN BRING FOR THEM.

SO WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND FOR YOUR EFFORTS IN SUPPORTING THIS TEAM.

SO THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE] I JUST WANT TO SAY SOMETHING QUICKLY, AND I'M ANGELA POWELL.

YOUR SUCCESS SHOWS THAT HOW YOUR GROUP OPERATE AS A COLLABORATIVE TEAM, SO GREAT JOB AS WORKING TOGETHER.

AND I WANT TO SAY, KEEP IT UP, OK? YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB FOR US.

THANK YOU.

[APPLAUSE] ALL RIGHT.

WELL, BEFORE WE LET YOU ALL GO AND GO HOME AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK OR WHATEVER YOU'D LIKE TO DO.

WE HAVE ONE MORE PRESENTATION.

SO IF Y'ALL COULD COME OVER HERE TO NANCY.

NANCY HUMPHREY, OUR BOARD VICE PRESIDENT, HAS A PRESENTATION FOR YOU.

FLOOR'S YOURS.

AND PARENTS COME UP AND COME TAKE PICTURES, DON'T SIT BACK THERE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE WAY BACK THERE.

YEAH, THIS IS A BIG DEAL WE WANT.

WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.

ALL RIGHT.

[APPLAUSE] SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL, WE CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS WHILE YOU'RE STILL WITH PLANO ISD AND BEYOND AND TO OUR SPONSORS AND TO HILTY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE TIME THAT YOU PUT IN HELPING PREPARE OUR KIDS TO COMPETE IN THE MOST RIGOROUS ENDEAVORS.

AND THIS IS THE PROOF THAT ALL THAT TEAMWORK WORKS.

SO CONGRATULATIONS.

THAT'S [INAUDIBLE].

AND I WILL SAY, IF YOU'D LIKE TO STAY FOR A RIVETING SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, YOU ARE WELCOME TO DO SO.

HOWEVER, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO AND HAVE DINNER OR ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR EVENING, NOW

[00:21:21]

IS YOUR CHANCE TO ESCAPE.

THANK YOU, GUYS.

ALL RIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO PAUSE FOR JUST A SECOND.

ALL RIGHT, LET'S LET'S KEEP GOING, SO WE'RE GOING TO CHANGE UP AN ITEM ON THE AGENDA AND WE'RE GOING TO IF THERE ARE NO OBJECTIONS FROM THE REST OF THE BOARD, WE'D LIKE TO HEAR AGENDA ITEM SEVEN THE CONSENT AGENDA FIRST, MOVING THIS UP IN ORDER TO INTRODUCE ONE OF OUR NEW ADMINISTRATIVE APPOINTMENTS AFTER BOARD APPROVAL.

ANY OBJECTIONS FROM THE BOARD? ALL RIGHT.

[7. CONSENT AGENDA ]

HEARING NONE.

THE CONSENT AGENDA CONSENT CONSISTS OF ROUTINE ITEMS GROUPED TOGETHER FOR APPROVAL AS ONE ITEM.

UNLESS REMOVED FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA.

THESE ITEMS WILL BE ACTED ON AT ONE TIME WITH NO DISCUSSION.

BOARD MEMBERS AT ANY REQUEST TO REMOVE ITEMS FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA FOR FURTHER DISCUSSION? OK.

HEARING NONE MAY I HAVE A MOTION? I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

I SECOND.

I HAVE A MOTION BY CODY WEAVER, A SECOND BY NANCY HUMPHREY, THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.

ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.

MOTION PASSES SEVEN TO ZERO.

AND SO WITH APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA, WE NOW HAVE A NEW PRINCIPLE TO

[Additional item ]

INTRODUCE.

SO DR. BROCKMAN? THANK YOU.

I'M GOING TO CALL JILL STOKER UP TO INTRODUCE OUR NEW PRINCIPLE OF MITCHELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT STOLLE, BOARD TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT BONSER AND CABINET.

IT IS MY PLEASURE TONIGHT TO INTRODUCE NEW MITCHELL PRESIDENT, PRINCIPAL PRESIDENT.

HE'S PRESIDENT TOO IN THE KINDERGARTEN EYES.

AS YOU KNOW, LARISSA LINER, FORMER MITCHELL PRINCIPAL, IS MOVING AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION TO WORK WITH OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE TO YOU TONIGHT, CHAD STOKER, OUR NEW MITCHELL ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL.

[APPLAUSE] CHAD IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR WITH PLANO ISD, BUT HE BRINGS A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE FROM SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICTS AS AP TEACHER INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST.

SO WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE HIM IN PLANO AND HE IS CURRENTLY THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT MITCHELL ELEMENTARY.

SO THIS WILL PROVIDE A VERY SMOOTH TRANSITION SINCE IT'S IN OCTOBER, A LITTLE HARD TIME.

BUT HE IS GOING TO CONTINUE THE WORK AND THE LEARNING AND ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS HAPPENING AT MITCHELL.

AND TONIGHT HE HAS WITH HIM, HIS FAMILY.

WE HAVE HIS WIFE, TIFFANY.

AND HIS BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS, ANNIKA AND AVA THIRD AND KINDERGARTNER AND MOM BETTY

[00:25:01]

STOKER.

[APPLAUSE] SO WELCOME, CHAD, AND WE ARE THRILLED TO HAVE YOU AS PRINCIPAL OF MITCHELL.

CHAD, JUST CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU.

WE'RE SO THRILLED TO HAVE YOU TAKE ON THE LEADERSHIP ROLE AT MITCHELL ELEMENTARY AND TO YOUR FAMILY, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THE TIME HE'S GOING TO PUT IN AND ALL OF THE THINGS THAT A PRINCIPAL DOES THAT, YOU KNOW, SOME OF IT HAPPENS IN FRONT.

EVERYBODY SEES IT.

BUT THERE'S A LOT THAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES TO HAVE A SCHOOL RUN SMOOTHLY AND HAVE LEARNING AS THE PRIMARY PRIMARY GOAL FOR ALL THE KIDS.

AND WE KNOW YOU'LL DO AN OUTSTANDING JOB LEADING THAT CAMPUS.

SO CONGRATULATIONS AND WE'RE HERE TO HELP YOU AND SUPPORT YOU AND REALLY EXCITED FOR YOU.

SO WELCOME.

WELCOME.

WELCOME.

SO WELCOME.

I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU ALL THE SAME OPPORTUNITY THAT WE JUST GAVE OUR STUDENTS, SO IF YOU'D LIKE TO GO HAVE DINNER AGAIN, RIVETING AS THIS IS NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO ESCAPE.

CONGRATULATIONS.

[4. PUBLIC COMMENT SESSION ]

ALL RIGHT, WE ARE NOW GOING TO MOVE TO THE PUBLIC COMMENT PORTION OF OUR AGENDA.

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER DR.

THERESA WILLIAMS WILL ADVISE IF ANYONE SIGNED UP TO ADDRESS THE BOARD, DR.

WILLIAMS. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT STOLLE.

WE HAVE FIVE COMMENT CARDS THIS EVENING.

ONE AGENDA ITEM AND FOUR NON AGENDA.

OK, THANK YOU.

AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION IN A BOARD MEETING OCCURS DURING THE PUBLIC COMMENT SESSION, AT ALL OTHER TIMES.

THE AUDIENCE SHOULD NOT ENTER INTO DISCUSSION ON MATTERS BEING CONSIDERED BY THE BOARD UNLESS REQUESTED BY THE PRESIDING OFFICER.

AT REGULAR BOARD MEETINGS THE BOARD PERMITS PUBLIC COMMENT, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE TOPIC IS AN ITEM IS ON THE AGENDA OR NOT.

INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATE BY SUBMITTING A COMMENT CARD IN ADVANCE OF THE MEETING, WHICH ARE NOT TRANSFERABLE TO ANOTHER SPEAKER.

IF A SPEAKER IS NOT PRESENT WHEN HIS OR HER NAME IS CALLED, THE SPEAKER FORFEITS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK.

IN THE INTEREST OF TIME IN THE ORDERLY CONDUCT OF BUSINESS.

THE BOARD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ADJUST WHEN PUBLIC COMMENT WILL OCCUR DURING THE MEETING, REORDER AGENDA ITEMS, CONTINUE AGENDA ITEMS TO A LATER MEETING, PROVIDE EXPANDED OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENT OR ESTABLISH AN OVERALL TIME LIMIT FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.

ALSO ADJUSTING THE TIME LIMIT ALLOTTED TO EACH SPEAKER AND OR MAKE OTHER REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE TIMING OF PUBLIC COMMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH LAW.

THREE MINUTES MAY BE PROVIDED FOR EACH COMMENT, HOWEVER, IF THERE ARE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMMENTS EXCEEDS 10, THE TIME LIMIT MAY BE REDUCED.

IN THIS CASE, WE HAVE LESS THAN 10, SO TONIGHT'S SPEAKERS WILL HAVE THREE MINUTES EACH.

A TIMER IS DISPLAYED ON THE SCREENS, AND IF YOU ARE NOT FINISHED SPEAKING AT YOUR THE END OF YOUR TIME, YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO STOP.

SECRETARY CHAMBERS WILL ALSO BE KEEPING TIME, AND AT THE END OF YOUR TIME, SHE WILL ASK YOU TO PLEASE WRAP UP YOUR COMMENTS.

COMMENTS ARE LIMITED SOLELY TO THE IDENTIFIED ITEM OR NON AGENDA ITEM INDICATED ON THE SPEAKER'S CARD.

SHOULD AN INDIVIDUAL FAIL TO ADDRESS THE ITEM LISTED ON THE CARD SUBMITTED, I WILL STOP THE SPEAKER AND REQUEST THAT THEY MAINTAIN FOCUS ON THE TOPIC LISTED.

SPECIFIC FACTUAL INFORMATION OR RECITATION OF EXISTING POLICY MAY BE FURNISHED IN RESPONSE TO INQUIRIES, BUT THE BOARD SHALL NOT DELIBERATE REGARDING A SUBJECT THAT IS NOT INCLUDED ON THE POSTED AGENDA.

THE BOARD MAY ALSO REFER TO SPEAKER TO A STAFF MEMBER AND AUTHORITY OVER A SPECIFIC ISSUE.

THE PRESIDING OFFICER OR DESIGNEE SHALL DETERMINE WHETHER AN INDIVIDUAL ADDRESSING THE BOARD HAS ATTEMPTED TO SOLVE A MATTER ADMINISTRATIVELY THROUGH RESOLUTION CHANNELS ESTABLISHED BY POLICY.

IF NOT, THE INDIVIDUAL SHOULD BE REFERRED TO THE APPROPRIATE POLICY TO SEEK RESOLUTION.

IT'S A CRIMINAL OFFENSE FOR A PERSON WITH INTENT TO PREVENT OR DISRUPT A LAWFUL MEETING TO SUBSTANTIALLY OBSTRUCT, INTERFERE WITH THE ORDINARY CONDUCT OF A MEETING BY PHYSICAL ACTION OR VERBAL UTTERANCE, AND THEREBY CURTAIL THE EXERCISE OF OTHERS FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.

IF AFTER AT LEAST ONE MORNING FROM THE PRESIDING OFFICER, AN INDIVIDUAL CONTINUE TO DISRUPT THE MEETING BY HIS OR HER WORDS OR ACTIONS.

THE PRESIDING OFFICER MAY REQUEST ASSISTANCE FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT TO HAVE THE INDIVIDUAL REMOVED FROM THE MEETING.

WITH ALL OF THAT, SAID DR.

WILLIAMS, PLEASE CALL OUR FIRST SPEAKER TO THE PODIUM.

OUR FIRST SPEAKER THIS EVENING IS LYDIA ORTEGA TO SPEAK ON ITEM AGENDA ITEM EIGHT POINT TWO BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS.

SO I HAVE JUST A QUESTION OF A QUESTION FOR YOU ABOUT EIGHT POINT TWO.

I THINK THAT ESTABLISHING THE BOARD GOALS IS A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT ASPECT.

I'VE SEEN THE VERY IMPRESSIVE PEOPLE THAT WILL BE SPEAKING ABOUT IT, BUT I'M WONDERING HOW MUCH COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT HAS BEEN ATTEMPTED TO GET COMMUNITY FEEDBACK ON THESE GOALS.

WE KNOW WE GET VERY LITTLE TIME TO RESPOND TO THE ISSUES THAT COME UP.

AND IF WE COULD BE PART OF THE PROCESS OF GETTING GOALS, ESTABLISH WHEREVER THAT'S APPROPRIATE, THEN I THINK I WOULD ASK PLEASE THAT AN EFFORT BE MADE TO SOLICIT

[00:30:02]

COMMUNITY RECOMMENDATIONS OR PARTICIPATION IN SUCH COMMITTEES.

THAT'S ALL.

THANK YOU.

I'M ALSO THE NEXT ONE FOR THE OPEN COMMENT.

THAT BEING SAID, OUR, YOU'RE UP NEXT, AND IT'S TO SPEAK REGARDING PUBLIC COMMENT AND NON AGENDA.

RIGHT.

IF YOU'LL HOLD UP A SECOND, WHAT WAS THE TOPIC TOPIC LISTED FOR THE NON AGENDA? PUBLIC COMMENT.

OK, SLASH NON AGENDA.

OK, WHAT WAS THE TOPIC OF YOUR COLUMN? THE TOPIC IS THE LIBRARY, BOOKS AND GRAPHIC MATERIAL.

OK, VERY GOOD.

THANK YOU.

OK.

I'M JUST WAITING FOR THE CLOCK TO GO TO ONE.

OH, SORRY.

I WANT TO READ TO YOU FROM A TEXTBOOK OUT OF THE VINES LIBRARY, AND THIS ONE BEGINS WITH A WOMAN ZO GIRL, A YOUNG GIRL HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH SNOW ANGEL.

SHE SAYS, I DON'T WANT A BLOWJOB AND SNOW ANGEL REPLIES, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? SNOW GIRL GOES ON.

WELL, DOUG TRIED TO GO DOWN ON ME.

GEEZ, THAT SOUNDS DORKY, BUT I WAS LIKE, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, THAT'S OK.

SNOW ANGEL ASKED WHY, AND ZO GIRL SAID, WELL, LIKE YOU SAID, THE WHOLE ORDER THING, BUT IN REVERSE, [INAUDIBLE], I'M BLUSHING, JUST TALKING ABOUT IT.

IT GOES ON TO DESCRIBE VERY SEXUAL BLOWJOBS AND BUSTING YOUR CHERRY ABOUT SEX IN A CHURCH BASEMENT.

THIS IS NOT REALLY APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN AT ALL.

IT IS VULGAR MATERIAL WHICH IN THE OLD DAYS, IF YOU WENT TO A LIQUOR STORE AND YOU SAW SUCH MATERIAL, IT WOULD BE BEHIND THE COUNTER TO PREVENT STUDENTS AND KIDS FROM [INAUDIBLE] THROUGH THIS MATERIAL.

IF YOU GO TO IF YOU GO TO A MOVIE AND YOU FIND THIS KIND OF INFORMATION IN THE MOVIE, YOU WOULD HAVE A PARENTAL WARNING FIRST.

BUT WITH OUR PISD, YOU ACTUALLY HAVE STUDENTS WHO COULD JUST GO CHECK OUT A BOOK ON THIS MATERIAL.

SO I THINK WE ARE BEHIND WHERE WE NEED TO BE WITH RESPECT TO PARENTAL INPUT ON THIS ISSUE.

AND I FIND THAT THE BOOKS ARE SEXUALIZING KIDS, MAKING THEM VULNERABLE TO MOLESTATION, RAPE AND PEDOPHILES, BECAUSE AS I READ THE BOOK, IT EMPOWERS THEM TO THINK THEY KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH SEX WHEN IN FACT THEY ARE REALLY NOT MATURE TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS.

SO THESE LIBRARY BOOKS ALSO HAVE THE PROBLEM, AND THERE'S MANY.

WE HAVE READ THEM OF CIRCUMVENTING SCHOOL POLICY THAT ALLOWS PARENTS TO OPT OUT OR EVEN IN THE NEW POLICY TO OPT IN.

SO DO YOUR KIDS HAVE THE CHANCE TO HAVE THEIR PARENTAL APPROVAL OF OPTING IN TO READ SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE A WARNING ON IT? SINCE CONSTANT BOOK MONITORING AND REVIEW IS COSTLY.

I RECOMMEND THAT YOU INCENTIVIZE STUDENTS WHO COME ACROSS SUCH GRAPHIC MATERIAL TO REPORT THE BOOK IN RETURN FOR A FIVE HUNDRED REWARD FROM THE SCHOOL BUDGET.

I THINK THAT'S THE WAY TO CULL THIS MATERIAL AND TO ENSURE THAT THE COSTS AREN'T BORNE BY THE STAFF AND FACULTY.

THANK YOU.

OUR NEXT NON AGENDA ITEM SPEAKER IS KATIE REINHARD TO SPEAK ABOUT BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY.

HI, GOOD EVENING.

THIS BOOK IS AT PLANO EAST HIGH SCHOOL, THIS BOOK IS IN PLANO EAST AND WEST HIGH SCHOOL.

SAME AUTHOR, SAME KIND OF GRAPHIC MATERIAL.

I WAS SHOCKED AND I'M ACTUALLY KIND OF DISGUSTED THAT I HAVE TO USE THE WORDS THAT I HAVE TO USE THAT I FOUND IN THESE BOOKS.

PAGE 120 F THAT GUY.

I HOPE HE DROPS DEAD F IT.

PAGE ONE TWENTY TWO.

DO YOU WANT TO SEE MY DICK? THE F? PAGE 90.

I HAVE A JOKE.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A [EXPLETIVE] AND A REFRIGERATOR? A REFRIGERATOR DOESN'T FART WHEN YOU PULL THE MEAT OUT.

[EXPLETIVE] WHAT IF I TOLD YOU I TOUCHED ANOTHER GUY'S DICK? SUCKED IT.

HE SUCKED MINE TOO.

IT WASN'T TERRIBLE.

THIS ONE.

SAME THING.

SAME AUTHOR F-WORD THROUGHOUT PROFANITY.

VULGARITY DEROGATORY TO WOMEN TALKING ABOUT GIRLS IN DEROGATORY WAYS ABOUT SHARING HIS WIFE'S SEXUALLY.

WHO WOULD THEY DO? BOTH SMOKING, DRINKING, CURSING.

I JUST WANT TO SAY I WAS VERY SHOCKED.

I THINK THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PUTTING THESE BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY NEED TO BE ACCOUNTABLE, AND I GET IT.

[00:35:01]

I VOLUNTEERED IN IN MY CHILDREN'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY.

IF A IF A LIBRARIAN IS GOING ONLINE AND READING THE YOU KNOW, THE.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT, BUT WHEN YOU GET INTO IT IS WHERE THE VULGARITY STARTS, SO I GET IT.

IT NEEDS TO BE COOPERATION BETWEEN MAYBE A VOLUNTEER PARENTAL COMMITTEE THAT IS WILLING TO READ THE BOOKS.

LET'S HAVE A DISCUSSION.

IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONABLE MATERIAL, THEN WE DECIDE WHETHER WE WANT THAT BOOK SHELVED OR NOT, BECAUSE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE FOR A LIBRARIAN TO KNOW.

BUT IF PEOPLE ARE PURPOSELY PUTTING THESE BOOKS OUT THERE, THEY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THAT.

AND I THINK CERTAIN AUTHORS SHOULD BE BANNED WHEN THINGS LIKE THESE ARE FOUND.

YOU KNOW THIS AUTHORS SHOULD BE PUT ON A BAN LIST SO LIBRARIANS KNOW NOT TO BUY ANY BOOKS FROM THESE AUTHORS.

WE NEED BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARIES THAT INSPIRE KIDS TO DO BETTER, TO BE BETTER, TO EDUCATE, INSPIRE, EMPOWER EVERY STUDENT TO ACTIVATE THEIR UNIQUE POTENTIAL.

THAT'S YOUR GOAL RIGHT THERE.

THESE KIND OF BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARIES DO NOT DO THAT, AND THEY DO NEED TO BE REMOVED.

THANK YOU.

OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS MIKE TURNER.

TO SPEAK ON NON AGENDA ITEM, AND THE TOPIC IS LEADERSHIP, GOVERNMENT AND EDUCATION.

HI, I'M MIKE TURNER.

SOME YEARS AGO, I GRADUATED FROM HARVARD COLLEGE, MAGNA CUM LAUDE IN HISTORY AND FROM THE UCLA BUSINESS SCHOOL WITH HONORS CONCENTRATING IN FINANCE AND ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR.

I LIKE TO READ AND I LIKE HISTORY.

IN 1965, THE U.S.

GOVERNMENT DEBT WAS HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS.

IN 2000, IT WAS FOUR TRILLION.

2010 IT WAS TEN TRILLION.

AND NOW IT IS 28 TRILLION.

PLEASE THINK ABOUT THAT, HOW THAT MONEY.

IS ALLOCATED BY THE GOVERNMENT, HOW IT FLOWS THROUGH THE SOCIETY AND WHAT THE EFFECT ON BEHAVIOR IS, A GREAT EXAMPLE IS THE WAR ON POVERTY, WHICH WAS ALSO A WAR ON EDUCATION, ALSO KNOWN AS THE GREAT SOCIETY.

IN HIS JANUARY 1964 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS, PRESIDENT JOHNSON PROCLAIMED THAT THIS ADMINISTRATION TODAY HERE AND NOW DECLARES AN UNCONDITIONAL WAR ON POVERTY.

IN THE 50 YEARS SINCE THAT TIME, U.S.

TAXPAYERS, THAT'S ALL OF US HAVE SPENT OVER TWENTY TWO TRILLION ON ANTI-POVERTY PRO EDUCATION.

SIR, CAN I CAN I ASK YOU TO PAUSE AND WE'LL GIVE YOU YOUR FULL TIME HERE? BUT IS THIS RELATED AT ALL TO PLANO ISD OR YOU'RE GOING TO CONNECT IT TO PLANO ISD? NON ITEM, BUT HOW THE YOU'RE PART OF THE GOVERNMENT, HOW YOU SPEND OUR MONEY AND THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT YOU TAKE OF THAT I THINK IS VERY GERMANE TO ALL OF US.

IF YOU COULD NARROW THE FOCUS OF YOUR COMMENT TO PLANO ISD,.I DON'T HAVE THERE'S NOT THAT MUCH MORE NARROWING I CAN DO SO I APOLOGIZE, BUT I'LL.

CONTINUE, PLEASE.

THE TWENTY TWO TRILLION THAT WAS SPENT YET OF THE 22 TRILLION THAT WAS SPENT, WHICH IS MORE MONEY THAN WAS SPENT ON ALL OF THE MILITARY WARS SINCE THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.

YET THE PROGRESS AGAINST POVERTY, AS MEASURED BY THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS BEEN MINIMAL, AS HAS BEEN THE PROGRESS ON EDUCATION AND IN TERMS OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S MAIN GOAL OF REDUCING THE CAUSES RATHER THAN THE MERE CONSEQUENCES OF POVERTY.

THE WAR ON POVERTY HAS FAILED COMPLETELY.

THE POINT IS THAT THE PROBLEMS IN THIS COUNTRY ARE GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION AND BUREAUCRATIC WASTE THAT'S EXPANDING AT AN EXPONENTIAL RATE THAT AFFECTS ALL OF US.

THAT ALSO PROBLEM IS TIED TO AN INCREDIBLE AND INCREASING WEALTH GAP, WHICH IS NURTURED BY THAT LARGE BUREAUCRACY.

AND THE THIRD LARGEST PROBLEM IS POOR PUBLIC EDUCATION, WHICH KEEPS PEOPLE FROM BEING AWARE OF IT.

THAT'S WHERE YOU COME IN.

LEADERSHIP IN MODERN EDUCATION NEEDS TO RECOGNIZE THESE FORCES IN GOVERNMENT AND EDUCATION AND STAND UP FOR WHAT MATTERS.

WHAT MATTERS IS TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO THINK, TEACHING PEOPLE TO HAVE PRINCIPLES, TEACHING THEM TO DRAW THEIR OWN CONCLUSIONS.

THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN EDUCATION WHO WANT TO CREATE A GENERATION OF FOLLOWERS, INSTITUTIONALIZING AND POLITICIZING EDUCATION SO THAT WE'RE GOING TO SUPPORT ABORTION OR BLACK LIVES MATTER OR THIS OR THAT.

BUT THEY'RE NOT REALLY EMPHASIZING TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO THINK THAT'S WHAT'S CRITICAL.

SO THERE'S A FAMOUS REVOLUTIONARY.

I THINK HE WAS A BLACK PANTHER, HE SAID.

IF YOU'RE NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM, YOU'RE PART OF, IF YOU'RE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

SO I THINK THAT YOU ALL OUGHT TO THINK OF YOURSELVES AS BEING PART OF THIS GOVERNMENT SYSTEM AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE ON BEHALF OF YOURSELVES AS TAXPAYERS AND ON BEHALF OF THE REST OF US.

THANK YOU.

OUR FINAL SPEAKER IS DONNA MYERS.

[00:40:02]

TOPIC IS GOVERNMENT OVERREACH.

HI, GOOD EVENING.

LAST MONTH, I CAME HERE AND SAT IN THE BACK AND I SAW PARENT AFTER PARENT COME FORWARD, AND THEY WERE IN SUCH FEAR FOR THEIR CHILDREN TALKING ABOUT HOW THEY HAD TO KEEP THEM AT HOME AND THEY COULDN'T LET THEM GO ANYWHERE OR DO ANYTHING.

AND THEN AFTER 10 DAYS OF SCHOOL BEING OPEN, THEY HAD TO BRING THEM BACK BECAUSE THERE WAS A THREAT OF COVID FROM SOMEBODY IN THE BUILDING.

AND THAT JUST I FELT SO COMPELLED TO COME AND JUST SPEAK BECAUSE IT'S VERY SADDENING TO ME TO HEAR THESE THINGS.

AND I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION OF WATCHING YOU ALL HEAR EVERYBODY.

AND I'M LIKE, ARE YOU ACTUALLY HEARING THESE PARENTS AND HOW THEY ARE EXPRESSING HOW THEY'RE LIVING IN FEAR AND ARE PLEADING WITH YOU TO FIX THE PROBLEM? UNFORTUNATELY, THEIR IGNORANCE OF BIG GOVERNMENT OVERREACH IS REPLACING THEIR FREEDOM OF PARENTAL CHOICE TO BEING CONTROLLED AND DICTATED TO HARMFUL GOVERNMENT MANDATES.

PARENTS, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT FINE ADVOCATE FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH.

YOU NEED TO HOLD THE SCHOOL BOARDS ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN'S SAFE ENVIRONMENT TO LEARN.

IT IS NOT THE SCHOOL BOARD'S JOB TO PARENT YOUR CHILDREN, BUT YOU ARE BEGGING THEM TO.

A SAFE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT IS NOT MASKING UP, DISTANCING AND UNNECESSARILY INJECTING YOUR HOUSEHOLD WITH THE VACCINE.

BUT YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THAT.

DON'T IGNORE THE REAL SCIENCE AT THE COST OF YOUR CHILD'S FUTURE AND POSSIBLY LIFE.

INSTEAD OF INSTILLING AND FORCING GOVERNING FROM A POSITION OF POWER, LOVE AND A SOUND MIND, YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO RULE WITH FEAR.

WHATEVER FAITH YOU HAVE NOW, THERE WILL BE A JUDGMENT DAY AND YOU WILL ANSWER TO THE CRIME OF PROMOTING FEAR AND DESTRUCTION.

I KNOW THE ANSWER.

I DO KNOW THE ANSWER TO FEAR, BUT IT'S NOT MORE GOVERNMENT.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU, IF THERE ARE NO OBJECTIONS FROM THE BOARD, WE WILL ADJOURN TO

[5. CLOSED SESSION ]

CLOSED SESSION AS AUTHORIZED UNDER THE TEXAS OPEN MEETINGS ACT FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES SECTIONS 551.071, 551.072 AND 551.129.

THE TIME IS 6:43 P.M.

ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5TH.

ALL RIGHT, THE BOARD WILL NOW RECONVENE IN OPEN SESSION TODAY'S TUESDAY,

[6. RECONVENE OPEN SESSION ]

OCTOBER 5TH 2021.

THE TIME IS 7:49 P.M..

ITEM SEVEN THE CONSENT AGENDA WAS MOVED UP ON THE AGENDA AND APPROVED PRIOR TO CLOSED SESSION, SO WE'LL NOW MOVE TO DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEM EIGHT POINT ONE.

[8.1. Adoption of a Resolution Regarding Investment Policy, Investment Strategies, Investment Training Providers and Investment Broker-Dealers ]

ADOPTION OF A RESOLUTION REGARDING INVESTMENT POLICY, INVESTMENT STRATEGIES, INVESTMENT TRAINING PROVIDERS AND INVESTMENT BROKER DEALERS.

RANDY? YES.

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT STOLLE.

AND SO HOPEFULLY THIS IS GOING TO COME UP ON THE SCREEN.

THERE WE GO.

SO WE DO HAVE THE ANNUAL INVESTMENT REPORT FOR YOUR REVIEW TONIGHT.

THIS IS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30 OF 2021.

I CAN GO AHEAD AND HIT THE HIGHLIGHT ON THIS, AND THAT IS INTEREST RATES WERE VERY LOW THIS YEAR AND EVEN WE THOUGHT LAST YEAR WAS LOW AND THEN THIS YEAR HAS BEEN MUCH LOWER.

SO WE'LL BE SHOWING YOU SOME DATA ON THAT.

IT WILL BE A LITTLE BIT DEPRESSING, TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, BUT SO YOU CAN SEE OUR INVESTMENTS.

SO WE HAD AT THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR, WE HAD ABOUT SIX HUNDRED AND SEVENTY MILLION DOLLARS INVESTED.

AND SO THAT IS GOING TO BE GENERAL FUND, PRIMARILY GENERAL FUND MONEY, DEBT SERVICE MONEY AND CONSTRUCTION OR BOND FUNDS THAT MAKE UP THAT NUMBER.

YOU CAN SEE A BREAKDOWN ON THE PIE CHART OVER IN THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE DIFFERENT INVESTMENT GROUPS THAT WERE INVESTED WITH.

AND SO TEXAS CLASS IS THE ONE THAT WE HAVE.

FORTY THREE PERCENT, TECH STAR TWENTY TWO PERCENT AND YOU SEE SOME OTHER INVESTMENT POOLS AND OTHER INVESTMENTS THERE.

IN THE UPPER RIGHT, YOU CAN SEE THE BREAKDOWN OF WHAT OF THE DIFFERENT SECURITY TYPES THAT WE HAD.

PRIMARILY, THOSE ARE IN WHAT WE CALL THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT POOLS, AND THAT IS ABOUT SEVENTY SEVEN PERCENT OF OUR INVESTMENTS.

DOWN IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT.

YOU CAN SEE THEY ARE VERY ALL HIGH RATED AS REQUIRED BY OUR INVESTMENT POLICY.

AND SO THAT'S A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT BREAKDOWNS.

SO HERE'S A GRAPH.

IF THIS ISN'T DEPRESSING, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS.

BUT SO WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT JANUARY OF 20, OUR THE RATES THAT WE WERE RECEIVING WERE BETWEEN ABOUT ONE POINT SIX AND 2.0.

YOU CAN SEE THAT DECLINE.

AND SO PLANO ISD IS THE PURPLE LINE.

SO WE ARE OUTPERFORMING THE THE SOME OF THE OTHERS AND EVEN TEX POOL.

BUT I MEAN, THE MARGINS ARE JUST SO SMALL, SO AND SO WE DID PULL UP RATES TODAY AND IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT A 0.05 PERCENT, NOT FIVE PERCENT, A 0.05 PERCENT IS A GOOD RATE

[00:45:08]

TODAY.

AND SO MOST OF OUR INVESTMENTS ARE IN THE 0.025 RANGE.

AND SO IT'S VERY, VERY LOW RATES THAT ON ALL OF OUR INVESTMENTS.

AND SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT QUESTIONS YOU'VE GOT THERE, I CAN JUST TELL YOU WE ARE WAITING FOR IT TO REBOUND.

HOPEFULLY IT WILL.

AT SOME POINT WE'RE STAYING VERY SHORT TERM.

THERE'S NO BENEFIT IN GOING OUT FOR.

I MEAN, WE'D TAKE A BASIS POINT RIGHT NOW WOULD BE AWESOME.

BUT I MEAN, THE MARGINS ARE JUST SO SMALL THAT IT'S REALLY NOT WORTH ANY RISK TO GO OUT LONG TERM.

SO WE'RE REALLY KEEPING EVERYTHING SHORT AND HOPING THAT THE MARKET TURNS AT SOME POINT AND THEN WE CAN CAPITALIZE ON ON THOSE INCREASING INTEREST RATES.

AS PART OF OUR INVESTMENT POLICY REVIEW.

WE DO HAVE TO REVIEW THE INVESTMENT TRAINING PROVIDERS.

THERE'S NO CHANGES IN THIS LIST.

SO THOSE OF US THAT ARE INVESTMENT OFFICERS HAVE TO RECEIVE ANNUAL TRAINING AND THESE ARE THE PROVIDERS THAT THE BOARD HAS PREVIOUSLY APPROVED FOR US TO UTILIZE FOR THAT TRAINING.

SO WE HAVE NO CHANGES THERE.

WE ALSO HAVE NO CHANGES IN OUR APPROVED BROKER DEALERS.

MUCH OF THIS THAT WE WERE BUYING ON OUR OWN COMMERCIAL PAPER AND THINGS LIKE THAT, WE'RE NOT BUYING MUCH OF IT ALL.

WE'RE KEEPING MOST ALL OF IT, JUST IN THE POOLS AND AGAIN, JUST FOR LIQUIDITY.

SO NO CHANGES TO OUR APPROVED BROKER LIST.

SO IN OUR ANNUAL INVESTMENT REPORT, WE DO HAVE TO REVIEW THE DIFFERENT POLICIES THAT WE HAVE.

AND SO THOSE ARE STATED HERE AS A HIGHLIGHT TO THIS OR OR A DOWN OR A MAYBE NOT A HIGHLIGHT.

SO LAST YEAR, OUR TOTAL INTEREST INCOME WAS ABOUT TEN POINT FIVE MILLION.

THIS LAST FISCAL YEAR WAS ONE POINT SEVEN.

JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, SO WE DID HAVE LESS MONEY INVESTED ON THE CAPITAL PROJECT SIDE BECAUSE WE'VE SPENT MORE THAT BOND MONEY DOWN AT THE SAME TIME.

AS YOU'LL RECALL IN THE GENERAL FUND, THOUGH, WE HAD ABOUT 180 MILLION FOR RECAPTURE THAT WE WERE PAYING STARTING IN FEBRUARY IN SEVEN EQUAL PAYMENTS.

WE HELD ALL THAT UNTIL AUGUST, SO WE HAD THAT FOR THE FULL YEAR.

SO WE ACTUALLY HAD MORE ON THE GENERAL FUND SIDE THAN IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR, BUT LESS ON THE CAPITAL PROJECTS.

BUT TOTAL INTEREST INCOME WAS, I MEAN, ALMOST 10 PERCENT WHAT IT WAS THE PRIOR YEAR.

SO THAT TELLS YOU, YOU KNOW, WHAT THE MARKETS HAVE DONE OVER THAT TIME PERIOD.

SO WE DO HAVE A RESOLUTION THAT BASICALLY SAYS THAT WE'VE REVIEWED THE POLICY, THE CDA LOCAL POLICY THAT'S ON INVESTMENTS AND THEN ALSO THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT ARE BROKER DEALERS, OUR INVESTMENT PROVIDERS.

AND SO WE'VE GOT THAT RESOLUTION FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

AND THAT IS REALLY IT.

THANKS, RANDY.

ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS HERE? WE DON'T HAVE TO READ THE RESOLUTION OUT LOUD, DO WE OR? YOU DO NOT.

ALL RIGHT.

HEARING NO QUESTIONS MAY I HAVE A MOTION? I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEE APPROVES THE ADOPTION OF THE RESOLUTION APPROVING INVESTMENT POLICY, INVESTMENT STRATEGIES, INVESTMENT TRAINING PROVIDERS AND INVESTMENT BROKER DEALERS.

SECOND.

I HAVE A MOTION BY ANGELA POWELL, SECOND BY CODY WEAVER THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES THE ADOPTION OF THE RESOLUTION APPROVING INVESTMENT POLICY, INVESTMENT STRATEGIES, INVESTMENT TRAINING PROVIDERS AND INVESTMENT BROKER DEALERS.

ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? HEARING NONE, WE WILL PROCEED TO VOTE ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.

MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY SEVEN ZERO.

[8.2. Approval of Board Advisory Committee Goals for the 2021 -2022 School Year ]

MOVING ALONG TO DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEM EIGHT POINT TWO IS THE APPROVAL OF OUR BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS FOR THE 21 22 SCHOOL YEAR, DR.

THERESA WILLIAMS PRESENTING.

THANK YOU.

OK.

I DON'T KNOW WHO'S DRIVING.

YOU GOT IT.

GREAT.

SO TONIGHT WE'RE BRINGING OUR 21 22 BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS.

I BELIEVE THAT IN JUNE, EACH DIVISION THE CHAIRS, OUR CTE GIFTED AND TALENTED SPECIAL ED , SHAC AND DIVERSITY COMMITTEE BROUGHT THEIR 2021 END OF YEAR REPORT AND THEN SOME PRELIMINARY GOALS.

BUT BEFORE WE DO THAT, SINCE ITS ANNUAL, WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME JUST TO COVER THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OUR BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES.

AND SO FIRST IS WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF OUR BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES? AND EACH OF THESE COMMITTEES THEY FUNCTION IN AN ADVISORY CAPACITY TO ADVISE, PROVIDE

[00:50:03]

FEEDBACK AND POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATIONS ON CERTAIN TOPICS TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

OUR ADVISORY COMMITTEES ARE NOT A DECISION MAKING BODY, BUT RATHER SERVE IN AN ADVISORY CAPACITY, AND THEY ARE ALLOWED TO THEN CREATE OTHER COMMITTEES OR SUBCOMMITTEES WITHIN EACH OF THE LARGER COMMITTEES.

SO WHAT HOW DO THEY OPERATE? IS THE NEXT QUESTION, AND THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OR THE SUPERINTENDENT MAY DIRECT ANY OF THE COMMITTEES TO STUDY A PARTICULAR TOPIC OR TO BRING FORWARD SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ON SPECIFIC ISSUES.

EACH OF THE COMMITTEES WORK BASED OFF OF THEIR ANNUAL GOALS, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE BRINGING HERE AND THAT DICTATES AND DETERMINES THE SCOPE OF WORK FOR THE YEAR.

EACH COMMITTEE IS CHAIRED BY A PLANO ISD STAFF MEMBER APPOINTED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND EACH COMMITTEE MEETS AT A MINIMUM OF THREE TIMES PER YEAR.

THEY ALSO WILL PROVIDE A SUMMARY OF THEIR COMMITTEE GOALS AND OUTCOMES AT THE END OF THE YEAR, SO WE'LL BE BRINGING THAT INFORMATION BACK.

SO WHAT IS THE BOARD'S RESPONSE TO ANY OF THE BOARD COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS? ANY OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT ARE PROVIDED BY THE COMMITTEE ARE THEN REFERRED TO THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND THEY MAY FOR FURTHER STUDY, OR THEY MAY BE INCORPORATED INTO THE DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE OR ANY OTHER PLAN AS APPROPRIATE.

AND THEN THE SUPERINTENDENT WILL REPORT ANY OF THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS BACK TO THE BOARD THROUGH THE DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT PLAN PROCESS.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO THE TEAM AND WE'LL HEAR FROM DR.

HASLEY AND THEN I BELIEVE DR.

ANDERSON AND DR.

GOBER.

THERESA BEFORE WE DO FOR POINT OF CLARIFICATION.

WHO SERVES ON THE COMMITTEE AND HOW ARE THOSE PEOPLE SELECTED? SO WE'LL GO THROUGH THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

THOSE ARE DICTATED BY POLICY.

AND SO THERE ARE COMMITTEE MEMBERS THAT ARE RECOMMENDED BY EACH BOARD MEMBER AS WELL AS OTHER PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ARE INTERESTED IN SERVING.

AND THEN THERE'S MORE INFORMATION ON THAT, I BELIEVE, ON ON OUR WEBSITE ALSO AND IN OUR POLICY.

SO THE POINT OF CLARIFICATION IS THESE ARE ALL MADE UP OF STAFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

THAT IS CORRECT.

SO WE ARE GETTING COMMUNITY INPUT THROUGH THESE COMMITTEES.

ABSOLUTELY.

THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.

SO WE HAVE SOME COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT WORK IN PLANO ISD, OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT LIVE IN PLANO ISD, AS WELL AS PARENTS AND STAFF MEMBERS.

I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAD THAT, THAT IT WAS WELL KNOWN THAT THIS IS MADE UP OF COMMUNITY PEOPLE.

ABSOLUTELY.

AND I WILL ALSO SAY THE CTE COMMITTEE HAS BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES FROM WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.

SO ONE FINAL THING I'M SORRY TO INTERRUPT YOUR PROGRAM, BUT ALSO ALONG THE SAME LINE OF THINKING WITH THE PUBLIC COMMENT THAT WE HAD TONIGHT, JUST AS A REMINDER TO THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHING US RIGHT NOW, THIS IS A BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

THE BOARD CONVENES THESE COMMITTEES TO RESEARCH REVIEW A CERTAIN TASK SPECIFIED BY THE BOARD.

WE ASK THESE COMMITTEES TO DO WORK, ALL WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SHAC.

WE ASK THESE COMMITTEES TO DO SPECIFIC WORK, REPORT BACK TO THE BOARD WHAT THE FINDINGS ARE IN THAT SPECIFIC WORK, AND THEN THE BOARD TAKES ACTION ALONG WITH THE ADMINISTRATION IF WE DESIRE TO.

AND SO THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT WE HAVE INPUT FROM THE COMMUNITY ON EVEN THE TOPICS, THOSE AREN'T REALLY COMMUNITY.

IT'S NOT A COMMUNITY TOPIC.

IT'S THE BOARD'S TOPIC THAT WE ARE INTERESTED IN, THAT WE WANT THE COMMUNITY TO THE BOARD UP THE THE COMMITTEES TO REVIEW AND THEN ADVISE US IN THAT REGARD.

AND I'M ONE MORE QUESTION HISTORICALLY, HOW LONG DO WE KNOW THAT THE DISTRICT HAS HAD? I MEAN, SHAC, I KNOW, IS REQUIRED BY THE STATE, BUT WE HAVE HAD AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, THEY HAVE EXISTED.

I WAS JUST WONDERING, IS THERE SOME BECAUSE I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT HAS JUST HAPPENED.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT THE DISTRICT HAS FELT VERY COMMITTED TO FOR A LONG TIME.

SO WE'VE HAD BOARD.

I CAN GO BACK AND LOOK, BUT I WANT TO SAY THAT WE HAVE BOARD ADVISORIES GOING ALL THE WAY BACK INTO THE EARLY NINETIES, MAYBE EVEN SLIGHTLY BEFORE THEN.

I CAN VERIFY THAT.

BUT BUT IT'S BEEN.

IT'S BEEN SEVERAL DECADES.

THAT'S THE THAT'S THE POINT.

THANK YOU.

AND I HAD ONE OTHER QUESTION.

JUST OBVIOUSLY, THERE'S A LOT OF LEGAL REQUIREMENTS WITH THE SHAC SUBCOMMITTEE OR ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

THE I THINK WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN HOW MANY PARENTS AND HOW MANY NON-PARENTS IN THE THAT PARTICULAR COMMITTEE.

DID WE CONFIRM THAT MORE THAN HALF ARE PARENTS? SO SHAC IS PRESCRIBED BY LAW AND I'LL DEFER TO DR.

ANDERSON.

IF NOT, WE WILL BRING THAT INFORMATION BACK TO YOU.

WE DON'T HAVE AND THERE WERE SOME LEGISLATIVE CHANGES THIS PAST YEAR TO SHAC.

[00:55:03]

AND SO THAT ONE IS GOVERNED BY LAW THAT DOES GIVE A EXACT PERCENTAGE OF THE BREAKDOWN BETWEEN STAFF AND COMMUNITY AND PARENTS.

BDF POLICY DOES HAVE A COMPOSITION OF WHO IS REQUIRED TO BE ON THE SHAC COMMITTEE.

SO IT'S LISTED IN THAT POLICY AND.

WE ADHERE TO ALL OF THAT.

ALL RIGHT, WELL, AT THIS TIME, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO THE TEAM DR.

HASLEY.

OKAY, THANK YOU.

SO THE FIRST THREE BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES FALL INTO THE AREA OF ACADEMIC SERVICES, AND EACH OF THE CHAIRPERSONS FOR EACH COMMITTEE MET WITH THE BOARD SUBCOMMITTEE FOR GUIDANCE ON THESE PROPOSED GOLD GOALS.

SO OUR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE IS CHAIRED BY KAREN BEEKMAN, OUR CTE DIRECTOR, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE DISPLAY AGAIN THE LIST OF MEMBERS, AND WE'RE GOING TO THANK THEM AHEAD OF TIME FOR THEIR WORK THIS COMING YEAR.

EACH COMMITTEE HAS SOME RETURNING MEMBERS, AS WELL AS SOME NEW MEMBERS.

SO THE PROPOSED GOALS FOR THE CTE COMMITTEE.

THE GOAL IS TO CONTINUE TO REVIEW PROGRAMS OF STUDY, BUT ALSO TO RESEARCH POTENTIAL INNOVATIVE CTE PROGRAMS BASED ON WORKFORCE NEEDS.

SO AS SARA MENTIONED, THIS COMMITTEE HAS A LOT OF BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE AS WELL, AND THEY ARE VERY ACTIVE IN PROVIDING INPUT FOR OUR CTE PROGRAM.

NEXT, WE HAVE OUR GIFTED AND TALENTED BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

THIS IS CHAIRED BY KEVIN MOORE, OUR DIRECTOR OF ADVANCED ACADEMICS.

AND HERE'S THE MEMBERSHIP FOR THIS YEAR.

AS YOU KNOW, YOU'VE APPROVED ALL THESE MEMBERS.

THIS GOAL, THIS COMMITTEE HAS TWO GOALS.

FIRST, TO EXPLORE BUSINESS, COMMUNITY AND HIGHER EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS TO ENRICH OUR PACE CURRICULUM WITH REAL WORLD INTERACTIONS, OPPORTUNITIES AND AUDIENCES.

THIS IS TO BRING THE REAL WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM MORE.

AND SECONDLY, TO INVESTIGATE RESOURCES TO EMPOWER OUR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO BE STRONGER, MORE WELL-INFORMED PARTNERS TO SUPPORT GIFTED EDUCATION.

CAN I MAKE A COMMENT ON THIS ONE REAL QUICK BEFORE YOU MOVE ON? I JUST, YOU KNOW, AND I LIKE THE SECOND BULLET IN PARTICULAR.

I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE A LOT OF PARENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO DID NOT WERE NOT EDUCATED IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THEIR PRIMARY EDUCATION, PEOPLE WHO WERE BORN ABROAD AND MOVED HERE FOR COLLEGE.

AND SO EMPOWERING PARENTS NOT ONLY WHO SORT OF UNDERSTAND GT [INAUDIBLE] EDUCATION BECAUSE THEY GREW UP AND WERE EDUCATED HERE IN THE U.S.

BUT UNDERSTAND, YOU KNOW, PACE AND GT EDUCATION, EVEN IF THEY GREW UP ABROAD.

I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT'S REALLY A CRITICAL COMMUNITY NEED AS AS PARENTS ARE TRYING TO NAVIGATE THIS JOURNEY FOR THEIR FOR THEIR GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILD.

RIGHT.

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE.

AND I THINK ALSO THE THE PARENTS THAT ARE FIRST GENERATION HERE THAT DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE WANTING THEIR KIDS TO GET THOSE EXPERIENCES AS WELL, BEING ABLE TO EMPOWER THEM IS IMPORTANT AS WELL.

AS A PARENT WHO DID GROW UP ABROAD AND I DID GET COMMUNICATION FROM PISD WHEN IT'S TIME WE MY KID ENTERED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

AND I ACTUALLY DID REFER MY CHILD TO BE TESTED.

SO ON THIS FRONT, I THINK WE HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS WHO ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, HAVE NO IDEA HOW THE EDUCATION SYSTEM WORKS HERE.

AND LIKE I TOLD MY BOARD MEMBERS, LIKE TODAY, YESTERDAY, IT'S THE FIRST TIME I KNOW HOMECOMING IS CALLED [INAUDIBLE] BECAUSE I GOT A MESSAGE FROM SCHOOL.

IT'S A HAPPY [INAUDIBLE].

I WAS LIKE, WHAT IS [INAUDIBLE]? IT'S LIKE HOME COOKED MEAL.

IT'S LIKE, YOU SEE, IT'S REALLY THINGS YOU WOULD NEVER EVEN IMAGINE, LIKE, WE REALLY DON'T KNOW.

AND BECAUSE WE DIDN'T GROW UP HERE.

SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE ANY COMMUNICATION FROM SCHOOLS.

YEAH.

WE DON'T CALL IT THAT IN FLORIDA WHERE I GREW UP.

SO I THINK THAT'S A TEXAS THING.

WELL, IS THAT A FOREIGN COUNTRY? OK, MOVING ON.

WE HAVE OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE, AND THIS IS CHAIRED BY ONE OF OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION DIRECTORS, BETHANY ROGERS.

AND HERE'S THE MEMBERSHIP FOR THIS COMING YEAR.

AND THIS COMMITTEE'S GOAL IS AGAIN BASED ON INCREASING POSITIVE OUTCOMES FOCUSED ON STRONG PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN SCHOOL AND HOME, AND THEY'RE FOCUSING ON DEVELOPING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS TO SUPPORT FAMILIES IN THE SCHOOL PROCESS.

THE COMMITTEE WILL WORK TO DEVELOP OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS IN THESE THREE MAIN AREAS.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS, SUPPORT IN THE COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY, AND INCREASE COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS.

KATRINA, ONE REAL QUICK COMMENT ON THAT ONE.

SO WHEN THE SUBCOMMITTEE MET, WE NOTICED THERE'S SOME OVERLAP BETWEEN THAT, THOSE GOALS AND THE GTE COMMITTEE GOALS, AND SO WE'RE HOPING THAT THERE CAN BE SOME SYNERGIES.

YES.

[01:00:01]

THE TERM THAT I LIKE TO USE IN FANCY FINANCE WORLD.

WE HAVE TAKEN THOSE NOTES BACK TO THE [INAUDIBLE] BE SHARING THAT.

THANK YOU.

OK.

THIS YEAR, I'M EXCITED TO FIRST INTRODUCE YOU TO THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS FROM THE DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE.

WE DID LEAVE OUT ONE GROUP THAT WE ALSO INCLUDE THIS YEAR AND THAT'S OUR STUDENTS.

WE HAVE THREE STUDENTS ON OUR DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE, ONE FROM EACH OF THE SENIOR HIGHS.

I DON'T KNOW IF WE HAVE ONE FROM THE ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL, BUT I KNOW WE HAVE ONE FROM EACH OF THE SENIOR HIGHS.

AND SO THESE FINE FOLKS WILL BE WORKING ON THESE TWO GOALS THE FIRST ONE TO ANALYZE ENROLLMENT OF UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATION AND ADVANCE ACADEMIC COURSES AND RESEARCH BASED PROVEN STRATEGIES TO INCREASE THE ENROLLMENT THEREOF.

THE SECOND GOAL IS TO EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES AND STRATEGIES TO CELEBRATE UNITY AND BELONGING IN PARTNERSHIPS WITH MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITIES SERVED BY OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THESE GOALS AND VERY MOTIVATED TO GET AFTER THEM.

DR. GOBER, I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT.

I BELIEVE THAT COMMITTEE IS VERY ACTIVE, AND I'VE HEARD THAT THEY WERE REALLY WANTING TO HAVE STUDENTS BE A PART OF THE CONVERSATION.

CORRECT.

SO I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO THE FOLKS AND HAVE THE STUDENTS ADD IT.

I THINK THAT'S GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WILL BE A REALLY GREAT PERSPECTIVE TO HAVE INCLUDED.

THANK YOU.

AND GO AHEAD.

ASK JUST A QUESTION.

IF A STUDENT IS INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF THIS COMMITTEE? DO THEY HAVE TO BE REFERRED APPOINTED? WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR A STUDENT TO BE IN THE COMMITTEE? WE ASKED EACH OF THE SENIOR HIGH PRINCIPALS TO NOMINATE A STUDENT THAT THEY THOUGHT WOULD BE GOOD FOR THIS COMMITTEE.

SO AND BOARD ONE OF THE STUDENT COMMITTEE MEMBERS, IS OUR FRIEND WHO BROUGHT US CUPCAKES, I BELIEVE AND HAS SPOKEN SEVERAL TIMES.

AND SO I'M NOT SAYING THE CUPCAKES ARE WHAT DID IT, [LAUGHTER] BUT CERTAINLY COMING OUT AND SPEAKING IN FRONT OF THE BOARD IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THAT YOU ARE WANT TO BE ACTIVE AND INVOLVED.

YOU ARE CORRECT.

YES.

GOOD DEAL.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? PERFECT.

OK, SO AS WE MENTIONED, THE STUDENT HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE IS REQUIRED BY TEXAS EDUCATION CODE AND WE ARE REQUIRED TO MEET FOUR TIMES A YEAR.

OUR WONDERFUL STAFF LIAISONS ARE MOLLY PIPAK, WHO IS OVER HEALTH AND P.E., AND THEN STACEY ANTELO, WHO IS WITH DISTRICT HEALTH SERVICES.

SO WE ARE VERY HAPPY THAT THEY ARE PARTNERED WITH US TO WORK ON THIS COMMITTEE, AND WE ARE ALSO VERY GRATEFUL TO EVERYONE.

AND THESE ARE ALL ACCORDING TO THAT BDF LEGAL POLICY.

SO WE'RE GRATEFUL TO THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO HELP US THIS YEAR.

WE DO HAVE SOME HEFTY GOALS FOR THIS YEAR.

THE FIRST ONE TO REVIEW AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING PHYSICAL EDUCATION, HEALTH, EDUCATION AND COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH CURRICULUM, INCLUDING A RECENT ADOPTION OF THE NEW STATE STANDARDS.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME REVISIONS AND SOME NEW ADOPTIONS OF TEKS FOR GRADES K THROUGH 12 IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION THIS YEAR, AND THERE ARE SOME TEKS REVISIONS FOR K SEVEN HEALTH, AS WELL AS SOME NEW TEKS AND REVISIONS FOR HEALTH CURRICULUM IN GRADES 8 THROUGH 12.

SO WE ARE ALSO GOING TO BE GOING THROUGH A TEXTBOOK ADOPTION PROCESS FOR K-12 HEALTH AND P.E.

TEXTBOOKS, AND SHAC WILL BE INSTRUMENTAL WITH HELPING PROVIDE SOME FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO THAT TEXTBOOK COMMITTEE.

OUR SECOND GOAL IS ONE THAT WE HAD HAD LAST YEAR AND KIND OF ENHANCED SO TO REVIEW AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING STUDENT AND STAFF WELLNESS, INCLUDING SOCIAL RECONNECTION.

THIS ADDITION TO THE GOAL INCLUDES STRATEGIES AROUND SOCIAL RECONNECTION FOR OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS.

THESE STRATEGIES ARE REALLY IMPORTANT IN THIS AREA BECAUSE OUR KIDS HAVE BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL AND IN LEARNING IN VERY ALTERNATIVE WAYS THROUGHOUT THIS PANDEMIC, SO WE FELT THAT IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF TO HAVE SOME STRATEGIES TO DEVELOP POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND PROMOTE BETTER INTERACTIONS WITH EACH OTHER.

TO NOTE, AND I MENTIONED THIS EARLIER, THERE HAVE BEEN SOME LEGISLATIVE UPDATES THAT NOW DO REQUIRE SHAC TO HAVE PUBLIC NOTIFICATION BEFORE ALL OF THEIR MEETINGS.

[01:05:05]

SO THIS NOTIFICATION IS GOING TO BE POSTED 72 HOURS IN ADVANCE, AND THIS MEETING HAS TO BE AUDIO AND VIDEO RECORDED AND POSTED ON OUR DISTRICT'S WEBSITE UNDER OUR SCHOOL HEALTH DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE WEBSITE.

OUR FIRST MEETING OF FOUR IS GOING TO BE ON OCTOBER 18TH, AND OUR STAFF LIAISONS MOLLY PIPAK AND STACEY ANTELO HAVE SURVEYED THIS COMMITTEE TO DETERMINE LIKE WHAT FORMAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO MEET IN, WHETHER THAT'S VIRTUAL ALL VIRTUAL, IN-PERSON OR A COMBINATION THEREOF.

AND OVER 50 PERCENT OF THIS COMMITTEE ASKED THAT THEY MEET VIRTUALLY.

SO WE ARE GOING TO HOLD ALL OF THE SHAC MEETINGS VIRTUALLY.

THEREFORE, THEY WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ZOOM.

THEY WILL BE RECORDED AND THEN POSTED ALONG WITH THE WRITTEN MINUTES AFTER EACH MEETING.

DR. BROCKMAN AND I CO-CHAIR THIS MEETING TOGETHER, AND I REALLY DO APPRECIATE HER PARTNERSHIP, BUT I AM ESPECIALLY GRATEFUL TO OUR STAFF LIAISONS WHO ARE REALLY THE ONES THAT DO MOST OF THE HEAVY LIFTING ON THIS COMMITTEE.

SO I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS.

I WAS GOING TO ASK ABOUT THE TEXTBOOK ADOPTION.

DO YOU HAVE A TIMELINE ON THAT? CODY.

YEAH, I'M SURE THAT THERE IS.

I DO NOT KNOW THE SPECIFIC DATES AND TIMES, BUT WE ARE FULLY AWARE THAT IT IS CRITICAL AND [INAUDIBLE] GETTING ON THAT.

AND I'M JUST CURIOUS IN TERMS OF LAST YEAR, I HAD SOME FUN LOOKING AT SOME TEXTBOOKS AND I'D BE INTERESTED IN TAKING A LOOK AT SOME MORE TEXTBOOKS THIS COMING YEAR AND MAYBE MAKING A HABIT OUT.

I'M GOING TO REMEMBER THAT.

PLEASE DO.

[LAUGHTER] SELENDA, I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.

SO WITH ALL, DO YOU HAVE SUBCOMMITTEES WITHIN THE COMMITTEE? OR BECAUSE I HEARD YOU SAID TEXTBOOK ADOPTION COMMITTEE.

SO IS THAT A SUBCOMMITTEE INSIDE THE COMMITTEE OR IT'S JUST.

THAT'S A SEPARATE COMMITTEE FROM SHAC.

HOWEVER, THAT TEXTBOOK COMMITTEE WILL BE WORKING WITH SHAC TO GET FEEDBACK AND HAVE THEM PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS AROUND THE FINAL TEXTBOOKS THAT THEY WANT TO ADOPT.

SO WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF GETTING SELECTED FOR THAT TEXTBOOK ADOPTION? THAT IS A FANTASTIC QUESTION.

KATRINA.

I'LL BE GLAD TO SHARE MORE INFORMATION ON THAT THROUGH BOARD UPDATE.

WE HAVE A PROCESS WHERE TEACHERS CAN VOLUNTEER TO DO THAT.

WE HAVE REPRESENTATION FROM ALL LEVELS AND FOR THE APPROPRIATE TEXTBOOK THAT'S COMING UP.

I CAN ALSO SHARE THE TIMELINE OF WHICH TEXTBOOKS WILL BE ADOPTED OVER THE NEXT COMING YEARS.

SO IT'S A DISTRICT WIDE EFFORT.

IS NOT.

YES OK.

THANK YOU.

ON THE SOCIAL RECONNECTION STRATEGIES AND TRAINING FOR SOCIAL RECONNECTION IS SOMETHING THAT EVERY MILITARY FAMILY IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH.

AND HAVING GONE THROUGH MULTIPLE OF MY HUSBAND'S DEPLOYMENTS AND THEN HAVING TO REMAKE THAT SOCIAL CONNECTION FROM THAT ASPECT, I CAN TELL YOU THAT THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT WORK AND I'M JUST VERY SUPPORTIVE AND VERY GLAD TO SEE THAT THAT HAS BEEN PUT AS A GOAL FOR THIS YEAR BECAUSE IT, YOU KNOW, IT CAN BE REALLY DIFFICULT WHEN YOU'RE TAKEN OUT OF A NORMAL YEAR OR YOU'RE ISOLATED OR YOU'RE AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE THAT YOU'RE USED TO BEING WITH AND HAVING, YOU KNOW, GONE THROUGH THIS KIND OF TRAINING AND THAT CONTEXT MULTIPLE TIMES THROUGH MY HUSBAND'S DEPLOYMENTS, IT'S VALUABLE.

SO THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

SO, LAUREN, DOES THE MILITARY HAVE A FORMAL PROCEDURE POLICY AROUND THAT? SO I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S DIFFERENT BY SERVICE, THE ARMY, WHEN THEY HAVE POST-DEPLOYMENT TRAINING, THEY HAVE LIKE A WHOLE LAUNDRY LIST OF STUFF THAT THEY HAVE TO DO.

AND, YOU KNOW, JUST CHECK IT RIGHT OFF.

TYPICALLY, FOR SPOUSES, IT'S USUALLY A LITTLE BIT MORE, I FEEL LIKE AD HOC.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, THE INSURANCE COMPANIES SOMETIMES WILL SEND JUST UPDATES OR IN THE MILITARY, THERE'S A THING CALLED A FAMILY READINESS GROUP, THE FRG, WHICH IS THE SPOUSES OF SOLDIERS, AND THEY WILL ORGANIZE THINGS AS UNITS ARE COMING BACK FROM DEPLOYMENT.

AGAIN, IT'S KIND OF LIKE A PTA, RIGHT? IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF A CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE WITH SOME STRUCTURE AROUND IT.

AND SO I'VE SORT OF HAD THIS, YOU KNOW, DIGITALLY, BUT FOR SOLDIERS, AT LEAST

[01:10:02]

IT IS DEFINITELY IN PERSON WHEN COMING BACK AND THERE ARE VERY THERE ARE GUIDELINES AROUND THAT.

SO IF WE DON'T HAVE SOMEBODY WHO'S FORMER MILITARY ON THAT COMMITTEE, THAT MIGHT BE A GREAT PLACE TO START FOR A.

PATRICK.

INITIAL PRESENTATION.

OH, PATRICK, YEAH.

I'M SORRY, I WAS AIRFORCE NOT MILITARY.

[LAUGHTER] WELL, THANK YOU ALL.

ANY OTHER FINAL QUESTIONS FOR ANYBODY.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK THE BOARD SUBCOMMITTEE, WHO SPENT TIME WORKING WITH EACH ONE OF THE COMMITTEES AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVES ON.

IF HAVING THESE GOALS EVOLVE AND BECOME PART OF THE FABRIC OF THE BOARD FOR THE YEAR, SO I APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT.

WELL, THESE BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEES ARE A REAL IMPORTANT PART OF THE BOARD'S THOUGHT PROCESS.

AND SO THE WORK THAT WE ASKED THEM TO DO IS IMPORTANT WORK, AND I'M GLAD THAT WE HAVE THESE FOLKS IN THESE CAPACITIES.

IT IS A VALUABLE PIECE OF INFORMATION FOR US.

OK, SO THIS IS AN ACTION ITEM.

SO MAY I HAVE A MOTION? I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES THE BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS FOR THE 2021 2022 SCHOOL YEAR AS PRESENTED AND I SECOND ANGELA, SO I HAVE A MOTION FROM NANCY HUMPHREY, A SECOND BY ANGELA POWELL, THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES THE BOARD ADVISORY COMMITTEE GOALS FOR THE 21 22 SCHOOL YEAR AS PRESENTED ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION.

HEARING NONE.

LET'S VOTE ALL IN FAVOR PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.

MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.

SEVEN ZERO.

OK, OUR FINAL REPORT IS AN UPDATE ON THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY ACADEMY FROM DR.

[9.1. Virtual Academy Update Presenter: Dr. Courtney Gober, Assistant Superintendent for Student, Family and Community Services ]

COURTNEY GOBER.

DR. GOBER.

I'M NOT GOING TO READ YOUR TITLE.

I DID THAT ONCE ALREADY.

[LAUGHTER] THAT'S FINE.

WELL, GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.

WE ARE EXCITED TO SHOW OFF THE WORK OF MANY PEOPLE AROUND THIS DISTRICT AND CERTAINLY IN THIS ROOM TONIGHT TO PUT TOGETHER A VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

AND I'M GOING TO ASK MS. KATIE FLORES TO JOIN ME AT THE PODIUM THERE AND SEE AND I WILL WORK THROUGH THIS.

KATIE IS OUR INTERIM COORDINATOR FOR THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND STEPPED INTO A VERY, VERY BIG SET OF SHOES AND THE SHOES DIDN'T EXIST.

BUT WHEN WE FOUND THEM, THEY WERE REALLY BIG.

AND SHE'S BEEN DOING A FANTASTIC JOB, SO I'M GOING TO DO SOME OF THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND THEN I'LL TURN SOME OF THE FUN STUFF OVER TO MS. FLORES.

LET ME JUST REMIND EVERYONE THAT YOU KNOW THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY OR I SHOULD SAY VIRTUAL LEARNING WAS A DISTRICT PRIORITY FOR THIS DISTRICT.

WE HAD IT AS A LEGISLATIVE PRIORITY, AND WE REALLY WERE HOPING THAT THE STATE WOULD HAVE PASSED SOME LEGISLATION THAT WOULD HAVE ALLOWED US TO DO THIS PLAN FOR THIS AND REALLY LAUNCH IT FROM DAY ONE.

BUT THAT DID NOT HAPPEN.

AND SO IN THE SECOND SPECIAL SESSION IS WHEN IT CAME UP AGAIN AND PASSED BOTH HOUSES.

I BELIEVE IT WAS AUGUST 30TH.

AND ON AUGUST 30TH, BOTH HOUSES PASSED IT, AND THEN IT WENT TO THE GOVERNOR'S DESK, WHERE IT SAT UNTIL SEPTEMBER 9TH.

THAT'S NOT ON THESE SLIDES.

I JUST WANT TO BRING US ALL UP TO SPEED ON SORT OF THAT HISTORY SO THAT WE ALL REMEMBER THAT WE REALLY DIDN'T GET OFFICIAL AUTHORIZATION FROM THE STATE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 9TH.

WE STARTED PLANNING ONCE WE REALIZED IT WAS STARTING TO GET SOME MOMENTUM.

AND THE SECOND SPECIAL SESSION, WE TOOK OUT SOME OF OUR PLANS FROM LAST YEAR THAT WE'VE ALREADY STARTED AND WE STARTED TO WORK ON WHAT WE COULD FEASIBLY DO WITH FIDELITY THIS SCHOOL YEAR IN MID-AUGUST.

AND SO THIS IS IT.

SO SENATE BILL 15 IS THE BILL THAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

IT PASSED, SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR, AND IT HAS CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS AND I'M NOT GOING TO READ ALL OF THESE BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE, YOU KNOW, WE EXCEED WELL AND ABOVE.

THE ONE IMPORTANT ONE IS THAT ANY DISTRICT OFFERING VIRTUAL LEARNING CAN'T HAVE 10 PERCENT OR MORE OF THEIR OVERALL ENROLLMENT.

SO WE'RE NOT NEAR THAT.

WE'RE ABOUT MAYBE ONE PERCENT.

I'M SORRY, NOT ONE PERCENT, TWO PERCENT OF OUR ENROLLMENT.

WE CANNOT.

THIS IS IMPORTANT.

WE COULD NOT IN ANY DISTRICT CANNOT FORCE OR COERCE A TEACHER TO TEACH IN A VIRTUAL SETTING.

THEY HAVE TO CHOOSE TO DO SO.

AND SO THAT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE IF WE COULD EASILY JUST MOVE PEOPLE AROUND AND REASSIGN THEM AS WE WANT IT TO, IT WOULD HAVE MADE THINGS A LOT EASIER.

BUT THAT WAS NOT A POSSIBILITY.

AND THAT'S GOOD.

THAT'S GOOD FOR TEACHERS.

WE HAVE TO INCLUDE IN A VIRTUAL PLAN FOUR HOURS OF LEARNING FROM STUDENTS, SO STUDENTS

[01:15:01]

HAVE TO BE ENGAGED IN LEARNING FOUR HOURS A DAY, AND WE HAVE TO SHOW THAT IN OUR PLAN.

AND THE BILL THAT WAS PASSED IN THE BILL 15 IS IN EFFECT UNTIL THE END OF NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

SO WE'RE GOOD FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR AND NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

AND SO THE STATE WILL PROVIDE ADA FUNDING IF STUDENTS MEET CERTAIN CRITERIA AND FIRST ONLY GRADES K THROUGH 12.

AND I AM GOING TO HIGHLIGHT THAT BECAUSE WE HAD A LOT OF PRE-K PARENTS INQUIRE AS TO WHY WE ARE NOT OFFERING PRE-K.

AND THE REASON IS SIMPLE THE STATE IS ONLY PROVIDING FUNDING FOR K THROUGH 12.

AND QUITE FRANKLY, WE CAN'T AFFORD TO GO WITHOUT THAT.

STUDENTS HAVE TO BE ON GRADE LEVEL AND THE STATE SAYS YOU'RE ON GRADE LEVEL IF YOU PASSED ALL YOUR STAAR, IF YOU WEREN'T RETAINED, THAT IS, YOU HAD TO REPEAT A GRADE AND YOU HAD TO HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE.

YOU COULD NOT HAVE MISSED MORE THAN 10 PERCENT ATTENDANCE FROM THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR.

ANY STUDENT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION OR RECEIVING THOSE SERVICES HAS TO HAVE THE RECOMMENDATION OF THEIR ARD COMMITTEE TO GO TO A VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

SO THOSE WERE THE STATE REQUIREMENTS.

WE PRETTY MUCH ADOPTED ALL OF THOSE AS A DISTRICT.

AND SO WE.

CAN I ASK A QUESTION, DR.

GOBER, BEFORE YOU MOVE ON FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION.

SO THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ARD COMMITTEE MAKING THE RECOMMENDATION AND THE PARENT REQUESTING THAT SO IS THIS SOMETHING THAT THE PARENT IS INVOLVED IN THAT DECISION THROUGH THE ARD COMMITTEE TO IF THE PARENT BELIEVES THAT THAT IS AN OPTION OR WHAT'S SORT OF A SUBTLETY THERE IN TERMS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS? YES.

SO THE PARENT WOULD REQUEST TO BE IN THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND THEN THAT WOULD TRIGGER IN OUR COMMITTEE.

AND THE PARENT IS IN THEIR STUDENTS ARD MEETING.

A PARENT IS A VERY IMPORTANT PERSON OF THE ARD MEETING AND SO IS THE STUDENT.

SO OUR TIMELINE WE OPENED UP ENROLLMENT FOR THIS VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND ON SEPTEMBER 1ST AND WE KEPT IT OPEN OVER.

THAT WAS OUR THREE DAY WEEKEND.

WE KEPT IT OPEN OVER THE WEEKEND.

WE CLOSED IT ON THAT SUNDAY.

AND AT THAT TIME, WE HAD 1600 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

WHEN SCHOOL CAME BACK ON THAT TUESDAY, WE HAD THAT MONDAY OFF THAT ENTIRE WEEK, OUR PRINCIPALS WERE INUNDATED WITH EMAILS AND PARENTS REQUEST ASKING THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY DIDN'T KNOW THE DEADLINE HAD COME.

PLEASE MAKE AN EXCEPTION.

WELL, THAT HAPPENED HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF TIMES.

SO TO RELIEVE OUR PRINCIPALS, WE OPENED THE WINDOW BACK UP.

WE HAD FULL INTENTIONS OF KEEPING THE WINDOW OPEN UNTIL SEPTEMBER 16TH, BUT ON SEPTEMBER 14TH WE REALIZED WE HAD AN ISSUE AND THE ISSUE WAS THIS.

ONCE WE HAD THE INITIAL ENROLLMENT OF 1600 STUDENTS, WE MADE DECISIONS AS A DISTRICT TO MOVE STAFF.

SO, FOR EXAMPLE, THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE IF 30 THIRD GRADE STUDENTS FROM WHATEVER ELEMENTARY SELECTED VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

WELL WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A THIRD GRADE TEACHER OPEN, CORRECT? AND SO DR.

BROCKMAN AND HER TEAM WORKED FIERCELY ALL THAT WEEK TO MAKE ALL THE NECESSARY REASSIGNMENTS AND MOVING KIDS AS WELL.

YOU'RE MOVING TEACHERS AND YOU'RE REASSIGNING KIDS TO NEW TEACHERS THAT REMAINED ON THE CAMPUS.

AND SO FROM THAT, AND REMEMBER, WE COULDN'T FORCE TEACHERS.

SO FROM THAT, WE OBTAINED A STAFF FOR THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

WE ASSIGN THEM, CODED THEM TO A NEW CAMPUS AND SO ON AND SO FORTH.

SO ON SEPTEMBER 14TH, WE REALIZED WE HAD A LOT OF PARENTS WANTING TO DROP OR WITHDRAW THEIR ENROLLMENT FROM THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

THE PROBLEM WAS THIS THERE WAS NO TEACHER FOR THEM TO GO BACK TO BECAUSE REMEMBER, WE TOOK THAT TEACHER AND REASSIGNED THEM EITHER TO THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY, OR TO ANOTHER CAMPUS.

AND SO THAT'S WHEN WE HAD TO STOP IT EARLY.

AND THAT IS WHY WE NO LONGER ALLOW ANY MORE WITHDRAWALS.

WHEN THE PARENTS SIGNED UP, THEY WERE GIVEN MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SEE THAT THIS WAS A COMMITMENT FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

I'M POINTING THAT OUT BECAUSE WE'RE SORT OF AT THE END OF IT, BUT WE STILL HAVE A FEW PEOPLE THAT ARE A LITTLE UPSET ABOUT THAT.

ANYWAYS, WE STARTED INSTRUCTION ON SEPTEMBER 12TH AND THROUGH THAT WE

[01:20:03]

WERE IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING A LEARNING PLATFORM.

SO THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12TH, WE HAD ALL THE STUDENTS SIGN IN GOOGLE CLASSROOMS AND MEETING THEIR TEACHERS.

IT WAS A GREAT TRANSITIONAL WEEK IN TERMS OF JUST SOCIALIZATION AND GETTING THE KIDS ACCLIMATED TO THE CLASSROOM LEARNING AGAIN, BECAUSE MOST OF THESE KIDS WERE TVO KIDS OR THE PARENT LED TEMPORARY VIRTUAL OPTION STUDENTS.

AND THEN WE PURCHASED A LEARNING ONLINE LEARNING PLATFORM CALLED EDGENUITY.

AND WE STARTED THAT PROGRAM LAST WEEK, AND I WILL SHOW YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.

SO BEFORE YOU MOVE ON, DR.

GOBER, YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT TEACHERS AND MOVING THE TEACHERS AROUND AN THE STAFF PLACEMENT.

WAS THERE ADEQUATE INTEREST FROM ENOUGH TEACHERS TO ADEQUATELY STAFF VIRTUAL ACADEMY FROM WITHIN THE DISTRICT? AND IS THERE ROOM TO GROW IF THERE IS INCREASED INTEREST IN IN THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY IN THE FUTURE? SO THERE WAS ADEQUATE INTEREST FOR STAFFING THE PROGRAM THIS YEAR.

WE WILL HANDLE THE STAFFING PIECE A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY NEXT YEAR BECAUSE WE WILL GO INTO THE YEAR WITH A VIRTUAL ACADEMY, SO IT'LL LOOK DIFFERENT.

CAN I ASK A QUESTION, ARE TEACHERS TEACHING VIRTUALLY ARE THEY IN ONE BUILDING RIGHT NOW, SO THEY'RE NOT IN SEPARATE DIFFERENT BUILDINGS? NO, THEY'RE NOT IN ONE BUILDING.

WE HAVE THEM ACTUALLY IN FOUR DIFFERENT BUILDINGS AND THEY'RE IN SPECIFICALLY BETHANY, SKAGGS, SCHIMELPFENIG AND VINES.

OK.

THOSE ARE CAMPUSES THAT HAD EXTRA ROOM OR VACATED CLASSROOMS. OK, THANK YOU.

A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT THE PARENT LED THAT WE HAD BEFORE WE HAD THIS OPTION, WE HAD OVER TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS IN THAT.

IS THAT ACCURATE? YES, A LITTLE OVER.

AND SO I KNOW I DON'T WANT TO SKIP AHEAD, BUT OBVIOUSLY WE HAVE FAR LESS THAN THAT, THAT HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE THE VIRTUAL OPTION FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, CORRECT.

AS A FRIDAY, WE HAD ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN.

SO LESS THAN HALF.

YES.

CAN I MAKE ONE OTHER POINT? SO JUST AS A REMINDER, EVERY YEAR AFTER LABOR DAY, WE HAVE TO DO SOME BALANCING WITH ENROLLMENT, AND SO SOME OF THE BALANCING THAT OCCURRED WOULD HAVE OCCURRED ANYWAY WITH OR WITHOUT VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

WHAT THE HR TEAM DID WAS TO TRY TO.

THEY HANDLED BOTH PROCESSES AT THE SAME TIME INSTEAD OF BALANCING CLASSES AND THEN TURNING AROUND AND MAKING OTHER SHIFTS FOR VIRTUAL ACADEMY, IT HAPPENED ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

GOOD DEAL, SO I WILL SHOW YOU SORT OF THE EXPERIENCE OR GIVE YOU A LITTLE TASTE OF THE EXPERIENCE FROM EACH PERSPECTIVE, A STUDENT, PARENTS AND TEACHERS, OUR STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE BE WORKING ON AGE APPROPRIATE ENGAGING LESSONS WITH ACCESS TO LEARNING TOOLS, INCLUDING TEXT TO SPEECH, AUDIO AND TRANSLATION DICTIONARIES AND VIDEOS.

AND EACH WEEK THEY WILL GET A LIVE SYNCHRONOUS INSTRUCTION.

AND I'LL GIVE YOU I'LL SHOW YOU IN A COUPLE OF SLIDES HERE A SAMPLE SCHEDULE.

OUR PARENTS WILL HAVE FULL ACCESS TO EVERYTHING THAT THEIR CHILD EXPERIENCES, THE CURRICULUM, THE LESSONS, THE GRADE BOOK.

THEY'LL EVEN HAVE A TOOL TO DIRECTLY COMMUNICATE WITH THE TEACHER.

AND SO THE PARENTS DO CONTINUE TO SERVE AS LEARNING COACHES.

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, A KINDERGARTNER CAN'T JUST CUT ON THE COMPUTER AND GO AT IT, SO THEIR PARENTS STILL HAS TO SORT OF HELP THEM ALONG.

AND SO OUR PARENTS DID RECEIVE TRAINING.

WE TRAINED OUR PARENTS FIRST.

WE TRAINED THE PARENTS BEFORE WE TRAINED OUR STUDENTS.

AND SO THE PARENTS RECEIVED TRAINING AND WE'LL DO SOME UPDATED TRAINING THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR FOR THEM AND WITH THEM.

AND SO THEY'RE LEARNING THE TOOL AS WELL AS OUR STUDENTS.

OUR TEACHERS HAVE FULL ACCESS TO CUSTOMIZE AND DO WHAT THEY NEED TO DO FOR THIS TO THE CURRICULUM TO BRING IT UP TO THE STANDARD THAT WE HAVE IN PLANO ISD.

AND SO THEY'RE VIGOROUSLY WORKING ON THAT, ESPECIALLY FOR THIS UPCOMING SECOND NINE WEEKS.

THEY HAVE A VERY TEACHER FRIENDLY GRADING TOOL, CURRICULUM MAPS, COMMUNICATION TOOL.

THEY CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THE WHOLE CLASS RIGHT THERE IN THAT LEARNING PLATFORM THAT CAN COMMUNICATE WITH ALL PARENTS, SOME PARENTS, THEY CAN GROUP THEIR KIDS, THEY CAN DO A TON OF DIFFERENT THINGS AND THEN THEY HAVE ACCESS TO SOMETHING CALLED MYPATH.

REALLY, FOR THE ELEMENTARY KIDS, IT'S CALLED PATHBLAZER.

WHAT THAT DOES IS IT TAKES THE STUDENTS MAP SCORES AND WE INPUT THOSE MAP SCORES

[01:25:02]

INTO THIS PROGRAM PATHBLAZER AND THIS PROGRAM DESIGNS INDIVIDUALIZED LESSONS TO EACH STUDENT, ACCORDING TO HOW THEY PERFORMED ON MAPS.

SO IF I'LL JUST USE AN EXAMPLE OF A THIRD GRADER, IF I'M A THIRD GRADER AND I TOOK THIS TEST AND IT SHOWED THAT I STILL HAD SOME GAPS IN MY SECOND GRADE CONTENT PATHBLAZER IS GOING TO GO BACK DOWN TO SECOND GRADE AND HELP YOU RELEARN AND MASTER THOSE SECOND GRADE MATERIAL, BRING YOU BACK UP TO THIRD GRADE AND THEN TRY TO PUSH YOU.

TRY TO PUSH YOU AS HIGH AS YOU, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN GO.

AND SO OUR STUDENTS WILL BE EXPERIENCING THAT FOR READING AND THEN DREAMBOX FOR MATH, WHICH DOES THE SAME THING.

COURTNEY, BEFORE YOU HIT THE NEXT ONE, WOULD THE STUDENTS GO INTO THE SCHOOL TO TAKE THE MAP TESTING? WE HAD SOME STUDENTS COME IN AND SOME STUDENTS COULD TAKE IT AT HOME.

OKAY.

LIKE KINDERGARTNERS AND FIRST GRADERS, I BELIEVE WE KEPT THEM AT HOME.

OK, THANK YOU.

THIS IS A SAMPLE SCHEDULE FOR A K THROUGH THIRD GRADER.

SO THIS EXAMPLE WOULD HAVE A KID WITH SYNCHRONOUS LEARNING TIME THAT'S LIVE FACE TO FACE LEARNING TIME EVERY DAY AT EIGHT O'CLOCK.

SO ON HIS OR HER MONDAY, THEY WOULD HAVE A READING OR WRITING, READING AND WRITING CLASS ON A TUESDAY AT EIGHT O'CLOCK, THEY WOULD HAVE A MATH CLASS, WEDNESDAY SCIENCE AND THURSDAY SOCIAL STUDIES.

ALL VIRTUAL ACADEMY STUDENTS TAKE THEIR ELECTIVES ON FRIDAY.

THEY HAVE ART, MUSIC AND P.E.

AND SO THIS IS JUST A ONE SUBSET OF THE K THROUGH THREE GRADE SAMPLES.

BECAUSE ANOTHER STUDENT MIGHT HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF SCHEDULE, BUT THEIR LIVE FACE TO FACE SYNCHRONOUS TIME MIGHT BE NINE O'CLOCK, OR IT MIGHT BE 10:30 OR ANY OF THOSE TIMES THAT YOU SEE LISTED RIGHT THERE.

SO BUT EVERY STUDENT IS HAVING SYNCHRONOUS TIME EVERY DAY WITH THEIR TEACHERS IN A CORE CONTENT AREA THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.

FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE, SAME TYPE OF SCHEDULE, ALTHOUGH THEY GET A LITTLE BIT MORE SYNCHRONOUS TIME, THEY'LL GET READING AND WRITING TWO DAYS A WEEK AND THEN MATH TWO DAYS A WEEK.

SAME THING FOR SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES, AND THOSE ARE THE SECOND THEY HAVE SORT OF TWO BLOCKS OF SYNCHRONOUS TIME, ONE FOR READING AND WRITING AND MATH, ONE FOR SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE.

BUT OTHER THAT IT'S THE SAME TYPE OF SCHEDULE.

AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WE SORT OF MAP OUT A STUDENT'S DAY LIKE WE EXPLAINED THAT IF YOU SORT OF WORK YOUR DAY IN THIS WAY, YOU KNOW, YOU'LL STAY ON TOP OF ALL YOUR STUDIES AND THIS IS WHAT THE STATE SAYS YOU HAVE TO SHOW IN YOUR SCHEDULE, IN YOUR PLAN FOUR HOURS OF LEARNING AND THIS MORE THAN EXCEEDS THAT.

NEXT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER FOR SOME FUN STUFF ABOUT WHAT IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE, AND MS. FLORES WILL WALK US THROUGH THAT AND GIVE US A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR WEBSITE.

YES, SO YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE MS. BARNHILL HERE IS ONE OF OUR THIRD GRADE TEACHERS.

AND SO WE KIND OF TOOK SOME PICTURES FROM IF YOU WALKED INTO THEIR CLASSROOM VERSUS FROM THE TEACHER'S PERSPECTIVE, WHICH IS WHAT THIS MS. [INAUDIBLE] ONE OF OUR KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS, WHAT SHE'S SEEING AS SHE'S TEACHING.

AND YOU CAN SEE THESE AMAZING, THIS AMAZING TECHNOLOGY THAT WE ARE SO GRATEFUL TO HAVE IS CALLED WE'RE CALLING IT A CREATION STATION.

WE'RE REALLY KIND OF WANTING TO GET INTO IT AND LET THE TEACHERS, YOU KNOW, MAYBE CREATE A BOOK CHARACTER OUT OF IT AND LET THE KIDS REALLY GET INTO IT.

BUT WHAT IT ALLOWS THE TEACHERS TO DO IS, OF COURSE, THIS SMALLER MONITOR YOU CAN SEE THEY SEE THEMSELVES, SO THEY'RE SEEING WHAT THE STUDENTS ARE SEEING.

AND THEN ON ONE OF THE LARGER SCREENS, THEY'RE SEEING WHAT THEY'RE PRESENTING AND THEN ON THE OTHER SCREEN, THEY'RE ABLE TO SEE ALL OF THEIR KIDS.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, SO I HAD ONE MS. BENNETT IS ONE OF OUR SECOND GRADE TEACHERS, AND SHE TOLD ME TODAY THAT THEY DID BREAKOUT ROOMS WITH NO PROBLEM.

AND SHE WAS EXCITED.

THE KAHOOT WORKED.

AND SO WE'RE ALL LEARNING AND GROWING AS WE EVERY SINGLE DAY.

IT'S BEEN REALLY AMAZING FOR THE KIDS AND THE TEACHERS.

SO WE'RE EXCITED FOR THESE AND THIS PROVIDES JUST A REALLY GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE AGAIN FOR THE TEACHERS, MYSELF AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, OUR STUDENTS.

SO THE TEACHERS EACH DAY HAVE THE GRADE LEVEL PROVIDES AT LEAST ONE, A 30 MINUTE SET OF OFFICE HOURS WHERE YOU CAN DO CONFERENCES, TUTORING THINGS LIKE THAT.

AND WE REALLY WANT IT TO BE THE PICTURE OF WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL,

[01:30:04]

WHEN YOUR KIDS, YOU KNOW, COME IN AND MAYBE THEY JUST NEED SOME HELP ON WORK, MAYBE THEY NEED TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING AND THEN A FLEXIBLE ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES.

SO THE STATE SAYS THAT ATTENDANCE IS ENGAGEMENT KIND OF LIKE WE DID WITH SCHOOL AT HOME LAST YEAR.

SO IF THEY ATTEND THE SYNCHRONOUS LESSON? AWESOME.

BUT WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT, FOR WHATEVER REASON, MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND THAT DAY, BUT MAYBE THEY ARE ENGAGED IN THEIR EDGENUITY OR PATHBLAZERS.

SO THOSE WILL ALSO BE COUNTED PRESENT.

AND THEN THE TEACHERS, LIKE DR.

GOBER TALKED ABOUT HAVE INTEGRATED THE EDGENUITY, PATHBLAZER INTO THEIR LESSONS, AND THOSE WILL PROVIDE THOSE INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PATHS BASED ON THE STUDENTS MAP RESULTS.

SO LAST WEEK, WE KIND OF JUST WORKED OFF OF EDGENUITY.

THIS WEEK, WE ADDED A WEEK AT A GLANCE TO GIVE THE STUDENTS JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE CUSTOMIZATION THAN WHAT EDGENUITY PROVIDES IN THEIR PACING GUIDE.

AND SO WE ADDED A WEEK AT A GLANCE OF THIS IS WHAT WE EXPECT YOU TO DO.

THIS IS THE GRADING THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT TO DO EACH DAY.

AND THEN, OF COURSE, AGAIN TO ALLOW SOME FLEXIBILITY WITH SCHEDULES BY THE END OF THE WEEK.

THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE DONE.

AND THEN NEXT WEEK, THE STUDENTS WILL SEE THE ADDITION OF THE PATHBLAZER.

SO WHEN WE DISCUSSED WITH THE PATHBLAZER YOU KNOW A RECOMMENDATION OF, HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD STUDENTS BE SPENDING, YOU KNOW, IT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN IF THEY'RE ON A CAMPUS SPENDING TIME ON PATHBLAZER.

SO WE'RE REALLY GOING TO LOOK AT IT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES VERSUS AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT.

AND AGAIN, REALLY INDIVIDUALIZED.

AND MY QUESTION TO PATHBLAZER WAS, YOU KNOW, IS THERE AN END? AND THE ANSWER WAS NO.

AND THEY EVEN TODAY SAID, WELL, WOULDN'T IT BE EASIER IF YOU JUST STARTED THEM ALL AT THE SAME GRADE LEVEL? NO, NO.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE DO NOT WANT TO DO.

AND SO WE REALLY WANT TO CONTINUE TO CREATE THIS INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

AND YOU KNOW, I HEARD WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT DR.

ANDERSON'S SUBCOMMITTEE AND THE SOCIALIZATION.

AND SO THE TEACHERS ARE REALLY WORKING TO ADD IN SOME SEL.

AND THE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON THIS WEEK WAS ON CULTURE.

SO, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE SYNCHRONOUS LESSON DOESN'T HAVE TO NECESSARILY BE ABOUT CULTURE, IT CAN BE ABOUT SOCIALIZATION AND OR SOCIAL INTERACTION AND HOW WE CAN BUILD CULTURE AND DIVERSITY AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

SO WE'RE REALLY WORKING, YOU KNOW, AS MUCH AS WE CAN.

AND AGAIN, WE'LL CONTINUE TO LEARN RIGHT ALONG WITH THE STUDENTS AND CREATE SOME DIFFERENT, LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR OUR KIDDOS.

CAN I ASK A QUICK QUESTION, PLEASE DO ON THAT PATHBLAZER? I THINK THAT'S REALLY AMAZING WHAT THE TOOL IS BECAUSE IT ALIGNS WHAT THE DEFICIENCIES ARE IDENTIFIED IN THE MAP AND HELPS ALIGN THE CURRICULUM TO SUPPORT THAT INDIVIDUAL NEED.

DO WE HAVE A TOOL THAT WE'RE USING ON CAMPUSES AS WELL THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE VIRTUAL.

YES MA'AM SO PATHBLAZER IS ACTUALLY USED ON CAMPUS.

PERFECT.

AND IT CAN BE FOR INTERVENTION TO CLOSE GAPS AND IT CAN BE FOR EXTENSION.

SO IT'S REALLY A DIFFERENTIATION TOOL SO IT CAN BE INTERVENTION, CLOSING GAPS AND THEN EXTENSION TO, YOU KNOW, A THIRD GRADER CAN BE WORKING AT A FIFTH GRADER LEVEL.

THANK YOU.

SO COMING SOON, WE'RE VERY EXCITED THAT STUDENTS WILL ALL RECEIVE A NEW CHROMEBOOK AND THEN AN EDGENUITY WORKBOOK.

WE, OF COURSE, HAVE THE CAMMY EXTENSION ON THE CHROMEBOOK SO THEY CAN BE DOING THE WORKSHEETS.

BUT A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS WANT IT IN HAND, AND THERE'S SOME CUTTING PAGES AND THINGS FOR THE LITTLER ONES.

SO WE'RE EXCITED TO DISTRIBUTE THAT FROM RIGHT NEXT DOOR AT VINES.

SO MY LARGE NEW ROOM IS GOING TO BE FILLED WITH CHROMEBOOKS AND WORKBOOKS THAT WE'LL BE EXCITED TO GET TO SEE OUR STUDENTS AGAIN IN A, YOU KNOW, FACE TO FACE WHEN THEY COME, GET THOSE.

HOPEFULLY SOON WE'LL BE HIRING A COUNSELOR, ATTENDANCE CLERKS AND AN ASSISTANT COORDINATOR.

SO I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

WE'LL CONTINUE TO CUSTOMIZE THE CURRICULUM FOR OUR STUDENTS.

AND YOU KNOW, THE MORE WE LEARN AND THE MORE FEEDBACK WE GET FROM OUR STUDENTS, THE BETTER WE'RE ABLE TO MAKE IT.

SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

WE'LL BEGIN USING THE PATHBLAZER AND MYPATH AND THEN WE'RE CONTINUING TO ADJUST THE ART, MUSIC AND PE, THE AMP'D PROGRAMS. INSTRUCTION ON FRIDAYS AND AGAIN, WITH THAT FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS REALLY WORKING ON CREATING THOSE SYNCHRONOUS LESSONS AND THEN MAKING SURE THAT THEY'RE EXACTLY WHAT THOSE STUDENTS NEED BECAUSE THE TEACHERS ARE TASKED WITH TEACHING THE WHOLE GRADE LEVEL AT ONCE, SO IT'S MORE OF A WEBINAR TYPE DEAL AND THIS IS AGAIN WHERE THOSE LEARNING COACHES REALLY, COME INTO PLAY AND REALLY HAVE TO BE WORKING HARD WITH THEIR KIDDOS, TOO IN FACILITATING THAT INSTRUCTION.

IN NOVEMBER WITH THE ADDITION OF A COUNSELOR AND MYSELF, WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THE STUDENT CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES WE'LL BE ABLE TO DO.

GAUGE INTEREST IN A PTA.

WE HAVE A FEW PARENTS THAT ARE ALREADY EXCITED ABOUT THIS.

[01:35:02]

SO I'M READY.

THEY AT THE LEADERSHIP MEETING THE OTHER DAY, SOMEONE SAID THEIR PTA WON THE NATIONAL AWARD.

I THOUGHT, WELL, THAT'D BE REALLY COOL.

SO WE'VE GOT SOME EXCITING THINGS PLANNED.

AND THEN SOCIAL GATHERINGS AND EVENTS, OF COURSE.

YOU KNOW, WE'RE ALSO LOOKING AT SOME OTHER VIRTUAL PROGRAMS THAT DO PROVIDE THOSE THINGS.

SO YOU KNOW THAT CERTAINLY MEANS THAT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO AS WELL.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

AND THEN IN DECEMBER, WE WILL OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR THE 22 23 SCHOOL YEAR AND WE'LL ALL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT.

SO.

CAN I ASK YOU SOMETHING? ABSOLUTELY.

WHAT DOES THE PE INSTRUCTION LOOK LIKE FOR A VIRTUAL LEARNER? SO IT'S REALLY JUST WANT TO TRY TO SAY THE BEST WAY I CAN.

THE PE COACH IS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THEY WOULD DO IS IF THEY HAD STUDENTS IN THEIR CLASSROOM, AND YOU'RE JUST HOPING THAT THEY'RE DOING IT AT HOME.

[LAUGHTER] SO COACH RODRIGUEZ AND COACH FRANCIS ARE OUR PE COACHES AND THEY'RE PHENOMENAL AND THEY'VE BEEN POSTING SOME FUN RIDDLES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

AND WE EVEN HAVE ADAPTED PE, YOU KNOW, AND THE ADAPTIVE PE TEACHERS ARE WORKING WITH OUR TEACHERS AND MODIFYING THAT CURRICULUM.

SO IT'S ESSENTIALLY A PE WEBINAR.

SO IF YOU'VE EVER DONE.

I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN, SO YOU KNOW, WE DO.

WHY CAN'T I THINK OF THE NAME, BUT, YOU KNOW, CUCKOO KANGAROO AND YOU KNOW, YOU'RE JUMPING AROUND AND I'M USUALLY TIRED AFTER LIKE THE FIRST TWO SONGS, BUT YOU KNOW, THE KIDS CAN GO ALL DAY LONG IF YOU LET THEM SO.

SO THEY'RE PROBABLY HOPEFULLY HAVING A LOT OF FUN AT HOME.

OK, I'LL GET A VIDEO.

I'LL BRING IT NEXT TIME.

YEAH, BUT YEAH, SO THEY I MEAN AGAIN, AS A PARENT OF A PREVIOUS VIRTUAL LEARNER, IT'S PRETTY AMAZING WHAT THE KIDS GET INTO AT HOME AND THEY'RE HAVING FUN AND THEY'RE CRAVING THAT TIME AS WELL.

SO.

THE BIG SCREEN THE TEACHER IS LOOKING AT IS THAT PROJECTOR OR IS IT PLASMA LED? WHAT KIND OF.

I THINK THEY ARE 60 INCH TV SCREENS? THAT'S NICE.

YEAH, WHAT ARE YOU FINDING OUT ABOUT THE TEACHERS AND WHAT DREW THEM TO DO THIS AND HOW ARE THEY PERHAPS UNIQUE OR? WHAT HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE THAT FOR US? MS. BARNHILL IS ACTUALLY A REALLY GREAT EXAMPLE.

SHE JUST HAS REALLY DRAWN, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THESE TEACHERS WERE SCHOOL AT HOME TEACHERS LAST YEAR, AND THEY WERE, YOU KNOW, THAT ONE AND THE GRADE LEVEL THAT STRICTLY TAUGHT SCHOOL AT HOME.

AND SO I THINK THEY THEY MAY HAVE FOUND THEIR NICHE.

AND IT'S SUCH A UNIQUE WAY TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH YOUR STUDENTS.

I THINK FOR THE TEACHERS, ALTHOUGH IT FEELS VERY QUICK, ONLY HAVING AN HOUR WITH YOUR CHILDREN, YOU DO KIND OF BUILD THAT BOND, ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW AS WE'RE ALL LEARNING SO MUCH TOGETHER, YOU KNOW, YOU FEEL LIKE WE'RE REALLY JUST TEAM BONDING, YOU KNOW, KIND OF AS WE'RE LEARNING FROM THE STUDENTS, TOO, OF WHAT'S WORKING FOR THEM AT HOME.

AND SO SHE HAS A JUST A REALLY NEAT ATTITUDE ABOUT THAT, HOW TO BUILD THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND AND WHY SHE ENJOYS DOING SYNCHRONOUS INSTRUCTION AND ONLINE.

AND WE HAVE SO PROBABLY THREE OR FOUR ARE WERE SCHOOL AT HOME TEACHERS LAST YEAR, MS. [INAUDIBLE].

ACTUALLY, THEY'RE IN THE MIDDLE AS WELL, WITH SCHOOL AT HOME AND ONE OF HER FOURTH GRADE.

I THINK SOME OF THE OTHERS, WE HAVE A FEW FIRST-YEAR TEACHERS.

YOU KNOW? YES, YES.

SO I THINK THEY WERE JUST UP FOR THE CHALLENGE AND WE'RE ON CAMPUSES WHERE I THINK JUST HAPPENED TO WORK OUT.

SO IT'S BEEN IT IS AN INTERESTING GROUP OF, YOU KNOW, GROUP OF TEACHERS, AS I KNOW EVERY SINGLE CAMPUS IS.

BUT YOU KNOW, WE'VE GOT A LOT OF DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES AND THE TEAMS. AGAIN, THIS IS A REALLY NEAT TEAM BONDING EXPERIENCE BECAUSE THE TEAMS HAVE GOTTEN REALLY CLOSE, REALLY QUICK AND KIND OF GOTTEN THEIR OWN TEAM PERSONALITIES.

SO.

SO I'VE ALREADY KIND OF FIGURED OUT WHICH TEAM TO GO TO FOR TECHNOLOGY AND WHICH TEAM TO GO TO FOR PARENT COMMUNICATION.

AND SO IT'S BEEN.

THEN REMEMBER, WE HAVE THEM AT FOUR DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, BUT AT EACH LOCATION, THEY'RE WITH THEIR TEAM.

SO THE THIRD GRADE TEACHERS ARE TOGETHER, THE 4TH GRADE TEACHERS AND SO ON.

SO LET ME ASK THAT QUESTION ABOUT THE LOCATION.

SO FOR EXAMPLE, YOU SAID YOU HAD A COHORT AT SKAGGS.

YES, SO THEY ARE SKAGGS TEACHERS AND THE SKAGGS PRINCIPAL IS IN CHARGE OF THE EVALUATION.

NO SIR.

HOW DOES THAT WORK.

OK? THEY ARE VIRTUAL ACADEMY TEACHERS MS. FLORES IS IN CHARGE OF THEIR EVALUATION.

THEY'RE JUST USING THE PHYSICAL SPACE OF SKAGGS.

OK? MM HMM.

AND I AM INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL TO THE PRINCIPALS AT THOSE CAMPUSES AND THE OFFICE MANAGERS BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN I MEAN, WE HAD FURNITURE DELIVERED TODAY, AND THEY'VE ALL JUST REALLY WELCOMED US WITH OPEN ARMS. AND BRIAN BIRD AT BETHANY CHANGED HIS DISMISSAL PLAN THE OTHER DAY BECAUSE ONE OF OUR TEACHERS IS STILL TEACHING AT THAT TIME, AND SHE'S IN AN OPEN CLASSROOM.

SO, YOU KNOW, I SAID IT'LL BE OK.

[01:40:03]

WE'RE GETTING NOISE CANCELING HEADPHONES AND, YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING.

AND BRIAN SAID, NO, NO, IT'S NO BIG DEAL AND HE JUST REROUTED HIS KIDS.

SO IT'S AGAIN, IT'S SUCH A GREAT TEAM HERE IN PLANO AND THEY'VE ALL BEEN REALLY WELCOMING SO ALONG THE SAME LINES.

FOR EXAMPLE, IF THIRD GRADE IS AT SKAGGS, ARE THE SKAGGS THIRD GRADE TEACHERS, A COHORT THAT THE VIRTUAL TEACHERS CAN WORK WITH AT ALL.

JUST IN TERMS OF IDEA SHARING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, I'M AND MENTORING.

YOU KNOW, ALL THE THINGS THAT GOES ALONG WITH SOCIALIZATION OF BEING A TEACHER IN A SCHOOL, ESPECIALLY A FIRST YEAR TEACHER WHO MIGHT NEED THAT SUPPORT.

DO WE HAVE THAT KIND OF INTERACTION AT ALL.

NO, I MEAN, I'M NOT GOING TO SAY NO, BECAUSE THERE'S PROBABLY A SKAGGS TEACHER THAT SAID, WAIT, I'VE GIVEN THEM PAPER CLIPS OR I'VE SHOWED THEM WHERE THE PRINTER IS.

AGAIN, EVERYBODY'S BEEN VERY WELCOMING, BUT AS FAR AS TEAMING COLLABORATION AND KIND OF WHAT YOU IMAGINE AS A COHORT OR A GRADE LEVEL TEAM, WE'RE PRETTY CLOSE KNIT.

AND BECAUSE WE'RE IN SUCH DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS, I MEAN, OUR CURRICULUM IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RIGHT NOW AND ALL OF THAT SO.

SO WHILE THE TEACHERS HAVE ALL BEEN WELCOMING THE, YOU KNOW, LIKE OUR THIRD GRADE TEACHERS ARE ONES IN THE E HALL, ONES IN THE F HALL AND ONES IN THE G HALL.

SO THEY'RE NOT EVEN RIGHT THERE TOGETHER, BUT THEY FIND GREAT WAYS.

AND THEN FRIDAYS BECAUSE THE STUDENTS ARE IN AMPED.

THAT'S OUR COLLABORATION AND PLANNING DAYS.

SO THAT'S BEEN EDGENUITY TRAINING.

AND THEN THIS FRIDAY, WE'RE HAVING A STAFF MEETING AND ALL COMING TOGETHER SO THAT THEY CAN BE READY TO PLAN ON I DON'T THINK WE'RE IN THEIR SAME SPACE RIGHT NOW.

I THINK IN THE FUTURE, THOUGH.

ABSOLUTELY.

I THINK THERE'S LOTS OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO COLLABORATE.

YEAH.

SO I THINK, YOU KNOW, WE WORKED REALLY HARD FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS TO TRY AND CREATE THOSE LANES OF COLLABORATION ACROSS CAMPUSES.

AND SO I WOULD ASK Y'ALL TO ASK YOUR STAFF THIS FIRST YEAR IF THAT'S A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY WHERE WE CAN SAY THIS IS AN EXPANSION NEED, I WOULD SEE THAT THAT COULD BE A BIG ISSUE, ESPECIALLY IF, YOU KNOW, IF SOMEBODY FEELS LIKE THEY DON'T HAVE SOMEBODY THEY CAN GO TO, YOU KNOW, THAT WOULD BE MY CONCERN.

I THINK RIGHT NOW, SORRY, KATIE.

I THINK RIGHT NOW THEY'RE JUST LEARNING THE TECHNOLOGY, THEY'RE LEARNING THEIR DEVICES.

SURE.

THEY'RE LEARNING THEIR KIDS AND THEY'RE LIKE, I'LL JUST TELL YOU A NEW PROBLEM WE HAVE IS THE TEACHERS AND NOBODY THOUGHT ABOUT THIS.

MOST TEACHERS IN A NORMAL ENVIRONMENT ARE STANDING UP AND THEY'RE ENGAGING WITH THEIR KIDS.

OUR TEACHERS ARE SITTING DOWN AND THEY'RE SITTING DOWN ALL DAY AND WE ARE STARTING TO HEAR THEM GRUMBLE ABOUT THAT.

SO THAT'S SOMETHING WE GOT TO WORK ON.

OK.

FINDING STANDING DESKS FOR THEM OR SOME OTHER MODALITY FOR THEM, SO THAT'S AN EXCELLENT THING IN TERMS OF A CHALLENGE AND PERHAPS ADDITIONAL RESOURCES, WHAT OTHER KINDS OF CHALLENGES OR ADDITIONAL THINGS DO YOU THINK YOU ANTICIPATE NEEDING TO AS YOU MOVE FORWARD? NOW'S YOUR CHANCE.

SURE.

TO PLANT THE SEEDS OF THAT.

YES, YES, YOU KNOW, CERTAINLY, I THINK THE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE TEACHERS WITH THE WE'RE WORKING ON GETTING HEADPHONES FOR THE ONES THAT ARE IN OPEN CLASSROOMS AND THE STANDING DESKS.

I WOULD AND THEN CHAIRS.

I FEEL LIKE THAT, YOU KNOW, LIKE IF YOU ARGUE FOR ONE, WHY WOULD YOU ARGUE FOR THE OTHER? BUT YOU KNOW THE CHAIRS FOR WHEN THEY ARE SITTING AND THEN I WOULD LOVE TO DO SOME, YOU KNOW, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON ONLINE TEACHING, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE I JUST AND OUR DIGITAL LEARNING TEAM IS PHENOMENAL.

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH TIFF'S TREATS TO SEND THEM TO CONTINUE HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR THEM.

BUT YOU KNOW, IT'D BE AMAZING IF WE COULD JUST TAKE A WEEK AND SAY, HERE'S WHAT TO DO WHEN THIS HAPPENS OR HERE'S HOW TO, YOU KNOW, HERE'S SOME GREAT TOOLS.

I MEAN, KAHOOT IS GREAT.

BUT YOU KNOW, YOU FEEL LIKE THERE'S LOTS OF TEACHERS DOING KAHOOT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO LEARN SOME THINGS THAT I THINK WE JUST HAVEN'T HAD THE YOU KNOW, THE GIFT OF TIME YET, BECAUSE WE HAVE GOTTEN THIS SO QUICKLY, SO I'M INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE TEACHERS FOR COMING ON AS QUICKLY AS THEY HAVE.

AND WE DON'T NECESSARILY COLLABORATE WITH OTHER CAMPUSES.

BUT I THINK RIGHT NOW IT'S JUST A MATTER OF THEM COLLABORATING WITH EACH OTHER AND AND THEY'VE ALREADY BECOME AMAZING.

YOU KNOW THIS A THIRD GRADE TEACHER THE OTHER DAY CREATED A VIDEO OF HOW TO DO CAMMY AND SEND IT OUT TO THE WHOLE STAFF.

AND SO I THINK, YOU KNOW, EVEN CONNECTING WITH SOME OTHER PROGRAMS, OTHER, YOU KNOW, DISTRICTS THAT ARE DOING THIS, BUT ALSO SOME ONLINE SOME PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON TEACHING ONLINE, I THINK WOULD AND.

WHICH IS A STATE REQUIREMENT.

ALL OF OUR TEACHERS THAT TEACH AT THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY HAVE TO HAVE I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S FOUR OR SIX HOURS OF ONLINE VIRTUAL TEACHING AND EDUCATION EVERY YEAR, AND SO WE'RE WORKING ON GETTING THEM LINED UP FOR THAT.

BUT AS FAR AS THE RESOURCES, YES, WE STILL NEED SOME THINGS.

BUT SO FAR, I MEAN, THE CAMPUSES, THE FOUR CAMPUSES THAT WE'RE AT JUST ABOUT

[01:45:01]

EVERY DEPARTMENT IN OUR DISTRICT HAS PULLED TOGETHER AND MADE EVERYTHING HAPPEN.

THE GUINN STAFF HAS BEEN AMAZING, JUST THE STAFF THEMSELVES BECAUSE WE ARE USING THE GUINN STAFF FOR SOME OF OUR SIXTH GRADE CLASSES.

AND SO JUST OVERALL, THE TEACHERS HAVE WHAT THEY NEED.

I THINK OUR STUDENTS HAVE WHAT THEY NEED.

AND SO NOW IT'S JUST A MATTER OF, YOU KNOW, SEEING WHAT WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE IT.

IF I MAY CHIME IN, I MEAN, ONE BIG KUDOS TO DR.

GOBER AND HIS TEAM.

THIS WAS A LEGISLATIVE PRIORITY.

OUR ACADEMIC SERVICES TEAM AND OUR FAMILY STUDENT SERVICES TEAM STARTED PLANNING AND OUR TECHNOLOGY GROUP AND THEN ALL OF THAT KIND OF CAME TO A HARD STOP.

AND SO WHEN THIS BECAME A VIABLE OPTION, IT WAS PICKING UP THE OLD PLANS AND TRYING TO RUN AS FAST AS THEY CAN.

AND THEY HAVE DONE AN AMAZING JOB OF TURNING THIS AROUND IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

ADDITIONALLY, AS FAR AS THE RESOURCES ARE CONCERNED, LIKE WE HAD TO FIND A PLACE WE DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING REALLY ORDERED.

SO WE'VE PULLED FURNITURE.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE'S NOTHING REALLY MATCHING IN THOSE PHOTOS.

AND THAT, YOU KNOW, RANDY AND HIS TEAM, IT WAS LIKE, OK, WHERE DO WE HAVE SOME SPARE DESK HERE AND SPARE CHAIRS THERE? AND LET'S PULL IT AND LET'S HAVE THIS DELIVERED OVER TO THIS CAMPUS AND HERE.

AND SO WE'VE DONE A LOT OF SHUFFLING OF RESOURCES JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, TEACHERS HAVE A WORKSPACE, TEACHERS HAVE A CHAIR TO SIT IN.

THERE ARE, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T HAVE A FACILITY TO HOUSE VIRTUAL.

SO WE HAVE TEACHERS THAT ARE DOUBLED AND SEVERAL OF THEM IN A SHARED CLASSROOM.

AND SO EVERYBODY HAS JUST DONE WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE THIS WORK FOR OUR FAMILIES AND OUR KIDS.

AND EVEN THOUGH IT'S JUST, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE OVER A THOUSAND, IT'S A THOUSAND FAMILIES THAT WANTED THIS AND SO BIG KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE HARD WORK AND ATTENTION.

WELL.

AND I WOULD ECHO THAT SAME.

DR. GOBER, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEAM AS WELL.

BUT I THINK CERTAINLY WE'RE NOT EXPECTING YOU ALL TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TO OUR QUESTIONS THREE WEEKS IN.

AND THAT'S THE WAY PILOT PROGRAMS WORK.

Y'ALL ARE GOING TO LEARN A LOT ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED.

AND SO I THINK MAYBE I WOULD THROW THIS OUT THERE THAT, YOU KNOW, MAYBE WE COME BACK IN SIX MONTHS OR SO AND TELL US, GIVE US A REPORT ON WHAT YOU ALL HAVE LEARNED, WHAT THE NEXT STEPS ARE, WHAT THE ASKS ARE SO THAT, YOU KNOW, WE CAN DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO SUPPORT THE EXPANSION OF THIS, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THAT.

I DIDN'T WANT TO INTERRUPT AND I'M NOT TRYING TO CUT OFF ANY LAST QUESTIONS.

HEATHER I THINK HAD A QUESTION.

YEAH.

FIRST OF ALL, YOU KNOW, FOR SUCH A SHORT TERM I MEAN, THIS IS AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT.

KUDOS TO YOU ALL.

AND I HATE TO SAY, BUT [LAUGHTER] BUT I DO SHARE ONE NOT A CONCERN IS LIKE A FRIENDLY REMINDER, OUR DISTRICT DOES HAVE A, YOU KNOW, A WEALTH, OF EXPERIENCE AND INFORMATION ON TEAM COLLABORATION.

AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, WE REALLY PLEASE LET THE TEAM KNOW.

I KNOW THEY KNOW HOW TO COLLABORATE.

SO JUST DRAW ON THAT EXPERIENCE.

AND I MEAN, AFTER ALL, IT'S ONLY THREE WEEKS OLD, BUT WE WANT YOU TO, YOU KNOW, DON'T REINVENT THE WHEEL.

THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO SAY.

ABSOLUTELY.

I JUST WANT TO CLARIFY THAT THEY MAY NOT BE GOING DOWN THE HALL, RIGHT THIS SECOND TO GO TALK TO THE OTHER THIRD GRADE TEACHERS AT THAT BUILDING.

BUT THEY ARE WORKING AMONG THEMSELVES AND THEY ALL COME FROM DIFFERENT BUILDINGS AND THEY'RE WORKING WITH THE STAFF FROM EDGENUITY AND THEY'RE WORKING WITH OUR CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT.

SO THERE'S A LOT OF COLLABORATION.

BUT THE SPECIFIC QUESTION IS, ARE THEY GOING DOWN THE HALL? I DOUBT IT, TO BE QUITE HONEST WITH YOU.

BUT WILL THAT HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE? I WOULD PRESUME SO.

BUT RIGHT NOW THEY ARE VIGOROUSLY LEARNING THE TECHNOLOGY, BOTH THE PHYSICAL TECHNOLOGY AND THE ONLINE TECHNOLOGY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY'RE LEARNING THEIR STUDENTS.

AND SO AS WE WRAP THINGS UP HERE, I'LL LET YOU GUYS, YOU CAN PERUSE THE WEBSITE AT YOUR OWN LEISURE.

IT'S LISTED AS ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS.

SO JUST LIKE EVERY SCHOOL HAS A WEBSITE, SO DOES THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

YOU CAN GET IN THERE AND PLAY WITH THAT.

YOU CAN SEE TEACHER PROFILES, TEACHER SCHEDULES, SO ON AND SO FORTH.

AND I DON'T WANT TO END WITHOUT THINKING OUR LAST GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN VERY, VERY PATIENT AND THAT IS OUR PARENTS, OUR PARENTS FROM THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY HAVE

[01:50:02]

BEEN THEY HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY PATIENT.

AND SO I JUST WANT TO COMMEND THEM AND THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES AND CERTAINLY THE STAFF AT THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY AND MS. FLORES.

SO THANK YOU, GUYS.

I ALSO HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING THE CURRICULUM.

I HEARD THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT CURRICULUM.

I MEAN, FOR ME, LIKE OUR PLANO ISD CURRICULUM, ALMOST LIKE SACRED.

YES.

WHAT I MEAN WHEN PEOPLE HEAR, OH, YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT CURRICULUM DOES THAT MEAN, YOU KNOW, HOW IS THE STANDARD, YOU KNOW, DID YOU LOWER THE STANDARD OR, IT'S JUST CONFIGURED DIFFERENTLY? TAUGHT DIFFERENTLY.

IT'S ABSOLUTELY CONFIGURED DIFFERENTLY.

BUT OUR CURRICULUM RIGHT NOW IS SORT OF LIKE OUT OF THE BOX CURRICULUM.

AND SO RIGHT NOW WE ARE LITERALLY CUSTOMIZING IT TO MAKE IT MORE OF PLANO CURRICULUM.

SO IF YOU ASK ME ON DAY ONE, WHICH WAS JUST LAST WEEK, IS THAT OUR CURRICULUM? I WOULD SAY, WELL, NO, IT'S REALLY OUT OF THE BOX INGENUITY CURRICULUM AND OUR PARENTS AND I, WE HAD A PARENT MEETING ABOUT THAT JUST YESTERDAY, MONDAY.

AND SO THEY KNOW THAT WE'RE WORKING ON CUSTOMIZING IT, MAKING SORT OF PLANO-IZING IT AND GETTING THAT THE LEVEL THAT THEY WOULD EXPECT TO BEING A PLANO ISD STUDENT.

AND SO WE'RE WORKING ON IT.

WE'RE WORKING ON WITH THE ACADEMICS TEAM AND WORKING ON IT WITH THE TECHNOLOGY TEAM.

AND THE SECOND NINE WEEKS, WHICH BEGINS OCTOBER 13TH OR 14TH, THEY'LL SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE.

THANK YOU.

IT IS ALIGNED WITH THE TEKS.

SO WITH THE TEKS FOR SURE.

IT IS ALIGNED WITH THE TEEKS.

BUT YES, THERE ARE SOME PLANO-IZING.

CERTAINLY THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

SO I DON'T I MEAN, ALIGN WITH EVERY DISTRICT HAS TO BE ALIGNED WITH TEKS, BUT PLANO IS SPECIAL LIKE THEY HAVE.

THEY'RE PRETTY SPECIAL FOR CURRICULUM, SO THAT'S WHAT I'M REFERRING TO.

BUT, YOU KNOW, AS BECAUSE IT'S A WORK IN PROGRESS, I FULLY BELIEVE WE WILL EVENTUALLY REACH BACK IN THE PLANO, LIKE JUST LIKE THE REAL SCHOOL.

I MEAN.

YEAH.

WHICH YOUR SCHOOLS ARE REAL SCHOOLS.

I'M JUST SAYING, JUST LIKE FIRST IN SCHOOLS.

I WOULD JUST SAY ON THE ON THAT CURRICULUM PIECE IS THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE ACADEMY PROGRAMS THAT FOLLOW ACADEMY CURRICULUMS LIKE OUR ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL.

YOU KNOW, THEY THEY WORK THE CURRICULUM DIFFERENTLY, AND IB WORKS THE CURRICULUM DIFFERENTLY.

AND IF YOU GO TO HUFFMAN, THEY'RE WORKING THE CURRICULUM DIFFERENTLY FROM THE OTHER REGULAR CAMPUSES WITH PLANO ISD CURRICULUM, SO THE CUSTOMIZATION OF CURRICULUM DOES NOT EQUAL LACK OF RIGOR.

SO THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY IS A CURRICULUM, AND NOW IT'S THE WORK OF THE TEAM TO ENSURE THE RIGOR AND SO THAT THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY KIDS HAVE A RIGOROUS EXPERIENCE PREPARING THEM FOR THEIR FUTURE JUST LIKE ALL OF OUR OTHER ACADEMY PROGRAMS, BUT THEY'RE DIFFERENT, AND WHEN YOU SIGN UP, THEY'RE DIFFERENT.

AND SO I, YOU KNOW, I JUST REALLY GREAT QUESTION BECAUSE IT'S, BECAUSE I DON'T ASK SOMEBODY, WELL.

YEAH, YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.

I DO WANT TO ALSO, YOU KNOW, NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO THANK THE TEAM.

YOU CAN HEAR FROM THE CONVERSATION.

THERE'S NO PERSON AT THE TABLE THAT HAS NOT BEEN A PART OF THIS.

THEIR DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN A PART OF THE LAUNCH OF BUILDING THIS THING IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND LAUNCHING.

AND SO THANK YOU, DR.

GOBER, KATRINA, PATRICK, YOUR TEAM, RANDY.

I'M GOING TO [INAUDIBLE] THERESA.

KATIE, REALLY.

YOU KNOW YOUR LEADERSHIP STEPPING UP.

I'M GOING BETH [INAUDIBLE] SORRY TO LEAVE EVERYBODY OUT.

BUT KATIE, YOUR LEADERSHIP AND PULLING THAT TEAM TOGETHER AND BUILDING A CULTURE AND, YOU KNOW, IN AN ALMOST A MINUTE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP AND YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR THE FOR THE JOB THAT YOU'VE TAKEN ON.

AND SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

THANK YOU.

I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.

AND TO THE KIDS AND THE PARENTS WHO ARE TAKING ON A PILOT.

I KEEP SAYING REMEMBER TO SAY THE WORD PILOT BECAUSE WE'RE LEARNING AS WE GO IN THIS TO SEE HOW WE CAN CONTINUE TO REFINE.

AND DR.

GOBER TOLD ME THAT THE PARENT EMAILS THAT HE'S GOTTEN I'VE ADVERTISING SPOT ON.

YOU KNOW THAT THE FEEDBACK THAT WE'RE GETTING ABOUT THE PILOT IS GOING TO IMPROVE THE PILOT.

SO YOU TALK ABOUT PARENTS AS PARTNERS REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

AND SO IT'S EXCITING TO SEE.

AND SO MAYBE ON A VISIT TO A CAMPUS, YOU'LL HIT ONE OF THE CAMPUSES THAT HAS ONE OF THESE VIRTUAL WINGS AND YOU CAN GO TAKE A LOOK.

WELL, I HAVE TO SAY KUDOS TO THE ADMINISTRATION FOR STICKING WITH IT BECAUSE I KNOW IT WAS A LEGISLATIVE PRIORITY AND THERE WAS A LOT OF WORK DONE.

AND THEN WHEN THE LEGISLATURE KIND OF, YOU KNOW, JUST WENT OUT OF TOWN AND THEY DIDN'T FINISH THE WORK, WE HAD TO STOP OUR TEAM RIGHT? YOU CAN'T WITHOUT KNOWING THAT YOU WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS.

[01:55:03]

YOU COULDN'T CONTINUE TO PUT RESOURCES INTO IT UNTIL YOU FOUND OUT, OK, THEY'RE REALLY GOING TO LET US DO THIS.

SO THAT'S AMAZING THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY EASY TO JUST SAY, NO, WE'RE NOT GOING TO DO IT THIS YEAR.

JUST CAN'T, YOU KNOW, BUT YOU'VE RESPONDED TO A NEED IN THE COMMUNITY THAT WAS VERY WELL EXPRESSED.

AND I THINK I'M SO IMPRESSED BECAUSE THIS BOARD HAS ALWAYS WANTED CHOICES FOR OUR KIDS AND WE HAVE WE PROVIDE CHOICES FOR ALL STUDENTS IN SO MANY WAYS.

SO I'M JUST SAYING KUDOS ON THIS EFFORT BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN EASY.

SORRY, WE CAN'T DO THAT THIS YEAR, SO THANK YOU FOR STICKING WITH IT.

WE APPRECIATE IT.

DR. GOBER, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH AND YOUR TEAM FOR DOING AN AMAZING JOB BECAUSE I'VE ALWAYS BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF THE VIRTUAL ACADEMY.

I'M SO GLAD THAT IT'S ACTUALLY HERE AND THAT WE'RE ACTUALLY DOING IT.

SO THANK YOU, KATIE, FOR JUMPING ON BOARD AND DOING A REALLY A VERY HEAVY LIFT.

YOU KNOW, YOU DID A VERY HEAVY LIFT FOR OUR DISTRICT, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.

AND DR. GOBER AND TEAM, YOU'RE AMAZING.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT HAVE MIGHT BE A QUESTION THAT'S OUT THERE IS IS THE COST.

AND SO THE TECHNOLOGY COST AND SOME OF THE OTHER COSTS THAT HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH IT WERE PART OF THE ESSER PLAN.

SO, SO IT WAS IT WAS A PRETTY SMALL.

IT WAS NOT A HUGE COST, BUT THERE WAS A THERE WAS A PRICE TAG ATTACHED TO IT.

AND SO WE DID BUDGET FOR THAT IN THE ESSER PLAN.

AND THAT COST WAS PROBABLY A LOT LOWER THAN IF WE WERE TO LOSE ALL OF THOSE STUDENTS TO OTHER OPTIONS.

ABSOLUTELY, YEAH.

SO I WILL SAY ONE LAST THANK YOU SARA TO YOU THAT YOU'VE GOT A TEAM HERE THAT THAT CAN CREATE A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT LIKE THAT AND PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER IN SHORT ORDER.

I WILL SAY THAT JUST WITHIN MY TIME ON THIS BOARD, THAT HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN POSSIBLE WITH STAFF TO BE ABLE TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER THAT QUICKLY.

AND THAT'S A TESTAMENT TO THE TEAM AND THE TEAM MENTALITY THAT YOU ALL HAVE HERE.

SO KUDOS TO ALL OF Y'ALL.

IT'S NOT LIKE WE HAVEN'T HAD OTHER THINGS TO DEAL WITH IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS, EITHER.

SO THANK YOU.

THANK YOU FOR THE REPORT.

I THINK IF I SAID THIS WAS A DISCUSSION ACTION ITEM EARLIER, THAT WAS NOT RIGHT.

THIS IS A REPORT.

SO THERE'S NO ACTION ON THE PART OF THE BOARD, BUT GREAT WORK Y'ALL.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.
