[5. INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE]
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TONIGHT.IT HAS BEEN A DIFFICULT YEAR SO FAR FOR MILLIONS OF TEXANS.
THE WINTER STORM LAST MONTH LEFT MILLIONS OF TEXANS WITHOUT POWER AND HOMES SUFFERED WATER ISSUES AS [INAUDIBLE] PROBLEMS WITH THE STATE'S POWER GRID.
MY HOUSE WAS DAMAGED IN THE WINTER STORM LIKE SO MANY OF MY NEIGHBORS.
BUT I SAW WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO CAME OUT TO HELP THEIR COMMUNITY, FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
AS WE MOVE FORWARD INTO THE MONTH OF MARCH.
TODAY, WE CELEBRATE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY IS A CELEBRATION OF THE ADOPTION OF THE TEXAS DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF MARCH 2ND, 1836, THE CREATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, AS THE GOVERNOR MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY IN LUBBOCK, TEXAS, TO REMOVE SPECIFIC STATE MANDATES. I HOPE THIS MONTH WILL BRING NEW BEGINNINGS AND A FRESHER OUTLOOK.
OUR STUDENTS. AND FAMILIES HAVE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
IT IS WITH OPTIMISM THAT WE ARE STRONG AND CAPABLE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WILL RECOVER FROM THESE CHALLENGES.
I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE IN OUR DISTRICT FOR COMING OUT TO HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS AND COMMUNITY. OUR STUDENTS ARE BLESSED WITH THIS DISTRICT HOME FILLED WITH CARE AND CONTINUOUS SUPPORT.
SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU, TRUSTEE POWELL.
IT'S NOW TIME FOR OUR BOARD RECOGNITIONS.
[6. RECOGNITIONS]
AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE SCROLLING PRESENTATION, WE HAVE MANY TALENTED STUDENTS WINNING AWARDS AT THE STATE AND NATIONAL LEVELS.WE ARE RECOGNIZING ONE HUNDRED NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST, COCACOLA SCHOLARS FOUNDATION, TWO FINALISTS AND FOUR SEMIFINALISTS, AND TWO TEAMS OF THREE STUDENTS FROM PLANO WEST WHO HAVE WON FIRST AND SECOND PLACE AT THE ACADEMIC WORLD QUEST REGIONAL COMPETITION.
IN COMPUTER SCIENCE FIVE TEAMS OF THREE STUDENTS FROM PLANO WEST AND PLANO SENIOR HIGH HAVE TAKEN FIRST AND SECOND PLACES AT THE DIGITAL DIVAS PROGRAMING COMPETITION.
THIS IS AN ALL GIRLS COMPETITION.
WE HAVE WINNERS IN THE HARVARD NATIONAL FORENSIC TOURNAMENT FROM JASPER AND MCMILLAN HIGH SCHOOLS IN PLANO EAST SENIOR HIGH AND THE COLLEYVILLE HERITAGE WINTER INDIVIDUAL WINNERS FROM JASPER AND MCMILLAN HIGH SCHOOLS.
WE'RE VERY PROUD OF THESE STUDENTS.
I'M PARTICULARLY PLEASED TO SEE THE PROGRESS WE'RE MAKING IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND DIGITAL COMPETITION. I THINK OUR ENTIRE DISTRICT HAS BENEFITED FROM ENHANCE BOTH PROGRAMING, BOTH CURRICULAR AND EXTRACURRICULAR.
WITH THE RECENT WEATHER BEHIND US, THE BOARD WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER RANDY MCDOWELL AND HIS FACILITY SERVICES TEAM WHO MADE THE OPENING OF SCHOOLS AFTER THE CATASTROPHIC WINTER STORM A PRIORITY.
SUPERINTENDENT BONSER, WOULD YOU LIKE TO BEGIN THIS RECOGNITION? THANK YOU, PRESIDENT RICHARDS.
IT IS MY EXTREME PLEASURE TO HAVE THIS RECOGNITION THIS EVENING.
I AM VERY PROUD OF RANDY MCDOWELL, OUR CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, AND HIS FACILITIES TEAM.
RANDY AND HIS GROUP WERE OUT IN THE STORM WHEN EVERYONE ELSE WAS TRYING TO STAY IN AND STAY SAFE. RANDY AND HIS TEAM WHO HAVE JOINED US ON THE SCREEN THIS EVENING.
RANDY AND HIS TEAM WERE WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO MITIGATE DAMAGE AND THEN TO RESPOND WHEN DAMAGE DID OCCUR.
THEY WERE THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM.
THEY WERE MAKING HARD DECISIONS AND MANAGING A SITUATION THAT I DON'T THINK ANYONE COULD HAVE IMAGINED HAPPENING IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
ARCTIC WEATHER, WHICH IS MORE LIKE WHERE I'M FROM IN THE NORTH.
FACILITY SERVICES TEAMS ARE OFTEN WORKING NIGHT SHIFTS OR WHILE THE REST OF US ARE OUT OF OUR BUILDINGS. SO WHEN WE DON'T ACTUALLY SEE THEM AT WORK, SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A LITTLE BIT TOO EASY TO FORGET THAT THERE IS A SKILLED AND DEDICATED TEAM OF CARING INDIVIDUALS
[00:05:03]
WHO LOVE THIS DISTRICT AND WORK AROUND THE CLOCK TO KEEP EVERYTHING RUNNING EVERY DAY, ALL THE TIME. NO TIME WAS THIS MORE TRUE THAN LAST WEEK.THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF ALL OF OUR DISTRICT BUILDINGS AND THE DISTRICT GROUNDS, AND IT'S A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY.
OUR MOST RECENT WEATHER CHALLENGES AND RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES HAS PROVEN THAT IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION THEY WILL STEP UP AND MAKE SURE THAT OUR BUILDINGS ARE SAFE AND READY FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS.
BEFORE I TURN THE RECOGNITION OVER TO RANDY, I WANT TO EXPRESS MY PERSONAL GRATITUDE FOR A JOB WELL DONE TO YOU, RANDY, AND TO YOUR ENTIRE FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE TEAM.
I KNOW THAT YOU ALL HAD YOUR OWN PERSONAL WEATHER RELATED SITUATIONS TO DEAL WITH IN YOUR OWN HOMES, WITH YOUR OWN FAMILIES AND OTHER CRISES TO ATTEND TO.
BUT YOU PUT THE NEEDS OF THE DISTRICT FIRST AND OUR LEARNING COMMUNITY.
WE APPRECIATE THE IMPORTANT WORK THAT YOU DO.
AND I THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL COMMITMENT AND YOUR DEDICATION AT THIS TIME OF UNUSUAL NEED. PLEASE EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE TO YOUR FAMILIES WHO SACRIFICED YOUR PRESENCE DURING A TIME OF CRISIS IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR THE TIME THAT YOU SPENT AWAY FROM THEM.
YOU ARE ALL HEROES IN MY BOOK AND I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH.
I'LL TURN THE FLOOR OVER TO RANDY AND HE'LL INTRODUCE THIS WONDERFUL TEAM.
THANK YOU, SUPERINTENDENT BONSER.
THIS PLANO ISD FACILITY SERVICES TEAM HAS AN IMPRESSIVE AND EXPERIENCED GROUP.
THIS ISN'T THEIR FIRST EMERGENCY RESPONSE BY A LONG SHOT.
THEY'RE A SEASONED TEAM AND SOMEHOW ALWAYS BE ABLE TO MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE.
WE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OPEN 68 SCHOOLS THE MONDAY AFTER THE STORM WITHOUT THEIR EXPERTISE AND THEIR WORK ETHIC.
WE ACTUALLY HAD DAMAGE TO 51 CAMPUSES AND AUXILIARY BUILDINGS, PLUS CLARK AND KIMBROGH STADIUMS. SO IT HAS BEEN A BIG JOB GETTING EVERYTHING REPAIRED AND IN SOME CASES THE FULL EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE IS STILL BEING LOOKED INTO.
LET ME INTRODUCE OUR FACILITIES LEADERSHIP TEAM JOINING US TONIGHT, VIA ZOOM.
WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME, TELL THE BOARD WHAT YOU DO AND HOW LONG YOU'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT. I'LL START WITH JOSE ALVAREZ.
OH, I'M SORRY. I THINK JOSE IS OUR MOST VETERAN OF THE TEAM.
HE'S BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT GOING ON ABOUT THIRTY TWO YEARS.
A LONG, A WHOLE CAREER, AND HE'S THE EAST CLUSTER MANAGER.
BILL, IF YOU'LL TELL US WHAT YOU DO AND HOW MANY YEARS YOU'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT.
THE WEST BUSTER FACILITIES MANAGER AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT AROUND 30 YEARS.
I'M THE CENTRAL CLUSTER MANAGER AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT GOING ON FIVE YEARS.
AMY BROWN. YES, I'M THE FACILITY SERVICES MANAGER AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT FOR 15 YEARS. MICHELLE HAN.
HI. I'M THE ENERGY MANAGER AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT FOR 15 YEARS.
HELLO. I AM THE [INAUDIBLE] COORDINATOR AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER, AND I'VE BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT FOR 20 YEARS.
YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE THERE.
WE HAVE ONE MORE, THAT'S RICKY DOBBS.
AND RICKY'S NOT ACTUALLY AN EMPLOYEE, BUT HE PLAYS A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE HERE IN PLANO, ISD. RICKY, DO YOU WANT TO TELL US WHAT YOU DO? ABSOLUTELY, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALLOWING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TONIGHT.
MY NAME IS RICKY DOBBS AND I'M THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS FOR ABM.
WE ARE THE CUSTODIAL PROVIDER FOR THE DISTRICT AND WE WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH PISD FACILITIES TO MAKE SURE THAT WHEN THERE IS AN EMERGENCY AND THERE IS ADDITIONAL WORK NEEDED FOR CLEANING UP, THAT WE'RE THERE WHENEVER WE'RE NEEDED.
SO I JUST WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALLOWING US TO JOIN TONIGHT.
AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE THE PARTNERSHIP AND THE WORKING RELATIONSHIP WE HAVE WITH EVERYONE. GREAT, THANK YOU AND NO JUAN I DIDN'T FORGET ABOUT YOU, SO MY LAST INTRODUCTION IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FACILITY SERVICES, JUAN RAMOS.
AND JUAN, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE DISTRICT? I'VE BEEN AT THIS DISTRICT ABOUT SIX YEARS.
THANK YOU. JUAN IS THE PERSON I DEPEND ON MOST IN AN EMERGENCY, LIKE THE ONE WE JUST EXPERIENCED WITH THIS STORM.
IT WAS LIKE TRYING TO MANAGE CHAOS.
WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT.
WITH THE POWER OUTAGES AND THE EXTREME COLD AND THE GIVE AND MAGNITUDE OF THE DAMAGES.
[00:10:03]
JUAN AND THE FACILITIES TEAM, THOSE HERE ON ZOOM AND ALSO THOSE WATCHING FROM HOME REALLY EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS.THAT INCLUDES OUR FACILITIES SERVICE TECHNICIANS WHO WERE THE BOOTS ON THE GROUND, THE ONES GOING DOWN INTO THE TRENCHES WITH THE WRENCHES, INSPECTING CLASSROOMS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND SURVEYING OUR FACILITIES TO MAKE SURE WE WERE READY TO SAFELY OPEN.
I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO JUAN AND THE ENTIRE FACILITY SERVICES TEAM ON A JOB WELL DONE.
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] I WANT TO ADD MY THANKS, SOME OF THE VIDEOS WE SAW WERE TRULY HORRIFYING WATERFALLS IN SCHOOLS, AND I KNOW THERE WERE MANY OTHER THINGS THAT WERE LESS VISIBLE, THAT WERE PROBABLY EVEN MORE DAMAGING.
SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR GOING IN AS QUICKLY AS YOU DID TO SAVE TAXPAYER DOLLARS AND ALSO TO SAVE LEARNING TIME FOR OUR KIDS.
SO I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL YOUR WORK.
OTHER BOARD MEMBERS, YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE TO ADD? I WOULD HAVE SAID EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID TAMMY.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE IN THE MEETING TONIGHT AND FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID IN THAT TIME AND GAVE UP YOUR TIME WITH YOUR FAMILIES TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS.
SO THANK YOU. I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS WERE WORKING LATE AT NIGHT BECAUSE I'VE GOT PHONE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES FROM PARENTS AND FAMILIES WHO LIVE NEXT TO THE SCHOOLS.
AND I LIVE NEXT TO PLANO EAST HIGH SCHOOL.
SO I GOT A LOT OF TEXT MESSAGES AND PARENTS GOING, WHY ARE THE SCHOOL LIGHTS ON? SO THE THING IS THAT, YOU KNOW, I KNEW YOU WERE THERE.
I KNEW YOU WERE TAKING CARE OF ISSUES.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, YOU GAVE ME AS A REASON TO SAY, YOU KNOW, WE ARE AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL DISTRICT AND WE HAVE YOU KNOW, WE DO WHATEVER IS NECESSARY TO MAKE IT, YOU KNOW, TO CONTINUE OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION AT OUR SCHOOLS.
SO THANK YOU. SO ONCE AGAIN, ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES IN PLANO, ISD, ALLOW ME TO EXPRESS OUR HEARTFELT APPRECIATION TO MR. MCDOWELL AND THE FACILITY SERVICES EMPLOYEES WHO WERE CRITICAL BEHIND THE SCENES AND PARAMOUNT TO REOPENING OPERATIONAL, CLEAN AND SAFE CAMPUSES FOR PLANO ISD FAMILIES AND STAFF. I HOPE WE NEVER HAVE ANOTHER STORM LIKE THIS, BUT IF WE DO, WE ARE IN CAPABLE HANDS. THANK YOU.
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] WE'RE GOING TO SLIGHTLY AMEND THE AGENDA, AND SO WE ARE MOVING TO ITEM NINE A.

I HAVE A MOTION BY ANGELA POWELL, A SECOND BY CODY WEAVER THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ADOPTS THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
[00:15:01]
WE WILL NOW PROCEED TO VOTE ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.RAISE YOUR HAND. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY SEVEN ZERO.
THANK YOU. TAMMY, CAN I MAKE A COMMENT ABOUT THE CONSENT AGENDA? ONE OF THE ITEMS THAT WE PASSED WAS THE EXTENSION TO THE DISTRICT OF INNOVATION PLAN, AND I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY KNEW HOW WONDERFUL THAT AGREEMENT IS FOR THIS DISTRICT AND THE LOCAL CONTROL AND ALL THE INNOVATION THAT IT AFFORDS THE DISTRICT.
SO I JUST WANTED TO CALL ATTENTION TO THAT.
WE WE PASSED BEGINNING THE PROCESS AGAIN.
IS THAT CORRECT? SUPERINTENDENT BONSER? YES, THAT IS CORRECT.
IT AUTHORIZES US THE TIMELINE TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF RE-AUTHORIZING THE DISTRICT OF INNOVATION PLAN, AND THEN WE'LL BRING THE PLAN BACK TO THE BOARD.
MY MISTAKE ON THAT. BUT I REMEMBER WHEN WE APPROVED THAT IN 2016.
IMPORTANT THAT WE GET THE PROCESS GOING AGAIN.
YEAH. ALL RIGHT, WE'VE ALREADY CONCLUDED AGENDA ITEM NINE A.
AND SO NOW WE ARE MOVING ON TO AGENDA ITEM NINE B, THE NEXT ITEM FOR DISCUSSION AND
[9.B. Approval of Board Operating Protocol Section Revisions]

IS THERE ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? WE WILL NOW PROCEED TO VOTE ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
MOTION CARRIES UNANIMOUSLY SEVEN ZERO.
THANK YOU. WE NOW MOVE ON TO ITEM 10 A.
[10.A. Balanced Literacy Report]
THE BOARD WILL HEAR REPORTS, OUR FIRST REPORT IS FROM DR.KATRINA HASLEY, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR ACADEMIC SERVICES, WITH A BALANCED LITERACY REPORT. DR. HASLEY.
THANK YOU, PRESIDENT RICHARDS.
WE ARE GRATEFUL TONIGHT TO COME BACK TO YOU AGAIN AND GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR BALANCED LITERACY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.
SO I HAVE LAURIE TAYLOR, WHO'S OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR ELEMENTARY ACADEMIC SERVICES, WILL GIVE AN INTRODUCTION.
AND THEN DR. RACHEL BEACHY, OUR ELEMENTARY LITERACY COORDINATOR, WILL GIVE YOU THE REPORT.
WITH THE READING ACADEMY THAT WE EMBARKED ON THIS YEAR WITH OUR FIRST 12 CAMPUSES.
SO YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT WE SHARED OUR PLANS FOR PROJECT LITERACY WITH YOU LAST YEAR AS WE BEGAN THE FIRST OF OUR THREE YEAR PLAN TO CALIBRATE AND STRENGTHEN OUR LITERACY PRACTICES ACROSS THE CLASSROOMS. DON'T WORRY IF YOU NEED A REFRESHER ON THOSE GOALS, AS WE WILL CERTAINLY REVISIT THEM DURING OUR TIME WITH YOU THIS EVENING IN JUST A FEW MINUTES.
SO THIS MIGHT LOOK FAMILIAR BY NOW.
THIS IS OUR COLLABORATIVE TEAM FRAMEWORK AND IT'S BEEN THE CENTER OF SO MUCH OF OUR WORK WITH ESTABLISHING A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY CULTURE IN OUR DISTRICT AND ON OUR CAMPUSES.
HRS HIGH RELIABILITY SCHOOLS HAS ALSO SUPPORTED THAT JOURNEY.
AS WE'VE ALL LEARNED, TOGETHER WHAT A SAFE AND COLLABORATIVE CULTURE IS ALL ABOUT.
SO THIS FRAMEWORK WAS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT STRONG PRACTICES IN CONVERSATIONS AND COLLABORATIVE TEAMS, WHICH ULTIMATELY HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON STUDENT SUCCESS.
SO WE CONTINUE TO WEAVE THESE PLC QUESTIONS INTO ALL THAT WE DO, WHETHER WE'RE PLANNING FOR OUR STUDENTS OR FOR THE ADULTS.
IN THIS YEAR. WE'RE LOOKING MORE CLOSELY AT QUESTION FIVE, WHICH IS A TRUE REFLECTION ON THE LEARNING. IT'S ABOUT TEACHERS INCREASING THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL CONFIDENCE.
SO YEAR TWO, WITH OUR BALANCED LITERACY MODEL AND INCREDIBLE RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE TO SUPPORT IT. WE'RE REALLY PUSHING IN ON QUESTION FIVE, WHICH IS HOW WILL WE INCREASE OUR INSTRUCTIONAL COMPETENCE? SO WE CONTINUE TO BE AMAZED WITH THE ADAPTABILITY AND THE INNOVATION OF OUR TEACHERS AS THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO LEARN AND REFINE THEIR LITERACY INSTRUCTION DURING REMOTE AND DURING FACE TO FACE INSTRUCTION.
SO I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR YOU TO HEAR ALL ABOUT THIS.
RACHEL BEACHY, NOW, OUR ELEMENTARY LITERACY COORDINATOR, TO JUMP IN TO REVIEW OUR GOALS AND THEN SHARE SOME UPDATES WITH YOU.
[00:20:04]
GOOD EVENING, THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING US TO HAVE THIS TIME TO VISIT WITH YOU THIS EVENING IN THE MIDST OF ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON IN THE WORLD.AS WE ALL KNOW, THIS YEAR HAS ABSOLUTELY BROUGHT SOME CHALLENGES.
AND I JUST WANT TO REMIND US AND HELP US ALL REMEMBER THAT IT'S ALSO BROUGHT SOME INCREDIBLE SUCCESSES.
OUR TEACHERS AND OUR STUDENTS, THEY ARE THEY'RE DOING AMAZING THINGS.
AND WE'VE SEEN SOME JUST INCREDIBLE GREATNESS COME OUT OF THAT.
SO I HOPE THAT WHAT I SHARE THIS EVENING IS A GOOD REFLECTION OF THAT FOR YOU GUYS.
IT WAS JUST A SHORT TIME AGO, IN NOVEMBER OF TWENTY NINETEEN, FEELS LIKE A MILLION YEARS AGO THAT WE WERE STANDING HERE GETTING TO SHARE ALL THE NEW HAPPENINGS IN ELEMENTARY LITERACY HERE IN PLANO.
WE HAD NEW STANDARDS, NEW RESOURCES, A NEW COORDINATOR, AND THEN WE ALSO HAD COVID.
HOWEVER, OUR BALANCED LITERACY MODEL HAS TRULY PROVEN STRONG EVEN IN ALL THESE UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS, AND WE DEVELOPED IT KNOWING THE NATIONAL READING PANEL STANDARDS.
THE FIVE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF EFFECTIVE READING, INSTRUCTION, LITERACY INSTRUCTION, PHONEMIC AWARENESS, PHONICS, FLUENCY, VOCABULARY AND COMPREHENSION WERE CRITICAL TO OUR BALANCED LITERACY PROGRAM.
AND NOW WE NOT ONLY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE MORE PROFICIENT IN THESE COMPONENTS, WE ALSO HAVE OUR STATE MANDATED READING ACADEMIES THAT ARE LEADING OUR TEACHERS THROUGH THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING, WHICH IS DIRECTLY IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR MODEL IN THOSE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS. JUST AS A QUICK OVERVIEW, OUR GOALS JUST A YEAR AGO WHEN WE HAD IN AUGUST OF 2019, WE STARTED OUR PROJECT LITERACY TRAIN, THE TRAINER MODEL, TO SUPPORT OUR 45 CAMPUSES, LEARNING ALL THE NEW AROUND LITERACY.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE WANTED OUR CAMPUSES TO UNDERSTAND AND IMPLEMENT INSTRUCTION FOCUSED AROUND THE NEW STANDARDS.
WE ALSO WANTED OUR CAMPUSES TO UNDERSTAND AND IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE LITERACY INSTRUCTION, GUIDED BY THAT BALANCED LITERACY MODEL, WHICH AGAIN WAS DESIGNED WITH THE RESEARCH OF THE NATIONAL READING PANEL AND [INAUDIBLE] RESEARCH.
WE IMPLEMENTED A NEW SYSTEM FOR READING RECORDS ACROSS THE DISTRICTS AND WANTED OUR CAMPUSES TO UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO USE THIS FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TO ENSURE THAT NOT ONLY OUR INSTRUCTIONAL EFFICACY WAS GROWING, BUT ALSO OUR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
AND FINALLY, WE INTEGRATED SOME OF OUR READING AND WRITING NEWLY ADOPTED RESOURCES INTO OUR PLANO ISD UNIT PLANS TO SUPPORT THE ALIGNMENT TO THOSE NEW STANDARDS.
AND THIS WAS ALL JUST YEAR ONE.
AND WE DIDN'T EVEN GET A FULL YEAR OF IT, BUT WE DIDN'T STOP TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR OUR STUDENTS. SO WE GOT TO OUR SECOND YEAR OF IMPLEMENTING THIS NEW PLAN OF ALL THE NEW, WHICH IS JUST THIS YEAR, WE WERE IN A GOOD PLACE TO CONTINUE OUR THREE YEAR PLAN.
OUR FOCUS THIS YEAR WAS ON CONTINUING TO DEVELOP THAT UNDERSTANDING OF BEST PRACTICES AND LITERACY INSTRUCTION AND TO INTEGRATE MORE AND MORE OF OUR NEW ADOPTION RESOURCES INTO OUR UNIT PLANS AND TO SHIFT THE FOCUS OF OUR SUPPORT AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL FROM PLANNING TO THE ACTUAL IMPLEMENTATION OF BEST PRACTICES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM TO SUPPORT TEACHERS AND INCREASE OUR STUDENT LEARNING.
OUR INCREDIBLE CURRICULUM TEAM HAS SPENT MULTIPLE HOURS PLANNING WITH TEAMS ACROSS THE DISTRICT, AND THIS YEAR WE WORKED TO SEE HOW THAT PLANNING WOULD TRULY IMPACTED THE INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES.
THE VIRTUAL ACCESSIBILITY THAT IS PART OF OUR WORLD TODAY HAS MADE THIS GOAL ACHIEVABLE.
WE ARE ABLE TO JUMP AROUND TO CAMPUSES, WITH JUST THE CLICK OF A BUTTON, AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING TO FOCUS MORE ON THIS PIECE OF OUR COLLABORATIVE TEAM FRAMEWORK, WHICH IS THE BOTTOM OF IT, THE TEACHING AND LEARNING CYCLE.
THROUGH MODELING LESSONS IN CLASSROOMS, TEACHERS SHARING MODEL LESSONS THROUGH VIDEOS, DEVELOPING EXEMPLAR LESSON PLANNING GUIDES, SUPPORTING VIRTUAL ACCESSIBILITY WHEN NEEDED, AND SHARING ALL THE RESOURCES THAT WE'VE PUT TOGETHER WITH JUST THE CLICK OF A BUTTON.
TEACHERS HAVE BEEN SO OPEN TO LETTING US INTO THEIR CLASSROOMS TO VIDEO OURSELVES OR THEM WORKING WITH STUDENTS, AS WELL AS SHARING RESOURCES WITH EACH OTHER ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
VIDEOS OF THEMSELVES, THINGS THEY'VE TRIED, THINGS THEY ARE DOING THAT ARE WORKING WITH THEIR KIDS. SO WE'VE ALMOST HAVE WE JUST HAVE CREATED AN INCREDIBLE COLLABORATIVE TEAM ACROSS THE WHOLE DISTRICT.
OUR BIG FOCUS THIS YEAR WITH THE INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT HAS BEEN TO INTEGRATE MORE OF OUR NEW ADOPTION MATERIALS INTO OUR UNIT PLANS.
SO LAST JUNE 2020, EVEN IN THE MIDST OF NOT KNOWING WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN THE NEXT DAY, 16 TEACHERS FROM ACROSS THE CAMPUS GOT TOGETHER VIRTUALLY, AND WE VETTED EVERY SINGLE PART OF OUR NEW ADOPTION RESOURCES AND THEN THEY INTEGRATED THEM INTO THEIR GRADE LEVELS. AND THIS YEAR, WE WERE ABLE TO SEAMLESSLY CONTINUE ALONG THAT THREE YEAR PLAN WITH THE INTEGRATION OF THESE MATERIALS ARE INTO READING AND [INAUDIBLE] RESOURCES IN
[00:25:01]
GRADES K THROUGH FIVE, WHICH INCLUDE EXPLICIT, SYSTEMATIC FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS AND PHONICS INSTRUCTION AS REQUIRED BY HOUSE BILL THREE AND TEKS FOCUSED AND ALIGNED READING AND WORKSHOP LESSONS IN GRADES K THROUGH FIVE.THIS INTEGRATION HAS PROVED INVALUABLE WITH OUR FACE TO FACE AND SCHOOL AT HOME STUDENTS, BECAUSE OUR ADOPTION RESOURCES ARE ACCESSIBLE IN BOTH ENVIRONMENTS TO BOTH OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. AND THANKS TO THE APPROVAL OF YOU ALL, WE NOW HAVE EVEN MORE LITERACY RESOURCES THAT ARE FOCUSED SPECIFICALLY ON THOSE EFFECTIVE COMPONENTS OF OUR BALANCED LITERACY MODEL AND AGAIN, ACCESSIBLE FOR STUDENTS AT HOME AND IN THE CLASSROOM.
OUR TEACHERS LOVE THESE NEW RESOURCES AND WE CAN EVEN SEE THIS LOVE THROUGH THEIR USE OF THEM IN THE CLASSROOM. JUST LAST WEEK, WE HAD OVER SEVEN AND REMEMBER, IT WAS THE WEEK AFTER ALL THE THINGS, WE HAD OVER SEVEN THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED BOOKS READ AT HOME THROUGH OUR NEW LITERACY READER, DIGITAL LITERACY FOOTPRINT'S DIGITAL READER, WHICH IS OUR GUIDED READING LEVEL READER SYSTEM.
AND THAT JUST SHOWS YOU THESE TEACHERS HAVE REALLY, REALLY TAKEN THIS AND GONE WITH IT.
WE'VE ALSO BEEN ABLE TO REALLY FOCUS AND TARGET OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE EASE OF ACCESSIBILITY, TEACHERS ARE ABLE TO WATCH VIDEOS.
THEY'RE ABLE TO JOIN US LIVE WITH JUST THE CLICK OF A BUTTON.
THERE ARE SOME LEARNING SESSIONS WE OFFERED LAST JULY, AUGUST AND THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND THEY'VE NOT ONLY ALLOWED OUR TEACHERS TO GROW IN THEIR EFFECTIVE PRACTICES, IT'S ALSO BEEN A GREAT COLLABORATION AS WE'VE GOTTEN TO SERVE AS A SOUNDING BOARD, AS THE CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT AND DEVELOPING APPROPRIATE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR OUR CAMPUSES.
MY TEAM HAS JUST BEEN PHENOMENAL IN REACHING OUT TO TEACHERS AND COMMUNICATING WITH THEM AND DEVELOPING AND CREATING THINGS AS THEY NEEDED THEM, BECAUSE BACK IN AUGUST, WE DIDN'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT ALL WE WERE GOING TO NEED.
SO WE'VE REALLY BEEN ABLE TO SUPPORT THAT AS WE GO.
SO I DIDN'T BRING VIDEOS THIS TIME, BUT I DID BRING PICTURES AND I DO WANT TO SHOWCASE WHAT WE'RE SEEING IN SCHOOLS. I KNOW I SHARED A LITTLE AROUND THE VIRTUAL ACCESSIBILITY OF OUR RESOURCES, BUT I ALSO WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT WE STILL SEE STUDENTS WITH BOOKS IN HAND AND WRITING ON PAPER WITH PENCILS.
SCHOOL HAS NOT COMPLETELY CHANGED ITS LOOK.
IN THIS SECOND GRADE CLASSROOM, STUDENTS WERE FOLLOWING THE GUIDED WRITING MODEL OF THEIR TEACHER AND PRODUCING THEIR OWN WRITING AROUND A STORY THEY'D WRITE ABOUT SNOW.
THIS WAS BEFORE WE HAD A SNOW BREAK.
IN THIS FIRST GRADE CLASSROOM, YOU CAN SEE THE TEACHER STILL SAFELY PULLING STUDENTS INTO GUIDED READING AND WRITING GROUPS.
WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE IS THEIR BOOKS AND PAPER DOCUMENTS IN FRONT OF THEM THAT THEY'RE USING TO READ AND REFLECT AS THEY READ AT THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL LEVELS.
WE ALSO SEE TEACHERS CONTINUING TO SUPPORT LEARNING WITH INTERACTIVE ANCHOR CHARTS DESIGNED AROUND STUDENT THINKING.
IN A KINDERGARTEN IN KINDERGARTEN OUR BILINGUAL AND MONOLINGUAL STUDENTS ARE USING THEIR JOURNALS TO BECOME AUTHORS, AND THEY'RE STILL WRITING WITH PENCILS AND ILLUSTRATING WITH CRAYONS AND MARKERS.
WE'VE EVEN SEEN A RETURN OF BOOK BOXES FOR STUDENTS IN WHICH IN WHICH IN THEIR CLASSROOM THEY HAVE A BOOK OR A BAG AT THEIR TABLES.
AND IT CONTAINS BOOKS THAT ARE ON THEIR READING LEVEL, AS WELL AS HIGH INTEREST TEXTS THAT THEY CAN READ THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
IN THIS FINAL CLASSROOM SLIDE, STUDENTS CONTINUE TO BUILD LANGUAGE THROUGH SPEAKING, READING AND WRITING, AND STUDENTS HAVE BOOKS IN THEIR HANDS AS THEY PARTICIPATE IN SHARED READING WITHIN THEIR CLASSROOMS. AND THIS IS A PRACTICE OF USING THIS PRACTICE OF USING PHYSICAL RESOURCES IS NOT LIMITED TO OUR FACE TO FACE CLASSROOMS. CAMPUSES HAVE ESTABLISHED INCREDIBLE PICK UP SYSTEMS FOR OUR STILL SCHOOL AT HOME STUDENTS WHERE PARENTS AND FAMILIES DRIVE THROUGH THE CIRCLE DRIVE AND PICK UP WHAT THEY NEED. AND THERE'S EVEN BEEN TEACHERS THAT HAVE DROPPED OFF THINGS AT HOMES TO STUDENTS WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE THE ACCESSIBILITY TO COME PICK IT UP.
DESPITE THE DIFFICULTIES, OUR STUDENTS CONTINUE TO LEARN AND GROW AND OUR TEACHERS NEVER STOP DOING THE SAME AS THEY WORK THROUGH SO MANY CHALLENGES AND DO WHAT'S BEST FOR OUR STUDENTS. AS I COULD INTERJECT JUST A LITTLE THING, CAN WE PUT SOME? SHE JOBS UP THERE TOO? ALL THE JOBS WHERE HE'S.
OH, WELL, THE LITTLE POSTER THAT SHOWS, YOU KNOW, HE HELPS CLEAN OUR TEETH.
HE MAKES BREAD, NEED A FEW SHE'S.
I'LL LET THEM KNOW. I NEVER EVEN NOTICED THAT.
MAYBE IT WAS THEIR SITE WORD FOR THE WEEK.
SO NOW THAT TAKES US TO YEAR THREE, WHICH IS NEXT YEAR, AND WE STILL GOT A GOOD PLAN AND WE'RE STILL ABLE TO PUT IT IN PLACE.
AND AS LAURIE TAYLOR ALWAYS, ALWAYS SAYS, WE FEEL LIKE WE'RE STILL IN A REALLY GOOD SPOT.
AS ALWAYS, OUR JUNE CURRICULUM WORK WILL BE FOCUSED ON CONTINUING TO REVIEW THE ALIGNMENT OF OUR LITERACY RESOURCES AND WHAT WORKS FOR STUDENTS LEARNING.
WE HAVE OVER 90 TEACHERS FROM ACROSS THE DISTRICT WHO HAVE APPLIED TO BE CURRICULUM WRITERS THIS SUMMER. I JUST THINK THAT THIS IS BECAUSE IT'S THE MOST INTEREST WE'VE EVER HAD. AND I JUST THINK IT'S BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN SO ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE THIS YEAR.
[00:30:04]
AGAIN, WITH JUST A CLICK OF A BUTTON, WE CAN JUMP INTO PLANNINGS AND JOIN TEACHERS.WE WILL ALSO BE SELECTING AND IMPLEMENTING A NEW EARLY LITERACY SCREENER, WHICH WILL ALSO PROVIDE VALUABLE DATA TO OUR EARLY LITERACY TEACHERS AND CONNECTS TO DIRECTLY TO THAT FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS INSTRUCTION AND THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING, READING THAT TEACHERS ARE LEARNING THROUGH THE READING ACADEMIES.
AND FINALLY, WE KNOW THAT OUR STATE ASSESSMENT WILL BE GOING UNDER SOME UNDERGOING SOME SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.
AND WE WANT TO STAY ON TOP OF THOSE ADJUSTMENTS, ENSURING OUR INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND STUDENT PROGRESS ALIGN WITH THE RIGOR OF THAT STAAR TEST AS IT MOVES FROM ASSESSING OUR NEW STANDARDS ONLY NEXT YEAR AND THEN BEING ONLY 75 PERCENT MULTIPLE-CHOICE THE FOLLOWING YEAR. SO THAT'S KIND OF A WRAP UP OF THE EXCITING THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING WITHIN THE CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT AND OUR CAMPUSES, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.
SO FINALLY, LET'S TALK ABOUT READING ACADEMY.
I'M NOT GOING TO PULL THE COVERS OVER IT AND SAY THAT THIS WAS EASY WHEN IT STARTED IN AUGUST. THIS NEW INITIATIVE WAS CERTAINLY PART OF THE CHALLENGE COLUMN WHEN WE ALL CAME BACK TO SCHOOL. THERE IS JUST A LOT HAPPENING.
AND AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IT WAS ONE MORE THING.
BUT WE'RE ON A WE'RE NOW OVER HALFWAY THROUGH THIS LEARNING AND OUR 12 READING ROOKIE CAMPUSES, AS WE CALL THEM, ARE ON MODULE NINE OF 12 IN THEIR LEARNING.
AS THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR TWO READING ACADEMY, OUR TWO READING ACADEMY COHORT FACILITATORS, TARA WELCH AND DR.
THEIR LEADERSHIP HAS JUST BEEN ESSENTIAL IN THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROGRAM.
OUR TEACHERS, SPECIALISTS AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE GAINING VALUABLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENCE OF TEACHING READING AND THIS IS DIRECTLY IMPACTING OUR STUDENTS.
I WAS JUST ON A CAMPUS LAST WEEK WHERE I GOT TO VISIT WITH AN EXPERIENCED AND SUCCESSFUL FIRST GRADE TEACHER WHO'S IN THE READING ACADEMY.
SHE COULDN'T STOP RAVING ABOUT THE KNOWLEDGE SHE HAD RECEIVED FROM THIS PROGRAM.
SHE ALSO SHARED THINGS SHE IS CURRENTLY USING WITH HER STUDENTS TO INCREASE THEIR EARLY LITERACY SKILLS. AND SHE HAD GOTTEN THEM DIRECTLY FROM HER READING ACADEMY LEARNING.
HER EXCITEMENT WAS NOT ONLY EVIDENT IN HER INSTRUCTION, IT WAS EVIDENT IN HER STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. SO HERE IS SOME OF THE PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK, I'LL JUST GIVE YOU A MINUTE TO LOOK OVER IT. FOR OUR READING ACADEMY PARTICIPANTS FROM THIS YEAR.
YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PERSON WISHING IT WAS MORE IN BOOK FORM, PEOPLE LEARN DIFFERENTLY, AND SO WHAT ARE YOU CONSIDERING THERE? THEY SURE DO. THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
SO THEY ACTUALLY DO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING BOOK THAT TEA HAS PROMISED US IS BEING CREATED. I'M JUST NOT SURE THAT IT GOT CREATED THE FIRST ROUND.
SO THAT WILL BE SOMETHING THAT WE'LL DEFINITELY BE ABLE TO SHARE.
AND AND KIND OF ALONG THE LINES OF THAT QUESTION, THESE 12 CAMPUSES THAT HAVE GONE THROUGH IT THE FIRST TIME, BECAUSE ACCESSIBILITY TO THEM HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE, WE CERTAINLY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM AT THIS LEVEL, KNOWING THAT THEY ARE THE INNOVATORS AND THE ONES WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS.
SO WE WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE MORE RESOURCES AS THEY'RE CREATED AND THEY'RE AVAILABLE TO US. SO HOPEFULLY YOU SEE FROM WHAT THEY SAID THAT IT'S VERY STUDENT FOCUSED, THEY REALLY ARE TURNING IT AROUND AND SEEING HOW THE PROGRAM DIRECTLY CAN IMPACT THEIR STUDENTS. I THINK THAT'S BEEN AN INCREDIBLE PART OF THE READING ACADEMY IS THE TEACHERS DO GET LEARNING, BUT THEY ALSO PROVIDE THEM RESOURCES SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO AND FIND WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT AND WHAT THEY WANT TO USE WITH STUDENTS.
THEY PROVIDE IT RIGHT THERE FOR THEM THROUGH THE MODULES.
AND IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A VITAL PART OF OUR LITERACY PROGRAM MOVING FORWARD.
SO NEXT YEAR IS OUR YEAR TWO, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE 18 CAMPUSES INCLUDED.
YOU'LL NOTICE THAT SOME OF OUR BILINGUAL CAMPUSES ARE STARTING THIS YEAR.
BACK WHEN READING ACADEMIES WERE PUT TOGETHER LAST YEAR, WE WEREN'T SURE THAT THE BI-LITERACY MODULES WERE GOING TO BE READY YET.
THAT'S WHY WE DIDN'T START THEM IN OUR FIRST ROUND.
SO NOW WE HAVE OUR BIGGEST GROUP COMING THROUGH THIS NEXT YEAR, 18 CAMPUSES.
AND WE'RE JUST REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE LEARNING, ESPECIALLY BASED ON WHAT WE'VE GOTTEN TO LEARN THIS YEAR WITH OUR FIRST GROUP OF COHORTS.
SO THIS IS MY QUOTE YOU SAW AT THE LAST TIME WE WERE HERE.
IT'S ACTUALLY AMAZING. WE LISTEN TO PHIL [INAUDIBLE] SPEAK TODAY ABOUT PROFICIENCY SKILLS, AND HE USES THIS QUOTE AS WELL.
SO IT MADE ME FEEL GOOD. WE, AS ALWAYS, WE WILL CONTINUE TO COLLABORATE AND LISTEN WITH TEACHERS, SPECIALISTS AND ADMINISTRATORS AND WILL CONTINUE TO REVIEW AND REFINE AND ADJUST OUR PRACTICES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EVERY CHILD HERE IN PLANO ISD, TO TARGET THEIR AREAS OF GROWTH AND DO BETTER EVERY DAY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
I REALLY APPRECIATE GETTING TO SHARE AND HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE AMAZING THINGS HAPPENING WITH YOU GUYS. AND THANKS FOR LISTENING.
SO WE HAVE 14 CAMPUSES TO DO IN PHASE THREE?
[00:35:01]
15 ACTUALLY WILL BE LEFT, YEAH [INAUDIBLE], WE INCLUDED THE [INAUDIBLE].OK, SO THAT MIGHT HAVE JUST OF IT, BUT YES.
AND I DID WANT TO ASK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE WRITING PORTION, BECAUSE THAT'S BEEN A PASSION/PEEVE OF MINE FOR A LONG TIME.
AND SO IF SOMEONE WANTED TO SEE THE WORK PRODUCT OF A KINDERGARTNER IN WRITING, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? SO WE ACTUALLY HAVE GOTTEN TEACHERS TO FOLLOW.
WE DID MORE WRITING OUR LESSONS PRIOR TO THIS YEAR, AND NOW THEY'RE FOLLOWING THE VERY SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTION, WRITING INSTRUCTION FROM OUR HMH RESOURCES BECAUSE THEY ARE ALIGNED TO OUR STANDARDS.
SO WHAT YOU'LL SEE IS KINDERGARTNERS GOING THROUGH THE WRITING PROCESS ALMOST TWO TIMES EVERY UNIT. SO EVERY SIX WEEKS, THAT'S PART OF OUR CURRICULUM DOCUMENTS AND IT'S ACTUALLY KINDERGARTEN THROUGH FIFTH GRADE.
THEY ACTUALLY TAKE STUDENTS THROUGH THE ENTIRE WRITING PROCESS WITH DIFFERENT GENRES, ONCE OR TWICE EVERY UNIT THAT THEY GO THROUGH.
SO THEY HAVE INCREDIBLE PRODUCT OF GOING FULLY THROUGH THE SHARING IN KINDERGARTEN AND THEN THE ACTUAL PUBLISHING AND FIRST THROUGH FIFTH GRADE FOR STUDENTS TO SHOW.
AND SO THAT WORK PRODUCT WOULD LOOK THE SAME FROM CAMPUS TO CAMPUS TO CAMPUS, WHETHER THEY'RE HIGH, LOW SOCIOECONOMIC OR LOW.
AND WILL WE EVER TEACH DIAGRAMING SENTENCES AGAIN? YOU KNOW WHAT'S WONDERFUL? I LEARNED THAT WAY AS WELL, THAT OUR FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS INSTRUCTION THAT WE'RE NOW IMPLEMENTING GOES IN DEEPER TO SO MUCH MORE OF THAT.
SO ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T SEEN DIAGRAMING SENTENCES YET, WE DEFINITELY ARE DOING THAT MORE EXPLICIT, SYSTEMATIC INSTRUCTION WITH GRAMMAR THROUGH OUR EDITING STANDARDS AND THEN THROUGH THOSE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS INSTRUCTION, SO.
AND SO HOW WILL THIS WORK THEN MOVE FORWARD INTO THE UPPER GRADES? WHAT WILL MIDDLE SCHOOL LOOK LIKE DIFFERENTLY? HIGH SCHOOL LOOK DIFFERENTLY? WELL, LET'S HOPE THAT EVEN JUST OUR FIRST THROUGH OUR KINDERGARTEN, THROUGH SECOND GRADE STUDENTS GETTING THESE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS WILL DEVELOP SO MUCH MORE WHEN WE SEE OUR THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS PRODUCING THIS.
AND THEN WE REALLY ARE HELPING THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS OUT.
THEY CAN'T TURN AND SAY, WHAT DID THEY TEACH IN ELEMENTARY ANYMORE? RIGHT. BECAUSE WE REALLY ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP THOSE SKILLS.
THE INCREDIBLE PART ABOUT OUR NEW READING LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARDS IS THAT THEY'RE VERTICALLY ALIGNED.
KINDER THROUGH FIFTH GRADE HAS SO MANY OF THE SAME STANDARDS.
SO WE'RE DEVELOPING PROFICIENCY IN EVERY GRADE LEVEL ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH EVEN TWELFTH GRADE. SOME OF THIS STUFF GOES THROUGH ENGLISH FOUR SO.
SO WILL WE SEE THE RETURN OF THE RED PENS? OH, GOSH, I HOPE NOT.
I HOPE SO. MY KIDS SKATED THROUGH WITH ALMOST NO RED PENS, AND I THINK IT WOULD BE ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW, [INAUDIBLE].
YOU HAVE TO GIVE PEOPLE YOU KNOW CORRECTIVE CRITICISM SO THEY CAN IMPROVE.
SO WE DO PULL OUR, WE DO REVIEW OUR STUDENTS WORK WITH THEM, OBVIOUSLY, AND GO BACK.
I THINK THAT WE'LL SEE MORE OF STUDENTS BEING MONITORING THEIR OWN LEARNING WITH CHECKLISTS AND THE TEACHER REMINDING THEM, YOU'VE LEARNED THESE SKILLS FOR YOUR WRITING.
DON'T FORGET TO DO IT, AS OPPOSED TO WRITING WITH A RED PEN, MAYBE A GREEN PEN.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS I CAN HELP? I'M JUST GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT MORE.
RACHEL, DO YOU KNOW FOR THE FIRST YEAR YOU HAVE 12 SCHOOL CAMPUSES AND THE SECOND YEAR WE'RE GONNA DO 18.
IN THE LAST YEAR. WE'RE GOING TO 15.
WHEN WE JUMP TO 18, GOING FROM 12 TO 18.
YOU HAVE SIX EXTRA. IS THAT MUCH MORE WORK? I MEAN, HOW IS IT? SO THE WAY TEA SET THIS UP IS OUR COHORT LEADERS CAN HAVE UP TO THREE COHORTS GOING AT A TIME AND UP TO 100 PEOPLE WITHIN EACH COHORT.
SO BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS THAT WE HAVE TO GET THROUGH ALL OF OUR COHORTS, WE HAD TO MAKE A BIG CHUNK IN THE MIDDLE.
WE ARE FORTUNATE THAT WE KIND OF HAD TO GOT A SMALLER GROUP THIS FIRST TIME WE THOUGHT MAYBE TEA MIGHT BE WORKING OUT SOME KINKS, YOU KNOW, AND WE'RE ALL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS. IT'S ALL THROUGH THE CAMPUS PLATFORM AND GO THROUGH THESE.
BUT I ALSO THINK THAT OUR COHORT LEADERS ARE READY FOR THE CHALLENGE BECAUSE THEY'VE GOTTEN THE EXPERIENCE ALREADY OF A FULL YEAR WITH THESE FIRST 12 CAMPUSES.
AND, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE STUDENTS ARE DOING WHEN TEACHERS DO A READING ASSESSMENT FOR EACH STUDENT, THEY PUT CHILDREN IN READING LEVELS.
ARE THEY STILL TAKING THE STUDENTS TO TAKING READING BOOKS HOME? THEY'RE STILL TAKING, RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY, YES. SO WE NOT ONLY ARE ABLE TO PUT BOOKS IN HANDS, WE ALSO HAVE THOSE LEVEL READERS DIGITALLY AS WELL THROUGH OUR LEVEL PROGRAMS. SO THEY'RE GETTING THEM IN BOOK BAGS.
THEY'RE GETTING IN VIRTUALLY IF THAT'S AN EASIER WAY FOR THEM TO ACCESS THEM.
AND EVEN OUR TEXTS THAT THEY USE FOR JUST READING, NOT EVEN THEIR ON LEVEL READING, BUT THEY'RE READING WORKSHOP, THEIR COMPREHENSION AND STUFF IS IN A CONSUMABLE BOOK AS WELL.
AND SO THEY GET TO HAVE THAT AT HOME AS WELL.
NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK AND LOOKING BACK AT THE PROCESS QUESTIONS.
NUMBER TWO IS HOW WILL WE KNOW STUDENTS ARE LEARNING AND THREE IS HOW WE RESPOND WHEN
[00:40:02]
THEY AREN'T? YES. WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE FOR OUR AT HOME KIDS? I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT COME UP.IT LOOKS LIKE IT DOES IN THE CLASSROOM.
IT LOOKS LIKE SMALL GROUP DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION.
THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE TOOL THAT WE HAVE IN OUR TOOLBOX TO BE ABLE TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHO ARE MISSING THINGS, WHO MAY HAVE SOME GAPS.
THAT IS A PROCESS THAT WE'VE BEEN IMPLEMENTING IN ELEMENTARY EVEN PRIOR TO ME COMING TO THIS DISTRICT. AND THAT IS THE PROCESS THAT WE'RE USING.
SO STUDENTS ARE GETTING ASSESSED STILL FORMALLY.
WE'RE STILL DOING READING RECORDS.
WE'VE MADE THAT VIRTUALLY ACCESSIBLE FOR THEM.
AND TEACHERS ARE STILL PULLING STUDENTS IN SMALL GROUPS.
THEY'RE STILL GETTING THAT INSTRUCTION THEY NEED AND IT CAN BE TARGETED DEPENDING ON WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE. SO ARE YOU SEEING A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE THAT ARE ON CAMPUS AND THOSE THAT AREN'T RELATIVE TO PROGRESS? I'VE ONLY SEEN THEM ALL GROUPED TOGETHER, SO I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT, I'M SORRY, BUT I HAVE SEEN BOTH FORMATS DOING THE SAME TYPE OF INSTRUCTION.
SO THAT IS A CONSISTENCY AT LEAST THAT WE SEE.
SO I CAN GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT.
YEAH. LET ME PUT A DIVIDER HERE BETWEEN MY NEXT COMMENT.
OK. BETWEEN THAT AND MY NEXT COMMENT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
THE COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT UTILIZING ESSENTIALLY UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE THESE COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITIES.
SO ARE YOU SEEING OR HAVE YOU SEEN THAT THIS HAS BEEN ABLE THAT YOU'VE HAD BIGGER COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITIES WITHIN THE DISTRICT CAMPUSES WORKING WITH OTHER CAMPUSES? IS THAT BEEN ONE OF THE BYPRODUCTS OF THE COVID GENERATION? 100 PERCENT.
WE HAVE DOCUMENTS FULL OF VIDEOS.
WE HAVE A GOOGLE DRIVE THAT TEACHERS JUST SEND US SHARED RESOURCES AND WE HAVE A GOOGLE CLASSROOM FOR EVERY SINGLE GRADE LEVEL THAT WE JUST EVERY DAY.
ALL OF US ARE DROPPING STUFF IN THERE FOR TEACHERS TO SHARE.
IT'S AMAZING. SO, SARAH, FOR THE FIRST EIGHT YEARS OF THE TEN YEARS I WAS ON THIS BOARD, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT IT QUITE A BIT, WAS HOW DO YOU SCALE UP A DISTRICT? AND THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING THAT'S COMING OUT OF THIS COVID SITUATION THAT WE JUST NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN IMPLEMENT THROUGHOUT DISTRICT WIDE WITH ALL DISCIPLINES. RACHEL AND LAURIE, I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU AND KATRINA TO THE TEAM, YOU KNOW, THE BALANCED LITERACY WORK IS SO IMPORTANT.
EARLY LITERACY IS THE FOUNDATION OF LEARNING.
YOU KNOW, I JUST NO QUESTION AND TO HAVE READING ACADEMY LAUNCH THE FIRST YEAR THIS YEAR DURING A PANDEMIC IS, YOU KNOW, JUST FOR EVERYONE'S POINT OF REFERENCE, EVERY TEACHER AND ADMINISTRATOR WHO IS A PARTICIPANT IN THE READING ACADEMY HAS TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ADDITIONAL FIFTY SEVEN HOURS OF TRAINING, AND THEN THEY HAVE TO SEND IN EVIDENCE OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND THAT EVIDENCE HAS TO GET GRADED AND SENT BACK.
IT'S A REALLY INTENSE PROCESS.
IT'S SUPPOSED TO TAKE ABOUT 11 MONTHS FOR THEM FROM START TO FINISH.
FIFTY SEVEN HOURS ON TOP OF THEIR JOBS EVERY DAY THEY'RE HAVING TO DO ALL THIS EXTRA.
AND, YOU KNOW, THE FIRST GROUP, YOU KNOW, WE'VE LISTENED AND, YOU KNOW, THEY THINK IT'S GREAT LEARNING, BUT IT HAS BEEN A TASK.
SO IF THERE'S ANY READING ACADEMY, TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS WATCHING RIGHT NOW, WE KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DO.
AND WE ASKED TEA IF THEY WOULD EXTEND THE TIMELINE OF THE LEGISLATION OF HOW LONG WE HAVE TO GET THIS DONE. AND WE HAVE THREE YEARS TO TRAIN EVERY TEACHER IN READING ACADEMY GRADES K THROUGH THREE, AND THEY WILL NOT EXTEND THE TIMELINE.
AND SO THERE IS NO FLEXIBILITY.
THIS CAME UP YESTERDAY IN A CALL WITH THE COMMISSIONER.
WILL THERE BE ANY EXTENSION BECAUSE OF THIS YEAR? AND THE ANSWER IS NO, THERE WILL NOT BE.
AND WE THINK IT'S GREAT TRAINING.
WE THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.
WE THINK IT'S RIGHT IN LINE WITH BALANCED LITERACY, BUT IT IS A HEAVY LIFT.
AND SO THANKS TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF TEACHERS IN THIS ENDEAVOR, BECAUSE IT IS A BIG, BIG JOB AND OUR TEACHERS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB WITH IT AND OUR PRINCIPALS.
THANKS, RACHEL. THANK YOU. ARE THERE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I JUST WANT TO ADD TO WHAT SARA SAID, I DO WANT TO TELL RACHEL AND ALSO, LAURIE, THAT YOU DID A REALLY GOOD JOB BECAUSE READING ACADEMY IS SO IMPORTANT AND READING AND WRITING ARE TWO VERY IMPORTANT SKILLS.
[00:45:04]
NEXT, WE WILL HEAR FROM DR.[10.B. 2020 - 2021 Professional Learning Update]
BETH BROCKMAN WITH THE 2020 2021 PROFESSIONAL LEARNING UPDATE.THIS EVENING, I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE YOU AN UPDATE ON PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN PLANO ISD, AND INTRODUCE YOU TO IVAN CANTU, OUR DIRECTOR LEADING THESE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS.
GOOD EVENING. PRESIDENT RICHARDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT BONSER.
THANK YOU FOR PROVIDING US A TIME TO GIVE YOU A GENERAL UPDATE ON PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN PLANO ISD DURING THE 2020 2021 SCHOOL YEAR.
MORE THAN EVER THIS YEAR HAS REALLY SHOWN THAT THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM IS TO SUPPORT, FACILITATE AND COLLABORATE WITH CAMPUSES AND DEPARTMENTS TO SUPPORT TEACHING AND LEARNING AND MOVING FORWARD THE DISTRICT'S VISION AND STRATEGIC PLAN.
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THIS YEAR, WE HAD TO SHIFT OUR FOCUS, BUT OUR PRIORITIES REMAINED ON MAKING SURE WE WERE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS, MAKING OURSELVES AVAILABLE, ENSURING ACCESSIBILITY, WHICH FORCED US TO PRIORITIZE OUR PREVIOUS WORK AND RETHINK HOW WE WE'RE PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING.
AND PROVIDING CONTINUOUS SUPPORT, MAKING SURE WE'RE AVAILABLE AS THOUGHT DESIGN AND FACILITATION PARTNERS TO ALL.
THIS EVENING, I'LL BE SHARING JUST A FEW ITEMS. THERE'S A LOT MORE ON THE SLIDES AND A LOT MORE THAN OTHER DEPARTMENTS HAVE SHARED OR WILL BE SHARING. BUT THE WORK I'LL BE HIGHLIGHTING DEMONSTRATES HOW DEPARTMENTS HAVE COLLABORATED TO SUPPORT OUR STAFF AND MOVE FORWARD WITH OUR WORK.
SO WE'LL START WITH INSTRUCTION.
OUR PRIMARY FOCUS HAS BEEN SUPPORTING INSTRUCTION, TEACHERS AND SUCCESS IN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS. LAST SUMMER, WE LAUNCHED A MASSIVE COLLABORATIVE EFFORT, THE SUMMER INSPIRE CONFERENCE, OUR FIRST FULLY VIRTUAL CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS.
OVER 1000 TEACHERS PARTICIPATED, EACH ATTENDING THREE SESSIONS ON AVERAGE.
TEACHERS ENJOYED THE CONVENIENCE AND FLEXIBILITY OF LEARNING FROM HOME.
AND WE HAVE SCHEDULED OUR SECOND INSPIRE CONFERENCE, ALSO VIRTUAL THIS JUNE.
ANOTHER MULTI DEPARTMENT COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WAS SUPPORTING THE CO-SEATED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS LED BY ACADEMIC SERVICES OUR CO-SEATING SUPPORT INCLUDED BOTH SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING OPTIONS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WEBSITE CONTAINING HOW TO VIDEOS AND OTHER RESOURCES FOR OUR TEACHERS.
THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES OF CO-SEATING AND ONLINE INSTRUCTION PROMPTED US TO DEVELOP FOCUSED CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AS WELL.
ALONG WITH CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, TEACHERS ALSO RECEIVED SUPPORT FROM SPECIALISTS AND COORDINATORS WHO LED OR CHECKED IN DURING COLLABORATIVE TEAM PLANNING SESSIONS. IN COLLABORATION WITH MULTILINGUAL SERVICES AND SPECIAL EDUCATION, THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM HAS PROVIDED OUR TEACHERS WITH ANOTHER RESOURCE, THE MASTER TEACHER, A COLLECTION OF SELF-PACED COURSES, MANY OF WHICH ARE ROLE SPECIFIC FOR TEACHERS AND PARAPROFESSIONALS.
SINCE OCTOBER OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR, STAFF HAVE COMPLETED OVER 2300 MASTER TEACHER COURSES.
COLLABORATION HAS BEEN THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS AS ACADEMIC SERVICES, SPECIAL EDUCATION, DIGITAL TEACHING AND LEARNING, MULTILINGUAL SERVICES STUDENT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS HAVE BANDED TOGETHER TO OFFER FREQUENT, ONGOING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR EDUCATORS AND TO MAKE MANY OF THESE AVAILABLE AS RECORDED SESSIONS FOR LATER VIEWING. SUPPORTING OUR TEACHERS ENSURES QUALITY INSTRUCTION AND HOPEFULLY INCREASES TEACHER RETENTION.
OUR SUPPORT THIS YEAR WAS MOSTLY LIMITED TO VIRTUAL ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING OUR INTERACTIVE ONLINE TEACHER WELCOME EVENTS THAT MANY OF YOU ATTENDED.
OTHER NEW TEACHERS SUPPORTS HAVE INCLUDED FREQUENT CONTENT FOCUSED SESSIONS FROM ACADEMIC SERVICES AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND ONLINE [INAUDIBLE] TEACHER HANDBOOK AND A NEW SPOTLIGHT SERIES FOR FIRST AND SECOND YEAR TEACHERS INTRODUCING A DIFFERENT DEPARTMENT OR TOPIC TO TEACHERS EACH MONTH.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TO MAKE SURE OUR MENTORS WERE PREPARED TO SUPPORT NEW TEACHERS AND HAD THE SUPPORT THEY NEEDED THEMSELVES.
IN ADDITION TO THE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY OFFERED, PROFESSIONAL LEARNING CREATED NEW RESOURCES FOR OUR MENTORS, INCLUDING MONTHLY PLANS FOR MENTOR SUPPORT DEVELOPED BY CURRENT MENTORS AND MOST RECENTLY, THE MENTOR LUNCH BREAK, WHERE WE JUST BASICALLY ALLOWED TIME FOR MENTORS TO COME TOGETHER DURING THEIR LUNCH BREAK TO DISCUSS HOW THEY'RE SUPPORTING THEIR TEACHERS.
THIS YEAR, OUR MENTORS HAVE SUPPORTED FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE NEW TEACHERS.
184 OF THOSE ARE BRAND NEW TO THE PROFESSION.
IN ADDITION TO THAT, THEY ARE ALSO SUPPORTING ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY FIVE SECOND YEAR TEACHERS. SO AS EVERYONE IS AWARE, THIS YEAR, WE HAD TO PIVOT OUR EFFORTS TO ADDRESS DIGITAL LEARNING NEEDS.
WE SOUGHT FEEDBACK FROM TEACHERS, CAMPUSES AND DEPARTMENTS AND CONTINUALLY ADJUSTED THOSE OFFERINGS BASED ON WHAT WAS BEING REQUESTED.
DIGITAL TEACHING, AND LEARNING TEAM WORKED AROUND THE CLOCK AND PARTNERED WITH US IN PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TO PROVIDE OVER ONE HUNDRED SESSIONS IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE OUR TEACHERS NEEDS WERE MET.
[00:50:02]
AND WHILE WE CAN SPEND AN ENTIRE EVENING TALKING ABOUT THAT DIGITAL LEARNING INSTEAD I'M GOING TO HIGHLIGHT JUST A FEW ITEMS THAT THE DISTRICT SUPPORTED FOR OUR TEACHERS.THOUGH SOME OF THE TRAINING FOCUSED ON SPECIFIC PLATFORMS LIKE GOOGLE TOOLS, KAMI OR SEESAW, THE UNDERLYING MESSAGE WAS THE SAME.
THE LEARNING COMES FIRST AND THE TOOLS COME SECOND.
THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT ACADEMIC SERVICES EMPHASIZED IN THEIR ONGOING WORK WITH STAFF AND PROVIDED THE DISTANCE LEARNING PLAYBOOK TO GUIDE TEACHERS IN THEIR LESSON, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY USE. IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH TEACHERS, THE DIGITAL TEACHING AND LEARNING TEAM AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ALSO SUPPORTED SUBSTITUTES, MOSTLY IN MANAGING DUAL CLASSROOMS SO THEY COULD GET IN THERE RIGHT AWAY AND SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS THAT NEED TO BE AT HOME. DEPARTMENTS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT MADE THEMSELVES AVAILABLE TO TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS THROUGH OFFICE HOURS, WHICH ALLOWED REAL TIME ACCESS TO ANSWERS AND SUPPORT. THIS IN THE MOMENT, PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROVIDED A PERSONAL TOUCH AND ALLOWED US TO BE RESPONSIVE TO THE NEEDS OF PLANO ISD.
AND I REALLY DO FEEL THAT'S ONE OF THE AREAS THAT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IS ONCE WE WENT THROUGH THE LEARNING IS SETTING UP TIME WHERE WE WOULD JUST KIND OF HANG OUT VIRTUALLY AND TEACHERS WOULD CALL IN WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR TECH SUPPORT THAT WAS NEEDED.
AND FINALLY, THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF CAPITAL ONE, THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM HAS BEEN ABLE TO OFFER TEACHERS AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBTAIN GOOGLE CERTIFICATION.
WE HAD OVER 500 TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS ATTEND INFORMATION SESSIONS WITH OVER 150 ALREADY PASSING THEIR EXAMS. WE EXPECT THIS NUMBER TO DOUBLE BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
AND JUST IN COMPARISON, DURING THE LAST TWO YEARS, WE'VE ONLY HAD SIXTY FIVE TEACHERS OBTAIN GOOGLE CERTIFICATION.
SO WE ARE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL TO CAPITAL ONE FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.
SO, OF COURSE, WE CANNOT FORGET ABOUT OUR CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS, NOT ONLY HAVE WE CONTINUED OUR PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP MEETINGS VIRTUALLY, BUT WE HAVE ALSO ADDED ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP MEETINGS LED BY STUDENT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES.
THIS YEAR, IN COLLABORATION WITH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION OUR SLI FOLKS WE REDESIGNED OUR CULTIVATING LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS TO ENSURE ITS ALIGNMENT TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE DISTRICT GOALS.
SO CURRENTLY WE ARE DEVELOPING OUR TEACHER LEADER ACADEMY AND WILL BE HOSTING OUR FIRST COHORT FOR THIS NEWLY DESIGNED PROGRAM THIS SUMMER.
WE'VE HAD 40 STAFF MEMBERS PARTICIPATING IN THE ASPIRING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ACADEMY AND OUR ASPIRING PRINCIPAL ACADEMY COHORT CURRENTLY INCLUDES FORTY SIX ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING CONTINUES TO OFFER TRAINING TO DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS ON THE STANDARDS FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT, THIS SYSTEM FOR PROJECT PLANNING IS FOLLOWED BY SOME OF THE WORLD'S MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES.
AND AS A PROJECT ORIENTED ORGANIZATION, WE FEEL THAT THE SYSTEM CAN HELP US BETTER INITIATE, PLAN AND EXECUTE OUR OWN PROJECTS IN PLANO.
AND ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS TIME TO ACKNOWLEDGE TOYOTA FOR THEIR SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING.
THIS YEAR, CAMPUS PRINCIPALS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND VIRTUAL CONFERENCES THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF THE TOYOTA LEADERSHIP GRANT, WHICH PROVIDES PRINCIPALS EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. AND WE'RE HOPING THAT MORE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT THROUGH THE SUMMER.
DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURALLY PROFICIENT RELATIONSHIP CONTINUES TO BE A FOCUS FOR THE DISTRICT AND FOR THE WORK OF THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DEPARTMENT.
OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STUDENT FAMILY COMMUNITY SERVICES AND BRIAN LYONS MAKES US EXCITED ABOUT WHAT'S AHEAD.
ONE OF OUR HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR WAS THE LAUNCH OF THE EQUITY CAPACITY COHORT.
LAST SUMMER, A TEAM OF 30 SECONDARY TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS BEGAN A YEAR LONG JOURNEY TO SUPPORT THE DISTRICT'S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND EQUITY.
THE COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE MEETS REGULARLY FOR JOB AND BETTER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING THAT RELIES ON PARTICIPANTS REFLECTION ON THEIR OWN PRACTICES AND MINDSETS.
SINCE THIS WORK FALLS UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF EQUITY AND THE MULTITIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT OR MTSS WE WILL CONTINUE TO ALIGN OUR EFFORTS IN THESE AREAS WITH COLLABORATION WITH THAT DEPARTMENT. WE HAVE WORKED EXTENSIVELY THIS YEAR ASSISTING WITH THE MTSS IMPLEMENTATION PLAN. OUR GOAL IS TO SUPPORT STUDENT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES AS WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THIS FRAMEWORK.
BY BUILDING CAPACITY WITHIN THE MTSS SITE TEAM, AND THAT IS A SMALL TEAM OF FOLKS AT THE CAMPUS WILL BE LEADING THE WORK, WE WILL ESTABLISH A STRONG FOUNDATION AT EACH CAMPUS.
STUDENT, FAMILY, COMMUNITY SERVICE, ACADEMIC SERVICES AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ARE SUPPORTING A SUSTAINABLE LONG TERM PLAN TO MAKE SURE THAT MTSS IS NOT SEEN AS ONE MORE THING. BUT THE WAY THAT WE BRING OUR MISSION AND THE PILLARS TO LIFE.
THIS TRULY IS A CLOSE, CONSISTENT, INTENTIONAL COLLABORATION AMONG THE DEPARTMENTS.
SO THIS YEAR, WE LEARNED THAT WE CAN DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY, AND WHILE WE HAVE MORE REFLECTION TO DO, WE WILL END THE YEAR WITH A LOT OF GREAT IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES THAT I HOPE WE CAN CARRY FORWARD INTO THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR, NO MATTER WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE FOR
[00:55:02]
US. AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN IN PLANO ONLY A LITTLE OVER A YEAR I MISSED SOME OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AND BUILD RELATIONSHIPS.SO I UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF FACE-TO-FACE INTERACTIONS.
HOWEVER, I ALSO UNDERSTAND HOW ONLINE LEARNING HAS BEEN INCREDIBLY BENEFICIAL TO OUR CAMPUSES, SO IN RETHINKING HOW WE SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS AND OTHER STAFF, WE HAVE DISCOVERED SOME THINGS THAT WORK AND I HOPE THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO CARRY THOSE FORWARD.
NEXT YEAR WE WILL CONTINUE TO EMPHASIZE AND ADDRESS DIGITAL LEARNING NEEDS.
WE PLAN TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO COACHING SO THAT ADMINISTRATORS AND DISTRICT STAFF CAN BETTER SUPPORT OUR TEACHERS.
WE'LL PARTNER WITH STUDENT FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES TO CONTINUE ADDRESSING EQUITY AND DIVERSITY AS A DISTRICT, AND WE'LL ALSO CREATE NEW RESOURCES AND MATERIALS TO ADDRESS EDUCATOR ETHICS.
ABOVE ALL ELSE OUR GOAL WILL BE TO ENSURE WE ARE SUPPORTING OUR STAFF AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS IN DELIVERING QUALITY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING THAT HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON ALL OUR STAKEHOLDERS, ESPECIALLY OUR STUDENTS.
AND THIS IS THE INCREDIBLE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM, CRAIG MCKINNEY, MARCUS MILLER, EDNA PHYTHIAN, AND MICHELLE RIBEIRO, AND WITHOUT THEM, THIS WORK WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.
I AM EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THEM.
AND I WILL ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE.
I HAVE SO, YOU KNOW, I ACTUALLY LIKE THAT YOU KNOW, I'M VERY HAPPY THAT WE'RE DOING THE LEADERSHIP PIPELINE, BUT HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHO GOES INTO THE LEADERSHIP ROLES? I MEAN, TO THE LEADERSHIP TRAININGS.
SURE. SO FOR THE TEACHER LEADER ACADEMY IS CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS.
WE'RE TRYING TO DESIGN THAT RIGHT, SO EVEN TODAY WE'RE CONSIDERING HOW IS THAT GOING TO LOOK LIKE MOVING FORWARD? SO WE HAVE A COUPLE OF IDEAS, WHETHER IT'S I DECIDE TO APPLY OR PRINCIPAL RECOMMENDATION AND WE'VE COME UP WITH HOW DO WE MARRY THOSE TWO? RIGHT. AS A TEACHER, I DECIDE I'M GOING TO APPLY.
AND THEN WE PRESENT PRINCIPALS AND CAMPUSES WITH WHO'S APPLY FROM THE CAMPUS SO THAT RECOMMENDATIONS CAN BE MADE.
FOR THE ASPIRING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ACADEMY.
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, I BELIEVE THEY HAD TO HAVE A RECOMMENDATION FROM THEIR PRINCIPAL. THEY HAD TO APPLY COMPLETE A DR.
BROCKMAN YOU MIGHT HAVE TO HELP ME WITH THIS ONE.
SO WITH THE ASPIRING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ACADEMY, IT WAS A RESUME, A LETTER OF INTEREST, WE DID OBTAIN A REFERENCE OR RECOMMENDATION FROM THEIR PRINCIPAL.
AND THEN, FRANKLY, AT THAT POINT, WE HAD TO PRIORITIZE AND DRAW NAMES BECAUSE WE HAD SO MANY PEOPLE INTERESTED, SO WE KIND OF TIERED THE APPLICANTS ACCORDING TO WHERE THEY WERE IN THEIR PATH, WERE THEY JUST STARTING A GRADUATE PROGRAM, HAD THEY ALREADY FINISHED THE GRADUATE PROGRAM AND THEN KNOWING THAT WE REALLY COULD NOT MANAGE MORE THAN 40, WE WE COULDN'T ACCEPT EVERYBODY THAT WANTED IN THE FIRST TIME AROUND WITH OUR ASPIRING PRINCIPAL ACADEMY, WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE EVERYONE THAT WANTED TO PARTICIPATE THIS FIRST YEAR. SO IT JUST SEEMS LIKE YOU'VE HAD TEACHERS THAT HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH THIS YEAR, KIND OF ON STEROIDS, WHAT LEARNINGS ARE GOING TO BE A NO BRAINER? THEY'RE GOING TO GO FORWARD.
AND, YOU KNOW, WE'RE THANKFUL TO HAVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO DISRUPT AND LEARN NEW THINGS. AND WHAT HAVE WE EXPERIENCED THAT'S LIKE WE REALLY HOPE WE DON'T HAVE TO CONTINUE THAT. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE IN THAT QUESTION? YES MA'AM. AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HOPE THAT WE MOVE FORWARD, OF COURSE, IS OUR WORK IN EQUITY AND DIVERSITY, BECAUSE THAT'S JUST BEEN ONE OF THE AREAS THAT IMMEDIATELY FILLED UP AS WE'RE PUTTING THINGS OUT THERE.
ANYTHING RELATED TO DIGITAL LEARNING IS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO MOVE FORWARD, REGARDLESS OF WHAT INSTRUCTION LOOKS LIKE NEXT YEAR.
WE KNOW THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO ADDRESS.
RIGHT. BECAUSE AS SOMEONE MENTIONED EARLIER THAT CONNECTION BETWEEN CAMPUSES IS VERY NICE, NOT ONLY WITH ADULTS, BUT ALSO WITH STUDENTS.
SO NOW THAT WE'VE LAID THAT FOUNDATION, I THINK WE NEED TO MOVE FORWARD AND CONTINUE THAT. SO I THINK THOSE TWO AREAS ARE THE NO BRAINERS.
AS FOR THINGS THAT WE NEED TO RECONSIDER.
I WOULD HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THAT ONE, BUT I THINK THAT IMMEDIATELY WHAT COMES TO MIND IS NOT TOPIC, BUT ACCESS RIGHT.
NOW, WE KNOW THAT WE CAN PROVIDE LEARNING IN DIFFERENT MANNERS RIGHT IF WE CAN RETURN TO A FACE TO FACE ENVIRONMENT I WOULD LOVE TO OFFER BLENDED OPTIONS.
SO THAT IT'S NOT TEACHERS WHO MUST SHOW UP RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL TO THIS LOCATION.
YES, THAT MIGHT BE ONE OPTION, BUT WE ALSO HAVE OTHER OPTIONS AND IT MIGHT BE ZOOM.
I THINK THAT'S GOING TO CUT BACK ON A LOT OF THE STRESSORS FROM TEACHERS THAT WE'RE
[01:00:03]
FEELING RIGHT NOW IT'S GOING TO CUT BACK ON WHEN IS THIS TRAINING REQUIRED BY AND THAT'S GOING TO JUST EASE EVERYONE'S PLATE I BELIEVE.SO I HAVE A HOT SPORTS OPINION AND THEN A QUESTION.
JUST LIKE BIG BANKS AND BIG ACCOUNTING FIRMS GET RATED ON AN ANNUAL BASIS FROM THEIR ASSOCIATES WHO GO THROUGH THEIR TRAINING PROGRAM BECAUSE THEIR TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE OUTSTANDING AND THEY GET RATED BY THEIR COMPETITORS.
BANK OF AMERICA IS THE ONE IN MY WORLD THAT COMES TO MIND.
THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND PRINCIPAL TRAINING PROGRAMS. SO GOOD WORK, BUT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO KEEP CHURNING THEM OUT.
ON MENTORSHIP YOU KNOW, I SAW THAT YOU'VE GOT MENTORS IN FIRST AND SECOND YEAR.
I CAN REMEMBER BEING A BRAND NEW TEACHER, FIRST DAY ON CAMPUS.
AND MY MENTOR TOLD ME THE RULE OF THUMB FOR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. AND SHE WAS MY MENTOR FOR THE ALL FOUR YEARS I WAS THERE.
DO WE HAVE AN OFFICIAL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM THAT GOES BEYOND SECOND YEAR? AND I'LL GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE.
IN MY PRACTICE NOW AT OUR LAW FIRM, WE HAVE A MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR ALL ASSOCIATES AND ASSOCIATE TRACK LAST EIGHT YEARS.
SO AS LONG AS YOU ARE WITHIN AN ASSOCIATE POOL, YOU HAVE A MENTOR ASSIGNED TO YOU.
WE CURRENTLY DO NOT. WE CAN ONLY HAVE A FIRST YEAR, AND A SECOND YEAR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM.
RIGHT. AND EVEN BETWEEN YEAR ONE, AND YEAR TWO, IT LOOKS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.
THIS IS AN AREA THAT WE'RE GROWING QUITE A BIT AND IT'S CHANGED FROM YEAR TO YEAR FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS. AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE CONTINUE TO GROW.
WE AGAIN, THIS DIGITAL WORLD HAS FORCED US TO THINK DIFFERENTLY ON WHAT THOSE SUPPORTS MIGHT LOOK LIKE. SO WHETHER IT'S COMING FROM THE CAMPUS OR THE DISTRICT, WE KNOW THAT WE'RE ADDING NEW SUPPORTS FOR OUR TEACHERS.
I THINK THAT'S GOING TO HELP US IN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
IT'S GOING TO EASE THE LOAD OF THE MENTOR BECAUSE THAT'S HEAVY WORK, RIGHT? AND ESPECIALLY THIS YEAR, IT'S A LOT OF WORK.
SO IF WE CAN SOMEHOW COMBINE DISTRICT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR NEW TEACHERS AND ALSO MENTORS RESPONSIBILITY TO ADDRESS [INAUDIBLE] I THINK WE CAN EXPAND THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE.
WE'LL HAVE TO GET VERY CREATIVE.
BUT RIGHT NOW, WE DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING BEYOND THOSE TWO YEARS.
I THINK IT'S DEFINITELY POSSIBLE WITH WHAT WE HAVE SEEN AND LEARNED THIS YEAR.
BUT I HOPE WE CAN EXPAND IT ONE.
TWO, I THINK GOING INTO NEXT YEAR, GIVEN THE YEAR THAT WE'VE JUST HAD, IF YOU COULD EXPAND IT AT LEAST BY A YEAR AND GET THOSE THIRD YEARS WHO'S SECOND YEAR WAS THIS YEAR, THEY MIGHT NEED SOME MORE SUPPORT.
SURE. BUT THEN MY NEXT QUESTION IS, WHAT DOES MENTORSHIP LOOK LIKE THIS YEAR IN THIS ENVIRONMENT? WE ARE EXPECTING OUR TEACHERS TO MEET REGULARLY WITH OUR MENTORS, WITH THEIR TEACHERS. WE HAVE A SET AMOUNT OF EXPECTATIONS THAT THEY HAVE TO MEET.
WE CONTINUOUSLY COLLECT FEEDBACK ON WHAT'S WORKING, WHAT'S NOT WORKING.
BUT WE KNOW THAT EVERYONE'S LOAD IS VERY HEAVY THIS YEAR.
IT'S A TOUGH YEAR FOR OUR TEACHERS.
IT'S A TOUGH YEAR FOR OUR MENTORS.
BUT WE CAN'T LET GO OF THOSE EXPECTATIONS.
RIGHT, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT THAT'S GOING TO IMPACT THOSE FIRST YEAR TEACHERS INTO THEIR SECOND YEAR TEACHERS. SO WE STILL HAVE OUR REGULAR GUIDELINES OF YOU MUST DO THIS.
WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY COLLECTING FEEDBACK FROM BOTH MENTORS AND NEW TEACHERS.
BUT AGAIN. IN ORDER TO FREE UP SOME OF THAT MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FROM THE CAMPUS, WE'RE TAKING ON SOME OF THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES OURSELVES.
AND I MENTIONED THE SPOTLIGHT SERIES.
THIS IS A DISTRICT LED MONTHLY SERIES WHERE WE ARE INTRODUCING NEW TEACHERS TO DEPARTMENTS.
SO, FOR EXAMPLE, THE LAST ONE I SAT SAT IN ON WAS THE [INAUDIBLE] MEETING.
AND I'M JUST THINKING, AS AN ELEMENTARY TEACHER, HAD THIS BEEN EXPLAINED TO ME THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN TESTING, WHAT THIS TESTING IS USED FOR BY THE DISTRICT, HOW THIS TESTING WILL IMPACT MY CAMPUS, IT WOULD HAVE MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
SO WE CONTINUE THAT TRADITIONAL MENTORSHIP AT THE CAMPUS.
BUT WE'RE ALSO MOVING SOME RESPONSIBILITIES AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL.
THANKS TO CRAIG MCKINNEY FROM THE TEAM.
I THINK HE'S BEEN EXTREMELY INNOVATIVE IN WHAT WE DO AND I THINK WE'LL START SEEING SOME NEW THINGS ADDED.
BUT YEAH, SO HOPEFULLY THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.
IT DID AND, YOU KNOW, REALLY THE LAST THING I'LL SAY IS I THINK A PERSONAL MENTOR RELATIONSHIP IS VERY IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY FOR SOMEBODY BRAND NEW INTO THE PROFESSION WHO'S REALLY LEARNING HOW TO BECOME A BETTER TEACHER.
AND SO WHILE I APPLAUD Y'ALL MOVING AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TO THE DISTRICT LEVEL, I DON'T WANT US TO DO THAT IN PLACE OF PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS BECAUSE WE NEED YOUNG TEACHERS TO
[01:05:02]
HAVE SOMEBODY THEY CAN GO TO.ONE OF THE AREAS THAT WE'RE REALLY TRYING TO PUSH A LITTLE BIT IS THE MENTOR VERSUS THE BUDDY TEACHER. WHAT DOES THE MENTOR DO AND WHAT DOES A BUDDY TEACHER DO? RIGHT. BECAUSE I THINK THAT'S GOING TO CREATE TWO RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CAMPUS, BUT ALSO KNOW WHO I GO TO FOR THIS AND WHO I HAVE MORE OF A BUDDY CONFIDENCE TYPE LEVEL.
RIGHT. STILL BEING ABLE TO HAVE TWO TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS.
AND ALL THAT TO SAY, YES, I DO HOPE THAT WE GROW OUR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM.
THERE'S A LOT OF AREAS TO LOOK INTO A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO IMPROVE, INCLUDING THE NUMBER OF MENTORS TO MENTEES RATIO.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO IMPROVE AND HOPEFULLY WE WILL SOON.
WE'RE MOVING FORWARD AND I THINK WE HAVE A VERY GOOD CURRENT PLAN.
THANK YOU SIR. I WAS GOING TO JUST MAKE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS, AND I WANT TO JUST SAY KUDOS TO THE INTENTIONAL COLLABORATION AMONG DEPARTMENTS.
I THINK YOU COULD HAVE HAD A PICTURE OF A SILO WITH THE CIRCLE AND A SLASH THROUGH IT, BECAUSE FOR MANY YEARS WE'VE BEEN IN SILOS.
AND THAT'S JUST KIND OF ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS INHERENT BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T MEAN TO DO THAT, BUT IT HAPPENS.
SO I LIKE THE INTENTIONAL COLLABORATION AMONG DEPARTMENTS.
AND THE OTHER THING I REALLY LIKE IS THE COMMUNITY PARTNER INVOLVEMENT.
YOU MENTIONED CAPITAL ONE AND TOYOTA.
IT WASN'T THAT MANY YEARS AGO THAT WE WERE KIND OF AFRAID TO DO THOSE PARTNERSHIPS.
AND I'M SO GLAD TO SEE THAT WE'RE DOING THAT AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE AMAZING LEADERSHIP THAT WE HAVE HERE IN THE COMMUNITY.
AND I HAPPEN TO KNOW SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT THAT ARE BOTH AT TOYOTA AND CAPITAL ONE AND THEY'RE JUST EAGER. I KNOW THEY'RE EAGER.
THANK YOU. AND WHEN IT COMES TO COLLABORATION, THE NICE THING IS WE HAD NO CHOICE LIKE RIGHT THIS YEAR WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO COLLABORATE.
[LAUGHTER] THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY WE WERE GOING TO MAKE IT THROUGH.
AND AS FAR AS TOYOTA AND CAPITAL ONE GOES, I'VE ALREADY BEEN TALKING TO JAMEE JOLLY ABOUT WE NEED THEM FOR NEXT YEAR.
WE NEED THIS. AND YES, WE WANT TO GO BACK TO THE TRADITIONAL PROGRAMS THAT WE'RE SPONSORING BEFORE. BUT WHY WOULDN'T WE PUSH FORWARD WITH SOMETHING LIKE GOOGLE CERTIFICATION REGARDLESS OF WHAT NEXT YEAR LOOKS LIKE? THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO PUSH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
I CAN'T NOT MENTION THE FACT THAT MY FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE IN PLANO ISD WAS DOING THE MENTORING PROGRAM WITH CRAIG MCKINNEY AS A FIRST YEAR TEACHER, SO I KNEW HIM WHEN.
AND ONE OF THE THINGS I'VE HEARD THAT TEACHERS ARE REALLY STRUGGLING WITH IS THOSE THAT ARE DOING THE CO-SEATING EXPERIENCE.
CAN YOU SPEAK TO WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT WE'RE ABLE TO BRING TO OUR TEACHERS FOR THAT AND WHAT YOUR IMPRESSIONS ARE ABOUT THAT AND NEW DEVELOPMENT? ABSOLUTELY.
AND I CAN SPEAK TO SOME OF THIS AND THEN OTHERS IN THE ROOM MIGHT HAVE ADDITIONAL COMMENTS TO MAKE. BUT AS FAR AS THE SUPPORTS, THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WE HAD TO ACT ON IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE OF THE NEED. THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WE HAD TO PUSH THROUGH.
BUT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING, ACADEMIC SERVICES, DIGITAL TEACHING AND LEARNING IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO ACTION. AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE THOUGHT OF IMMEDIATELY IS WE'VE GOT TO PROVIDE ASYNCHRONOUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR THESE TEACHERS.
YES, WE'RE GOING TO BE THERE IN LIVE SESSIONS, BUT THAT'S NOT GOING TO BE ENOUGH.
SO INITIALLY, IT'S LET'S DESIGNATE A TEAM AT THE CAMPUS WHO'S GOING TO BE THE SUPPORT.
RIGHT. SO THAT WAS OUR NUMBER ONE.
NUMBER TWO WAS WHAT CAN WE FRONT LOAD RIGHT NOW? NUMBER THREE IS WE'RE GOING TO OFFER SOME LIVE SESSIONS ALONG WITH ASYNCHRONOUS SESSIONS.
RIGHT, SO THAT I HAVE SOME OPTIONS TO ATTEND, BUT I'M ALSO THERE IF NEEDED.
AND THEN FINALLY, I THINK ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT WE, OF COURSE, WE HAD TO ADJUST THIS CONTINUOUSLY LIKE I REMEMBER WALKING ACROSS THE STREET BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT THIS HAS COME UP QUITE A BIT. LET'S RECORD A VIDEO ON HOW TO DO THIS.
AND WE DID THAT MORE THAN ONCE.
FINALLY, I'M GOING TO SAY OFFICE HOURS WAS SOMETHING HUGE.
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THAT ENOUGH.
AND WHETHER IT WAS INSTRUCTION OR SOMETHING ELSE, JUST CREATING TIME FOR TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO CALL IN OR PRINCIPALS TO CALL IN AND SAY, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS? HOW DO WE ADDRESS THIS? WHAT BUTTON AM I MISSING EVEN.
RIGHT. AND SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS WERE FIVE MINUTES AND WE'RE DONE.
OTHERS WERE LET ME LOOK AT YOUR SET UP.
LET ME VISIT YOU IF I HAVE TO.
AND THEY WERE A LITTLE BIT MORE COMPLEX.
BUT I REALLY DO THINK THAT THE OFFICE HOUR SUPPORT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
DID IT SOLVE EVERYTHING? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
BUT IT WAS, I THINK, SOMETHING THAT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN A LOT OF CAMPUSES.
AND IS THAT SOMETHING DEVELOPED THIS YEAR, THE OFFICE HOURS, OR IS THAT IT EXISTED BEFORE NOW? NO, IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS, AGAIN, WHERE WE HAD NO CHOICE.
RIGHT. WE WERE LIMITED AS TO WHERE WE COULD BE AT CAMPUSES.
AND ALSO BECAUSE WE WERE IMPLEMENTING THIS EVERYWHERE AT ONCE, WE CAN'T SEND TEAMS OF PEOPLE TO ALL THE CAMPUSES AT ONCE.
SO INSTEAD, LET'S JUST DESIGNATE CHUNKS OF TIME IN OUR MORNING AND AFTERNOON.
[01:10:04]
AND THIS WAS WHO CAN SIGN UP FOR A.M.AND LITERALLY I'M WORKING THERE WHILE I'M WAITING FOR A TEACHER TO COME ON AND ASK FOR HELP. AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT THOSE OFFICE HOURS WERE.
AND DO YOU EXPECT THAT TO BE SOMETHING WE CONTINUE? OH I HOPE SO.
THINK THAT THERE WILL BE SOME AREAS WHERE THIS IS BENEFICIAL.
AND WHY WOULDN'T WE IF WE CAN AND IF WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY, WHY WOULDN'T WE OFFER SOMETHING LIKE THIS? THAT'S AWESOME.
I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. JUST CURIOUS IN TERMS OF FOR NEXT YEAR, IN TERMS OF THE INCREASED FOCUS ON DIVERSITY AND EQUITY FOR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING, WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE? AND IS THERE A PARTICULAR AREA THAT YOU'RE FOCUSED ON AND WHERE DO YOU EXPECT TO DRAW SOME OF YOUR RESOURCES FOR DEVELOPING THAT? SO THAT'S VERY EARLY ON IN THE PLANNING STAGES, BECAUSE A LOT OF THIS WORK WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR STUDENT FAMILY COMMUNITY SERVICES AND BRIAN LYONS, TO COME ON BOARD.
SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON IS DEVELOPING A YEAR THREE DIVERSITY, IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING THAT THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN AWARE OF, THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING. SO EVEN TODAY THIS MORNING, WE WERE LOOKING AT WHAT DO WE WANT THOSE LEARNING TARGETS TO BE SO THAT WE CAN THEN GO OUT AND SEEK RESOURCES, ADDITIONAL LEARNINGS LIKE BRIAN LYONS, MYSELF EDNA PHYTHIAN FROM THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TEAM.
WE'VE GOT A TRAINING THIS THURSDAY, ACTUALLY THROUGH REGION 10 WHERE WE WILL BE DOING SOME LEARNING TO SEE WHAT WE CAN BRING BACK.
SO THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE RESOURCES WE WILL BE USING.
VERY EARLY IN THE STAGES OF PLANNING USING.
AS FAR AS DIVERSITY, LARGER SCALE.
ONE OF THE THINGS I'VE REALLY ENJOYED IS LISTENING TO DR.
GOBER TALK ABOUT WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
RIGHT, BECAUSE IT'S AN EMPHASIS ON EQUITY AND THEN DIVERSITY.
THAT'S MY INTERPRETATION OF IT.
I MIGHT BE WRONG AND HE MIGHT BEAT ME UP LATER, BUT IT'S A SLOW IMPLEMENTATION.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE ALWAYS SAID ABOUT DIVERSITY IS NOT EVERYONE IS AT THE SAME PLACE, SO NOT EVERYONE IS READY TO HEAR THE SAME MESSAGE.
SO WE HAVE TO DO SOME TRAINING.
WE'VE GOT TO DO SOME DISCUSSION, BUT WE ALSO HAVE TO LEAD WITH QUESTIONS SO THAT THIS TABLE, THE DISCUSSION MIGHT LOOK SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN THAT TABLE, BUT THE OBJECTIVE IS STILL THE SAME. BUT WE'RE MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY'RE AT.
THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG TERM THING BECAUSE IT'S SOMETHING THAT, AGAIN, STUDENT FAMILY COMMUNITY SERVICES WILL BE LEADING.
WE'RE HERE TO SUPPORT, BUT IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE STARTING.
SO AS WE CONTINUE YEAR THREE OF OUR IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING, WE KNOW THAT THERE'S GREATER WORK AS FAR AS THE MTSS UMBRELLA EQUITY AND DIVERSITY THAT WE KNOW WE'LL BE TARGETING SOME OF THESE THINGS. THE DATA WILL TELL STORIES THAT I THINK WILL LEAD TO WHAT THAT TRAINING MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
HOW DO WE ADDRESS EQUITY AND IN WHAT AREAS DO WE NEED TO ADDRESS IT? THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.
I THINK THERE'S SO MANY TOOLS THAT PEOPLE HAVE LEARNED THIS YEAR, I HAVE GOTTEN SO MANY POSITIVE COMMENTS FROM PARENTS ABOUT HOW MUCH MORE THEY KNOW ABOUT THE WORKLOAD THAT THEIR CHILD IS GETTING READY TO UNDERTAKE BECAUSE OF THE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS.
I KNOW THAT WE'LL HAVE A NEED TO KEEP A LOT OF THESE GOOD ITEMS FOR THE FUTURE.
WE WILL NOW HEAR FROM RANDY MCDOWELL, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, REGARDING A FACILITIES
[10.C. Plano ISD Facilities Update after Winter Storms]
UPDATE AFTER THE WINTER STORMS. MR. MCDOWELL. YES, THANK YOU, PRESIDENT RICHARDS.SO WE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON THE STORMS. AND I KNOW WE GIVE A LOT OF CREDIT TO THE GUYS EARLIER AND THE GIRLS, AND THAT WAS VERY WELL DESERVED. AND BUT WE'D LIKE TO GIVE YOU A FEW MORE DETAILS ON STORM URIE AND HOW IT IMPACTED PLANO ISD.
AND SO, AS YOU KNOW, THE SNOW, ICE AND ALL OF THAT, THE COLD TEMPERATURES HIT US FEBRUARY 14TH THROUGH 19TH.
I THOUGHT I WAS BACK IN AMARILLO IN ONE OF THOSE REALLY BAD PANHANDLE STORMS THAT FROM LIVING THERE FOR 45 YEARS.
BUT ONE OF THEM SNUCK DOWN HERE AND GOT US IN THE DFW AREA.
AND I HOPE THAT WAS THE LAST ONE.
AS WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER, WE DID HAVE WATER DAMAGE TO 51 FACILITIES.
FORTY SIX CAMPUSES, FIVE AUXILLARY FORTY SIX OF THOSE MAIN CAMPSITES, FIVE AUXILIARY BUILDINGS. AND OUR TWO STADIUMS ALSO HAVE SOME PRETTY SIGNIFICANT WATER AND PIPE DAMAGE.
THE FACILITIES DEPARTMENT BEGAN ROLLING OUT TECHNICIANS ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17TH.
AND WE'LL GIVE YOU MORE OF A TIMELINE HERE IN JUST A MINUTE.
BUT JUST OUR OWN STAFF PUT IN TWENTY ONE HUNDRED MAN HOURS TO TRY TO GET US READY TO START SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 22ND.
AND SO WE'LL ALSO TALK ABOUT ALL THE OTHER ASSISTANCE THAT WE HAD TO BRING IN.
SO WE HAD BURST PIPES AND THAT WAS IN THREE DIFFERENT AREAS.
[01:15:03]
SO THE FIRST OF THOSE AND I'LL GIVE YOU NUMBERS ON THESE HERE IN A MINUTE.BUT DOMESTIC LINES AND THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IS JUST THE WATER LINES IN YOUR HOUSE.
IT'S THE ONES THAT ARE RUNNING HOT WATER HEATERS, YOU KNOW, THE FAUCETS, THE TOILETS, THE WATER FOUNTAINS, ALL OF THAT.
SO THAT'S JUST YOUR REGULAR WATER LINES.
SECONDLY WAS THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS. AND SO ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS DO HAVE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS. WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THOSE.
THERE IS MANY THOUSAND GALLONS IN A FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.
AND THAT WATER IN MOST CASES HAS BEEN SITTING THERE PROBABLY SINCE THE BUILDING WAS BUILT. AND SO IT'S NOT THE GOOD CLEAN WATER THAT YOU'RE GETTING OUT OF YOUR DOMESTIC LINES AND THEN ALSO THE HVAC COILS AND PIPES.
AND SO WE HAVE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEATING AND AIR SYSTEMS, AS MOST DISTRICTS DO.
BUT SOME OF THOSE JUST HEAT OR COOL A COIL AND THEN, YOU KNOW, THE AIR FLOWS OVER THAT.
OTHERS ARE A PIPE SYSTEM TO WHERE WATER TRAVELS THROUGH A BUILDING AND THAT WATER IS EITHER HOT WATER OR CHILLED WATER.
AND THEN IT GOES THROUGH COILS AND YOU BLOW AIR ACROSS IT.
AND THAT'S WHAT HEAT OR COOLS THE ROOM.
AND SO WE HAD MANY LEAKS WHERE THOSE COILS BUSTED IN THOSE WATER SYSTEMS. AND SO, AGAIN, I'LL GIVE YOU NUMBERS ON THAT HERE IN JUST A LITTLE BIT.
SO THOSE WERE REALLY THE THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER SYSTEMS THAT WE HAVE IN THE DISTRICT. WE DID EXPERIENCE SIGNIFICANT LEAKS IN ALL THREE OF THOSE.
WE DID TAKE MEASURES ON THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS, THOUGH, THAT EARLY ON WHEN WE REALIZED POWER WAS GOING OUT, WE SENT OUT TEAMS AND WE DRAINED ALL THOSE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS. AND SO NORMALLY YOU CAN'T DO THAT.
BUT WE WORKED WITH THE FIRE MARSHAL.
THEY KNEW WHAT WE WERE UP AGAINST.
WE CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND SAID, OK, WE GOT TWO CHOICES HERE.
ONE IS WE'RE EITHER GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF WATER DAMAGE OR TWO IS WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PUT OUR CAMPUSES AT RISK OF FIRE.
AND SO THEY AGREED TO GO AHEAD AND LET US WITH THE FIRE MARSHAL, GO AHEAD AND DRAIN THOSE SYSTEMS OUT. WE DID HAVE SOME KITCHEN EQUIPMENT DAMAGE AS WELL.
I'LL GIVE YOU SOME NUMBERS ON THAT HERE AND A LITTLE BIT.
BUT THE WATER DAMAGE, YOU KNOW, IT IMPACTED FLOORING, OF COURSE, SOME ELECTRICAL, OF COURSE, DRYWALL AND INSULATION ANYWHERE THAT IT GOT INTO A WALL.
WE ALSO HAD SOME TECHNOLOGY DAMAGE AND SOME OTHER FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT DAMAGE.
JUST A QUICK TIMELINE HERE, AND SO ON THE SUNDAY, THE 14TH IS WHEN WE STARTED GETTING ALL THE NOTIFICATIONS THAT WE HAD SYSTEMS THAT WERE LOSING POWER.
SO WE STARTED GETTING ALERTS THERE.
ON MONDAY THE 15TH IS WHEN WE STARTED GETTING THE TECHNICIANS OUT AND ADDRESSING ALL THE ISSUES DISTRICT WIDE.
AND THAT REALLY CONTINUED THROUGH HERE.
ON TUESDAY THE 16TH IS WHEN WE MADE THE DECISION THAT THE POWER WAS REALLY IFFY WE WERE HAVING POWER GO DOWN FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME.
AND SO THAT IS WHEN WE DRAINED THOSE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS, I CAN TELL YOU THAT SAVED US A WHOLE LOT MORE FLOODING AN MANY DISTRICTS AROUND US DID THE SAME THING.
FEBRUARY 17TH WE DID BRING IN THE RESTORATION COMPANIES AND WE'LL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT HERE IN A MINUTE. BUT WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO GET A COUPLE OF BIG RESTORATION COMPANIES TO COME IN.
AND THEN FEBRUARY 17TH, THROUGH THAT SUNDAY ON THE 21ST, AGAIN, OUR TECHNICIANS AND ALL THE CONTRACTORS TOGETHER PARTNERED TO IDENTIFY, REPAIR AND CLEAN THE IMPACTED CAMPUSES SO THAT OUR STUDENTS COULD RETURN TO SCHOOL.
A QUICK SUMMARY OF THE STORM DAMAGE.
AND SO WE HAD ABOUT TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF OUR CAMPUSES WHEN YOU AGGREGATE IT ALL TOGETHER, THAT HAD FLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE.
SO, OF COURSE, THAT WAS IN VARYING DEGREES.
SOME OF THAT WAS JUST WATER, YOU KNOW, ON A VCT FLOOR THAT WE WERE ABLE TO SUCK UP.
OTHER WAS ON GYM FLOORS OR AT LEAST ONE GYM FLOOR IS GONE.
IT'S THE WORST I'VE EVER SEEN THAT'S HEAVED UP ABOUT THIS HIGH.
AND SO ANYWAY, WE HAD VARYING AND THEN, OF COURSE, A LOT OF CARPET THAT WAS WET, BUT ABOUT TWO HUNDRED TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND SQUARE FEET.
SO THAT'S EQUIVALENT TO ABOUT FOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, THE WHOLE CAMPUS.
AND SO THAT'S A LOT OF SQUARE FOOTAGE.
WE HAD 21 BUILDINGS THAT HAD FLOODING BY THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM BREAKS THAT WE TALK ABOUT. AND SO SOME OF THAT HAPPENED PRIOR TO DRAINING THOSE OTHERS WHEN WE STARTED BRINGING THE SYSTEMS BACK ON, THE WATER WAS STILL DOWN IN SOME OF THE HEADS.
AND SO THOSE HEADS FROZE AND BUSTED.
AND SO THEN WHEN WE STARTED TURNING IT ON, WE DID GET SOME WATER DAMAGE JUST FROM THOSE YOU CAN'T GET IT TURNED BACK OFF FAST ENOUGH.
THOSE PUT A LOT OF WATER OUT IN A HURRY.
AGAIN, VARYING DEGREES OF THAT.
WE HAD 23 BUILDINGS THAT HAD SOME FLOODING FROM THE HVAC LINES THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT ON THOSE ON THE WATER SYSTEM, HVAC SYSTEMS.
[01:20:01]
AND THEN WE HAVE 23 BUILDINGS THAT ARE IMPACTED TO SOME DEGREE WITH THE DOMESTIC WATER LEAKS. AND LAST COUNT, WE HAD ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE DIFFERENT DOMESTIC WATER LEAKS.THOSE ARE TYPICALLY IN A WALL SOMEWHERE IN A RESTROOM OR GOING TO A WATER FOUNTAIN.
AND OF COURSE, SOME OF THOSE GO UNDETECTED FOR A WHILE UNTIL YOU START SEEING IT COME OUT SOMEWHERE. SO SO JUST TO KIND OF GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE NUMBER OF LEAKS.
SO, RANDY, OBVIOUSLY THE MATH MEANS THAT SOME CAMPUSES HAD MORE THAN ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS. THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT.
SO HOW MANY DO WE HAVE ANY CAMPUSES THAT SUFFERED FROM ALL THREE? I CAN'T GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE.
OK, I TALKED ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE THAT WE HAD TO COME IN, AND NORMALLY WE DON'T GIVE THEM, YOU KNOW, MUCH RECOGNITION.
BUT I CAN TELL YOU, ALL OF THESE PEOPLE ON THIS LIST WERE IN VERY HIGH DEMAND, WHETHER IT WAS RESIDENTIAL, WHETHER IT WAS OTHER COMMERCIAL.
AND THIS IS WHERE WHEN YOU FIND OUT WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE AND WHO REALLY WANTS TO TAKE CARE OF YOU. AND THE FIRST TWO, THERE ON RESTORATION AND CLEANUP COTTON GLOBAL DISASTER SOLUTIONS AND SERVPRO FIRE AND WATER CLEANUP.
THOSE ARE BOTH VERY LARGE RESTORATION COMPANIES.
WE HAD TO REALLY PULL SOME STRINGS AND SWEET TALK TO GET THEM TO COME IN.
THEY STARTED ON A SMALL SCALE.
COTTON WAS GOING TO DO SIX CAMPUSES FOR US AND I THINK THEY ENDED UP WITH 14 CAMPUSES.
AND SO THEY JUST KEPT PULLING MORE AND MORE RESOURCES.
I KNOW THEY BROUGHT IN A CREW FROM SOUTH CAROLINA AND ONE FROM FLORIDA I BELIEVE.
THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO GET HERE QUITE AS QUICK, BUT I DON'T HAVE A NUMBER ON THEM.
I THINK THEY DID 10, 12 CAMPUSES, 8 TO 10 CAMPUSES.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, ABM OUR CUSTODIAL GROUP, THEY WERE REALLY ON THE FOREFRONT OF ALL OF THAT. AND SO WHEN WE'D GET A LEAK AND IT WAS FLOODING RICKY DOBBS, WHO WAS ON HERE, HE'D SEND A TEAM OVER, THEY'D HAVE THEIR EXTRACTORS.
AND THEY'RE REALLY THE ONES THAT GOT THE BULK OF THE WATER UP SO THE RESTORATION COULD COME IN BECAUSE RESTORATION WAS PULLING OFF [INAUDIBLE] BASE DRILLING HOLES, PUTTING FANS, PUTTING DEHUMIDIFIERS IN REALLY TRYING TO GET THE MOISTURE OUT SO IT WOULDN'T GIVE US ADDITIONAL DAMAGE, AS YOU ALL KNOW WHAT MOISTURE CAN DO AN THE PROBLEMS THAT IT CREATES. AND SO THAT TEAM OF THOSE THREE OH, MY GOSH, IF WE WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN THE RESTORATION COMPANIES, I DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND OF SHAPE WE WOULD BE IN.
AS WE GO FORWARD AWARDING CONTRACTS, I THINK Y'ALL OUGHT TO GIVE SOME CONSIDERATION TO THE NAMES ON THIS LIST SHOWING UP WHEN WE NEEDED THEM AND THAT IN TERMS OF RECOMMENDING WHICH CONTRACTS TO TAKE, I WOULD ENCOURAGE THIS TO BE PART OF THAT CRITERIA.
AND WE THINK THE SAME BECAUSE THESE ARE THE ONES THAT BAILED US OUT WHEN OTHERS DIDN'T.
WE ALSO HAD A COUPLE OF COMPANIES THAT HELPED US ON THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS, EXCEL AND AMERICAN.
WE'LL HAVE AT LEAST THE ONE GYM FLOOR THAT WE HAVE TO REPLACE.
I MEAN, THEY WERE IN EXTREMELY HIGH DEMAND.
AND WE HAD TWO OF THE LARGE COMPANIES UNITED AND CENTRIC, THAT BOTH CAME IN AND HELPED.
IF WE COULDN'T HAVE GOT TWO OF THOSE, WE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HAVE SCHOOL AT MANY OF THE CAMPUSES. WE ALSO HAD A LOT OF FANS EQUIPMENT THAT WAS DAMAGED.
WE HAD MULTIPLE COMPANIES WORKING THERE.
AND THEN WE ALSO HAD ONE ROOFING COMPANY THAT WE BROUGHT IN.
SO YOU CAN SEE AS HARD AS OUR STAFF WORKED, IT ALSO TOOK A LOT OF STAFF ON THE OTHER SIDE. AND I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE THE RESTORATION COMPANIES BROUGHT IN.
I MEAN, THERE WERE TIMES I'D BE ON A CAMPUS AND THERE WOULD BE 30, 40 OF THEM THERE WORKING. AND THEY WERE JUST MOVING THEM ALL, YOU KNOW, ALL OVER TO THE IMPACTED CAMPUSES.
SO. HEY, RANDY, QUICK QUESTION, GOING BACK TO SOME OF THE WATER CLEAN UP, LIKE WE ALL KNOW THAT MOLD CAN BE A VERY SCARY THING.
AND OBVIOUSLY ACTING AS QUICK AS WE DID, WE'VE PROBABLY AVOIDED SOME PRETTY BAD SITUATIONS. BUT ARE WE STILL GOING TO BE DOING ANY KIND OF MONITORING FOR AIR QUALITY BECAUSE OF THAT WATER DAMAGE AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME TYPE OF MOLD GROWTH? YES, WE ABSOLUTELY ARE.
AND SO ONE THING THAT WE WERE DOING IS WE WERE TESTING WALLS AS WE WERE GOING TO SEE WHAT THE MOISTURE CONTENT WAS AND SO WE WOULDN'T PULL FANS AND DEHUMIDIFIERS OUT UNTIL IT GOT TO AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL.
SO YOU'RE RIGHT. I MEAN, THAT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME LONG TERM IMPACTS OF THIS.
YOU KNOW, OF COURSE, WE'RE NOT SURE WHERE, BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THAT.
WE HAVE ONE I THINK TWO COMPANIES LINED UP TO DO AIR QUALITY CHECKS.
AND SO REALLY, IT TAKES A WHILE BEFORE FOR THINGS TO START HAPPENING THAT YOU NEED TO TEST. IT DOESN'T REALLY DO ANY GOOD TO TEST WHEN IT'S HAPPENING.
RIGHT. BUT, YOU KNOW, IT HELPS TO TEST A WEEK LATER AND TWO WEEKS LATER AND SO ON.
[01:25:03]
AND YES, THAT IS VERY MUCH PART OF OUR FOLLOW UP PLAN, IS THAT WE WILL BE DOING AIR QUALITY CHECKS. WE ARE OBVIOUSLY CONCERNED ABOUT THAT, GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF FLOODING THAT WE HAD AND IN, YOU KNOW, OUR EMPLOYEES AND OUR STUDENTS, SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT.THAT'S SOMETHING WE'LL DEFINITELY KEEP AN EYE ON.
AND JUST ONE OTHER QUESTION IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY THERE WERE SOME DRYWALL DAMAGE AND OTHER STUFF LIKE THAT, AND THAT HAPPENED ALL OVER THE STATE.
IS THERE ARE WE FINDING ANY KIND OF SHORTAGE OR ISSUES WITH THE SUPPLY LINE TO GET THE THINGS THAT WE NEED TO MAKE THOSE REPAIRS? YOU KNOW, I HAVEN'T HEARD THAT YET.
MOST OF THAT WE HAVEN'T GOTTEN INTO AT THIS POINT, WE HAD TO REPLACE A WHOLE LOT OF CEILING TILE. WE WERE BUYING, YOU KNOW, THAT BY THE TRUCKLOAD.
WE HAD A LOT IN STOCK AND WE BOUGHT A LOT MORE.
BUT, YOU KNOW, THAT INDUSTRY WAS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE HURRICANE.
THAT'S WHY THAT AND ALL JUST THE BUILDING BOOM THAT'S GOING ON.
I MEAN, WOOD PRICES ARE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH AND, YOU KNOW, SHEETROCK AND ALL THAT IS, WAS THERE WAS A SHORTAGE ON THAT ANYWAY.
SO, YES, I EXPECT THAT TO BE MORE IMPACTED.
BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD THAT FROM THE TEAM YET THAT WE'VE RUN INTO THAT.
RANDY ALSO KUDOS TO YOUR TEAM, THE REASON THESE PEOPLE RESPONDED PROBABLY AS QUICKLY AS THEY DID IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE SUCH A PROFESSIONALLY RUN FINANCE ORGANIZATION, YOUR ACCOUNTS PAYABLE RUNS VERY SMOOTHLY.
AND SO I THINK THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IF SOMEONE THINKS I'M NOT GONNA GET MY MONEY FOR SIX MONTHS FROM THIS ENTITY.
SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEAM DOING THEIR DAILY JOBS WELL, AND THEN PEOPLE WILL RESPOND.
IT'S THE WHOLE DISTRICT THAT MAKES IT WORTHWHILE, AND MAKES US HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR VENDORS. ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? I'VE GOT A COUPLE MORE SLIDES HERE I'M SORRY.
I'M SORRY. ON JUST THE AFTERMATH, WE ARE CONTINUING TO I MEAN, WE'RE STILL DEALING WITH MORE ISSUES.
SO THROUGHOUT THE LAST WEEK, MOST OF OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO SAFELY RETURN TO THEIR CAMPUSES AND TO THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDINGS.
WE DID HAVE TWO AUXILIARY BUILDINGS, SHILOH IT WAS A LITTLE BIT LONGER BEFORE WE COULD GET THAT ONE OPENED UP.
AND THEN THE STAFF THAT WE HAVE OVER AT PEBBLE CREEK, THE PASAR, AN INTERNAL AUDIT, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO RETURN, I THINK, UNTIL FRIDAY OR NEXT WEEK.
AND SO WE HAD SOME PRETTY SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE THERE.
TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA ON COST AND THEN I'LL TALK ABOUT INSURANCE, SO DON'T PANIC TOO QUICK HERE, BUT THE RESTORATION CONTRACTORS, THAT'S GOING TO BE ABOUT 650,000.
THE LAST TALLY THAT I SAW, FIRE SUPPRESSION REPAIRS ABOUT 35, HVAC REPAIRS, ABOUT 580,000.
LIKE AT JASPER WE HAD A 10 INCH WATER LINE THAT FROZE.
AND WE DIDN'T REALIZE THAT UNTIL I WAS IN THERESA'S OFFICE THE OTHER DAY.
AND I HAD TO PULL IN AND THEY HAD TO REROUTE THESE MAIN TEN INCH LINES OVER THE WEEKEND.
AND I GOT A TEXT THAT'S RIGHT AFTER LUNCH THAT THEY HAD THAT ONE UP AND GOING.
AND SO THAT WAS CONTROLLING PRETTY MUCH THE WHOLE CAMPUS.
SO WE GOT INTO SOME OF THOSE THAT WERE JUST REALLY LARGE CARPENTRY SUPPLIES, PARTS, CEILING TILE, ALL THAT.
PLUMBING PARTS, ABOUT ANOTHER 40 FLOORING REPLACEMENT THAT'S AGAIN THE GYM AT RICE IT'S GOING TO BE ABOUT 150,000 TO REPLACE THAT ONE.
WE TRIED TO SAVE IT AND WE DIDN'T GET CLOSE TO SAVING THAT ONE.
KITCHEN EQUIPMENT REPAIRS ARE ABOUT 102 JUST OVERTIME AND FACILITIES LABOR ABOVE AND BEYOND THEIR NORMAL IS ABOUT FIFTY EIGHT THOUSAND.
WE DID SOME SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL AT TWENTY SIX, ROOFING REPAIRS AT THREE.
AND CAODY, WE'RE JUST TAKING A GUESS ON AIR QUALITY TESTING, BUT SOMEWHERE AROUND ABOUT THIRTY THREE THOUSAND JUST FOR WHAT WE HAVE PLANNED.
SO THE TOTAL OF THAT'S A LITTLE OVER ONE POINT SEVEN MILLION.
AND SO IT ADDS UP PRETTY QUICK.
THERE WILL PROBABLY BE SOME MORE THINGS THAT COME UP.
BUT THAT'S OUR BEST ESTIMATE TODAY.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO BE OUT OF POCKET ALL THAT ONE POINT SEVEN MILLION.
SO WE DO HAVE AN INSURANCE POLICY.
AND FORTUNATELY, THIS DID NOT FALL UNDER WIND AND HAIL BECAUSE REMEMBER THE HIGH PERCENTAGE DEDUCTIBLES THAT POLICIES HAVE GONE TO, BUT THIS ONE FALLS UNDER ALL OTHER PERILS. AND SO THE ADJUSTERS HAVE BEEN OUT AND THEY'VE BEEN ON SOME OF THE SITES, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE WE'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR DEDUCTIBLE.
AND SO, AGAIN, WITH THAT NUMBER, THEY WOULD PAY ABOUT ONE POINT SIX, WE WOULD PAY ABOUT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND. SO WE COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE OFF THAN THAT.
IT DOES LOOK LIKE WE MAY BE ABLE TO RECOVER SOME OF THAT.
AND SO TEA SENT OUT AN EMAIL, I BELIEVE, TODAY OR YESTERDAY, I THINK IT CAME OUT TODAY THAT THEY'RE CONDUCTING A SURVEY OF ESTIMATED REMEDIATION COSTS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
IT LOOKS LIKE THEY WANT TO GIVE A REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE.
[01:30:01]
SO THE PRIORITY OF HOW THAT WORKS IS, OF COURSE, PROPERTY INSURANCE PAYS FIRST SECOND SINCE IT HAS BEEN DECLARED A DISASTER, THERE WILL BE FEMA REIMBURSEMENT THAT IS LIMITED TO 75 PERCENT OF THE LOSSES THAT ARE NOT REIMBURSED BY INSURANCE.AND SO WITH THAT THEORY, I MEAN, WE MIGHT COULD GET 75,000 OF THE HUNDRED THOUSAND IF THAT ALL WORKS OUT ACCORDING TO PLAN.
AND THEN THIRDLY, THERE IS BECAUSE THE STATE DECLARED IT A DISASTER, THERE IS IN STATUTE THAT WE CAN APPLY TO TEA FOR DISASTER AID ASSISTANCE UP TO TWO YEARS AFTER THAT, BUT THAT WOULD BE THE THIRD PRIORITY.
SO NOW WE MAY JUST BE NOW LOOKING AT THE OTHER TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND, BUT IT PROBABLY WON'T BE THAT SIMPLE. BUT THAT'S WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TODAY AS FAR AS THE PRIORITIZATION.
AND I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A LOT OF HOOPS TO JUMP THROUGH TO MAKE ALL THAT HAPPEN.
BUT I MEAN, GOOD NEWS IS IT DOESN'T APPEAR THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE OUT A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MONEY OUT OF OUR BUDGET.
I HAVE A QUESTION, RANDY, IF WE FIND DAMAGE THAT COMES FORWARD, YOU KNOW, WE MAY NOT SEE IT LIKE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT NINE OR 10 INCH PIPE THAT WAS AT THE OTHER SCHOOL.
SO WHAT DO WE DO IF WE FIND FUTURE UNRECOGNIZED DAMAGE RIGHT NOW? AND HOW DO WE GO ABOUT GETTING THAT REPAIRED? AND I THE OTHER ONE IS, YOU KNOW, AT MITCHELL, WE HAVE THAT THERMAL.
AND I THINK WE HAVE THAT AT ROBINSON.
IS THAT. YES. WHERE DID WE PUT THE OTHER ONE, OK? WERE THOSE IMPACTED? SO FUTURE PROBLEMS THAT WE DON'T KNOW RIGHT NOW.
AND THEN WHAT ABOUT THE THERMAL UNITS.
SO OK, SO ON FUTURE IMPACTED, IT WILL STILL BE UNDER THE SAME INSURANCE CLAIM.
AND I THINK WE HAVE QUITE SOME TIME, I DON'T KNOW, UNDER THE POLICY, BUT TYPICALLY THAT'S A YEAR OR MORE. SO I DON'T EXPECT THAT THAT'S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM AS WE RUN INTO OTHER ISSUES, AS LONG AS WE CAN ASSOCIATE THEM TO THIS DAMAGE, AS YOU KNOW, THAT CAN GET A LITTLE TRICKY SOMETIMES.
BUT I THINK WE'VE GOT GOOD INSURANCE AND I REALLY DON'T EXPECT ANY ISSUES THERE.
ON THE GEOTHERMAL. HONESTLY, WE HAD A LOT OF CAMPUSES WE WERE CHASING AROUND.
I DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING SPECIFIC ON THOSE.
I DO BELIEVE THAT WE DRAINED THOSE SYSTEMS BACK LIKE WE DID THE FIRE SUPPRESSION, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU CAN'T HEAT THE BUILDING, THAT WAS OUR WHOLE PROBLEM.
AND BUT I DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING SPECIFICALLY.
I DIDN'T HEAR OF ANY FREEZE DAMAGE ON THOSE GEOTHERMALS.
RANDY, YOU REFERENCED DAMAGE AT SHILOH WERE ANY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS DAMAGED.
I HONESTLY, I WAS OVER THERE RIGHT AFTER THAT HAPPENED, IT WAS ONE SPRINKLER HEAD, BUT IT WENT FOR A WHILE BEFORE WE NOTICED IT WAS ON THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING.
IT DIDN'T GET BACK TO THE STORE ROOM IN THE BACK.
AND SO I'M NOT SURE WHERE THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, UNFORTUNATELY, AS I WALKED THROUGH THERE I SAW A LOT OF PAPERS AND BOXES BEING STORED ON THE FLOOR, AND THAT WORKS GREAT UNTIL YOU HAVE A FLOOD.
AND SO, HONESTLY, I'M NOT SURE WHAT WAS IN THOSE BOXES, BUT I DIDN'T SEE A SIGNIFICANT BULK OF, LIKE, INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS THAT WERE WET.
IS THAT WHERE WE RETAIN RECORDS.
MOST OF OUR RECORDS ARE ON LASERFICHE.
OK? SO SO THEY'RE STORED ELECTRONICALLY.
ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU. WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY EARLY RECEIVED STAAR TEST OR ANYTHING THAT GOT DAMAGED IN THAT, DID WE? I'M JUST CURIOUS. NO.
I KNOW SOMEONE MIGHT WANT TO KNOW NO OKAY.
RANDY IF YOU THINK WE GET THAT SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT BACK, THAT SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND, YOU THINK THAT'S GOING TO RESULT IN A LOSS IN STATE ED SEEMS ANY TIME WE REALIZE ANY GAINS.
I WOULD HOPE NOT ON A FEMA REIMBURSEMENT BUT.
AND I DON'T KNOW, WERE PUZZLED ON IT.
ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS? ANY FURTHER SLIDES? THAT'S IT THANK YOU. THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT, WE'RE MOVING ON NOW TO AGENDA ITEM 10 D IN REPORTS WE WILL NOW HEAR FROM SUPERINTENDENT BONSER REGARDING ADVOCACY EFFORTS FOR THE EIGHTY SEVENTH TEXAS LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
THANK YOU, PRESIDENT RICHARDS.
IT'S MY PLEASURE TO GIVE A BRIEF ADVOCACY UPDATE.
AND I KNOW THE TEAM PROBABLY HAS SOME THINGS TO BRING TO THE TABLE FOR ADVOCACY AS WELL.
SO STICKING WITH THE WEATHER THEME, WE WERE TO HAVE TWO LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES IN THE WEEK OF THE WINTER STORM AND SO PLANO LEGISLATIVE DAYS WAS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY TWENTY THIRD AND TWENTY FOURTH, AND THAT WAS POSTPONED AND IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED.
AND SO AS SOON AS WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION, WE'LL SHARE THAT AGAIN WITH THE PUBLIC AND
[01:35:05]
WITH THE BOARD. AND THEN THE TEXAS SCHOOL COALITION WAS ALSO SLATED TO HAVE ITS LEGISLATIVE MEMBERSHIP MEETING THAT DAY DURING THAT WEEK.AND THEY ALSO POSTPONED AND THAT IS SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW.
SO THAT MEMBERSHIP MEETING SHOULD ALREADY BE ON THE BOARD'S CALENDAR.
AND SO WE'VE HAD A LITTLE DELAY IN SOME OF THE THE VIRTUAL MEETINGS.
I THINK WHAT YOU'LL HEAR MOST EVERYBODY SAY ABOUT THE SESSION RIGHT NOW IS IT'S VERY WEIRD THOUGH YOU HEAR WORDS LIKE IT'S SO STRANGE AND IT'S VERY, VERY QUIET.
CHRISTY ROME AT THE TEXAS SCHOOL COALITION EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING SAID SHE WAS ACTUALLY AT THE CAPITOL LAST WEEK.
AND SHE DID TESTIFY IN PERSON, BUT SHE SAID SHE WAS ONE OF ALMOST NOBODY INSIDE THE CAPITOL. AND SO THERE'S JUST VERY LITTLE GOING ON INSIDE THE CAPITOL.
AND SO SHE DID GIVE WRITTEN TESTIMONY ON BEHALF OF THE COALITION TO THE SENATE, AND SHE APPEARED AT THE HOUSE FOR TESTIMONY.
AND SO WHERE ARE WE ON HOLD, HARMLESS, STILL WAITING? THERE'S NO UPDATE ON THAT OTHER THAN WE HAVE HEARD THE COMMISSIONER SAY PUBLICLY.
I THINK WE HEARD HIM SAY THIS AT THE RICHARDSON CHAMBER LEGISLATIVE DAYS THIS PAST WEEK, WHICH WAS NOT ONE OF THE POSTPONED ITEMS OR LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES.
AND THE COMMISSIONER SAID HE FEELS LIKE SOME HOLD HARMLESS IS COMING, BUT VERY VAGUE.
SO NO LOCKDOWN ON YES OR NO? THERE SEEMS TO BE STILL CONVERSATION ABOUT IF WE ARE GIVEN THE MONEY AS A SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE'LL QUIT LOOKING FOR KIDS.
THAT THERE'S NO CARROT AND THE STICK TO PROMPT US TO CONTINUE TO FIND KIDS TO BRING THEM BACK, SO I WOULD BEG TO DIFFER.
I THINK I TALKED ABOUT THAT AT THE LAST MEETING, THAT WE CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO FIND EVERY STUDENT AND BRING THEM BACK AND HAVE HAD A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS IN DOING SO AND HAVE PUT A LOT OF EFFORT, RESOURCES, TIME, ENERGY INTO FINDING KIDS AND BRINGING THEM BACK OR ENSURING THAT THEY'RE IN SCHOOL ELSEWHERE, YOU KNOW, VERIFYING THAT THEY'RE RECEIVING AN EDUCATION. SO WE WILL CONTINUE TO PRESS ON HOLD HARMLESS.
AND WE DID GO AHEAD THE COMMISSIONER MADE A STATEMENT THAT HE IS THE PERSON WHO MAKES THE DECISION, BUT HE HAS NOT MADE THE DECISION.
SO WE WENT AHEAD AND SENT OUR LETTER WITH ALL THE EVIDENCE OF OUR ACTIVITIES IN FINDING KIDS DIRECTLY TO THE COMMISSIONER, SAYING IF IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THE DECISION, HERE'S OUR EVIDENCE OF DUE DILIGENCE ON FINDING KIDS.
SO. AND THEN I WANT TO TURN IT OVER TO THE BOARD FOR THE ACTIVITIES, I KNOW YOU ALL WERE
[10.D. Advocacy Efforts for the 87th Texas Legislative Session]
A PART OF THE RICHARDSON DAY AS WELL AND GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT ANY ADVOCACY EFFORTS ON YOUR PART AS A BOARD.WELL, I DID ATTEND MOST OF THOSE RICHARDSON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, AUSTIN FLY IN IS WHAT THEY CALLED IT, FEBRUARY 24TH THROUGH THE TWENTY SIXTH.
AND WE HEARD FROM SENATOR ANGELA PAXTON AND MIKE MORATH, COMMISSIONER STATE REPRESENTATIVE JEFF LEACH. THERE WAS A SESSION WITH THE STATE COMPTROLLER, GLENN HEGAR AND STATE REPRESENTATIVE ANGIE CHEN BUTTON.
AND I THINK THAT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING THAT WE DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW.
AND AS YOU SAID, THE SESSION IS KIND OF SLOW THIS YEAR.
BUT ONE THING, ONE OF THE TAKEAWAYS I HAD WAS WITH REPRESENTATIVE ANGIE CHEN BUTTON, AND SHE MENTIONED THAT SHE DOES NOT SUPPORT THE BILL THAT WOULD PRECLUDE WHAT WHAT IS CALLED TAXPAYER FUNDED LOBBYING.
AND SO I WAS PLEASED TO HEAR THAT SHE OPPOSED IT IN THE LAST SESSION AND SHE WILL OPPOSE IT IN THIS SESSION. SO I PLAN TO ACTUALLY REACH OUT TO HER AND TELL HER THANK YOU FOR THAT. ANY OTHER COMMENTS.
I HAVE ALSO ATTENDED THE RICHARDSON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LEGISLATIVE DAYS AND REGARDING THIS STORM IS SOMETHING, YOU KNOW, THE TAKE AWAY FROM COMPTROLLER HEGAR IS IT PROBABLY WILL NOT AFFECT OUR BOTTOM LINE MUCH.
HE'S GOING TO GIVE ANOTHER ESTIMATE END OF MARCH, BEGINNING OF APRIL.
THE YOU KNOW, THE WHOLE WEEK DURING THE STORM AND NOBODY WENT OUT AND SHOPPING.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGES, AND YOU KNOW YOU SPENT, HOW MUCH MONEY ON YOUR REPAIR?
[01:40:03]
I PERSONALLY SPENT OVER 2000 TO REPAIR OUR HOME.SO IRONICALLY, YOU MAY NOT HAVE ANY LOSS OF REVENUE BECAUSE OF THAT.
SO THE ESTIMATE MAY NOT HAVE THAT MUCH CHANGE.
YOU KNOW, FROM THE LAST ESTIMATE.
SO BUT END OF MARCH AND BEGINNING OF APRIL, WE WE'LL HEAR AGAIN FROM HIM.
THAT'S WHAT I THERE'S ANOTHER ITEM I'D LIKE TO DISCUSS, AND THE LEGISLATIVE SUBCOMMITTEE HAS PUT TOGETHER A LETTER THAT'S IN FRONT OF YOU, AND I WAS HOPING THAT THE BOARD COULD TAKE A PEEK AT THAT. WE'D LIKE TO SEND THIS LETTER TO GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT BECAUSE WE'RE REALLY WANTING HIM TO PRIORITIZE THE ACCESS TO A CORONAVIRUS VACCINE.
THERE ARE 363,000 TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS, AND WE'RE HOPING THAT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE ONE B ELIGIBILITY GROUP.
THEY ARE FRONT LINE WORKERS AND THEY SERVE THE 5.5 MILLION STUDENTS IN K THROUGH 12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS. AND THE TEXAS TEACHERS NEED YOUR HELP.
AND I NOTED TODAY WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THE TEA WEBSITE THAT TEA EVEN SAYS, QUOTE, TEACHERS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT IN SCHOOL FACTOR AFFECTING STUDENT OUTCOMES.
SO TO ME, I THINK THEY ARE FRONTLINE WORKERS AND WE NEED TO GET THEM VACCINATED SO THAT THEY CAN SAFELY RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM AND ALL OF OUR CHILDREN CAN SAFELY RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM AS WELL.
AND JUST IN THE DISCUSSIONS LAST WEEK, I DID HEAR THAT COMMISSIONER MORATH NOT BE VERY FAVORABLE FOR GETTING TEACHERS.
HE DID NOT SEEM [INAUDIBLE] OPTIMISM ON THIS FOR TEACHERS BEING ABLE TO GET THE SHOTS.
BUT I'M REALLY GLAD TO SEE THIS LETTER.
I ALSO THINK THERE'S ALSO AN ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE FOR TEACHERS GETTING THE SHOT AS WELL.
WE MAY WANT TO MENTION THAT AS WELL.
YEAH. SO I'M HOPING THAT WE CAN GET THIS SENT IF WE CAN GET ALL SEVEN BOARD MEMBERS AND OUR SUPERINTENDENT TO SIGN THIS.
SO LET'S TALK ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW HERE AT THE BOARD TABLE.
AND DAVID, I SEE YOUR MICROPHONE IS GREEN.
[LAUGHTER] YEAH, THE ONLY THING I WAS GOING TO SAY IS I ACTUALLY READ AN ARTICLE THIS AFTERNOON THAT, THAT 28 IS NOW 33.
SO THERE ARE THREE OTHER STATES THAT HAVE PRIORITIZED TEACHERS FOR THE VACCINE.
AND THE SECOND THING I WAS GOING TO SAY IS THAT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT EITHER ABBOTT SAID TODAY OR THAT CAME OUT OF TODAY'S NEWS WAS THAT 1 C THE NEXT GROUP IS ABOUT TO BE AUTHORIZED, BUT THEY HAVEN'T DEFINED ONE C YET.
THEY DON'T HAVE IT OR THERE IS NO PUBLIC DEFINITION.
AND SO IF THAT IS STILL IN THE WORKS TO GET TEACHERS INCLUDED IN THE 1 C YOU KNOW, THAT WOULD ALSO BE HELPFUL. I DON'T KNOW WE NEED TO REVISE THE LETTER BECAUSE THE MESSAGE IS THE SAME. BUT THE FACT THAT THERE ARE MORE STATES DOING THIS, I THINK I'M HOPING THAT GOVERNOR ABBOTT WOULD INCLUDE TEACHERS.
YEAH. SO I'LL AMEND THE LETTER TO INCLUDE THOSE OTHER STATES.
AND MAYBE IF YOU CAN TELL ME THE ARTICLE, DO YOU KNOW.
SO, BOARD MEMBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT PUTTING YOUR SIGNATURE ON A LETTER LIKE THIS? I THINK WE WE NEED TO SUPPORT THE TEACHERS, AND I FEEL COMFORTABLE SIGNING A LETTER LIKE THIS. BECAUSE IF THERE'S ANY OTHER LIKE C1 AND PERSONALLY, I ALWAYS WANT TO PUT MYSELF THERE AND TO COMPARE, I FEEL MY JOB IS LESS OF A PRIORITY COMPARED TO WHAT THE TEACHERS DO. SO I WOULD BE WILLING TO STAND BEHIND THE TEACHERS IN TERMS OF GETTING THEM THE VACCINE. I THINK THERE ARE MANY OTHER JOBS PROBABLY IN THE SAME WAY.
I MEAN, OUR TEACHER IS FACING THE MOST PRECIOUS THINGS WE HAVE ARE OUR CHILDREN.
THANK YOU. SARA CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, BUT FOR NEXT YEAR, FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR, WE DON'T HAVE ANY PLAN OF LEARNING THE WAY THAT WE'RE DOING IT THIS YEAR.
THE WAIVER FOR ASYNCHRONOUS WITH THE ASYNCHRONOUS PLAN AND THE WAIVER FOR HYBRID EXPIRES AT THE END OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
SO THE PLANS THAT ARE IN PLACE ARE IN PLACE FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
AND SO NEXT YEAR WE WOULD ANTICIPATE GOING BACK TO NORMAL OPERATIONS.
WE DO THINK AND THE COMMISSIONER HAS SAID THAT, YOU KNOW, DEPENDING ON THE ROLL OUT OF THE VACCINE AN THE STATUS OF THE VIRUS, THERE MAY BE SOME SOME VERSION OF VIRTUAL LEARNING. IT WILL NOT I CAN PRETTY MUCH SAY WITH CONFIDENCE THAT WE DON'T INTEND FOR IT
[01:45:05]
TO BE THE WAY THAT IT NECESSARILY LOOKS THIS YEAR AT ALL.LIKE I SAID, NORMAL OPERATIONS FOR A SMALL POPULATION, PERHAPS VIRTUAL LEARNING HAS BEEN.
IT'S LIKE A CHOICE, LIKE ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL OR I.B.
OR HUFFMAN PYP THAT THIS IS A LEARNING SETTING FOR A SMALL POPULATION OF KIDS, BUT FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF KIDS, THEY NEED TO BE IN CLASSROOMS WITH TEACHERS LEARNING FACE TO FACE. BUT WE NEED TEACHERS TO BE VACCINATED.
IF TEACHERS WANT VACCINES, THEY NEED TO HAVE VACCINES.
AND WE NEED TO DO THAT AND SUPPORT THAT FOR TEACHERS SO THAT IF THAT'S SOMETHING THEY WANT FOR THEIR PERSONAL SAFETY THAT WE DO PRIORITIZE THEM IN THAT WAY BECAUSE THIS IS THEIR WORKPLACE AND WE'RE EXPECTING THEM TO BE THERE WITH KIDS, AND SO WE NEED TO DO OUR PART TO PROTECT. SO I HOPE THAT ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.
WELL, IT DOES, AND IT MAKES ME THINK ABOUT EARLY ON IN THIS PROCESS WHEN WE WERE DISCUSSING PRIORITIZING WHICH TEACHERS WOULD BE ON CAMPUS, AND WHICH TEACHERS WOULD HAVE PRIORITY TO DO THE TEACHING ONLINE AND TEACHING FROM HOME, SOMETIMES NOT EVEN ON CAMPUS.
I KNOW A LOT OF THE TEACHING ONLINE IS STILL HAPPENING FROM THE CAMPUS, BUT WE ALSO HAVE THAT, YOU KNOW, SO BASED ON MEDICAL REASONS, AGE.
AND SO IF WE SEE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET MAYBE SOME MORE EXPERIENCED TEACHERS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, NOT DOING THE FACE TO FACE, MAYBE BECAUSE OF MEDICAL OR, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER IT MAY BE, IF IT MEANS GETTING THE TEACHERS VACCINATED QUICKER SO WE CAN GET KIDS BACK IN SCHOOL QUICKER AND HELP FORMULATE THOSE PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR AND MAKE SURE WE'RE DOING THOSE FIVE DAYS A WEEK THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE REALLY WANTING TO GET BACK, THAT WE'VE GOT TO ALSO PUT OUR BEST FOOT FORWARD FOR OUR TEACHERS.
SO THEY'RE NOT FOCUSED ON THEIR HEALTH.
THEY'RE FOCUSED ON THE TEACHING.
AND ALSO GETTING SOME OF OUR MORE EXPERIENCED TEACHERS THAT MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT OLDER, MIGHT HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION GETTING THEM COMFORTABLE AND BACK INTO THE IN-PERSON SETTING IN FRONT OF STUDENTS.
SO IF THAT'S WHAT YOU KNOW, I THINK FOLLOWING THIS VACCINATION AND PRESSING IT FORWARD AND MAKING OUR TEACHERS A PRIORITY IS GOING TO GET MORE STUDENTS FACE TO FACE IN FRONT OF THOSE TEACHERS, THEN I ABSOLUTELY SUPPORT IT AND I'LL ABSOLUTELY SIGN IT.
THANK YOU. AND JUST ON THE VACCINATION FRONT, WE HAVE SUBMITTED OUR APPLICATION TO BE A VACCINATION PROVIDER FOR THE THIRD TIME AND WITH THE HELP OF THE CITY, THIS TIME WITH OUR REFRIGERATION. AND SO WE'RE VERY THANKFUL FOR THEIR HELP ON THE MONITORING DEVICE.
AND THEY ACTUALLY PROVIDED A LOAN FOR US TO HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT THAT WE THINK THEN CROSS OUR FINGERS. PERHAPS WE'LL BE ABLE TO DELIVER OUR OWN VACCINES.
AND WE'RE AWAITING CONFIRMATION OF THAT.
AND THEN ALSO THE PARTNERSHIP WE HAVE WITH A LOCAL PROVIDER OF VACCINES WORKING OFF OUR ONE B LIST. BUT WE HAVE TO STICK WITH THE SAME PRIORITY ORDER.
AND SO WE YOU KNOW, WE HAVE PROVIDED THAT LIST TO THE HEALTH CARE PROVIDER AND THEY ARE WORKING THAT LIST WHERE THEY HAVE VACANT APPOINTMENTS JUST TO GET ANY TEACHERS POSSIBLE THROUGH TO GET AS MANY SHOTS IN ARMS OF STAFF WHO WANT IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
SO JUST SO I CAN BE CLEAR, SO WE ACTUALLY HAVE A PROVIDER THAT WE'RE WORKING WITH THAT IF GREG ABBOTT WERE TO COME OUT AND SAY TEACHERS ARE IN GROUP ONE C AND ONE C IS AUTHORIZED, WE COULD LINE THEM UP. WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE.
AND WE COULD KNOCK IT OUT IN A MONTH.
WE'VE GOT QUITE A LINE UP OF ONE B.
YEAH, WE HAVE A SIGNIFICANT LINE UP OF ONE B.
UNDER THE CURRENT STANDARD. UNDER THE CURRENT STANDARD.
AND HOW MANY OF THOSE HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED AT LEAST A DOSE.
FOR THEM TO SHARE BACK WITH US.
SURE. BUT WE'RE GOING TO SEE IF WE CAN GET A BALLPARK INFORMATION.
WHEN WE BECAUSE WE WANTED TO BECOME A VACCINATION PROVIDER OURSELVES WE DID WHEN WE ASKED STAFF, ARE YOU ONE A, ONE B OR ANYBODY ELSE LIKE WHO WORKS FOR US, WHO WANTS IT, WHO WOULD FALL INTO THE AFTER ONE B GROUP? SO WE HAVE THAT.
WE HAVE ALL THAT SO WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE.
AND IF WE CAN, YOU KNOW, EITHER WE BECOME A VACCINATION PROVIDER OURSELVES OR IF STAFF THEN ARE MOVED INTO A GROUP OF, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE AN EDUCATOR, YOU CAN GO, WE'RE READY AND WE ARE READY. JUST CURIOUS, DO WE HAVE STAFF THAT'S RESISTANT TO GETTING THE VACCINE OR HAS IT BEEN A VERY VOCAL I MEAN I'VE HEARD THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO DON'T WANT THE VACCINE WHAT ARE OUR STAFF FEEL.
WE DID REQUIRE EVERY STAFF MEMBER TO RESPOND AND COMPLETE THE FORM.
IT WAS REALLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, AND IT'S QUITE A LONG LIST.
[01:50:05]
SO I'M HOPING THAT WE DO GET APPROVED TO BE A PROVIDER BECAUSE WE'VE GOT A PLAN.HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO WAIT TO KNOW WHETHER WE ARE APPROVED OR NOT.
WE DON'T KNOW. WE'VE THE FIRST TIME WE GOT REJECTED IN A WEEK.
THE SECOND TIME IT TOOK TWO WEEKS.
NOW WE'RE GOING ON TWO WEEKS AGAIN.
SO I WILL SAY, BETH, I'VE HAD A LOT OF FEEDBACK FROM TEACHERS WHO ARE VERY THANKFUL THAT IT'S EVEN SOMETHING THE DISTRICT IS TRYING TO GET FOR THEM.
SO IT'S BEEN A VERY POSITIVE RECEIVED, EVEN IF IT'S NOT IF THEY HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANYTHING YET. WELL, THEY CAN GET THEIR NAME ON THE LIST AND HOW TO DO THAT THROUGH MULTIPLE DIFFERENT AVENUES WITH THE CAUTIONARY NOTE OF DON'T TAKE YOUR NAME OFF OF ANY LIST UNTIL YOU GET A SHOT IN YOUR ARM. SO IF WE GET APPROVED AS A DISTRIBUTOR, WOULD WE FOCUS SOLELY ON PISD EMPLOYEES OR WOULD IT ALSO INCLUDE SAY A LOCALLY ELECTED SCHOOL BOARD OFFICIALS AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS? WE CANNOT DO THE FAMILIES OF STAFF, I WILL TELL YOU, AND WE CANNOT DO STUDENTS.
SO IT'S JUST YOU'RE JUST TALKING ABOUT SERVICING FOR EMPLOYEES.
THERE'S AN OPTION, I'LL SHARE CERTAINLY THE MEGA SITE DOWN AT DALLAS FAIR PARK, THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A PLAN WHERE IF YOU VOLUNTEER FOR 15 HOURS, YOU CAN MOST LIKELY GET A SHOT.
AND SO YOU CAN GO ON VOLY.ORG AND FIND THE SIGN UPS FOR THAT.
ANECDOTALLY, I HAVE HEARD THAT IT'S AFTER MAYBE FOUR OR FIVE HOURS OF VOLUNTEERING, THAT THEY'LL GIVE YOU A DOSE.
I THINK THOSE ARE MAYBE HOPEFUL RUMORS, BUT NOT FROM MY MORE RECENT ENGAGEMENT WITH THE LIONS CLUB, WHO ACTUALLY RUNS THE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT.
OH, I GOT YOU. WELL, I AM HEALTHY ENOUGH, I GUESS I'M HOPEFULLY WAITING AND LETTING PEOPLE WHO NEED IT GET IT. WELL, THEY HAVE A NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS, PARTICULARLY IF YOU'RE AN EARLY BIRD, 7:15 ON MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY ARE GOOD SLOTS TO GO.
BUT ANYWAY, THAT'S ANOTHER OPTION.
YOU GIVE A LITTLE SERVICE TO YOUR COMMUNITY.
I DON'T HEAR ANY BOARD MEMBERS VOICING OPPOSITION TO SIGNING.
IS THAT CORRECT? OK, SO I GUESS SHARON CAN PROVIDE THE LETTER AND THEN WORK WITH US TO GET SIGNATURES. ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU.
